Hardest battle you've had in any Pokemon game?

For me, it'll have to be Red. I don't know why, but I can remember my Pokemon being in the lower 60's and Red's Pokemon being in the higher 80's and lower 90's...

WingedDragon February 6th, 2013 6:51 AM

Ya that was always a pain. Are you talking in the Gen2 remake or Gen 2 itself cuz Gen 2 itself was easy.

My hardest battles were against Whitneys Milktank. God was that hard

Basic_Psyduck February 6th, 2013 7:12 AM

Took me a few days to win against Misty, playing nonstop - except some toilet and meal breaks - for like 8 hours a day, in my very first time battling her in PKM BLUE, which was also the very first PKM game I played when I was 8 or 9. Thought games were designed for people to win easily and did not take it seriously at all. Misty was the first tough enemy I fought, and the Starmie's Bubblebeam owned my team in an instant, giving that it had taken me quite an effort to finish Staryu before that.

Those were the days when only the animation of Water Gun, the moving pixels, the gym fight music and the irritation from hopeless attempts to win could haunt me in my dreams. After that there were a few more challenging battles, but the first experience is always the best.

Kikaito plush February 6th, 2013 7:24 AM

My toughest battle was against Steven in Pokemon Sapphire. Even though our teams were evenly match in levels it still took me 4 days of trying to actually beat him.

HeracrossIsBoss February 6th, 2013 7:42 AM

Whitneys miltank hands down.

Correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't played Gen 2 in a long time, but I believe that Red's highest level is his Pikachu, which is 81. Still very hard, though.

For me, the hardest battle would be in Pokemon Ruby, against Tate & Liza. The highest leveled Pokemon I had was a Tentacool level 36, that I just caught (Haven't even sent it once to battle). I was unable to beat them until I really trained hard, but since I wanted to progress further into the game (First time playing 3rd generation), I didn't want to waste much time on training. So yeah... very hard battle xD

EJ February 6th, 2013 12:39 PM

Red was the hardest battle I've had without a doubt.

I don't really remember having particularly hard battles in the Pokémon story, I think I used to over-level my team quite a bit - and I definitely do now. I guess my hardest battle in any of the stories so far would probably be something with Dark Lugia in RoL.
I think the actual hardest battle I've had was probably in one of the few times I played with a friend after Gamesharking platinum. We both battled it out with legendaries, can't remember it entirely. I think one of us won out by using Darkrai's sleep moves, can't remember who actually won though.

Firox February 6th, 2013 2:46 PM

For me the one gym I struggled the most was with Iris in White. I had no high level dragons or any Pokemon with ice attacks. Even my high leveled Dewott (at 58) couldn't win. I lost 5 times. One of the hardest gym I had to face, all my Pokemon where getting knocked out in one hit, before I could even attack them. Then I realized that Dewott could learn Blizzard via HM. (I have to update my trainer card, I haven't done so in so long, I have all 8 badges now, majority of my team hasn't changed, Servine did evolve to Serperior)

My other hard gym was in Black 2, with Roxie, kept loosing fast with all my Pokemon getting poisoned. Back then I didn't have strong Pokemon either, no fire types. Didn't trade Pansear after the gym battle in Castelia City.

Amen. Tate & Liza were the bane of my existence. I never gave their gym much thought since I figured I'd get there, beat them, and leave, but it was never that simple.

Zero Percent February 6th, 2013 2:54 PM

Pokemon Ranger. The Legendary dogs took me well over a day to beat/capture. And don't even get me started on the Go-Go squad siblings...

Brendino February 7th, 2013 12:39 AM

The only two battles that I can ever recall struggling with were against Ghetsis in White, and Roxie in White 2. Both times I tried to face them with teams at a type disadvantage, but even after I lost, I was still too stubborn to change my team around. I think I lost to each of them 3 or 4 times before beating them with the same teams (with a lot of help from healing items).

SoulSilver10112 February 7th, 2013 2:26 PM

For me, it's Lucian. Between him and Cynthia, I had used all 23 of my revives. (In Diamond and Pearl) Another one is Elesa, and her annoying volt switch. Tate and Liza were also nightmares to battle. Also, Colress was hard for me to battle if I forgot to bring my fire types.

Hikamaru February 7th, 2013 3:10 PM

I've had several close calls, but that was just me using strategies or something.

For me, it would probably be Ghetsis in Black, his Pokemon kept KO'ing my team, forcing me to use Revive after Revive (and maybe even a Hyper Potion here and there) and it was down to just his Seismitoad and my Samurott. I manage to defeat him in the end but oh god that Hydreigon was such a rough thing, and I had trouble hitting it super-effectively. N would have to come in second thanks to the fact he leads with Reshiram/Zekrom and also has a powerful Archeops that I struggled against a lot thanks to the fact it was fast and hit hard.

Iris in Black 2 was almost as hard, as I had very little that could counter her Pokemon and I was surprised that after her Haxorus hit my Lucario with a Dragon Dance-boosted Earthquake, he did not get one-hit KO'd and I managed to defeat her. But oh god Earthquake caught me off guard.

Seth Rollins February 7th, 2013 3:16 PM

Uhh...I dunno...well, only 3 battles really were a challenge...OK. Here it goes:

1.Red. G/S/C/HG/SS. Really...he's strong, isn't he? Well, I could beat him, only 3 times. Really, only 3 times...I had to use Hyper potions and Max revives all the time...O_O
2. Ghetsis. BW. OK...his team was a challengee, BUT I could beat him in my 3rd battle because my friend traded his Rayquaza for my ChanseyLugia for a while.
3. Whitney G/S/C/HG/SS. DAT MILTANK!

Chaos Fork February 7th, 2013 3:24 PM

I found Red kinda easy, even with my team only being lv70+
I admit, my hardest battle was the gen 5 elite 4. ALL OF THEM. (Except Shauntal, he (or she whatever) was easy.)

jfuze174 February 7th, 2013 3:39 PM

the Last battle with Blue in the original Pokemon Red was a major pain in my ass and it took me atleast a week to beat red in the original gold back when i was a kid other than that never had a battle too tough

KingSquirtle February 8th, 2013 5:27 AM

Hardest one that was fare and not just me going against some super leveled character? Lol I think it was the hardest and most fun battle I ever had. Cynthia in white. I lost quite spectacularly to her once so I came back after a bit. I used samurott 76 haxorus 67 bisharp 69 volcarona 74 kyurem 78 beheeyem 63. We were just going back and forth and I had no revives. It was like real serious equal matched battling. So exhilarating. In the end with just 29/180 hp left, beheeyem managed to get one last thunder shock in to finish her milotic. The milotic shot my beheeyem down to 29 hp from 180 with a single water pulse and my beheeyem moved second. I was so scared the bar would keep dropping. I was thinking no no no no please stop please stop please stop!!! Such an amazingly satisfied feeling afterwards.

Guy February 8th, 2013 12:53 PM

FireRed. Lorelei. This was years ago, but I had such a difficult time battling Lorelei the first time I played FireRed. I lost to her numerous times before I got so upset and restarted the game. Nothing has been as challenging for me since then.

Cerberus87 February 8th, 2013 2:44 PM

That Veteran in Challenger's Cave with a team of Snorlax, Excadrill and some other OU Pokémon. Would've been easier if I wasn't underleveled.

icycatelf February 8th, 2013 3:22 PM

Probably Red in HeartGold Version. I even traded myself two LV.100 Pokémon and still lost the first two times.

Next to that, probably Whitney's Miltank (Silver) or Lorelei (Red).

Caelus February 8th, 2013 11:22 PM

Probably Red in HG/SS. He was already tough to beat in GSC but they took it to another level in the remakes. That Pikachu I'm pretty sure was a level 88 and his other Pokemon were at least level 83.

CloysterOyster February 9th, 2013 4:30 PM

Red in Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal, and the Battle Tower in Olivine City in the Crystal version. I beat Red a few times but the Battle Tower trainers killed me. The legendary dogs (Raikou, Entei and Suicune) gave me a run for my money too, especially when they use Roar on me or run away.

Mr. Whiscash February 9th, 2013 5:02 PM

Trying to fight Claire in SS with only Pokemon based on predatory animals. Also they're underleveled.

heyo February 9th, 2013 10:48 PM

Definitely Whitney. Her Miltank has godlike strength.

DowntownDumpling February 10th, 2013 7:51 AM

I found the battle with Cynthia in Black to be very difficult.

RenegadeClyde February 10th, 2013 10:35 AM

Morty and Whitney in GSC: The only problem I had with Morty was his Gengar. DAT HYPNOSIS. In my first battle with Whitney, I lost badly. (Miltank's rollout totally slain my Quilava. >_>) But for some reason I've won the second battle easily. (Maybe because she kept missing the rollout. '-')
Steven In Ruby: It was a tough battle, especially when I was fighting against his Cradily and Armaldo.
Iris in White: I did not have ANY Pokémon that could fight against dragons. And her Haxorus is insane.

Shayminlover123 February 14th, 2013 12:15 AM

Either Glacia in Emerald or Aaron from D/P/Pt

Canen February 14th, 2013 6:44 AM

Candice with that arsewipe Frosslass in Snowpoint, underlevelled squad and type mismatched.

Alexander Nicholi February 14th, 2013 7:17 AM

I'd say Wallace in R/S as a gym leader and as the champion in Emerald. Didn't he have a Kingdra that was a enormous pain?

PsytronicX February 14th, 2013 8:46 AM

Honestly never saw what the fuss about Whitney's Miltank was; I mean they gave you Machop in the exact same city. It had super-effective against the entire gym and in addition resisted Rollout.

On-topic, probably Red in the original Gold. I did a Jigglypuff solo run a while back and I had to grind it to 100 to get there (and even then I had to use half a dozen revives/full restores).

Faore February 14th, 2013 12:06 PM

My hardest battle was Volkner in Platinum. My highest lv was a lv 56 Empoleon. All my others were below lv 40.

Toutebelle February 21st, 2013 9:03 AM

Iris in Black 2. She was a nightmare. This was during the rematch - she wasn't too bad for the initial match. Her first four Pokemon didn't put up a fight, but her Archeops was a killer with its Stone Edge and Acrobatics. Then, when I finally beat it, she pulled out the big gun: Haxorus. That Haxorus was the hardest Pokemon I ever faced, what with Dragon Dance and Outrage. It took me 15 Revival Herbs. Luckily my Chandelure's Flame Body was able to burn it. I kept spamming Revival Herbs until the burn caused Haxorus to faint. Thank God Iris used up her Full Restores before Haxorus. (At least this was normal mode - if it were Challenge Mode, Iris might have used a Full Restore.)

Nishino in Castelia City was also hard. His Lickilicky had four uber moves and they kept fainting my Pokemon.

Cheren was pretty hard for a first Gym Leader. Riolu had no good Fighting moves, and Cheren's Lillipup kept using Work Up.

ledmeastray February 22nd, 2013 2:49 AM

My hardest battle by far was way way way back in the day when i had just gotten my first ever copy of red. I had never played pokemon. Not even knowing what to expect from the elite four, i rushex in and Agatha that old hag beat me so many times. Her gengar rocked me. Ughh, i hate you Agatha.

Elaitenstile February 22nd, 2013 3:23 AM

Cynthia in Black. Definitely the best, that Garchomp + Outrage and Eelektross + Dragon Claw wiped me off. First my Hax, then Excadrill, and creamed everyone else as well. Next time I took in Reshiram and Kyurem... I feel sorry now.

LHT February 28th, 2013 3:10 PM

For me the hardest battle I've ever had is Shauntal in BW1, she managed to DESTROY my Arceus in lvl 89, even with type disadvantage.
Second, I think is Elesa in BW2, I hate that Emolga.

Besides that, Cynthia in BW2 is a *****.

Relith March 2nd, 2013 11:31 AM

Surprisingly, I had a good time with Red. (I used the exact same team he used, but I had lower leveled pokes)

Whitney's miltank kept rolling my pokemon for 3-6 days before I finally prevailed.

Apollo March 3rd, 2013 7:15 AM

Mine was May in Emerald, in that Cycling Road route. Our Pokemon had the same levels, but her Combusken was very hard to defeat. ): Second has to be Whitney and her Miltank, and Brawly would be the third, I guess.

Sableye~ March 4th, 2013 8:17 AM

Red on the Gen II remakes was pretty darn hard. I had to trade over some of my better Pokemon from Diamond version to battle him. Took me two tries and a crazy amount of Pokemon reviving and health restoring.

PlatinumDude March 4th, 2013 9:00 AM

Wallace in Emerald. I hated going against that Milotic. Red in HG/SS comes close.

skyluigi2 March 4th, 2013 10:31 AM

Honestly, Sidney from the Hoenn Elite Four. I HATED him so much. That Shiftry... and Cacturne, not to mention I always picked Swampert. I got beaten by that guy so many times.
The rest of the Elite Four in Hoenn? Champion? Pushovers. But Sidney... *shudder*
Second has to be May when she's in front of the Lilycove Department store. I wanted to get in there so badly, but no matter what I did, my Pokemon always seemed drastically underlevelled for that battle. Took me so long to beat.

Babebraham March 4th, 2013 1:19 PM

Rival as the champ in Red. I had an oddish left and he had a venasaur left and it took me an hour to beat him by using cut.

Mr. Whiscash March 4th, 2013 3:00 PM

Oh god I suddenly started having Flashbacks to Cynthia in Diamond version. I repeat, oh god.

Mr Cat Dog March 4th, 2013 3:32 PM

The hardest battle that I eventually won was Ghetsis in Black. It took me three attempts to do so, and it ended up in a 1-on-1 battle between us. It's also one of the few battles that I've physically felt exhausted after finishing it, which never normally happens with me in Pokemon games. Granted, I was probably a fair bit underlevelled (which also never usually happens) but still... it was hard, guys!

B-L-A-Z-E March 4th, 2013 6:38 PM

My opinion on this has changed over the years, and currently I have to say Sabrina from yellow or Whitney from gold and silver if I start with Chikorita.

Altair March 4th, 2013 8:32 PM

Pokemon Champion Gary/Blue in Pokemon Yellow, I can barely remember the fight as I was much younger, however that Arcanine proved to be a handful.

X-Lan March 5th, 2013 2:36 PM

I agree about may under the cycling road, the starter in that battle was always vicious.

Munchlax11 March 5th, 2013 4:04 PM

I remember battling my rival in firered when he was champion. On like my 15th try I beat him on a lucky critical hit after my Blastoise luckily held on at 3 HP.

Altair March 6th, 2013 2:20 AM

That Grovyle was such a pain, put the smack down on my Marshtomp, I didn't have a Taillow on my team... x/
Combusken on my other runs through was trouble as well, Marshtomp however crumbles with any grass type move.

Hi Its Nick March 10th, 2013 9:44 AM

The 2 twins in emerald who run that gym Claydol and Solrock or w/e it was is a pain....

I agree with this guy, those kids were beyond annoying

The Corrupt Plague March 10th, 2013 7:57 PM

Evice in Pokemon Colosseum. I was way too many levels behind him the first time and was only able to get through with dumb luck.

Aryan143 March 10th, 2013 8:27 PM

Tate and Liza of Hoenn was so hard. I was a begnning trainer at that point and had Blaziken and others between levels 20-25. I actually won because my Wobbufet used Destiny bond.

Diversion March 10th, 2013 9:06 PM

Tate and Liza, it took me 3 days to beat them.
But they're not just beyond annoying, they're far beyond annoying.
In emerald that is. They were pretty easy in RS.

Warship March 15th, 2013 8:17 AM

cynthia from pearl. she was a beast and the only properly leveled pokemon in my party was my torterra and palkia :P

Zorogami March 15th, 2013 8:35 AM

I think the hardest battles for me were both in the Hoenn Region:
The Double Battle fight Tate and Liza was pretty hard, especially since i had Blaziken.
But the hardest battle ever for me was Champion Steven and his Metagross...

Student D1 March 18th, 2013 2:49 AM

I had difficulty with the champion of R/S/E. I'm talking about both champions, Steven in Ruby/Sapphire and Wallace in Emerald. My Pokémon weren't that very strong at that time. Steven's Metagross was hard to beat for sure, and I had trouble with Wallace because his Water-type Pokémon had Ice-type moves, and it would greatly damage Sceptile, my starter.

Other than that, Tate and Liza was also a hard duo to beat, especially in Emerald since they had additional two Pokémon. I hate it when they use a Hyper Potion, and they have two of it!

PokeLordAndrew March 18th, 2013 6:04 AM

Tate and Liza take the cake.
However in hacked games, Wood's Leafeon (Victory Fire version)
Has nuts defense, holds a sitrus berry, is only second gym, leader has 5 super potions.
I hated him so much.

Golden Warrior March 18th, 2013 7:45 AM

The toughest battle I've ever had was with Elite Four in Pokemon Black and White, surprisingly enough. It took me around 8-10 tries to get them done with and when I did the rest was easy.

Although, right now Flannery's Torkoal is going to be coming in a close second place... why can't I beat it... Oh, right, his defense.

lazy~ March 18th, 2013 7:59 AM

It took my days to beat Brock the first time I played through yellow because I was really young and inexperienced back then and the only Pokemon I had was Pikachu. I don't think I've ever struggled with a gym leader that much before.

LyokoGirl5000 March 18th, 2013 8:55 AM

Lorelei in Yellow. If I get past her, I can beat the rest of the Elite Four, but that rarely happens. Pikachu can't take a hit and her stupid Cloyster has ridiculous Special Defense. It doesn't help that almost all of her Pokemon are part Water, meaning a Fire or Ground type still has a disadvantage.

TrainerJacob March 18th, 2013 5:24 PM

It took me at least 3 tries to get past Falkner in HeartGold, his Pidgeotto was a killer at first and wiped out my team with either it's gust or peck. However, on my third try, since my Level 9 Chikorita had some HP left, I used poison powder, which really helped and along with some of HootHoot and Ratman the Rattata's moves, I defeated Falkner.

Boilurn March 18th, 2013 6:21 PM

I've only played the Generation 5 games, but Elesa was the most difficult for me. Her Emolgas kept pulverizing my starter and Fossil Pokemon (Which were Dewott and Archen respectively at the time) and staticizing my others which makes this overall battle very annoying. I had to use a few fresh waters and Paralyz Heals to get through this annoying battle, but I eventually did make it about three days later.

Tyrael March 18th, 2013 10:41 PM

Tate and Liz were horrible. I would say those two are the worst, followed by Sabrina in RBY. At that point in time there were really no types that beat her and hers always seemed to outspeed everything.

CrowSvenson March 18th, 2013 10:50 PM

Brock, when I made the mistake of ever choosing Charmander.

JoeSchneider March 28th, 2013 1:34 AM

jeez I pwnd Red's pikachu with my piloswine. :D.

Well, my hardest battle was Wallace. his pokemon were very bulky especially tentacruel ang milotic.

Sarah Morgan March 28th, 2013 1:45 AM

Norman in pokemon Emerald.

Every time I got his Slaking down to critical it hit me with, a critical hit.

Vegetunks937 March 28th, 2013 3:05 AM

I also found Red hard. My were in the late 70's. He was something to fight.

Demon Days April 6th, 2013 10:09 PM

Holy crap, nearly everything in Hoenn apart from Norman, Roxanne and the actual Elite Four part of the Elite Four was hard for me in Emerald. Tate & Liza were pains in the... well, everywhere. It was nearly impossible to bet their Xatu and Claydol combo.

CakeGuy April 6th, 2013 10:36 PM

Red of HGSS course, you'll have to battle him with all his pokemon at level 80s, straight form the level 50s of Blue

imo the definition of a hard battle is how much grind and planning you need to do before taking on that trainer. In this aspect Red from HGSS definitely wins.

Gligar April 7th, 2013 2:54 AM

In Pokemon Sapphire Vs the last Gym leader, Wallace.
His Milotic kept using recover! I probably failed 20 times!
