No, both Brown and Yellow are too different from Red and this patch is not compatible.
|
Aw that's a shame! Do you plan on doing a Yellow version? If not, could you explain how to do it? I'd love to have a go at trying it. Yellow is my favourite game and to do that would be amazing.
|
No, I have no plans to redo this for Yellow.
You can see the change log of this hack here: https://github.com/dannye/pokered-gen-II/compare/pokered...master Unfortunately, there is no disassembly of Yellow like the one I used of Red. So remaking the graphics patch in Yellow would be much more time consuming. |

Well, I finally did it! The code for the exp bar is here: https://github.com/dannye/pokered-gen-II/commit/a59779093d5de28274ed261a8f04130735eb1cf2 |
Nice job Danny! That is awesome ^^
|
Danny-E 33 what a amazing hack of this version it replace old palletes into new one and also the graphics, music and SFX from Pokemon GSC versions....BTW I suggest can you added the color ALA "GBC" of this hack it will be colorful and even more nostalgic and enjoyable I assure that matee...
|
Hey Danny, Congratulations on the exp bar hack! Will you be implementing this into the patch soon? I've tried to import the code myself, but I'm afraid it's a bit beyond my technical expertise.

Thanks for the update! I can't wait to try it out.
|
Well, I just uploaded version 1.4! As promised, this includes a fix to the SGB border and the fully functional experience bar!
|
I just want to say thanks for putting so much work into this! Replaying Pokemon Red in Gen 2 graphics has been a dream of mine for ages.
Just wondering, would this patch work for a Pokemon Blue game as well, or just Red? (Like I know a Fire Red patch wouldn't work on Leaf Green, but generation 1 is a lot different from generation 3, and since the games are close to identical aside from wild Pokemon, I thought I'd ask.) Sorry if that's kind of a dumb question. Either way, great work! Are you planning to maybe implement a slight bit more gsc music in the future, like for instance, Route 3? |
Great work with EXP bar. But it still colour less outside the battle. You think about colorize that rom also outside the battle?
|

Yes, this patch works on blue. The only side affect is that it makes 'Blue Version' on the title screen appear red. Yes I plan to add the rest of the GSC Kanto music. Quote:

Just uploaded V1.5 which fixes a bug pointed out by 80C which screws up the exp bar if you used Transform.
Sorry to those 35 people who downloaded V1.4 in the short time that it was up. |
You say that Drenn made this into a cgb game, but the music patch isn't part of it. The music part is the best part. Could you talk to Drenn and ask him to implement the music patch into it?
|
ask drenn if he could implement your latest gfx and sfx patch(v5) into his full color hack.

My source code for the Full GBC hack is here. His hack's thread now has been updated with the Full GBC hack that has all the features all the way up to V1.5 of the Graphics patch. Although, one cool difference is that the experience bar is now blue since the GBC game can handle more palettes. Pokemon Red Full Color Hack Thread |
Question
Will there be a blue version? (I assume not much extra work would have to be done but what do I know.) |
Yes, there is a Blue version if you really want it. I figured there wouldn't be a much of a demand. Blue can be built from the source code:
https://github.com/dannye/pokered-gen-II Or I can supply you with an. ips for Blue if you'd like. (Although, the full GBC version already has a Blue version posted) |
IPS please.
I posted this earlier but it didn't appear. |
I just uploaded Version 2.0!
The Graphics patch is pretty much the same but the GFX&Music patch now uses the entire Crystal music engine and all Crystal music for Kanto! I also added a download for Blue Version. Check out the download in the first post and leave your feedback! |
I just want to let everyone know that this will likely be the final version (unless some awful bug is discovered), so I won't have anything more to post in this thread. I will always still be around on the forums, however. So don't be afraid to bump if you have a question. I will get back to you. Thanks for you time, and enjoy the game!
|
I've been using this rom hack as a base rom on randomizers and it is awesome. Fully compatible with a randomizer and makes playing through Kanto with a randomizer much more aesthetically enjoyable. I will probably use this as a replacement for every time I return to an original Gen 1 game that isn't a ROM hack now since it's entirely the same game. Thanks for making Red look better.
My first randomizer of this game included changing the starting Pokémon to Electabuzz, Dugtrio, and Lapras. It's going very well so far! |
Cool, I'm glad you like it!
Yeah I did my best to keep all the code and data that I didn't edit at the same address in the rom. This way, the hack stays compatible with most tools. The graphics-only version of this hack should be really safe to use with tools. The music hack version is probably less stable with tools because the whole original music engine was ripped out and a new one was put in its place, so the addresses of a lot more things have probably been shifted. |
Make it finnaly in full colours.

I must confess I am an idiot (and have windows 7) because I don't know how to recompile from a source code...
|
If you're just looking to play the hacks, no need to compile the source code yourself. Downloads are in the first post.
If you're making changes to the source code and want to compile, this can be a lot of help: INSTALL.md If you still have questions, join our irc and ask us. |
Well I wanted to try the fully colored version.. for which you provided a link to the source code...
|
Right. And I also linked to the hack's thread, where you can find the download link.
|
Is there not a full color version with the crystal sound banks and sound effects?
|
Correct. Drenn's full color hack is the full color equivalent of V1.5 of this hack (no crystal audio engine). I may try to catch the full color hack up to V2.0 in the next couple weeks.
|
Oh okay so will that version have the crystal sounds and such?
|
Yes. I will give it a shot. But honestly, I can't promise it will even be successful. The full color hack is very... unstable. It's easy to break it and introduce game crashing bugs, because so much of the original engine has been scrapped and remade from scratch to allow full gbc functionality. Ripping out even more of the engine and stitching in the crystal audio engine might be a lot harder than it was for plain Pokemon Red.

Amazing hack.
Is there anything like this for Pokémon Yellow, or perhaps a Pokémon Yellow remade in G/S/C? |
No and no. I was able to make this because of the powerful disassembly of Pokemon Red. (https://github.com/iimarckus/pokered)
I will not be able to make a Yellow hack that is similar to this one until a disassembly of Yellow is finished. (But we are working on it) |
for some reason, there is no color when I apply it to either a Red or Blue rom.
|
Hi, Packer!
This is almost certainly due to the emulator you are using. The original Pokemon Red game is a Super Gameboy Game. Many emulators work perfectly for original Gameboy Games and for Gameboy Color Games, but fail to emulate the extra features of a Super Gameboy Game. If you are using a mobile emulator, you are out of luck. I am not aware of any mobile emulator that handles the SGB features. If you are using VBA, you can go to Options->Gameboy->SGB to play my hack in full color. If you are not using VBA, you can either download VBA or I actually recommend downloading BGB instead. It is a powerful emulator with accurate SGB emulation. Good luck! Let me know if you have any more questions. Also, just yesterday I updated the first post with all new image links, since the old ones were starting to die. There are no big announcements for this hack because it is finished and I am not working on it anymore, but I am still around the forums and I definitely want new members to be able to come across this hack, because I think any fan of Gen I will really enjoy this! ~Danny-E 33 |
This is insain. Great job man!

Now you can enjoy Gen II graphics on mobile emulators that only support GBC mode and not SGB mode. Download the Yellow hack here: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=372328 |
Hello, I would like to advise something I have noticed in your hack.
When I was playing the GFX+Music patch in Red and Blue version, I tried to trade after beat Brock, but after the trade was completed and reseted, the both files are erased by corruption, that happens with me more than twice times. The Graphic Patch without music changes is working good. No problems with trades. I have patched both ips in clean roms for each version and played on My OldBoy! emulator for Android devices. I hope that information help you to perfect your patches. Sorry for any mistake with my English, is not my native language. |
Hm, yes, I have confirmed this is a bug. I will put a warning in the first post until I get this bug fixed. Thanks!
|
I am glad to help, I am currently playing your hacks for fun, I will for sure beat the Graphics Patch and after you fix the GFX+Music Patch I will beat them too (Beat for me is defeat the Indigo Plateau and complete the Pokédex to get the Diploma)
I will for sure report any other bug which I find. |
I just found a bug with the graphics ips patches for red and blue the exp bar is changing color with the hp bar instead of being blue
|
thank you for clarifying this for me i thought it was bugged because in the yellow graphics mod he made i noticed he updated patch 1.1 with a blue exp bar where before it was like this
|
Thanks for stepping in, Mateo, so I didn't have to type all that up (again)
Raizako, actually in V1.1 of the Yellow patch, the exp bar is only blue while playing is GBC mode. If playing the same rom in SGB mode, the exp bar will share the color of the health bar like before (exactly how Gold and Silver work in GBC vs SGB mode, as Mateo stated) |
Okay, I have a question.
First off, this is one heck of an awesome edit to Pokemon Red. It definitely makes it a lot more fun to play! Great work to you and everyone else involved :) Now, onto my question. So I'm quite familiar with how certain ROM hacking works but since you have the Crystal sound engine integrated into Pokemon Red, say I don't like one of the tracks (mainly the Kanto trainer battle theme). How could I go about replacing it? It seems that the pointers are also different and I've scoured a bunch of these threads all night and haven't found the answers I'm looking for. So say I want to replace the trainer battle theme with the rival theme, or maybe the Suicune theme, how exactly would I start about doing this? |
Hello!
Thanks for your compliment and your interest in my hack. To modify this hack, you should not hex edit the rom. Instead, clone (download a copy of) the source code: https://github.com/dannye/pokered-gen-II Then modify the source code and assemble the rom using our Gameboy assembler: https://github.com/rednex/rgbds The great advantage of using our source code instead of hex editing is that you don't have to worry at all about free space and pointer values. The assembler arranges code and data to manage free space, and it calculates and resolves pointers for you. This way, you can just focus your time on modding the game instead of wasting time on "clean up" and "busy work". In your case, if you want to replace songs, just take song files from here: https://github.com/froggestspirit/CrystalComplete/tree/master/audio/music and put them into this folder: https://github.com/dannye/pokered-gen-II/tree/music/crysaudio/music Then you have to modify how songs are used in game by editing things like constants/music_constants.asm, crysaudio/red_pointers.asm, and data/map_songs.asm etc. |
Can you make Pokemon Green in color with gen ii graphics? Or can someone please tell me how can i do it by myself? I really want to have all 4 versions in color with gen ii graphics :) Please someone answer and thanks for this wonderful hack n.n
|
Here's something that I think is a tad bizarre. When I add my own custom sprites, add, not replace, it will compile fine when I do a "make red" command, but it'll delete the PNG files of those custom sprites afterwards using an RM command. I have them backed up where I can just paste them back in but that's getting irritating to do. For now, I just notice it doing it for trainer battle sprites, but that's the only thing I've dabbled in so far is adding a few new trainers. Everything else works just fine and the new battles are neat, but just having to replace those PNGs after each make clean and make red is starting to drive me a bit batty. :)
|
any chance of getting an ips for the exp bar and the captured icon similar to how the color version of this mod has a vanilla option with the added improvements?
|
Quote:
|
Also if we could get an ips that only changes the back sprites that would be cool too :) I enjoy the nostalgia from the old front sprites but the back always bothered me and your back sprites are the best!
|
I've been playing this and I'm loving it, I just wanted to ask if there was any chance there was an EXP All that followed Gen 6 rules? I love the vanilla game, I wouldn't change anything besides the graphics, and I'm loving these, but the grinding part gets me a little... You know, as an adult... Ain't nobody got time for that hahah I don't know if like an implemented game's mechanic or if a modification of the exp all item... I'd rather get it somewhat early in the game, but that's fine too. Anyway, thanks for the hack!
|
This is some incredible work. Thanks for making this. The only downside of this for me, is it is incompatible with the Gender Select mod/hack. If that could be somehow integrated into this then it would be without a shadow of a doubt the definitive versions of Red and Blue.
