When I make them, I'm more like: lol CROP uh-oh forgot how to icon (´⊙ω⊙`)!! |
I rarely use selective-coloring in icons. Instead, I would just make a new layer, fill it with a certain color, give it some mode (overlay, soft, etc.), and decrease its opacity to about 5 to 8 percent, I'd keep repeating this process until I'm actually satisfied. xD" From time to time, I would also use textures. It's hard to fit them into an icon, though.
|
No, what you said is cute, Jo. Because that's a joke if I ever saw one. :p
also @ashley - I actually think using a mixture of both would end up in a great icon. Using both your method and selective coloring, I mean. But tbh, I've used that idea a few times and it is very much a random process and involves a lot of trial and error. Even moreso than selective coloring does. So I'm not exactly big on using solely that method. Yeah, using it alongside gradient maps, SC etc is okaay sometimes for me. :p and I use textures when I'm not feeling lazy haha |
Selective coloring is literally the holy grail of my photoshop.
Except not. But sort of. LOL I don't know, I've always been terrible with colors, so I always end up using a ton of gradient maps, selective coloring layers, and curves/levels on all of my works-- whether it be tags, icons, or drawings. Like Dero said, it allows so much more control over it, and makes it a lot more unique in my opinion because I think just spreading colors over a whole image makes it much harder to express what you want in an icon to stand out. Everything in your image just ends up being altered in too similar a fashion and in the end it won't look much different from the original.... Also, this discussion is actually one reason why I like, never make icons... /beardstroke I have this problem where I can't crop an image and color adjust it and feel right about posting it up like I actually did something worth a damn to it LOL-- so whenever I make icons I always make sure to do something that makes it recognizably different from the original stock, but-- that's not always easy in a 100x100 space, so I just.... Don't make icons! :D /useless contributions 2014 |
This post is so true omg. Which is why, if you noticed in my signatures in the past 6 months or so, I almost never credit myself as 'I made the icon' in my signatures. It is usually 'color manip by me' along with 'art credit to ...'. If I haven't done much apart from altering the colors, it just doesn't feel okay to call it 'my work'.
That said, I do make them and post them in my thread so I guess I am indirectly contradicting myself idk haha. :p But yeah, I am very much in agreement with your sentimet, Loki. Although there are some exceptions to this. For example, a pic that is mostly monotonous with verrrrrrrrry faint shades of color - so faint that eye isn't able to differentiate between colors and stuff - and I manage to turn it into a super colorful icon using like 20 billion selective color layers. Those icons I do feel that, yeah, I actually did something. An example would be genesis's request in my recent shop. http://www.pokecommunity.com/showpost.php?p=8118242&postcount=13 Found it. :p |
I love just focusing on color manipulation in icons, my tools being selective coloring, gradient maps, color balance, curves, levels, a little bit of anything over the years. Sometimes I erase certain parts so the selective coloring only applies to a specific area. It all makes a huge difference when you compare it to the original art, like above.
I'm too lazy to find textures and brushes though so I often avoid implementing them in an icon. Banners take like an hour of focus for me, and I'm distracted easily. |
Quote:
Anyway, yeah, working on a new batch of fairy icons right now. n_n; Wanted to pop in and agree unconditionally like always lol. |
Well, like Gav says, when it comes to icons simplicity is the key. :p
But proper usage of textures can make for some beautiful icons. They don't always work with every stock but correct utilization can end up in an icon that makes me go all whoooooooaaaaa. Most of these kinds of icons are done by people at LJ. I've seen some beautiful ♥♥♥♥ there. *-* |
As someone who roleplays on DW (Dreamwidth. before it was LJ) and makes icons for roleplaying simplicity is the key! After all while this doesn't say for the stock icons (which are still gorgeous because they use the same techniques that use on other icons) we use the icons for the expressions and actions. Anything fancy usually takes away from that and thus take away from the experience of roleplaying. And so in turn aren't used.
That said a lot of people who make icons actually don't use Livejournal anymore! A lot of 'em use Dreamwidth now so maybe check around that site for icons next time you're searching. :D I myself am actually making a lot of simple icons for roleplaying purposes and putting them on dreamwidth + a lot of my old icons that I have made for other people to use. I don't know if I can just link them to my gallery or anything though so they just stay there haha. |
Quote:
|
Well lately I've made like 50+ of the same character so I wasn't sure if I should put them all here haha. They're all under one entry on my dreamwidth journal though so if I can link them then perhaps I will sometimes! But yeah they're nothing more than an expression + me coloring the panel (since they're manga scans). The Sora icon theme that I had earlier are actually the icons I'm talking about haha. Just simple icons of the character's expression with some minor editing (such as coloring) to make the icon look better/brighter/etc but nothing further than that. Almost no text, fancy designs, etc.
But yeah! I do tend to be super picky with which icons I'm choosing! Because I have to have icons that expression a broad range of emotions and unless you get a paid account you only have up to 15 icons to work with. Which can be feasible but at the same time very limiting! |
I thought your sora icons were done really well. Then again, you've always been great at coloring, Tara. :D
http://imgur.com/gallery/I02PB I think this needs to shared and seen. |
There's one thing that bugs me with icons (and sigs to an extent) and that's the vast underuse of the plethora of Photography actions and effect tutorials out there that can be universally applied to a lot of what we do and use.
|
^I think one of the problems is that those effects are so seldom used well, that it's better not to use them at all. Baring a professional setting.
@Dero that ♥♥♥♥ is ridiculous. Although it's not that surprising that anime is based on real life locations. Still, the way it was captured is just.. ah so nice to look at. :) Do you know which anime they're from? |
It is from this anime, Jo. 5 centimeters per second. Actually it is a 1 hour long movie. A tale of lovers who drifted away over time due to physical distance between them. I thought it was a beautiful experience. ;p seemed very realistic too in that not every love story in real life is a success and the sweet ♥♥♥♥ everybody wants. The visuals alone make it worth watch an hour long movie lol |
ughhhh that art is like orgasm on the eyes i swear. Maybe I'll watch it sometime just cause it's just so gorgeous.
right now i'm going through a 'how do you icon' phase since it's been a while since i've iconed outside of making 'em for roleplay hhhh. |
There's actually a few anime with photo realistic backgrounds kicking around, although they are few in number.

Any artists out there able to help me with some banners? I'm a member of several clubs, but the banners are all different sizes and they look terrible together.
Was hoping someone could help me with cranking out a few banners of the same rectangle size http://www.pokecommunity.com/images/templates/smilies/cerulean/1.%20smile.gif After asking around (on some incorrect threads and PMs to moderators) I have found myself here. Even though I am only a member of 5 clubs, I was thinking it would be a good gesture to the whole community of club members if a set of banners were crafted for each club. For the size, I think the rectangle shape of my flying club banner would work best. |
Quote:
|
Quote:
As for club userbars chiefly made by A&D? Well.. that is a nice gesture, but whose going to make them? Making userbars and banners is usually a privilege reserved for someone in the club with the means, ability, and time to craft them. A&D as a whole doesn't have the manpower or resources to assert to a community wide project like that (although it's something I'm working towards!). That and, well, having a universal "one size fits all" type of userbar.. just so drastically reduces the creativity and personality that each club has. All of this said, if you know of any clubs that are in desperate need of userbars/banners and don't know where to go; send them here. I'll see how I can help. :) |
Does anybody know who was the original artist for this piece of art?

It's circulated the internet for several years, so it's hard to pinpoint the original artist. It was spread on sites like cheeseburger, 9gag, tumblr, imgur, weheartit, etc.

Huh. Looks like this thread went dry for a few days. Only one thing to do!
(takes up the revival wand) So I've recently gotten into graphic designing, and by a lot of lazy skuddling and messing around with this rusty Photoshop I have, I managed to make something work looking at. (if you think this isn't that good, you surely haven't seen the high-contrast previous ones XD) Personally I feel that I shouldn't have blended the render I used for Dante with the reddish... whatever. And I CAN'T CUSTOMIZE FONTS HELP. It's supposed to look CSS backround... ish. The space below the 'Dante' text (that crosses over the legs) should ideally be used to contain the links, text etc. for a hypothetical sig. http://i1162.photobucket.com/albums/q531/AntiSpriteTheft/Dante1_zps54bd3e1e.png Stock I | Stock II Dante from DMC! Long time fan of him, haha. Unfortunately, I don't really think this 'rebooted' look is as impressive as the classic one. I'm not claiming credit for anything here except for putting it together, jsyk. Some kind of direction on what to do next would be appreciated very much. ~beginner at gfxing signing out |
I personally love the size, haha. Anyway, your render looks sort of copy/pasted. To prevent that, you could have added some C4Ds above it, and maybe also some effects. Also, those texts are too far away from the focus; would have looked nicer if you had placed them a little closer. When you get the chance, you should definitely look at some signature tutorials. They really help, you know? n_n;; Been making graphics for years, but I still look at tuts every now and then. Each time I do, I always learn something new.

Why does this thread always get stale...?
(!)New question - When do you guys find the time to draw/prefer to draw? |

Hey it's hard to keep this thread going. :< Besides, I can't just sit here talking to myself it gets embarrassing after a while.
Lately, creativity has been hitting me in a lot of bizarre and interesting ways, and at odd moments. Right now, most of my creative energy has gone into pixel art and the majority of that has been either large, full pixel works or complementary components to already existing pixel pieces. I've learned just to not fight it and go along with whenever the mood strikes me. I find that if I try to set up an atmosphere conducive to art, I don't really do any more or better work anyway. I'm a go with the flow kind of girl~ |
sorry can i just like vent/be proud of myself for a second lol
i've been pretty neglectful of my shop this month but i just hadn't been feeling creative at all ;; kinda moped around, put off doing requests, was a terrible person, then slogged through some things that i'm sure i didn't do really great on. ;( but then i managed to get this and something in my brain just went "hey! remember! you can make pretty things!!" but today i was like "ahh i still feel stagnant" so i made myself a new signature and wow making myself a new theme always makes me really happy and energized about doing things idk it's nice. also makes me want to post bc im proud of it and like seeing it. and i re-discovered that cropping/resizing gifs isn't actually too hard when you have a good source image and that made me happy. :3 and then i went and did requests again! which is good! the thing is, i tend to put them off for various dumb reasons such as "i dont really like that request i'll deal with it later i guess" and "i dont feel like doing anything rn". and then i get all anxious about requests piling up because wow they do and im like "augh i gotta get all these done asap or people will be mad :(" and then i put it off even more because i'm too anxious to be creative and then it gets worse and that's a downward spiral isn't it. but i finally got it through my head that yes!! i can do a few things at a time and it's fine!! just a few at a time, nobody will be mad. unless i do them out of order lol. but like three to six things a day; i can do that :D and today i ended up with this avatar that im just really happy about aah. like, usually inspiration and drive come to me in a striking source image and that's what it takes to get me back into it. but the first image up there wasn't one i particularly even wanted to use- i had trouble with placement and what to do with it that was different than everything i had been doing before it. and it just wasn't going really well until i found a nice background to go with it. my signature was nicer; the piece struck me as being a lovely piece of art at first but i wasn't going to do a sig with it until i thought about pairing it with the background and then the css set up just came naturally really. and basically when i get down to it im proud of myself for shaking off a slump and getting back to it rather than quitting for half a year like i usually do (ノ´ヮ´)ノ*:・ celebrate with me lmao |

If you ever feel like you need a break, you can always ask me and I'll close the thread for a couple of weeks. :( That's the main reason I don't want people posting request threads, because I feel they can really compromise an artist's desire to create and puts unnecessary pressure on people where there doesn't need to be. There's nothing wrong with suspending the shop for a small time so you can catch your breath.
Anyway, I am happy that you were able to produce something you're proud of. It's always awesome when you can recapture something you felt like you lost. Just please remember that, if you ever hit those moments of exasperation, I'll be happy to take some of that weight off of your shoulders. <33 |

I have been having trouble with repetitive stocks lately- I've been pretty much forced to do a lot of vertical tags due to the unforgiving positioning of the subjects and I've been running out of ways to make them look good and different from each other. But I mean, I wouldn't have made any of them at all if I hadn't gotten those stocks? idk it's an interesting range of experience I'm getting. Quote:
Galleries are even more difficult for me tbh because everyone is so much better than I am haha. And I learn on my own time and with experimenting rather than trying to figure out what people with actual art knowledge are trying to explain to me. I take criticism fine, I just don't understand it well. -v-; And like. I don't want to show off what I'm doing. I just want to make things that I or other people will use. All the stuff I do has always been for themes. I don't make stuff for the sake of it as much. |
Quote:
I get that swapping themes a lot is natural. You're into something one day, and the next you've picked up something else. I think that's the main reason people become experienced with gfx XD. I guess with the whole requests pile ups you'd really improve in the fields which you thought you were bust. That's kind of lucky, if I do say so myself. If you're dedicated to making art for others, you've got yourself a good hobby haha. If you ever feel like opening a gallery, hope for some good critics (like Dero) to come by and give you awesome tips, since that can be invaluable. To get horizontal tags done, I feel you have to focus more on the landscape thing and have the stock really shortened. Or you can cut out the legs, like in my signature (horrible I know, but I was bored). Or try for many characters in a single piece XD |
LOL. It is your shop. You're the owner. You decide whose request you do. Whose you don't. Or when to do. People will be mad? They can't be. They need to know you're doing this just out of pure good will and are not asking anything in return for your time and effort spent on it.
Honestly, I've had two shops. When I felt like it, I did requests out of order. And both shops I asked got closed before I finished all the requests lol. Honestly, requests shouldn't be a burden. At all. You're doing this for fun and to improve yourself. Not to feel anxious. As soon as you start feeling the pressure, just give it a break. Ask jo to close it so the requests don't pile up. Do them as you feel comfortable - at your own pace. Then restart if you want. Also lel ^ thanks for what you said, hehe. I'm flattered. :p Too bad I want to get back to doing stuff and posting here and being active asap but that ain't happening till june. |
Hm... you're right, but I'd still avoid that sort of thing and finish all requests (or at least try) before closing down. It's okay to not take requests that don't range within your shop rules, but if you ignore ones that do and move to next, don't you think some might take it against you? :( Haven't had this sort of stuff happen to me personally, but then again, I've never actually opened up a proper shop here, haha.
|
I'd try my best to complete all, of course. But if things just do not work out (I ran out of time and had to leave for a place away from home with no pc access. I thought I'd do yours and Jo's at the end as they were kinda difficult but never got the chance), you can't really do anything about it. Or even in cases where your drive has been completely killed. I wouldn't force myself even if it means upsetting a person or two. I can't do it, okay. I do it for fun. If there's no fun and I'm merely forcing myself then my main motivation is dead. I can't continue in that case.
And I believe others shouldn't force themselves either. Politely apologise, maybe make up for the requests later (like I will to you with those 5 sets, haha), do something. Anything's fine. But don't force yourself. Don't be a complete jerk about it either tho. :v |
Random anime fan art approaching.
Spoiler:
I had a senpai to help me with the hair cos I couldn't draw hair. Had to constantly put it onto my computer screen for guidance as well. |
Quote:
Another thing you better watch out for is either using dark pencils or making sure that the scanner doesn't auto-adjust the brightness of the picture. It would be really hard to trace your lines if you don't. I do like the simple way you handled the expressions, though. A thanks received by an awkward surprise lol Hair tho. Hair and hands being the things that kill most artists. |
I always found that learning to draw hair early on and following it through can give a lot of detail and needed personality to an otherwise unremarkable piece.
example Hands? We don't talk about hands here. |
Hands, lol. Those are the things I'm having the most problem with right now. I've seen Signomi draw girls with crazy poses with those dynamic positioning of hands and I attempt those and I'm left with a ";__________________;" expression on my face after 2 minutes of rough sketching. :'( Those, and anatomy. I screw the anatomy up quite a bit most of the times. (But that'll get better once I seriously start following tutorials that are there on here :D I couldn't till now because, you know, stuck with mobile for a year D:)
Hair used to be difficult till I understood they're things you can literally go crazy with. Especially if you're doing jap style art. Crazy hair is kind-of a trademark there, you know? :p Either way, you've managed to draw them pretty well! Both Hase and Fujimiya are very recognizable. But it seems you did use a scene as a reference, did you not? Just curious. This here is an original art piece which took me 7 hours to draw. The only reference I used were for hair and clothes and facial structure. Also, Kiryuin Ragyo (top left) is completely referenced since I kinda got bored with the piece near the end. Figured I'd post here since it mostly got ignored on FB groups and kinda in my gallery as well lol. Spoiler:
|
I haven't even attempted hair yet. Well, it's been a while since I've drawn anything, but I'm thinking about picking it up again.
Anatomy is definitely the hardest part for me. Just getting everything looking right without having the arms way too long, or having the body in a comfortable position takes so much time. Just thinking about it has me worried! That, and clothes. I can never get the clothes to look right. They always end up looking so stiff, like they're made of metal, or something. Just figuring out where the clothes should bend and give is the biggest struggle. |
Those things work out just fine with a lil' bit of practice. I think hair will no longer be a problem for you after a mere 5-10 sketches that are dedicated purely to hair. They're the easiest to "get". Anatomy as a whole is a different beast, though. I always get it wrong. No matter how hard I try. XD; And then there's hands. Those. Those are my enemies. :<
Clothes too. But I'm starting to feel a little comfortable with them. I'll have to practice a whole lot more before I am able to draw natural-seeming clothes easily but at least they don't scare me like they used to haha. |
Hands are always a pain, but I think hair is one of the most fun things to draw. You get to use a lot of curved, fluid lines and do whatever shapes you want.
As for clothes, it can be pretty tough to get accurate creases but I've seen some really good guides and references for it. I might have to look through some of my books and see if there's anything worth scanning. |
Quote:
Also don't forget to check our resource thread! n.n; |
The resource thread, of course. That should be referred first! It has all sorts of good stuff compiled by our good staffies Fairy and Gav and a little stuff by yours truly. :D
Hair is easy. Especially if you're going for Japanese anime/manga style. Because there's literally nothing you can not do. Jap style is a crazy style anyway XD; |
I looked through the resource thread earlier and thought that it had a lot of interesting links, definitely a great compilation to check out. It makes me a little sad that I have absolutely no computer skills (nor the patience to learn them) because it looks like there's a lot of information for PS and similar programs.
|
Hair is okay. Sometimes it's less drawing the hair and more shading it that's difficult. Hands are the devil's bane of my existence though but I think I'm starting to get a little better at them???
|
Hands are actually getting better for me! It's really just about looking at how other people draw them. I did a quick half hour study on my favorite mangaka's style of drawing hands and I learned so much in just that one half hour that I really don't need to ref many of my hands anymore if the pose is simple enough.
Agreed with Sora though-- hair is also one of my favorite things to draw-- though one of my least favorite to color since it's so tedious with all the strands. I think the trick to hair is definitely finding the balance between what's too many strands/lines and what's too little. It's a balance that a lot of people find difficult in manga styles I feel-- too little makes it look blocky, like they're wearing a plastic block on their heads-- and too much just makes it look like you're trying too hard LOL... The bane of my existence will always be pictures with more than one person in them because I'm just too lazy and don't have the patience for it LOL o)-< And shoulders. God I hate trying to maintain the balance in shoulders. Personally though, since I'm the laziest sloth ever, I love tablets. The ability to just transform an arm that's too long and make it shorter-- rather than having to erase the whole god damn thing and redrawing it is such a godsend. I'm such a ctrl + Z junkie it's horrible hahaha Recently I discovered a really neat trick to painting digitally! I'm practicing shading with unusual colors, such as purple on teal or brown on green. It's really quite fun-- and it turns out pretty nice! For example: http://puu.sh/9d4ZX/826a9d65b4.jpg It's also really fast which is making my least favorite part of the art process (coloring) much easier.... |
What I've learned is that you don't want to focus on every individual strand when doing hair. yeah, it can look nice but the thing you should focus more on when doing hair is shapes. That's what can help bring out the realism more than each individual stand or at least make it more three dimensional.
(aka hi i actually learned things in drawing 1 wow). Aaaah that' looks nice. I'm still trying to figure out a coloring/shading style that I like that I can do well and doesn't make my picture look flat. I think I'm getting close but I'm not sure if I'm there yet. |
The trick I use for hand-drawing is holding out my own hand in the same position and looking at it. Sometimes I don't have to look at it while holding it up and I can just get a 'feel' for what it would look like. Every now and again I have to hold it up in the position again to 'feel it' while drawing. XD
It's strange how it kinda registers for me like that without looking for a reference but hey, it works! You guys should try it too and see what you think! Also hair has always been somewhat of an issue for me. I think ears are probably why. OTL; |
Oh, using your own hand as reference works wonders. Although it is a flop idea if the hand position you're trying is something that's supposed to have the character's hand point towards the viewer - you won't be able to look at your own hand in that case. And if you try (I have), you might get your hand in a really awkward position and it will just be painful XD; Better to ask someone else around you to pose for you in that case. :p
Btw I have a talented young lad as my friend. Name's Sailesh Gopalan. He made this. Composed of 8 frames. Took him 25 minutes. Spoiler:
also thread title oh you Jo <3 |
I dunno haha, I actually have used my hand to get a feel for the way it would look pointed towards the viewer. That's what I meant in the other post when I said that I've used my own hand to 'feel out' the pose. XD Usually works just fine for me without having to look at it, personally!
Also dat animation. <3 It's really neat! Yeah drawing gets really swift the more and more you do it. But I'm amazed he made 8 lookalike pictures in 25 minutes like that. He must draw really often! It takes me like 15 minutes to do those signatures I make in my shop and they're not framed at all. ovo; also the thread title was somewhat necessary since yay you're back! |
That's a really nice animation, Dero! Stuff like those could be sort of a pain to get through, and it's really surprising that he's managed to get it all done within just 25 minutes. Last time I tried making one, it took approximately an hour. Maybe more, I don't know, haha. It was just a sprite animation, though; if I were to make it from scratch, then it would have taken a lot longer, I'm sure.
|
I'm glad everyone noticed the thread title hahaha.
Last time I tried to make an animation I never finished because I never started because it's too ♥♥♥♥ING HARD. |

Yeah, people can go for battles too. Which reminds me - this place hasn't had tag battles in a while, right? I'm so gonna go for it. Although not today. Soon, though.
OH AND LOL JO YOUR AVATAR IS VERY FUNNY XD I showed my friend your posts. He's happy that you all liked it. ANYWHO, I asked him to link me one AMAZEBALLS gif he made a while ago. And he did. Look at his masterpiece!!! Spoiler:
He's amazing, right? <3; Oh, and if you guys can't identify them - they're Himura Kenshin from Rurouni Kenshin and Roronoa Zoro from One Piece. :D I told that A-hole to join this place and post around as a comrade. But he's too lazy and says he'll do it later (I KNOW HE WON'T SO LAZY UGHHH). |
Ah man I use my own hand as reference all the time. Whether it's me taking a picture of it in front of the mirror because I'm working on a tablet (or because of the position) or holding it out in front of me and doing it that way. I totally agree that it can work wonders.
Wow yeah tell you friend to stop being lazy and come here to post more of his artwork/animations himself because those are amazing and I would love to see more. |

im sorry if im not supposed to post here but i dont know where to post this. i need a review of what i did with this picture. i think i did amazing since i suck at pixel art. like i seriously am the worst at it. i basically took hilberts black and white sprite, and made it into an oshawott fan i.e. me. and i have my shiny oshawott by my side also. i got my own razor shell in my right hand and oshawotts pokeball in my left.
Spoiler:
i can never get my hair right no matter how hard i try and i want a big smile but i feel like i over did it. and my arms look like freakin noodles. any pointers? or would anyone wanna revamp it a little and make it look like an actual sprite because thats what i want it to look like. i would prefer for someone to like fix it a little because of how bad i am at pixel art but i dont wanna be a burden on anyone. IF anyone want to fix it, dont mess with my oshawott. i tried my best to get him as perfect as could be and he is. dont touch him if you try to fix my abomination. |

Right off the bat, chances are no one want to do your sprite work for you, sorry to say, so I'll give you some help. First off, I know you're doing a 2x pixel thing, but your sprite is too big. I mean the white around the sprite so crop it down to fit your image. Next, I'm fairly sure you used the legs of a male trainer sprite (or somesuch sprite), resized it, and drew a body on top of it. So your next step should be to try to do the entire sprite on your own. Then work on making it not so linear, as in using a 3/4 positioning. I'm also concerned because your Oshawott is just the standard B/W sprite, resized, and recolored slightly. So if you want a custom trainer sprite with an Oshawott, I suggest customizing the Oshawott as well. It's not easy learning how to sprite, but it's extremely rewarding once you figure it out. |

i didnt resize oshawott at all. thats his normal blacka and white sprite and im pretty sure i didnt resize hilberts sprite, if i did, it would be smaller because on the app i use it made it way too big. i tried to make all of the sprites the actual black and white sprites because i want it to look official and we all know thats apprently what i cant do. i tried to make it 64 x 64 like a regular ds sprite because thats the only dimensions i have heard of for a ds sprite. seriously i cant do this this is so frustrating and difficult. i tried my best and my best is horrible. i hate spriting -__- |
Everyone in here is so good and drawing the next Mona Lisa and I'm just sitting here like
https://prettyawfulgiraffes.files.wordpress.com/2011/04/img003-e1303083468129.jpg THIS. This is a masterpiece. |
Don't worry, Espeon, not everybody here is good at drawing; personally, I'm terrible. Last time I tried creating something, it took me about an hour, and it still wound up looking like a mess. I couldn't make the outline look straight, and the coloring was… just out-of-line, so to speak. Really do wish that I were better, though!
|
I've been told I draw a pretty mean stick figure. :o
Jokes aside, I suck at drawing - as I can see from the painting that's behind me from 3 years ago...I just can't draw solid shapes at all. I'm considering learning though~ |
That's why you ditch the ink and grab a camera! Well, at least I like snapping photos better than drawing. I should go outside and snap some more, but laziness, etc...

Jokes aside, as the people above said, a lot of people in this section aren't too good at drawing (no offence). I love to browse these sections to look at the few who can actually make 'masterpieces', instead of posting myself. |
so i herd dis iz an art convo...
I'm wondering if I should make a thread gallery. I'm, like, horrible at commitment. Well, I'll continue thinking. In the meantime, BEHOLD Spoiler:
|
I always struggle when it comes to updating my gallery. Since people don't seem to comment much (unless it's also a shop), so it's sort of stuff to keep everything going. Some still indeed do it, though, so their effort should definitely be appreciated!
|
So i've seen some people make cool layouts, and i've wondered what would be the best program to start with if I wanted to try one on a Mac. I've heard some people use Adobe PhotoShop, some people even use Microsoft Word (although not everyone uses the same computer)...and I sure would like to try to make a nice layout that I could use for something snazzy.
|
I've been trying to get back into drawing lately, but I can't find the cord for my tablet which makes me very, very sad. :( This is what I spent a day at work doing because no one has given me work yet:
Spoiler:
I want to try drawing some real people and I saw this Meetup group designed to having someone pose for 3 hours once a week, but one of the regulars is a guy who posted a picture of himself posing nude and listed his interests as things like "tantric" and "massage"...nopenopenopenope |
Hey:)
can I post "this" here? It's a link to my album with a small sample of my character art. A friend here requested that I upload some so I complied. Then, I started thinking I would like to get a few more people's input:) |
Quote:
Hmm I dont think anyone will mind as long as you make sure to put the images in a poiler this way they dont take up the whole forum and people wont have to scroll forever haha. |

I'm thinking of opening up Pokemon chibi requests! Would anyone be interested in artwork of Pokemon in the below style? n~n;

Hello guys i was wondering if i can ask for a thumbnail of this hack http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=330931 if not then sorry for the trouble.
|
Along with my Famine/Feast Project, I so I don't bore myself with one thing, I decided to try some Paper Mario RPG sprites with GBA sprite restrictions. The fighting system could work. Thoughts?
Baby Peach -> Peach -> Star Queen/Fell Queen http://s26.postimg.org/6mlr2vau1/Paper_Peach.png |
Just a PSA, I opened up a signature pic/avatar/graphics shop, link is in my signature if anybody is interested! :)
|
Awesome man, haha. It's nice to see more shops open up around here. I've been thinking of opening up an icon shop myself, but I'm kind of on the fence about it.
|
Another PSA from yours truly! I've started a rather large, rather easy, contest in the Arts & Designs sub-forum that every artists should get involved in! Big prizes to be won, and easy criteria. Hopefully I see you all in there! :)
|
Pats on the back for being gutsy enough to post your own contest. I really, really like that in members; having that kind of initiative and desire to give to the community. I know I already alluded to this in your Icontest thread, but I felt the need to do so again because it's so few and far between.
I'll make sure your thread gets around through PC's twitter and whatnot and make sure everyone knows you're running this event. The more the better! |
Thank you so much, Fairy! I love this community with all of my heart, and I feel like the members should be rewarded for any little thing I can think of rewarding them with! ^.^
This place is my home way from home, and most definitely my internet home. I love it here. <3 |
I really like this part of the forums~ I really do~! :)
|
D'aw, thanks JustTheFx! I really appreciate your support! I can promise that A&D really likes you too. <3
|
I feel horrible that I didn't inform anyone that I'd be away for so long. But I'm back now and the contest is still up and running, if anybody wants to drop by and enter!
Thank you Fairy for locking the thread in the meantime; I'm going to push back the required submission date by a week so that anyone who's missed out can still get involved. |
I would love to see some fakemon, trainers, and evolution contests. Perhaps other pokemon related art competitions, or other popular art themes including Nintendo (Smash Bros, Mario, Zelda), or some other form of design competition that will elicit a good turnout given that this is a pokemon forum.
In order to garner more participants the entries should be open to pixel, digital, hand drawn/painted, or any other medium of art. Judging should be based on design and execution. With an anonymous voting poll. Does the wonderful Fairy approve? |
I'm on board with The Dark Avenger's idea. It'd be a brilliant way to showcase some of PC's amazing pixel/digital/hand-drawn artists.
Could I ask you guys if you'd be able to give me some critique on my current avatar, signature and the new banner I've uploaded as the 'welcome banner' to my shop? Please and thank you. ^.^ |
Quote:
I envy banner makers/photoshopper/digital artist types. I really love when there is cohesion but distinct images, as there is in yours. The font looks great too! Often banners have cheesy/odd font, but yours really belongs. Also, the color choices are subdued yet effective along with the high contrast and lighting. The only critique is that the images seem a bit pixelly on the edge of face in the signature. The avatar could also be crisper. Then again, I don't know what the original stock looks like. Overall, the design and execution make for an effective theme. Great Jawb! (Take everything I say with a grain of salt...I am not a icon/avi/sig maker by any means.) |
Quote:
Just for comparison, any word after the comma I just used will take you to the stock image for my avatar. Likewise, any word after the period I just used will take you to the stock image for the banner in my signature. |
Quote:
Yeah, the original image does have a pixelly effect on the face! I would consider searching that same image on google for different sizes and high quality. If you right click an image you can search image on google, and it will bring you to other sizes/quality of the image. You can also soften edges of the image if you are not able to find the same image. Plus you have already put tons of work into the image. If I ever actual do dabble in photo/image editing (I only do pixel art), I line the edges and select a blur effect....but I am sure there is some more sophisticated way to do it. It took me about two minutes to use a softening tool on the outline. And a reminder, this is a nitpicky suggestion...I love the artwork! Spoiler:
|
Ahh I see what you mean! And thank you for the confidence boosting words, by the way. This is one of the reason I absolutely adore PC.
Did you do the pixel art for your avatar? It looks absolutely amazing regardless! I love the shadows/highlights in it. If you didn't already I'd say open up a Pixel Art Shop, you're immensely talented. They take up quite a bit of time, though, is the only downside. |
Quote:
Fairy does exceptional large pieces if you want to see really nice pixel art. I do have a thread up, but I haven't updated it in a few weeks. I am just shy of finishing a GB style fakemon dex. And yah, PC is great :) |
Flattery will get you everywhere. c;
I'm down if you guys want more competitions, btw! I've been dying to do more fakemon contests, bring back icontest, and a bunch of other things! |
I'd be so down with more contests! Mine is slowly building interest (there's three contestants, so all three prizes are currently decided xP) but I'd be interested in joining in on a few. :)
EDIT: Also, I changed the name of my contest, it's now "VVI's Holiday Giveaway Contest #1 - Halloween Edition". This is due to my plan on doing one every holiday season, e.g. "VVI's Holiday Giveaway Contest #2 - Christmas Edition" which will run reeeal close (and probably interfere with the New Years edition), plus on my birthday (which will also maybe clash with #2 and #3) I plan on running on. That's December 25th, December 31st and January 7th all planned out! :P |
Hey, good on you man for talking the helm on this. I've been soooo utterly busy so investing so much time to running contests has become excruciatingly cumbersome to get anything done!
Oh, and I've put in a request for your thread to be posted on PC's twitter / facebook, so expect activity to rise steadily (hopefully!). :) |
