So nearly put a Sanchez 3-1 scorecast before the game, kicking myself now.

Good effort Aussies, but it can only get worse from here on in unfortunately.

Hikamaru June 13th, 2014 3:55 PM

I think I have lost faith in the Australians now, guess I might lean my support towards the Netherlands from here on following their amazing thrashing of Spain. Australia's performance in the loss to Chile was so abysmal.

Actually I'm honestly positively impressed by their performance.

I wasn't, the only standout was Cahill. As soon as Chile got their first two goals in a short period of time I knew Australia were going to be doomed for the whole match.

And yet, with just that little, they were this close from actually coming back. I guess you are so disappointed because you expected more and I'm so impressed because I was expecting a 5-0 trashing XD

At least I know Chile's potential to be a good contender now so I'll see how well they'll do in their remaining matches. My real attention will be on the Dutch.

Gabri June 13th, 2014 4:17 PM

The Aussies fought well there. Chile is a nice team and will be a challenge for both the Dutch and the Spaniards.

England vs Italy tomorrow, looking forward to it. England brought a lot of youngsters and I want to see how they will do in such a competition. But Andrea Pirlo makes me root for Italy.

(Too bad Zlatan is not in the World Cup, but it was either us or him.)

The Germans scare me the most. Even with today's steamroller performance, I'd rather face the Netherlands a million times over Germany.
We haven't done anything good against them for a long time and they have only been getting stronger in the last few years. As for the Dutch, we have beat them in our last matches and their defense doesn't seem half as good as Germany's to me.

Also, I believe that the surprise this year will be Belgium. They have a really nice squad and will certainly do well, and I will have my attention on them.

Okay. So Australia is still most likely going to be unceremoniously dumped off in the group stages but this has been truly remarkable.

This sums it up well imo.

C'mon, Hikamaru, we were not bad, let alone abysmal. Outclassed, yes, but we were up against Chile. Reading back it seems you thought they were out best chance for points, but I have to disagree, their form prior to the match was great and really, every single team in this group are expected to beat us and beat us comfortably. Even our 2006 squad - the golden generation - would have struggled to get a point from this group.

Consider then a spat of injuries (Kruse, Rogic, Kennady), retirements, and a rather new coach (because ours was truly poor, kinda lucky we qualified tbh with him!) and a very young team... to not be embarrassed is really a good result for us, realistically speaking.

While the end scoreline suggests that it was a comfortable win, it was a much closer match and we gave them a run for their money. Their third goal at the end was rather like Brazil's against Croatia - a late finisher helped by us pushing forward trying to find the equaliser, that's always a risk

Poor start with the defense - personally not much we could do with the first, the second though our defense was shellshocked and both of our CBs went to their left leaving that player open. After that they did a better job - excellent scrambling by Wilkinson with that goalline clearance. We put pressure on them, had some nice crosses, and Cahill did what he does best. Our CDMs did decently as well. Oar was kinda disappointing for me, and Leckie was hot and cold. Pity about Franjic, I doubt he'll play in the next game and we only have the one other true RB player now.

Anyways, I expected a loss, and disappointed we did, and the first part of the game was bad. But we got back into it, and I'd say we can hold our head high with how we played overall. Onto the next match, and more so the future of the team, it looks better than it did a year ago.

Eruption June 14th, 2014 5:03 AM

Oar was terrible, Leckie seems like one of those players who have all the speed and dribbling ability he needs but no end product or decision making. Players like that are annoying to watch sometimes. I think the young generation is a bit of a worry with bresciano and cahill being the best players by far last night. But that's all based off one game so maybe I'm dooming them too soon.

Four games before I sleep again (since ivory coast play Japan at 2am so I can't really say today), it should be fun.

I think you are dooming a bit too soon. =p Rather new backline for us that mostly settled after the beginning, and we had a few injuries (one of the CBs we had injured is up and coming and probably could/would have started here, but had of all things an injury due to a sprinkler on the pitch... =/), and Davidson did very well imo as well with limited experience.

I'd agree with you on Leckie as well, needs to think more (although he had some neat runs and a great cross for our disallowed goal). Kruse probably would have started if fit though, and Rogic has potential but given his run this last year... hmm, he needs to stop being injured so much, he's a worry with that. Two CDMs have some years in them as well, one which is our captain, and I think we're golden with our goalkeeper too. I think we need some more talent up front most of all in terms of future, Cahill won't be around forever.

Going to bed before the first match today at 2am here (sigh), but will wake up for at least the two latter matches. Always replays as well.

Weeaboo Name June 14th, 2014 5:33 AM

I expect my will to stay up for the Ivory Coast vs Japan game will rely heavily on the England result. Well, I'll probably watch it whatever happens but I'd enjoy it a lot more if we haven't been beaten.

Leckie has a very good goal and assist return rate in the German second division, perhaps he was just a bit nervous. Well, nerves and the fact he was playing at a much higher level.

Turns out the McCormack bid was from Derby, not Norwich. Could still see us being involved with this one though.

Eruption June 14th, 2014 8:19 AM

Some of the sky reporters were saying Fulham were in for mccormack, I wouldn't be surprised if Norwich did bid eventually. Maybe send becchio back in part exchange.

Horrible goal to concede there.

Weeaboo Name June 14th, 2014 8:33 AM

Good celebration though.

That could certainly happen as Becchio doesn't seem to be in Adams' plans. Bit of a shame hes career with us never took off, he wouldn't have done worse than our first team forwards last season I'm sure.

Wonder where Samaras will end up, not in a bad shop window here.

Eruption June 14th, 2014 8:43 AM

I could see Samaras going for a big payday at somewhere like QPR.

Wow. We thought the appointment of Neil Adams was underwhelming.

Dreg June 14th, 2014 11:03 AM

Well, Greece were poor this afternoon. Colombia 3-0 Greece, but Greece were unlucky not to get that header goal.

Eruption June 14th, 2014 11:51 AM

I had similar thoughts about that wba appointment. To be fair though even though Sherwood would've seemed exciting, there'd be little guarantee he would be any better.

Uruguay haven't been great so far, fairly promising for us.

Dreg June 14th, 2014 12:00 PM

Well, only 1 goal for Uruguay against Costa Rica. And it was from a penalty.

EDIT: A goal for Costa Rica!!!

2nd EDIT: COSTA RICA LEADING 2-1!!! YES!!!

3rd EDIT: THIS IS A BIG UPSET! COSTA RICA LEADING 3-1!!!

Holy ♥♥♥♥, is this real life?

Ryoutarou June 14th, 2014 12:48 PM

Things really got away from Uruguay pretty fast there. I like some of the saves I'm seeing from Navas and Campbell's been making good decisions out there.

Aeroblast June 14th, 2014 12:50 PM

Uruguay 1-3 Costa Rica. Spain 1-5 Netherlands.

Already a better world cup than the 2010 edition.

Ryoutarou June 14th, 2014 12:54 PM

Ouch! Pereira makes a silly mistake and gets himself and his team into some big trouble.

Dreg June 14th, 2014 12:56 PM

What a game this was. I really love seeing the underdog beat the better team.
