Which Gym Leaders did you hate?
inb4whitney
Well, welcome to the "be as critical as you can about gym leaders" thread, a.k.a, the "What gym leaders you hate" thread - 1st and 2nd Gen edition. The name of the game's simple enough. You don't have to hate-hate them, disliking's fine. Discuss. |
Easy,
WHITNEY!!! God her Miltank still gives me nightmares.... *shivers* |
I don't think I hated any of them, really. If I had to pick some annoying ones though, Misty in RBY is definitely a pain. Starmie is an amazing Pokemon and having to fight it so early is just...terrible, especially since I'm a Charmander kid. lol
As far as GSC goes, I am actually going to go with Chuck. That DynamicPunch... @[email protected] Especially since I normally don't have many team members that are good against Fighting. It seems like I always have a bunch of Normal types at this point in the game (unevolved Eevee doesn't help) and then I have like...Typhlosion and that isn't gonna cut it against Poliwrath lmao. Just a pain in the butt, really. I've always had more trouble with him than Whitney. |
I didn't really hate any of them. But I agree with Syd, if you start with Charmander and haven't caught anything that can battle against Starmie, Misty can be a pain.
|
Hands down Sabrina. She was always the toughest to beat for me. And the fact she had that annoying teleport gym which was always a pain to get through.
|
Clair not just because of her Kingdra is an Nightmare to beat, she makes you take a test before she will give a bagde.
|
Whitney, IF I SEE THAT MILTANK AGAIN ILL COMMIT SUICIDE.
|
In 1st gen I always found Koga from Fuchsia city gym annoying with his poison Pokemon. I tried to get through it a few times without aid but in the end I had to buy a fair number of antidotes to get past him.
|
Whitney my god that effing milktank
|
I can't recall having too much trouble with any of the Gym Leaders in the first gen, but Clair gave me a rough time once Gold came around. She's the only Gym Leader I can remember having to re-battle, and of course, I never put two and two together when I was young, so I never thought to go back to the Ice Path to catch a Jynx or something.
|
I'm going to disregard the First Generation since I did not have a problem with any of the gym leaders, but the Second Generation I did.......one person that comes into mind which many people have already stated.....her name is crybaby Whitney. That Miltank and her rollout and at first when I was little, I thought that she continuously would spam the move, but I had no idea it was a continuous attack; I would swear up and down around the house because of that Miltank lol.
:354:TG |
Whitney and Claire are both little drama queens who can't take their losses- and that's why I absolutely love winning against those. And for first gen... I never liked Koga. He poisoned by precious Blastoise, every time again D:
|
I don't hate any gym leaders because they were hard to beat, but I hated Whitney because she's such a brat. Also bugsy annoyed me, mostly because I was never sure if that weirdo was a boy or a girl.
|
Brock in Yellow had to have been the most frustrating for me as a kid EVER. No matter how much I tried I couldn't beat him. Pikachu, Pidget and Caterpie couldn't even dent his Geodude. I did it eventually by spamming Sand Attack with Pidgey (at least I think I did lol). I really regret not evolving Caterpie now because if I had Confusion it would have been SO much easier.
In G/S/C the obvious candidate is Whitney. Oh how her Miltank made me want to smash my Gameboy. I laugh now reminiscing about it because I remember how easy Falkner and Bugsy were for my Cyndaquil/Quilava and Pidgey/Pidgeotto, and then BAM. Rollout, oh lord. |
Whitney.
Need I say more? |
I definitely hated Whitney and her Miltank. Then in Yellow, definitely Brock. Pikachu is practically useless against him! D:
|
Brock in yellow i can remember clear as day. i remember getting smashed. reviving my pokemon. getting smashed. reviving my pokemon. ect. (when i say pokemon i mean pikachu, and some random freshly caught wild pokemon with no training what so ever)
i gave up yellow for months. until i finally one day i was watching pokemon on tv and i seen that butterfree evolved from metapod. and i decided to get one. because i remember seeing hundreds of them in vidaran forest. i then decided to take on brock. and my level 14 butterfree wiped the floor with geodude and onix. to my amazement. bare in mind i was very young and had little knowledge of weakness's and type advantages. and for misty. she was easy too because of good old butterfree. for whitney. i never had a problem with her because i always had a geodude by goldenrod. because i liked the move magnitude. and yeah. i will admit, miltank was tough. but not tough enough. chuck. on the other hand. now he's a good gym leader. but thats another story. |
I really liked all of them, but I guess that Claire and Whitney were pretty tough. Chuck was also a bit of a pain sometimes. Overall though I really liked them all.
|
Misty's starmie is hard to compete with, that was probably the worst for me.
|
For Generation I, I would say Sabrina, if just because of how overpowered the Psychic-type is in those games.
And Generation II I'd say Whitney, I think we all know why. Quote:

Morty always gave me problems in Gold. His Gengar's Hypnosis attacks hit 90% of the time it seemed, and any damage that I could give to it would just vanish from Dream Eater.
|
Whitney, I can't tell you how many times it took.
|
On Pokémon Yellow I hated Brock. Getting caterpie to level 10 for butterfree for confusion was such a chore each playthrough.
|
In Red, I had a lot of difficulties with Misty. Sabrina was tough too.
And in Gold/Silver I had problems with Whitney, Morty, and Clair. I even forgot about my Plain Bagde (Whitney starts crying after losing) and I didn't take it until a few days after beating her. I hated Clair the most because she refused to give the badge until I found the Dragon Fang. |
Claire from Blackthorn in Jhoto.
To be the highest ranking gym leader and be the least professional. That's not setting a good example. |
hmm... Jasmine... Urg sometimes I destroy her, othertimes she just utterly destroys me...
I could also include Whitney, not because of her Mi...ii..ltank... but her fit at the end of the battle... she's a gym leader, does she do that EVERYTIME? (yes, she does, to everyone...) |
I really detest Whitney... Normal are annoying already (when based around attract as the go-to move) plus the tantrum at the end just adds to it.
|
Whitney goes without saying. That Miltank is not of this universe. There's no possible way it can be anything other than such.
I've always had varying issues with Koga and Sabrina in Gen I. The rest of the leaders weren't so difficult. |
Brock in Yellow, because at the age I was playing that I didn't realise I could catch a Mankey on Route 22 and make life easy for myself :/
Misty's Starmie mostly because it's a massive jump up from Brock. Lt. Surge only because I needed a Cutter to get to him, same with Erika.. Sabrina - OMFG Stupid Psychic with no weaknesses in Gen1. then Giovanni, merely because of the fact that after all of it, he's ridiculously easy to beat. At least GSC made it a challenge to get the 8th badge. and need I mention Whitney's Miltank? Uber frustrating because at a young age, even with a guide book, I didn't realise I could get a Machop in Goldenrod Dept. store......... |
Get a female starter and Whitney isn't much trouble at all. Rollout + Milk Drink was still slightly annoying.
I didn't like Misty in the games.. Her Starmie can give you a hard time if you got Charmander (in FR/LG.) Erika's personality made me want to smack her up so badly. |
My first thought was Whitney but after thinking it over, I realized I don't hate her but just that Miltank of hers. The gym leader I hate most is Clair because she's a sore loser and makes you go on a really pointless side quest before she'll give you the badge.
|
Erika.
Stun Spore, Wrap, Wrap, Wrap, Wrap, wrap...damned.. |
Blain, because once while doing the Missingno glitch way back in the day on my Red Version. While surfing on the east coast of Cinnebar, suddenly the screen goes black for a long time. I'm all, "Alright, about time you show up Missingo!" (I was little, impatient, and didn't know how to say it's name properly.) Suddenly when the screen turns back on who's there? Not Missingno, but instead it was Blain. The text read, Wild Blain wants to Battle!" Then to my surprise he sends out "sdluaygfbsldiu" or something along those lines, and what was it? It was the skeleton Kabutops found in the Pewter City Museum. It goes about using it's move titled "dgfasliugfblva" or whatever and bam! My game freezes.
Not much of a legit reason to be hating on Blain, but he's not too cool in general either. |
Whitney, omg. I could never get past her Miltank. And then of course the fit she throws after. Definitely hated her :p
|
Please stop bringing up the horrors of Whitney's miltank
Spoiler:
|
In Gen 1, Brock in Yellow because it's such a hassle to either try winning with Pikachu, train a Caterpie to Lv. 10 and spam Confusion until you win, or catch a Mankey, which I never realized I could do.
Misty's Starmie is really annoying, but she's overall not that bad, unlike a certain gym leader I haven't mentioned yet that I think we all know about. Sabrina and Psychic types that pretty much have no weakness in Gen 1, they're really annoying. Clair has that annoying Kingdra, but it's not as bad as Juan's in Emerald. We all know the one. Even after that, she's such a sore loser and refuses to give you a badge, but in Crystal, if you play your cards right, you can get a free Extremespeed Dratini. Then, there's her. Whitney, the scourge of just about every Gen 2 player's childhood. Well, not Wintney as a person, but her evil cow of death, Miltank. I don't think I need to say any more since all the other posts speak for me about that demon cow. |
I had a hard time beating Bugsy for some reason.
|
Picked Charmander in Pokemon Red, WORST CHOICE EVER, especially for Brock and Misty.
Picked Cyndaquil in Pokemon Gold, WHY DOES MILKTANK HAVE TO KNOW ROLLOUT??? |
RBY, I never really had trouble with any of the leaders. Always a decent amount of type-advantageous Pokémon available before the leaders, but GSC, like everyone else, I had trouble with Whitney. That damn Miltank made me throw my Game Boy more times than I could count. I can't tell you how many days I spent grinding on Route 34/35 trying to beat her...
|
In yellow, I can remember Sabrina being a bit of a pain. Psychic types were almost indestructible back then if you weren't thoroughly prepared with a solid team. Of course being the kid I was, I can remember getting frustrated and having to teleport my way through the gym to get to her again (which seems like it takes forever. This does not nearly compare to the the first gym leader Brock, though. It is (or was) very difficult to beat his Onix with a Flying type, bug type and a Pikachu that doesn't even listen (smh).
As for Gen 2, almost everyone seems to say Whitney was the worst. I'm not going to lie; I took her out in one attempt. I just don't see why some thought she was so hard. I guess if your starter was Cyndaquil it would be tricky. I thought the worst was either Morty or Jasmine. I'm not sure why, but I remember them worrying me that I might loose. I guess they have fairly solid pokes (no pun on Jasmine intended :P). All of this said, there isn't a gym leader I've encountered so far that I hate... knock on wood. |
Gen I: I had more issues with the Elite Four than the Gym Leaders, but if I had to choose the hardest for me it would be Blaine. I'm not even sure why to be honest, I just get extremely unlucky fighting him. My water types never seemed to kill, and I'd be constantly healing away his burn hax.
Gen II: Clair, her Kingdra is something else. It was usually because I would get unlucky misses from her smokescreen spam all the time. I never really had a specific pokemon that could beat it easily either. It was always a team effort that ended in failure most of the time. |
I have no hatred against any of the RBY Gym leaders, but in GSC, boy did I have a hatred forWhitney.. she was definitely one of the most tough gym leaders in those games, and all because of her Miltank + Rollout. I remember one time training a Pokémon to get as much as 5 levels above her Miltank, and it still fainted.
At least in HGSS, Game Freak didn't make Whitney as difficult of a trainer. I guess they got that many complaints about her. xD |
In Yellow, the most troublesome was actually Brock because well.. I don't think there were any types that you could catch that were supper-effective against rock types
. In Silver, I've hated Whitney and Clair because they were the most annoying to defeat.. Whitney with her troll Miltank and Clair with her dragon types. |
Kanto: I disliked Misty since I always had problems with her Starmie since I often used Charmander or Squirtle as my starters.
Johto: I really disliked Whitney. Her Miltank where a real pain! It was almost unbeatable. |
Quote:
Also because when I beat her, she says she still doesn't think I am good enough for the Elite 4...even after she said, "I can even hold my own against the Elite 4." I really want to smack Clair. XD |
Bugsy (Chikorita as starter) and Whitney (Miltank) for Gen II and Sabrina for Gen I.
|
Everybody hates Whitney. She would cry just now...
I hated Morty more, his Gengar's hypnosis is a pain in the butt. |
Whitney... and her Miltank, I always assumed normal type sucke dbut damn I was wrong when I got that gym
|
To me; Falkner was a pushover with any starter, bugsy was the same, Whitney was difficult because my time usually never has a fighting type by that point, Morty easy, chuck could be difficult, jasmine easy peasy, pryce easy and Clair is always incredibly hard. So basically I can't stand Whitney or Clair and chuck is a bit meh.
|
Whitney. I hate that miltank.
I also don't like Claire, because even though her fight was surprisingly easy, her entire attitude after you beat her is annoying and unprofessional. |
Claire was actually pretty hard for me cuz I deal with elemental types a lot. And then that Kingdra...
|
Clair then Whitney
Both took a fair few attempts when I was a young'un and first playthroughs ever |
I chose Chikorita for my starter in Crystal. Bugsy's Gym Killed me multiple times. I then made a new game and chose Cyndaquil instead. I managed to have an easier time with Whitney's Miltank than Bugsy's Scyther!
|
Whitney no doubt, that overpowered miltank with flinch hax stomp strategy is just so cheap. That's the only reason why my team carries a female geodude.
|
I hated Falkner, not for his battle strategy though. He has that premature Pidgeotto and I am always like "Whoa dude. Your Pidgeotto's at level 12. Its not supposed to have evolved yet."
Though when it comes to difficulty, Janine takes the cake. (If Kanto leaders count). If Johto counts, it would be Claire. |
Sabrina in Pokemon Yellow. THREE level 50 Pokemon at the fifth/sixth gym? That has never happened since because it's ridiculous.
|
I actually never had a problem with Whitney's Miltank, my starter was always overleveled hehe ^_^' i think i'm the only one though.
I never liked Clair much because she made you go into that stupid cave after you beat her |
in b4 Whitney? I still say Whitney. Combination of stomp, attract, rollout, and milk drink... Game Freak surely nailed it on that one.
|
pokemon of rocks and brock
|
I disliked Misty. Her damn water pulse always made me confused. And recover -.-
Along with Koga's Venamoth. Let's not even get on that damned Miltank... Anyone else notice in 1st gen how Brock is a CM Punk fan? haha. Yes, I like wrestling, sue me ha |
Clair was one of the hardest leaders I've fought in G/S/C. At the time I was battling her, I used to have a level thirty-eight Typhlosion. It was my strongest Pokémon, and she used to be able to take it out instantly by allowing her Kingdra to use Surf. Noctowl was also one of my strongest, and her Dragonair was able to defeat it quite easily with Ice Beam and Thunderbolt. d:
Whitney was a hard opponent for me as well. Her Milktank was one of the toughest Pokémon I've ever faced. Every time I managed to get its health down, it used to restore itself to more than half of its HP with Milk Drink. |
When I was 8 playing Yellow, Brock used to kill me until I wised up.
And as far as Whitney goes... I beat her and her OP Miltank on my first try ever and I've struggled since. |
Whitney wasn't that hard, really. Get an Ampharos or a Kadabra and destroy it with Special attacks.
Brock was easy if you caught that Mankey next to Viridian City. Everybody seems to forget that. My least favorite is Blue. But he is also my favorite. His party isn't type specific. I went in prepared for ground types, but instead I was up against Exeggutor. @[email protected] |
Sabrina in Gen 1...Damned OP Psychic types. Whitney was never really a problem for me, not sure why not!
|
The first two gym leaders I think of right off the bat is Whitney(gen 2) and Brock(gen 1).
I think Whitney is obvious but Brock was hard because if you didn't choose bulbasaur or squirtle as your starter you would have a long battle with your charmander using ember. Plus, all the pokemon between pallet town and pewter city or bug, poison, flying, and electric types. The worst types against rock types. Even though we're all old enough now to win no problem even with a charmander I still remember the day I battled my first gym leader(A.K.A Brock), I got a rude awakening. It was then that I realized that Pokemon doesn't mess around as far as difficulty goes. Ah sweet memories :P |
Sabrina in Gen I was always tough for me to battle against and definitely Whitney & Clair in Gen II. Man they were beasts. I hated Whitney's Miltank and all of Clair's dragons.
|
KOGA, HANDS DOWN. I had no problem with him in the Kanto portion of Crystal, but after beating Crystal I got Yellow (and eventually Emerald - I have a thing for the 3rds), and I was used to the Gen 2 thing of gym leaders being able to use items but only once per battle.
AND THEN I GET TO KOGA AND HE X EVADES HIS VENONAT LIKE EIGHT FREAKIN' TIMES. SO I'M POISONED AND I CAN'T HIT HIM AT ALL. IT WAS GREAT. TOTALLY. I'M NOT STILL A BROKEN SHATTERED HUSK OF A HUMAN BEING, CAPABLE OF BREATHING, BUT INCAPABLE OF TRULY LIVING. NOPE. |
Whitney's damn Miltank was so difficult the first few times I played GSC...
|
I would say I hate Chuck. Because most of the time I ended up missing my attacks, so he ends up countering me by using surf and then focus punch.
|
I'm going to say Clair. The Kingdra she has gave me nightmares for a long time. It took me a long time to beat her originally as well. I do not want to think about her too much *shivers*
|
Quote:
Even more though I hated Wallace's Kingdra in Emerald. I remember being down to a lv. 20 Shedinja vs his Kingdra who had already used double team... Nightmarish long battle. |
Whitney is not bad, as there's two reasonably simple ways to beat her:
1) Machop, which you get in exchange for a Drowzee. With a minimum of grinding, you can overpower the whole gym with a single Pokemon, Whitney included. 2) Ghastly/Haunter. The only problem is that her Miltank has Rollout, which is a Rock move if I remember right, so it can hit your Ghost. However, if you can manage to get a Hypnosis off on it, you can usually either swap out to something better (like Machop) or teach it some Poison/Psychic moves during the levelup process so that it can damage the Miltank and maintain sleeplock on it. The trainer that gives me trouble to this day is Morty actually. His Haunters are OK; his Gengar is usually what rips me a new one. |
I did not like facing Whitney and her miltank it took several hours to beat her i had great joy once i finally beat her.
|

I think Whitney speaks for herself. I still cringe.
|
I've hated Blue back then, but now I think Whitney is worse....
