Well that wasn't a match for the faint hearted. It reminded me of the match against Newcastle from many years ago.

What a beautiful weekend of football.

My fellow Liverpool fan. <3 Liverpool 4-3 Newcastle was the first game I ever remember watching with my grandfather and it's prolly the one that set me on the path of being a Liverpool fan!

Would like to give my warmest thanks to Norwich for depriving Tottenham of points, because now that gives us a beautiful 6 point safety net over 11 games.

Southampton next, and although they got the better of us at home, I feel we'll have better odds against them away... their stunning start to the season has kinda lost its luster now.

Eruption February 23rd, 2014 11:40 AM

That Liverpool game should make Match Of The Day an exciting watch later on.

What an excellent result for Norwich too, which also served to confirm my doubt about Spurs reaching the top four.

Aeroblast February 23rd, 2014 3:53 PM

FC Bayern practically won the bundesliga today with another win. They're a joy to watch.

Unbelieveable Tekkers. :P

I'm glad the Man United game is on ITV tomorrow, need some football to break the monotony of college work.

Brb just collecting my shot from row z!! haha!

Eruption February 25th, 2014 8:57 AM

Well as long as he could a little self deprecating humour out of it, I guess it's alright for him.

I'm going for 0-0 for tonight's Man Utd game, because the slip up looks inevitable. They'll then sneak the second leg.

£ February 25th, 2014 10:18 AM

Gonna say 2-1 to United with RVP and Rooney getting one apiece. Wish it wouldn't be so but despite the horror season they've had so far, I can't see them throwing this one away!

Eruption February 25th, 2014 12:58 PM

And yet they are throwing it away... I guess it's a lesson never to expect United to actually live up to their potential.

Great goal from Campbell.

£ February 25th, 2014 1:00 PM

Christ all that hype about them REALLY GOING FOR THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE and yet they're 2-0 down what is this I don't even.

I'm absolutely revelling in this though.

Weeaboo Name February 25th, 2014 1:19 PM

Told you Moyes would win the CL.

Eruption February 25th, 2014 1:42 PM

They didn't even seem interested in chasing the game until the last five minutes when, unsuprisingly, they didn't have the quality to create a chance anyway.

So poor, Moyes must be the luckiest manager of all time to still be in a job.

Weeaboo Name February 25th, 2014 2:04 PM

A case of players not playing for their manager? I mean whatever Manchester United side gets put out it should be competitive.

Eruption February 25th, 2014 3:37 PM

I think it's got to the point now were even if it doesn't seem to be Moyes' fault you have to get rid of him just to spark a reaction from the players.

But to a large extent it seems like Moyes' fault anyway so it's well overdue for him to leave.

£ February 25th, 2014 3:41 PM

Dat 6 year contract that puts him as one of the highest paid managers.

It's a small price to pay for a reaction but my word, it could even serve to destabilise United further. And the fact they're paying Wayne Rooney so much is hilarious; he's good but he's not worth that much. He's not the best player in the world after all!

Correction: Olympiakos are the easy draw for the CL Quarterfinals. My bad.

That was a laughable piece of nothingness from Moyester United.

£ February 25th, 2014 3:59 PM

Every match I tell myself that "okay, surely they'll get back to their usual antics now, the enjoyment's going to end now."

I'm still going to keep telling myself that because it makes the horrific results for United twice as fun. Am I a bad person? Yes. Yes I am. But I guess this is probably how United fans felt in 1991... not that Liverpool nosedived THIS quickly.

Weeaboo Name February 25th, 2014 4:05 PM

Signing a player of equal quality to Rooney and paying his wages for 5 years would cost more than just renewing Rooney's contract, so I honestly think it was a pretty good deal.

Don't think Moyes will go any time soon. I hope he's at least given the summer to totally rebuild and then another season to really give that squad time to gel.

Aeroblast February 25th, 2014 4:24 PM

If you watched couple of Manchester united games, it's clear to see why they're struggling.

Take a successful club like FC Bayern for example. They have a player like Lahm and Schweinsteiger who can pass the ball to several players, and those players can pass back to other players near them:

http://soccerisma.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Bayern-Munich-Triangles.png

This allows for plenty of options to easily pass the ball around your opponent. Take another in-form team like Liverpool, for example, they do this too:

http://soccerisma.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/Liverpool-Triangles.jpg

In this image Coutinho is at the center to pass the ball around 7 different players. More options = less predictability = more creativity.

Now take Manchester United, these are all taken from Manchester United vs Fulham, another game where they played poorly for majority of the game:

http://livelifeunited.com/winningeleven9798/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/3-1024x585.png

http://livelifeunited.com/winningeleven9798/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/4-1024x581.png

Notice the empty spaces. Only option? Pass the ball to the sides and cross hoping for one to hit the head of a United player. This stifles their creativity. This is also exacerbated (or perhaps caused) by the fact that all the players are in very similar positions (Especially take a closer look at how close Rooney and Van Persie are to each other). They could get the Kroos's and Vidal's of this world, but as long as they play like this, they will continue to get poor results.

Read more about this here, it's where I got the images from: http://livelifeunited.com/illustration-moyes-tactics-stone-age/

Wow. I haven't seen anything more damning for a coach in a long time (since Vanderlei Luxemburgo's infamous "magical square", which became something of a meme in Spain after sinking Real Madrid into the double-digit positions before he was fired). That's just terrible. And that sums up perfectly why Moyester United have become quite the criss-cross team this year (and not getting particularly much out of those either).

Quite remarkable what a poor setup can do.

Banz February 25th, 2014 6:21 PM

Lol.. this is hilarious. I shouldn't be laughing at someone else's misfortune, but I can't help it.

The Man Utd picture reminds me of village football, where half the players stand near the goal hoping to somehow get the ball from their team mates.

I agree, while obviously the wage does appear high, the move was only logical for United. I think a lot of people have underrated Rooney through this season, he still has 10 goals and 9 assists in 22 PL games from his deeper role and his work rate has probably prevented many more opportunities for the opposition to score. I think it says a lot about him as a professional that despite being unhappy with his situation at the club, he is still willing to work harder for it than any other player. As far as I'm concerned, I think only Luis Suarez eclipses him in terms of ability in the Premiership now.

That's some pretty damning evidence and it does pretty much tell the story of a lot of recent Man United games. It's surprising as well because they have so many players who can interchange, you'd think they'd all manage to find space near the man in possession.

Reading about it, that seems like the typical Brazilian set up. I read an interview from the time and he just immediately disregards wingers as having any importance, how does someone like this get employed by Real Madrid?
