First few times I tried to watch from the start (of the reboot, anyway) - that second episode about the end of the world with the skin lady was just so... cheese. Unbearable XD About to start the Dalek episode now |
I like the Dalek episode a lot. It's eerie in a way they don't quite manage to do in Eleven's series.
Plus, it's got one of the most beautiful soundtracks: Spoiler:

Dance puppet dance! Only two weeks till the next doctor, I'm so giddy. |

He's going mad either way, if the previews are anything to go by. I really think the best thing about this season is the fact that he's going past acceptance for the time war, considering how Gallifrey is now saved. But the question of "What Now" will haunt him, which is still cool. "What Now" plots are my favorite, when the character aimlessly tries to find out what to do with their selves.
|
What'd he do in the old series? I'm new at this so I know little of it, but I thought the Time War was an Eighth (and War, I guess) Doctor thing
|
Quote:
For example, did you know he had part in wiping out the dinosaurs and possibly even making humans appear on Earth. Dat Doctor. |
The time war is a strictly new series concept, that has been hanging over the series' head since day one. Now that its covered, they can literally do anything they want with the doctor, the way he treats certain situations, and give us overarching plots that don't tie in with his personality.
|
I liked how RTD's era always had some Time War angst. Not sure I like at all how they suddenly retconned it. Because I refuse to believe that they planned to bring Gallifrey all the way from series 1 of new who :/ then again... By making Gallifrey exist, they can finally bring the show back to its roots a bit more.
|
Nah, time war angst got old by the time series 4 came out. I don't consider it a retcon as much as a restructuring of the series, as I personally think that in the end they regretted the move. I think in the beginning they wanted to stay more rooted to Earth, but then quickly shifted to its more alien roots.

For those of you keeping up with my Who escapades, I've just started the tenth Doctor run. Liking it so far

Favorite Doctor: Five/Peter Davison, he was my first Doctor- I'll explain why after this sign up form. Favorite Companion: I don't really have a favourite but I like Rory, I mean he got a red Jaguar E-Type which is my favourite car! But in all seriousness I like Rory because he has some really funny moments and he is a badass. My relationship with Doctor Who started off as a rocky one, all I can remember is I saw a Doctor Who documentary when I was about 5 (So in about 2000/2001) which absolutely terrified me for some reason and all the way until the end of 2005 I feared anything Doctor Who related until the day I went round a friend's house during the Christmas holidays. So when I was there we started watching a fifth doctor episode- can't remember which one though :/. I really enjoyed it, without knowing it was a program I had feared for 4/5 years until the opening sequence for the second episode came on. I can't really remember much else from that except that I really liked the fifth doctor, and I ended up watching the 2005 Christmas Special because Doctor Who wasn't as scary I had thought. Let's just say I spent quite a bit of my Christmas money on video tapes of the fifth doctor's stories... :P Even now, at the age of 18 I will go for my fifth doctor DVDs over any other doctors, but I still enjoy watching the newer stuff. (Currently Eleven/Matt is my favourite new 'Who Doctor but I have a feeling Capaldi is going to change that) I am really looking forward to this series, I am continuing my tradition of watching new episodes with my boyfriend and a Chinese takeaway and am now saving up to take the both of us to Cardiff to go to the Doctor Who Experience- I went when it was in London- since he has been buying me quite a few Doctor Who DVDs recently. |
Welcome to the club, ye timorous beastie!
I like the fifth Doctor too :) Still haven't had time to watch all his episodes, but I will get around to it. I actually liked when they were four in the TARDIS, with the Doctor, Adric, Tegan and Nyssa. They could have made better use of the characters and weaved them into the stories rather than whiff away some character for each episodes. Such as Nyssa having a headache once and Tegan getting left on Heathrow (though they did a great job incorporating her cousin when she got back!). Basically, if the fifth Doctor's stories had been made with today's technology and standards of acting, they would have been amazing. Just think of how epic and heart-tugging Earthshock could have been!! I mean, more than it already is. In other news, spoiler for Clara and Danny Pink in S8: Spoiler:
I'm sort of hoping that this new Doctor will get a male companion eventually, sort of like Turlough :D been so many young girls defining the series. Donna was the only real fresh breeze among them, honestly. |
Favorite Doctor: 11. I loved how Matt Smith portrayed Ethernet doctor as a young face with an ancient, troubled heart.
Favorite Companion: Martha. She seemed like a change of pace in the new series. My journey through time and space started in college. My roommate and I binge watched series one Anne 2, then most of Classic Who. Been hooked since. Can't wait for Saturday. |

Favorite Doctor: It's kind of a tie between the 9th, 10th, and 11th. I haven't really seen the older series, so I don't know about the classic doctors. But there are qualities in each of the newer doctors that I love. Favourite Companion: Definitely Rory Williams. Who's excited about the new episodes? Just a bit over a day to go! |
Oh god, today's the day. Not gonna be able to see it tonight, but tomorrow is definitely going to be a great day. Nothing like a new doctor(and at an hour and a half no less) to set off the winter.
|
Welcome to the club, Dex and Evanlyn!
I'm hyper excited! Can't see it tonight but will try to somehow find it tomorrow. I don't think it's on television here in my country. |
I've just started the 6th season in the main series. With this progression, my order of preference of Doctors has somewhat changed by including Matt Smith. I still love David Tennant, but him and Mr. Bowties-are-cool are almost side by side in terms of which one I like better. It's so hard to choose! The feeling of the two Doctors fighting for first place is so...argh! D:
So far, I'm really, really enjoying the series. There have been some episodes that really tugged at my heartstrings and made me use up tissue after tissue, some that made me cower behind my hands in eager fear, while there are some that made me think quite deeply about things and changed how I viewed certain aspects of life. Continuing bravely on like the proud Whovian I am! <3 Edit: I also forgot to add that Donna Noble has replaced Rose as my favourite companion. Amy Pond and Rory are great as well, but Donna cannot be beat. She and David Tennant make the most perfect team. <3 OI! Space man! |
^See, when you catch up to current Who, you can start with the classics.
Glad I got in here before the spoilers did. I plan to record it on DVR tonight since I work. Of course that means I'm going to have the living snot spoiler'd out of me by the time I get to see it. I'm hopeful for a darker Doctor. Hopefully, Clara will be gone soon, can't quite stand her. I haven't been a fan of the companions lately. Rory I liked, and Amy a little, but they felt cheesy in the end. And Clara is a cardboard cut out, I swear. Give us an interesting companion again! Give us a Donna, a Rose, an Ace or a Sara Jane. Hell give us Adric, I'll survive him for a few more seasons. Ugh. Looking up. If I like the new season I might bring back my Doctor Who theme on my profile and stuffs. Also... things to note. Spoiler:
|
I've been meaning to join this club for months now. But I didn't want to because I didn't have the knowledge enough to become part of it. But now that I finished 9 and 10 (and only watched parts of 11), I'm really excited for the premiere of 12. Peter Capaldi is perfect for that role, and I look forward to how this new series will turn out. I know it'll be great.
I'm planning to watch Classic Who when I get around to it. I'm glad it's on Netflix! I'm actually pretty stoked for tonight's premiere, but I also have a NASCAR race to watch tonight, but hey, I gotta prioritize my Whovianness lmao. xD PokéCommunity Username: Cadance Favorite Doctor: it's...a tie between 10 and 11. But I'm more of a fan of David Tennant <3 Favorite Companion: Donna Noble! I loved every episode featuring her. <3 |
Who else watched the premiere? I got up at 5am my time to watch it! I enjoyed it, I think this is going to shape up to be a great season!

Mwah! I'm back home - time to somehow get my hands on the new ep!! Before I click any spoilers in this thread :p
Please keep anything related to Deep Breath in spoilers until further notice... As you already are :D my derpy phone put me on the last page when I typed up my post. Edit: Seen it now!! I agree, Ultraviolence! That was amazing, I mean Spoiler:
And also I really liked how Spoiler:
Overall I thought they made it a bit too snappy and dramatic, especially with music :s I miss the mood setting tunes of Tennant's era, it really had the best music. Well, Nine's too but the music I listen to on spotify from there are remade versions of the S1 songs that were featured more or less in S2. Watch "Dalek" or "Silence in the library/Forest of the dead" and concentrate on the music and you shall see what I mean! It's very different to how they do it in "Eleventh Hour", for instance. Even though I really like the little Amy themes too :3 but we don't need upbeat or loud music all the time to enjoy a scene :/ Oh, and talking about Deep Breath again, the ending... Spoiler:
I just gotta add that I loved the interaction and chemistry between Clara and Twelve in general! Looking forward to see how they develop through the season. |
Saw it :D Kind of watching the 12th and the 10th simultaneously now since I'm behind. But what's a little bending of time in the grand scheme of things really?
Spoiler:
|
Well I watched the episode again and... While I love Capaldi's effort and think that he will make a great Doctor, I don't like the overall writing.
Spoiler:
Just, as far as newly-regenerated-Doctor episodes go, this really isn't my favorite :3 EDIT: you guyyyys. I just posted my DW fanfic on PC. Not sure people will see it or want to read it on a pokémon forum but wynaut xD Maybe check it out if you're a fan of either Ten or Amy. Or both! http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?p=8417573#post8417573 |
Okay finally saw this. And well, it was good, it was bad, it was excellent, but it was all over the place. No consistency, and I wouldn't say that it was deliberate cause of the doctor being so or some bull like that. They need to get things in order for this to work, but when they will I suspect the show will be amazing. So yeah thoughts:

wow, Muffin, check your spelling again ;D
Welcome to the club, Raiu! Ten and Amy are my favorites too~ I think. Unfortunately I think it would be a bit bad if we started talking streaming websites here. And everyone was happy and friendly in the club again :D
I've realized that I probably don't like Capaldi's Doctor too much... I mean I was really looking forward to him, but he hasn't impressed me over these two episodes like Smith did with Eleventh Hour and onwards. Smith was instantly the Doctor, despite me mourning the cute Tennant like the fangirl I couldn't help but being. I mean, Smith was rather brilliant actually. Capaldi... needs some more time I think. Or maybe it's just me needing time to understand that the Doctor wasn't always hyperactive and friendly. |
Quote:
I really like Capaldi. He reminds me a lot of Seven and Three. He's more the Doctor to me than Eleven was. The Doctor isn't meant to be a comedy sketch. The Doctor is an old, OLD man that wears funny clothes and travels through time and space with a friend and has a habit of stopping bad things. The funny and quirky bits are there yes, but all the New Who Doctors have had this darkness in them, something the classic Doctors didn't have. It was a story of adventure and helping people. It turned into sometimes adventure and mostly feels. The 'lonely angel' Ten was the pinnacle of that era. Eleven rode it like a dead horse. He was like a ten year old with a tantrum. This 'last of their species' thing is all new. But now, spoiler for Fiftieth, Gallifrey is returned. He's not alone. Which is why I think the show can return to its roots. The lone survivor thing was cool, but so were the Time Lords, sometimes. Eleven should have left a long, long time ago. Also, this Missy is so the Master. With the return of Gallifrey and the anagram RYCBAR and the previous anagram, YANA, "Run you clever boy and remember, you are not alone." YANA was the Master, and Gallifrey never was destroyed, meaning everything in Tennant's ending didn't happen. The Master is most likely alive... and regenerated into a woman, which is awesome. Missy=Mistress female form of Master. |
I feel like having a female Master is at least a good measure in addressing the issue of why can't the doctor be female. He could if he wanted to, but it would be a change to the character. But with the Master, having them turn female is a great twist, and makes you think twice if gender really is an issue. So yeah, I'm all for Missy. As for your post phantom, I agree mostly. I was brought in with NuWho, but having dipped into the classics recently, I feel the same about Matt. He was good, but he was running on the coattails of the 10th.
|
I think it's not necessarily a bad thing that NuWho was different. I really liked the lone survivor take on the thing and all the underlying feels and guilt that shaped Ten (and to some extent Eleven). Some say it was horrible that Rose and Nine/Ten was pretty much a love story but I think it's totally okay to angle the show in a way that will attract viewers these days. Love stories are a nice side/background plot.
And aside from Moffat's clumsy writing (and some other authors too) here and there, I really enjoyed the different feel in Eleven's series. They were a chapter of their own, with the Ponds and River. I don't at all think that they need to go back to their roots, but from what I've heard that's what the showrunners want to do these days maybe to make the old Whovians more content. Fair enough, but maybe some new Whovians won't like it as much. It's a win/lose situation, we'll see what comes out of it. |
Honestly, I'm bothered a bit by new Who fans. Sort of annoyed actually.
They fangirl and stuff. You don't see classic fans doing that. I'm so tired of the Doctor being hit on by people I could vomit. |
We each have our own opinion. Just respect that and don't vomit in this thread please :)
EDIT: I read this on the wikipedia page for Series 8 and found it really cool. But I did like the last 11th Doctor intro a bit better. At least the song. Quote:

I've been away on vacation. I think I've missed two episodes. Going to catch up on them now.
I did watch six episodes from Tenth's series though on my trip as plane fare EDIT: Okay. Watched them. I know nothing of Classic Who, I don't know if Twelve is more like that so far or not. To me, compared to the last three Doctors this one just... doesn't seem to care? Like he's not having fun |
Quote:
I also just feel the need to share this adorable moment by the Eight Doctor: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XzWScOQ1Ijo#t=2444 I just love the randomness and Grace's look xD |
Okay, missed the last two, started episode 2 a couple of minutes ago. I love the new theme, everyone is crazy for hating it. Especially the hammers in the beginning that go along with the cogs. Anyway, this episode, it started out good, I think. Dom Com stuff is a bit NuWho, but I don't mind it at all. The head-desk bit was touching, and it actually felt like the response of someone who can't gather courage to ask out someone else.(But dude, WTF, Jenna Coleman starts hitting on you, you don't say no!) As for the doctor, damn. 3 weeks. At least Clara is getting used to the indifference of this Doctor, and so am I. Its nice to see some I don't give a ****s from the main character of a show these days, everyone's so gung-ho on TV in general. Will update post when episode is over. HOLY CRAP. Just got to the uh....stomach scene. Yeah, doctor might be going a bit far.
Edit: 15 minutes into robin hood. The arching butt being blown up by the screwdriver after the doctor basically saying "Screw It" is my favorite NuWho moment now. Just soooo good. Overall this episode is eh, campy and a fun romp. Nothing more. |
What'd everybody think of "Listen"?
Spoiler:
|
WHY AM I NOT A MEMBER OF THIS
I honestly like the 12th. He reminds me of the classic doctors (which some people might not even know of). He's so indifferent and crazy, I love it. Note: spoiler might contain spoiler about Listen (surprise surprise). open with caution! Spoiler:

Also liking Martha Jone's theme in the musical score. |
There's quite a few cool episodes in the Martha and Donna series :) I should rewatch S3 just to look for clues for the series finale actually... Hint hint ;) And yeah, I just wished they had kept that nice quirk up, quoting Lion King and Harry Potter etc. He becomes less nerdy later.
|
The donna era could have been the best NuWho series so far if they didn't have the horrible RTD looming over it. She was a great, no-**** companion, easily my favorite of all of the companions so far. All the love stuff with Rose was cringe-worthy, Martha was flatter then a piece of paper, and Amy went on faaaar too long. Rory was okay, and Clara unfortunately is getting into a character that's likely only getting another 8 eps. Otherwise she would be up there with Donna for me. But yeah, poor, poor Donna. Best Companion in the worst run of episodes. Except for the Adipode opener. Those things are adorable, and so is the doctor/Donna relationship.
|
It's really interesting how people can have such different opinions on the companions and adventures in DW. Thinking back, I loved Rose and Nine and Ten, but the big stories where Martha and Donna came into the picture and also Jack occasionally, were awesome imo. And I adore Amy Pond and think her and Rory's time in the TARDIS was amazing (but it should have ended after S6 with the Doctor letting them live a normal life together after River told them he was still alive imo). Clara's plot was cool but as a character she's not really unique and feels mostly like she's overstaying her welcome with Twelve.
Give us another Rory or Turlough already! Some fun male companion for a change! |
A bit disappointed with how they concluded Martha, to be honest. I'd rather not elaborate on it since some people might not have seen it, but basically she got married to another character who had something to do with a previous companion. Though I'm not fond of her entirely. I absolutely loved Donna. Amy was alright, but I'm not fond of how she was Eleventh's companion for far too long. Clara is...disappointing, to be honest. The plot that involved her was cool but I feel that it's too over the top.
What if the Doctor regenerated into a woman? :o Would he (err, she) grab a hold of a male companion? Moreover, is regenerating into a woman something that he's able to do? I know other Time Lords have done it, though I question whether it was influenced by said Time Lord's moral choices. |

Honestly... u.u I prefer RTD over Moffet as a showrunner. At least RTD kills characters and leaves them dead... and knows how to write women, not just girls.
|
Quote:
I heard another thing too: in the RTD era, the Doctor's companions started off as common people who weren't special at all (a shopgirl, a med student and a temp with huge insecurities) but in their time with him, they grew as persons and became brilliant. Rose became a defender of the Earth in a parallel world, Martha became a cool military something and Donna saved reality and went on to finally find a husband and live a good life. But Amy had the cracks in the universe and River Song plot revolving around her and Clara had half a season of mystery surrounding her. It wasn't until the end that Amy and Rory almost left the Doctor to live normal human lives instead, and it seems like Clara might do that at the end of S8... They were special right off the bat instead of feeling like regular people that we could connect with who then grew to become something more. |
Boop. Has anybody seen the latest episode yet? I'm really quite interested because they're supposedly robbing a bank, as hinted in the last episode's trailer haha
EDIT: additionally, i came across this peculiar image haha Spoiler:
|
I haven't watched any of the newest series! To any who have: Compared to Matt Smith's first run, how is Peter Capaldi faring so far?
|
Capaldi is a bat**** insane sociopath, with no regard to anybody's lives. Okay, over-exaggerating a bit, but he is nothing like Smith at all. Smith was a whimsical fairy tale character, Capaldi is Old-Who Doctor with a vengeance. Watching Listen now.
Spoiler:
|
I liked the whimsical fairy-tale more. New Who was great with Tennant and Smith's craziness, it didn't have to go old school imo. This is the 21st century, not the 20th :) but I won't stop watching Twelve's run. The adventures are still cool and I hope Capaldi might get better pnce he gets rid of Clara ;)
|
Clara or no Clara Capaldi is amazing. If you think that he's not firing on all cylinders now, you are wrong. Although I do admit that I want to see if he gets softer or harder with clara's leaving. And yeah, done with listen. That was just insane, those last 16 minutes. Clara's screwing with time, THAT scene, it was almost perfect.
|
Capaldi is doing fine. It's just the character I'm not totally sold on yet. There's no fun in what that Doctor does
|
Quote:
|
The barn canonically is on Gallifrey. And Gallifrey isn't time-locked anymore, but it's hidden. Usually the TARDIS wouldn't be able to get there, but because The Doctor disabled the limitations (allowing them to go to the end of the universe), I guess it allow them to go there, too.
|
Its on Gallifrey, I agree. The urgency in Clara's eyes(I love em to be honest) is enough to see that they should not be there, or at least its too early for them to be there. God knows what else would happen on top of the Doctor returning, like him meeting his child self for one.

Shuttity up up up has to be the best catch phrase of the doctor. Time Heist was fun, if a bit unfocused. But eh, I usually go with the mantra that if a show can carry me for 40-50 minutes and I still want more that its good. And I loved the "I was going for minimalism and came out with a magician" line. The plot was pretty fun, and I love the presentation. Also is it me, or is the doctor gaining some humanity? Or at least seemingly so. Last but not least, what a low budget. I counted what, 3 sets?
Edit:Also catching up on the back end of 7. Only saw name/day of the doctor, to be properly catched up, but never the inbetween bits. |

Although the various rooms are different, the hall is the same throughout. You can tell in that one shot that looks foggy that it was just to hide the vault door.
|
Hahaha I don't think about low budget things unless someone points it out. I read somewhere that "Fear Her" was incredibly low budget, which is why we didn't get any CGI (almost) and nearly no variation in setting (they stayed on one lil street). I knew I disliked that episode for some reasons, but after I read that, I'm not sure I can rewatch it in the same way again :p
|
Jesus Christ, did you have to remind me of the episode?! The budget in RTD era was worse sure, but that episode didn't suck cause of that. The little kid read her lines all the way through, and the plot was terrible. Where's the bleach, I need to forget it all over again...

Ooh, I've got to go watch the new episode :33 I'll be back with plenty of opinions later, probably!
EDIT: There! Okay, imo that was the best episode of the season so far. Back to basics, somehow. Doctor mentioned River, aawh :D And some things he said, yeah xD "The walls need sponging and there's a sinister puddle." "There has been a spillage." |
Yeah, I thought the River reference was a little surprising
|
Quote:
|
Damn was that a fine episode. I love the cold openings, much more natural then the rest of the series. One thing especially that comes off more natural as well is the sitcom feel. For the first time in 10 years they've finally nailed down the perfect balance of epic sci-fi and something fawlty towers like in the same episode. Not sure how I would feel about a teen companion if that's what Courtney would be, but maybe if they give us Danny as well along with her it could be fun.
|
Quote:
"there has been a spillage" |
Yeah, but it just felt like the way they introduced her along with how well they got along that it would be one of those things. Unless the next episode gives us a future Courtney, then it could be interesting.
|
Am I the only one who would really want to see a male companion to the Doctor?
