Running Shoes
The running shoes were a feature that first appeared in the generation III games and have appeared ever since. They allowed for faster travel when you held down the B button without the need for a bike. So what are your thoughts on the running shoes? Do you think they were one of the highlights of this generation? How could they have been improved?

They were a nice addition, and something I am glad they kept in the games. Yay for not needed to walk slowly!
One thing still bugs me about it though - and that's having to hold the B button. It's something they fixed in HGSS too and then unfixed, so it's something I hope is rectified in later games. After all, having to hold the button for all that time was kinda annoying. Otherwise I... don't have that much opinion on them. Nice until the bike/indoors in later games, but that's basically all there is to it. |
The greatest invention since sliced bread tbqh.

Awesome addition. :D Like bobandbill said, though- I don't like having to hold the B button down constantly. But that said, I've gotten so used to doing that that I still hold it down when I've tapped the shoes in HG. *shrug* I never played prior to Gen III but I've watched my friend Kelsey play Yellow and I would not have been able to move that slowly all the time wow. :|

The running shoes were probably my most used form of transportation, even after I got the bikes.
Look... I completely agree with this: Quote:

Pretty much the only reason I didn't get drunk and raven on how slow the guy is in a GBA console. But in my emu I pressed B and, well, wheeee!
~ Okay, so we couldn't run indoors, so what? At least we prove May and Brendan aren't fatsos who couldn't go more than half a mile in three hours. Yeah, they broke it in the fourth Generation by letting them run indoors. And Red and eh... Green's running style was babyish compared to the cool jog which Brendan has. |
It was a very convenient addition to the game, as it allowed me to get through caves and certain buildings quicker.
|
I loved the Running Shoes, they made my traveling experience much better. Even though we may be unable to use them in long grass and inside buildings back in 3rd Gen, they did at least allow that from 4th Gen and on.
Tbh I always use either the Running Shoes or the bicycle when I need to get around on land. |
I think it is a great feature in Gen 3. I dont think it is bad to hold B when you want to run..
|
The running shoes was one of the best additions to the game, even if indoor running didn't show up until the 4th gen. It made going to and from places less of a chore, especially when you compare it to the walking speeds of the previous gens, before you get the bike. I loved that HG/SS finally gave us the option to run without holding B (even though I still did through habit), but still can't understand why they didn't add it in B/W. Hopefully we'll see that return with the release of X and Y.

I think Running shoes is great, that I don't have to slow walking anymore, and I'm glad that this feature is kept and improved after its debut in RSE.
|
I love running, one of the best features they implemented in Gen III. They made it even better in gen IV when we could run indoors, and in HG/SS, we were able to toggle on and off the run option :)

Very good feature since its debut. I don't mind holding a B-button. Heart Gold and Soul Silver run feature is toggled, but should have stayed that way in Gen V.
|
I like the running shoes because it does make me hold the B button down. I feel I need to press a button at all times to enjoy playing. Lol. Pressing B + Up to capture a pokemon even though I know it won't make it 100%. Pressing A after an attack to "make it do more damage". Plus the precision. I like it way more than the bike and waaaaay more than walking.
|
They were by far my favorite addition to the game!
|
I can't believe we ever made it through the games without them lol
|
A very cool addition for sure.
|
There hasn't been a time where the running shoes haven't been useful, and even their debut -- Generation III -- isn't an exception. Yes, not being able to run in a few buildings is a slight pain, but that's almost completely inconsequential. I've never had an issue with always having to hold the B button, either; you get used to it after a short while (I actually found HGSS's always-on function quite annoying, but...) I found Generation III a bit slow, and I don't think I'd have been able to get through it without the running shoes.
|
It's a very good addition indeed and became in even greater in the 4th gen when you can run indoors! Woohoo!
|
Sydian said it so well. I really loved using Running Shoes, they ameliorated my traveling experience. When they allowed indoors running, I was soooo happy!
|
They were a nice addition but I don't use them that often. It would be cool if the music increased in tempo slightly while running
|
This feature was a lifesaver. The travel was so much faster and I preferred running over the bike usually, since the mach and acro bikes were too fast for me sometimes. Holding down B was never an issue either since I liked to have been able to stop running just by taking my finger off of the button.
|
Best invention ever! I played Gen I after joining in Gen IV and it was hard to not have them in Yellow.
|
SO USEFUL.
They were so important to me, definitely the best item/key item in Pokemon EVER. They helped me get to places so much faster, and were helpful until you got the bicycle. |
What a damn good addition.
To be honest I don't care about bikes anymore. Running shoes really saved my ass. |
Running Shoes! I always use them. Every Single Time without fail. They help me get around so much quicker than just plain old walking and helps to save the inconvenience of using my bike, which is a little too inaccurate for my taste. Thanks to the Running Shoes, I can now go places I've never been before! xD

running shoes is very very very needed in every game i have played :D
|
Although I've never played a game without running shoes (except Pokémon Ranger, where they walk faster anyway) I would hate it if they weren't there. Although I mainly just walk at normal pace while I'm progressing through the game, they make dashing about between rematches and berry plots so much easier, especially if you're stuck with the Acro Bike or just don't want to listen to the bike music (Although bike music isn't bad, it gets irritating when you have to sacrifice route music in order to travel fast).
And not Gen III, but I loved how Hg/Ss gave you the perma-run button. Taking it away was the only way Black / White could be seen as a step back from previous gens, rather than building on them (I won't say improving because you can argue some things weren't any better e.g. Sturdy) |
i agree this was an ideal feature. I also think the FireRed/LeafGreen should have stayed without it as a sort of nostalgic piece. At the same time though... i'm glad they just decided to have running shoes lol... I hate walking but honestly i don't remember it being a problem until it was an option. And i also think it makes us lazy gamers (you know who you are) not use bikes altogether.
|
To be honest, after the running shoes were implemented (and before, really) I never got into the bikes. I found the controls almost too tight and I couldn't be bothered running into a wall 2 or 3 times before I finally hit the door. The running shoes are a perfect medium, plus there's no annoying music change. (:
|
I think the shoes were the most useful addition GF added to the games, it's kinda irritating though that I only take them after I go battle May/Brock which would waste some time, I should receive them first thing in the game, maybe right after I get my starter! Also they should have been usable indoors, good thing hacks here made that possible ;)
It's kinda funny how I keep holding the B button while replaying through G/S/C nowadays then just stop every minute & feel awkward {XD} however I must admit the player moved a bit faster in 2nd gen games than it did in 3rd gen games, besides 2nd gen games didn't have that much room to run in anyway :P I sometimes prefer the shoes to the bike. |
Actually, that's shame that since Running lock on touch screen appeared in HG/SS, it didn't appear in V gen.
