Medals/Achievements Returning?

So Black2 and White2 brought us the medal system, which is basically a cumbersome achievement system for the games.

Would you like to see them return in X and Y? Did you have any gripes with the medals that you hope are fixed with this installment? Do you want an easier, more traditional achievement system instead? Discuss!

Honestly, I just want some sort of item that tracks achievements I've earned as I earn them. A little popup textbox and a sound effect is enough for me. I didn't like that I couldn't count the number of medals I had easily, and there wasn't really any "nerd pride" for getting a large number of them because they were pretty forgettable. I also didn't like being medal bombed by not visiting the NPC for a while. I also want more obscure achievements or optional achievements that aren't obvious.

What do y'all think?

I haven't actually played BW2, but just from what I've seen the medal system doesn't sound all that great. I think something more simplified like you suggested would be better, something maybe with a greater effect than just being able to showoff.

I didn't go all out to fill the Medal Case but it was a nice little feature so I'd like to see something similar in X & Y.

I loved medals in B2W2. I hope they return in XY but with a bit of tweaking on how they are received. I don't want those standard "beat the __th Gym Leader" achievements, though. You have to do that, and you're already rewarded for it, so I'm glad those were excluded from B2W2 and I hope they stay excluded.

jsa0603 January 12th, 2013 12:17 PM

I honestly didn't really care about the medal/achievements. I would always be doing my own thing, and whenever I got a medal, i'd be like "cool... whatever...".

Achievements seem to mean more when you're allowed to show them off to other people. Unless Pokemon introduced some Co-op multiplayer system in X and Y, I could care less about the medal/achievement system in place =/

So if achievements/medals were tracked and displayed whenever you're battling/trading online, or perhaps on global and regional leaderboards, you'd care more?

I know I certainly would! I'm traditionally an achievement hunter on games that offer them, but the Pokemon medals just didn't catch me. I only appeared to be caught.

What I don't want is to approach someone who awards those medals. Talking to that guy and having him award medal after medal after medal (especially bad when you qualify for 20 medals) is really, really time-consuming. Maybe a better idea would be to gather hint medals as you go along, and then the game gives you a popup of the medals you should now qualify for, and then award them later.

Filling up the medal case is awesome though.

I also hope the medals aren't given out one by one again. In my White 2, I didn't get any of the medals until after I had finished the game, and well I had to sit through getting like 150 of them. But I would still like to see an achievement system again. They add another thing to do.

An metal system that has a achievement system would be pretty of nice for Street Pass and Spot Pass show-off purposes~ I mean, it looks like Nintendo nowadays wants to have people show off their latest achievements to viewers all over the world; it can make for interesting rival-esque competition!

In game, I hope that they'll create more difficult metals to acquire~ For making collecting them all the more rewarding.

Nick January 12th, 2013 4:20 PM

I found it to be incredibly patronizing and would prefer it not be included in these games.

Sydian January 12th, 2013 4:37 PM

I'm fine without an achievement system. It's a 3DS game, not a 360 game lol. It was nice that medals recognized monotypes and solos for the E4 though, and that's pretty nice for challengers. If the medal system or anything similar were to return, I just hope it's not as obnoxious. Cause if you don't talk to the medal guy and you accidentally talk to him when you're like...halfway through the game, you're sitting there for quite a while. Instead of giving each medal individually, just say "Allison received 36 new medals!" and you can check your medal case on your own time.

I enjoyed the pkmn center serving several purposes and your favorite medal you earned being shareable although, there is one thing...
I wish that they would log the event in which you earned the medal bc my first run through on white 2 i got a medalnf for discovering the pokerus and searched my box up and down and couldnt find an infected pkmn.
To this day i wonder if i traded it or if i earned the medal and didnt notice it
nd the infection timed out. I really have no idea when i earned
r what got me the medal
That, is the only flaw i see in the system.
We need tracking

Daydream January 12th, 2013 5:39 PM

I thought the medal system was quite an interesting little addition, and I like the idea of extra little challenges outside of ordinary gameplay. But, as other have said, actually receiving your medals was time-consuming. Also, if the system were to make a return, it would be nice to see it expanded upon a little, because I don't remember particular challenging ones to get. Maybe medals for more difficult things e.g. completing all Gym Battles/E4 with one type of Pokémon or catching X amount with a certain type of Pokéball.

I agree completely.

If they were to bring the feature back, I'd definitely hope that instead of acquiring your earned medals through someone, the game would give them to you along your adventure as you fill their requirements. It got really monotonous, having to click the guy numerous amounts of times (especially if you've racked up tons of medals), which made me quit wanting to gain them all.

BrandoSheriff January 12th, 2013 6:10 PM

I'd like to see the achievement system to return, but in a manner similar to the Xbox 360, where you unlock them as you go. I once sat in the Pokemon Center for 4 minutes getting medal after medal from that dude in Black 2. :/

They're like little extra challenges, giving me extra things to do besides all the story and postgame stuff, extending my playtime.

Deceit January 12th, 2013 7:14 PM

Medals were something that I didn't really care much about in B/W2, but it was still fun to collect them. I didn't try to collect all of them, but it wouldn't hurt to include this feature in X and Y. Oh, but I wish there was a way to get the medals faster, as some people got all their medals after the E4, and it took forever to get them all. I was thinking as an improvement, if there is more than 1 or 2 medals being earned then, it can say "Player received x medals!" Then it shows all the medals you just got on the next after that.

Ω Ruby and α Sapphire January 12th, 2013 7:47 PM

I think the Medal System was a great idea, the execution though wasn't great. It sucked having to collect them from the Pokecenter and how he gave them to you one at a time. I think a much better idea would be a little text box pops up saying you have received X medal and it falls onto the ground or something. Or you could just pick it up at the Pokecenter, that would work since you are being told when you have received one.

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire January 12th, 2013 7:57 PM

I would like the hint medals to turn into the actual medal, that way it'll be quicker to get the medals. I thought it was going to be that way in B2W2 actually, I was quite disapppointed to find out it wasn't that way...

Platinum Lucario January 12th, 2013 8:48 PM

It would actually be nice to have an achievement system, like there was in Pokémon Black Version 2 and White Version 2. Having the feeling of achievements seemed like you really had accomplished something spectacular. I'm getting this feeling that there probably won't be medals in Pokémon X and Y, but probably some other type of achievements system, which would be nice to have. :)

Brendino January 12th, 2013 10:44 PM

I think it would be cool if they continued forward with the medals, but have them show up instantaneous rather than having to go to a Pokemon Center and get each of them individually. I'd also like it if there were some sort of identifier when you get one (similar to an achievement on XBox / trophy on PS3), but I know some people might get annoyed by that. Maybe having them pop-up on the bottom screen or have the option to turn on/off the pop-up could provide the best of both worlds for players.

Ivysaur January 13th, 2013 1:24 AM

Seeing as how all games have achievements these days, I don't see why not. i found it rewarding and looked for the guy every time I entered a PC, so they certainly succeded at their goal with me.

Ho-Oh January 13th, 2013 2:16 AM

Medals are okay but boring thanks to the annoying man. Maybe just if they were automatically added to your medal case as they were achieved and it flashed with a "1, 2, 63" unchecked, kind of like an iPhone. I'd like to avoid speaking to the annoying man.

halcyonic January 13th, 2013 3:12 AM

The medal system did seem like a fun thing but I didn't focus on it too much. It was fun to receive a medal or two in B2W2 so yeah, I do want it back!

vaporeon7 January 13th, 2013 3:25 AM

I wouldn't mind if they made the achievement system like the one on the Xbox 360. It'd be a lot more convenient for everyone.

SolarAbusoru January 13th, 2013 10:56 AM

I liked the medal system, gave ya more to do through the whole game than just catch all the mons, I'd like to see it return.

Ugh, I agree, I think we do need a little sound effect or something to notify us that we earned an achievement/medal.

I hope this medal feature returns because I love completing things. I just hope that we don't have any crazy medals like [mocking voice]"play a funfest mission with 30 people[/mocking voice] or [mocking voice]pass by 1000 people[/mocking voice]. Because seriously, these were ridiculous. Why won't 5 people playing a funfest mission be enough? And why not pass by 100 people instead of 1000?... I will never get all the medals because of these two and I really don't have that thing for collecting that many medals in this game when I know I can't win them all.

I say, yes, bring the medal system back, but don't give us any ridiculously annoying medals that we have to rely on others to win them. At least they could let us make the funfest missions online.
