How long did it take for a full team?
For my 100th post, I thought I go back to where I began, a book end if you will and go back to FireRed and LeafGreen. When I was kid, I only used my Bulbasaur and somehow managed to beat the eight gym leaders before losing to my rival. So I wanted to ask, how long in the game did it take for you to assemble a full team? Also, did you get a full team and swap out members after doing so?
Usually after 4th-5th gym I managed to have a stable, full team. I rarely swapped one or two Pokemon afterwards.
I have my team by the fifth gym leader battle.
I've played through each game once, LeafGreen being the first game I ever finished. In that one, I had a team right away but I didn't understand typing so my team was really awful and I mostly relied on my Blastoise and the legendaries I had caught to beat the Elite Four. To this day I don't have a legit team in that game. But in FireRed I had a very controlled team that I had planned from the beginning and traded all my pokemon from LeafGreen to start off with as babies. I had five Pokemon on my team through all the gyms, but then I caught a Scyther in the Safari Zone to add to my team and beat the E4 with it. Usually though, I try to add a pokemon to my team at every gym or every two gyms until I get to the last one and have a full team of six. FRLG were special cases for me.
I never have a set place that I have a full team, but I don't like to have them all too quickly. I prefer having them all after maybe...the 6th or 7th badge. But it can happen sooner, and indeed it has happened sooner.
I always had battles with my friend in Leaf Green so I usually took the strongest pokemon I could get (generally legendaries). I can't remember much of Leaf Green though.
I believe I had a team of Blastoise, being my main pokemon because my friend had a charizard but also a venusaur which I gave him, with a Groudon to counter his venusaur. Also had a Raikou which I managed to catch after like a month. If I remember correctly this was my exact team: -Blastoise -Kyogre -Rayquaza -Groudon -Raikou -Tyrannitar Yeah... |
I rarely plan my team out in advance, so it usually takes me until between the fifth and sixth Gyms to get a full party of Pokemon. At that point, I'll usually rotate 8 or so Pokemon through my six slots right until I've beaten the Elite Four, since I can rarely pick favorites on my team.
I know that once I did manage to have my team full by the time I got to Erika (the fourth Gym), but most of them didn't last on my team for the entirety of the game. |
In FRLG I rarely had or do have a team planned out so it was whatever I liked alot. In my last playthrough, I didn't have my final team around getting the 7th or 8th badge so clearly I don't really get full team for a while.
I plan my team before hand, and I'll have the last member when I can access it in the game. But I'll always have my team before the Elite 4.
Before the second gym, Jigglypuff, Mankey, Starter, Pidgey, Caterpie, Zubat.
I have my team before first Gym.
I usually try to plan ahead and have a general idea of what pokemons I'd like to use. In the end i have a list of about 8-10 pokemon that i'd like to have in my team, and i normally have a full/stable team around the 6th badge, unless i really want to have a pokemon that can only be caught later on in the game

I used to plan out teams before I started playing. I used to stick to my comfort zone mixed teams that would counter the Rival's team. But since I started doing challenges, I tend to simply build up teams as I go.
I didn't have my sixth Pokemon, Jynx, until I beat the last gym leader. But I had my first 5 by the 5th gym I think.
I have a team of 6 by the 6th caught pokemon. I keep switching them out as I catch better pokemon and i don't really plan out my team unless i'm doing a challenge. Generally my pokemon are stable by the 3rd gym. Except I have a hard time in gen 5 with doing it this way... I tend to have to plan somewhat in gen 5.
Depends on what I want.
Usually what I want is different each time. Training for EVs you want and EXP is super easy with the Versus Seeker, so I don't mind waiting until I get to the Safari Zone or late Routes for my full team. Once I fished for the rare Grimer in Celadon's pond instead of waiting until reaching Cinnabar to finish a team, which takes a lot of patience. Between Leaf Green and Fire Red, there are still some Pokémon I haven't used - Golduck, Vileplume, Chansey, Pinsir, Scyther, Dugtrio - to name a few, but as a rule, I avoid Pokémon that gained evolutions in Gen IV or trade evolutions. Sometimes I don't even go for the full team if I want a quick playthrough to see what Pokémon I like. Makes distributing Rare Candies for the end much more of a boon. |
I usually have a stable team assembled by the 4th or 5th gym, but I never plan teams out, so it varies.
I find the games are a lot more fun when you just make a team on a whim because you found the next best member while you were training. It's fun seeing your team come together from scratch. |
First I get Squirtle, then I catch a Pidgey at Route 1. Catch a Pikachu in Viridian Forest, Catch a Geodude at Mt. Moon, Catch a Abra and Bellsprout/Oddish north of Cerulean City.
I have my entire team before my second badge. |
First time through was pretty typical...started with Bulbasaur, finished evolving Dragonite. So the longest it's ever taken me is to get all 6 members capturing Dratini in Fuchsia City.
I never swap in/out team members in LeafGreen, at least until after becoming Champion as the level curves too steep to avoid tedious amounts of grinding (that's not counting making sure Dratini is a Dragonair before heading out for Seafoam Islands, otherwise it just gets killed). Well, actually its not entirely true. When I did a run using the team of Red out of PokéSpe I swapped Eevee out later on as it was too weak and I had 7 members. Also because he didn't use it in the Pokémon League :) |
Usually by the time I go to the Sevi Islands for the first time I'll have my whole team. As late as I can remember going without a full team is right before the e4 when i caught and used an Articuno.
The Kanto starters were a bit underpowered. The legendary birds, too. And they were abused. Most people underestimated the potential of Pokemon like Kingler.
I never had a full team of six, but nevertheless, it was a full team. Kingler, Alakazam, Dragonite, Espeon. This amazing clutch team was never defeated. |
I generally have a full team assembled by the time I beat Koga.
It depends on the type of game I'm playing. If it's Platinum, just after I get the Rio-Egg. If it's Ruby, then I have to wait until finishing the last gym in order to get meself a Salamence.
That way, in FR/LG, I suppose as soon as Cinnabar I get myself the Dewgong, so yes again until the 7th gym. It's not so bad either, I content myself with my starter until the third gym or so. In fact, I guess that the Dewgong is gotten much later than my other Pokémon, because my team usually has a Pidgeot, Venusaur, Flareon/Arcanine, Golem and Dragonite/Alakazam already. |
I never managed to get past the fifth Gym or so when I had access to my FireRed game, but I am quite sure that I had a full team prior to that (usually, my team is quickly assembled out of early-game Pokemon whom I feel have some sort of potential). Knowing me, I probably managed to assemble a full team by the time I reached Erika.
I'll go with the consensus and say between getting my 6th and 7th Badge (usually because I get Lapras last at Silph Co).
The first time I played though Fire Red, I pretty much replicated my Championship Team from the original Red: Charizard, Raichu, Lapras, Dragonite, Alakazam, Machamp. (I originally had a Pidgeot instead of a Dragonite, but this was the only change I made) Subsequent restarts and replays of both this Fire Red and an extra copy of Leaf Green that I got from my friend, I planned out my teams, each time using a different team. |
I'm currently doing a playthrough of FireRed. I have 6/8 badges and my team is Charizard L46, Vaporeon L46, Dugtrio L46, Raichu L46, and Dratini L26. I'm still training the Dratini, but I don't know which Pokemon I should choose for my sixth member. Suggestions would be helpful and appreciated!
I rarely beat the game with a "Full Team" I use 5 for most of the game... and sometimes it takes me upwards of Pokemon Mansion to get even the 5th pokemon...
playing with less than a full deck removes the need for time consuming grinding, because your exp from fighting trainers is spread out over fewer allies. also because I am picking and choosing my specific team, I never replace anyone... the 6th slot might be filled with a Meowth pining for PPups using his PickUp ability. but he is removed before entering the E4... I recently started a Nuzlocke challange and even without my desired team I still only have 5 pokemon and am ready to face the E4 |
it usually takes me 12 hours and 29 minutes to get a full team.
I never get full Pokémon teams until after the final gym. Usually I only use about 3-4 Pokémon while going through the walkthrough, and then go back to certain places to find Pokémon that I want/need after getting the final gym badge.
I'm actually playing LeafGreen right now and I just beat Misty with 4/6 of my full team. I only need to catch Vulpix and get the Eevee in Celadon and then I'll have them all! |
I didn't really get a full team until I got the 6th or 7th gym. I just leveled them all up and chose a balance of attack and speed.
Pretty far just before the Elite Four as far as I remembered because there was no 6th worthy poke before that time which could fill up my team...
usually I assemble my team only before victory road. Till then keep changing my party.
I don't like having a large team early in the game so I generally try to spread the members out a bit. I normally have a full team around the 6th or 7th gym, although I'll occasionally catch my 6th in Victory Road.
I caught every Pokemon I saw that didn't have a Pokeball on the battlescreen, unless of course it was a evolution, so all of these pokemon were EXP shared and short run through high level wild grass and then to PC after evolve.
By the time I had a full actual team that I meant to use as my team was after the E4. Charizard Pigeot Raichu Gyaridos Persian ----------------Pre E4 Houndoom ----------------after E4 |
When i was small. I also train one Pokemon only. That Pokemon was my starter Pokemon, Mudkip. I dont know how did i mange to beat the Elite 4 and Champion too, LoL! That strange!
Edited: Did not see the prefix.. So this is for FR/LG only? If so, it take me 10 hour or so to get my team. My team only have 3 Pokemon. LoL! Find it hard to rise 6 Pokemon.. |
My starter was squirtle, and I quickly caught a pidgey. I got a Pikachu in Viridian forest. Then I caught a Nidoran and a Mankey after Pewter city. I finished my team off by getting a dratini in the celadon game corner.
My final team was: Blastoise Pidgeot Raichu Nidoking Primape Dragonite |
Just before the E4 my team was full, containing:
Blastoise Pidgeot Nidoking Arcanine Rhydon Magneton |
Tbh, I don't think I really ever had a full team because I was constantly boxing and changing Pokemon up until the Elite Four.
3-5 badges It depends if i want to try something new or go with my classic team members
This Question..Well Since Im Really Choosy and Do not easily Like All pokemon So At the start I get My starter To Evolve quickly Then Most probably catch A pidgey and Mankey and A pikachu The pikachu goes after lets say the 2nd gym And I Release Mankey Which Is Now Primape after a while Pidgeot Stays And I really like Badass Pokemon So I usually havve a Team of 5 or 4 And I never really Keep 6
That is hard to understand..*Punctuation Marks* |
I Complete My Team After Beat Seventh Gym
I generally have a full team by the third gym, at the very most. But I change it from there.
That being said, I can have a full team before I get Brock. |
It took me quite a long time to get a full Pokémon team. I had to wait until I was finally able to beat the Pokémon league. When I defeated the league and was done with the main story, I shifted my focus to building a proper team for myself. My team consisted of Blastoise, Raichu, Ninetales, Dragonite, Breloom, and Metagross. I was able to beat many of my friends with this team, because it had a variety of types and the Pokémon were able to work with each other very nicely. ^^
I gained my 4th and last team member in Fuchsia City, a Poliwag. I chose Charmander as the starter, caught Pikachu in Viridian Forest and Diglett in Diglett's Cave.
I never use a full team of six, the highest I've gone is five (Platinum). So yeah, after obtaining my 6th gym badge, I caught my final member. |
I normally have a full team by the 5th gym leader and will maybe swap stuff around if I catch anything good in the Safari Zone.
Usually before the 5th gym, but if i don't have water type, I go for a spheal as it can learn all water HM's and icebeam :)
I don't think I would ever have one... I usually used
Starter Mr. Mime Jynx Arcanine Marowak and now I can't think of the rest |
I got six pokemon before the eight gym.:D
My Team:Venusaur,Arcanine,Articuno,Dragonite,Kadabra and Marowak. |
In LG, I never made a true team. I just caught and trained every Pokémon, and rotated them in and out so that almost every Pokémon I owned was at the same level.
In most games where I do make a team, I don't finalize my team until after I beat the Elite Four. I find it easier to stick with 3-5 Pokémon so that I have enough room for HM slaves, Pokémon I want to train to complete my Pokedex, etc. When I do make a team to use in-game, though, I generally do it with Pokémon caught by the second badge or so, and then often add a late-game Pokémon when I get to that point. |
I'm actually notorious for changing my team around at the last minute. Depending on the region and what's available in that region, I try to have the team I want to take to the Elite four completed no later than the 7th-8th Gym. When I played through Black, though, I decided to pick up a Timid Deino to use that was roughly 30 levels behind the rest of my team, which gave me a reason to grind and train some more.
Doesn't take that long for me. I usually have my team planned out ahead of time, and even if I haven't already, I have this list of Pokemon in mind sorted into typings that get considered into my team if I come across them. Once I make my team, it is more or less final. The only exception is when I find another Pokemon that has better battle potential than one of the ones I already have in my team, for example Ampharos -> Eelektross in B/W2. If a Pokemon I'm searching for is not available earlier on in the game, I will save a spot for it until I finally encounter it.
I usually get a full team by the time I get 6th badge, though I might save that last slot for Zapdos after I get access to Surf.
It varies. On my runthrough using PokéSpe Red's team, until Cinnabar Island. On my last runthrough (paused due to Uni), I had 6 pokémon before challenging Misty.
I have my full team around the 6th gym. Really depends on the team, because I tend to box a lot of them and then change them when I'm almost near the league. Sometimes I know what team I'll be going to use from the start, but stat wise, I end up switching between the ones I have until I form a better team, with overall types and attacks.
First time I played all the games I basically solo'd with my starter because I was too lazy to raise a full team.
I'd say when I began actually structuring full teams, around the 4th gym I had my team that I'd use until the E4. |
I would always raise a full team before the second gym. Then when I found some Pokemon I like I would swap almost everyone from my team out except for my starter! ;D Right now I'm at the Elite Four and I just now switched out one of my Pokemon from my team.
Well my first team took me 6 badges to make because i had to mess around with my team...
And my second run took me 4 badges to make because i was trying somthing new. |
Somewhere in Emerald. My mind is a little fuzzy, but yeah around maybe the 4th badge
The amount of time it takes me to make a full team varies on what style of training I'm using for that run. In one style, I usually wait till around the Pokemon league to catch a 5th and 6th Pokemon for the team because by then I can usually catch a strong enough Pokemon somewhere in the wild.
In LeafGreen, my team is not settled until I have captured Articuno with my lovely master ball, so I do complete all 8 gyms with five or less Pokemon in my party.
I would say not long before the first gym. If I ever needed to make changes to the team as I progress, I would.
I guess I have two teams, one I use to defeat the gym's like mankey whose low kick stomps Brock's Onix, and Pikachu for Misty, but my FR/LG competition team which will be very similar to my competition team from Yellow. It takes time to acquire and raise pokemon like Dragonite & Tyranitar in addition to breeding a Snorlax with Curse and a Chansey with Heal Bell, about the Chansey if anyone else is playing FR/LG on VBA has one for trade I'll trade what I can in return, thanks.
I get My Full team Before the Elite Four and I remember my team here's the list:
- Venusaur (Starter) - Blastoise (Trade) - Charizard (Trade) - Mewtwo (Event) - Ho-oh (Cheat) - Vaporeon (the Free Eevee then I used Water Stone) |
It varies. Usually, I first plan my team before I start to play. So since I typically have a different team each time I play, it changes from when I have my full team.
I get a full party after the 7th-8th badge.
I usually have a full team by the time I reach Celadon. I plan my teams ahead, so I know what to get, and when to get it. Sometimes, though, when a Pokemon underperforms, I replace it when I find a good replacement. My last play of FireRed ended up with Golem, Aerodactyl, Exeggutor, Dragonair, Scyther, and Arcanine.
Probably after my 3rd or 4th gym.
Probably when I get the 5th or 6th gym leader.
I am very picky when it comes to my current gen team. |
I didn't complete my team in FR last time I played until I was at the 7th gym. I decided to fish for a Shellder and make it my final addition.
In Red I always started with bulbasaur. When I got my pokeballs I caught a pidgey and as soon as i could also a geodude then i changed nothing at my team until i finished the game.
In other games I get my full team before the 5th gym. |
Always start with the fire type Charmander
Went to route 1 and immediately caught Pidgey I had to gameboys and 2 pokemon fr so i sent myself Squirtle and Bulbasaur Went to Viridian Forest and caught Pikachu Got Pokeflute and swapped Pigeot out for Snorlax Swapped Venusaur out for Gengar My team was complete when I got Lapras from Silph Co. |
Right till the elite four.
I caught my Growlithe, and trained and trained im to a Arcanine before the elite four. Loved what i got for the wait ^^ |
