Red Gyarados
Most of you playing the oldies, GSC, would remember the only shiny Pokemon that appeared in part of the storyline of the GSC Games. The shiny Garydos at the Lake Of Rage was pretty elusive, if you didn't have the right Pokemon and Pokeballs to capture it. Did you capture it? If not, how did it slip through your hands? Or maybe, you didn't even want the Garydos in the first place? Let's get posting, PCers! :D
He didn't slip through my hands when I happened across him. I saved right before the encounter! :D
I used him all the way up to the Elite Four. I mean, who wouldn't?! He was a RED GYARADOS!!! |
Oooh, good topic. <3 Makes me happy! Anyway, I missed it the first time playing Silver. :( I've gotten it subsequent times and have used it. I don't really remember what caused me to mess up the first time, though. I wanna say an accidental crit and I didn't save right before facing it, so yeah. ;( Never made that mistake again haha.
The first time I can recall playing, I actually knocked out the Red Gyarados, but luckily I saved right before I went to battle it. I did catch it the second time around, though, and it quickly became my Water HM slave, just as it did in HeartGold.
I do remember that the Red Gyarados was one of the first Pokemon that I practiced cloning, though. I think at one point I had well over a dozen (and it's not like they were holding Rare Candies or anything...). |
i thought red garydos was a glitch so i reset my game :(
It did not escape me the first time I played the game, it when in to the box straight away as I had a water type already. Sure I would of used it if I hadn't had a water type in my party already.
I was so amazed by it...like it was a legendary, haha! I saved before and ultimately caught it. Little did I know that it was a shiny, or that it would probably be the only shiny I'd ever catch.....heh.
The only shiny I've ever encountered in my 5 generations of Pokemon playing,I always saved before hand not about to let that thing go,so epic.

I've been playing pokemon since pokemon yellow very first came out. i learnt that when i was going up against an 'event' pokemon i would save before hand. i learnt this from zapdos over 10 years ago. i always used to turn my game off if it wasn't a male. back in those days i obsessed over having an all male team. sexist i know. but yeah. i was young and under the impression females where weaker. :P
but he did nothing but sit in my box afterwards. poor red guy. |
I caught it and it made a valuable member on my team! It was really weak to be honest, but I knew it was special so I made him work. I always made sure I caught this guy everytime.
I never caught him, I never really liked him to be honest. I think it's due to those childhood days on Red trying to get the magikarp you buy at mt moon to evolve. God that was repetitively boring lol.

I always caught him of course on every play through I just put him in the box though. |

In order for a poke to be female, it would have to have an attack DV of 0 or 1. So yes, you were right XD But yeah, I always made sure to catch the Red Gyarados whenever I play the game, even now. |
I captured it every time I encountered it (I have Silver and Crystal). I mean, who wouldn't want a red Gyarados? I raised him to a high level and had Dragon Rage amongst its move set but I forget the other moves I taught it.
I caught him a few times - sometimes I killed him on accident. I think I probably used him once or twice for the whole game, but for the most part, no. He was pretty cool though!
I remember the first time I played Silver version, I decided to use all the Pokemon which were rare for only one in the game; all except Legendaries, of course. I had Typhlosion (of course), Togetic, Espeon, Sudowoodo, the Red Gyarados, and I believe that was it. The Red Gyarados didn't phase me with "how I was going to catch it?", but rather how hard it hit! So the first time I got to that point, I was so scared it might kill my team, I killed it! Luckily I saved before...so I got it at the second try. He's a very strong pokemon!
I've caught him in Gold, Silver and Crystal. He was my main Water Pokemon in Silver (I put Feraligatr in the Box for him).
I remember this guy lol
I knocked him out the first time thinking it was just the female version, kinda like Nidoran lol... and later that day I watch the episode when they encounter it and explained it was special and what not... I felt so dumb lol |
always caught it, but never really use it.
now that I think about it, the shiny Gyarados in gen II is the blue one, cause I believe all player catch it, which means only a few player have Blue Gyarados. LOL |
I thought it was cool but I never really tried too hard to catch it. I usually always had a Gyarados already as I got a magikarp asap in the game, and I didn't care for really collecting pokemon as much as having strong pokemon haha.
Red Garydos for along time up til a few years ago where i found a shinny Zubat was the only shinny I had/found
I caught it but didn't use. Just wanted a shiny Gyarados for the sake of having one.. poor thing has been gathering dust in my box since. ;(
I would always save in front of it and reset until I captured it. But I never actually used it haha
I remember my first play and had missed him. :( Didn't feel like going back and catching him. :D
I caught him everytime I played through them. He's always gone into my elite 4 battles with THRASH ;-)
I used to love this guy. When I was little, he seemed like the coolest thing ever. I didn't even know that other Pokemon could also be a different color! I would save before attempting to capture it, and typically used him on my team. Looking back, he ended up being the only HM slave I really used in battle. In the remakes, he is much less exciting, and I don't always bother getting him.
It was my first shiny. It was amazing catching and having it, i loved how diffrent it was haha. ~blu
I'd always include him. And later on, I'd always elegantly call him Slifer the Sky Dragon.
Yeah, I know it doesn't really work, but he was red and a "dragon." Go with it. He'd always be a big help in all of my matches. And even when I accidentally had only Water types on my team for Crystal, (Except for Lugia >.> ) he was there. |
I don't really use it since it's not very good in GSC. I guess it's useful though since it introduces people to shiny Pokemon and makes for an okay HM slave.
Its a red gyrados I just cant let that slip I was Playing in VBA and slotsaved till I caught it
Gyarados is not as menacing as it was supposed to be in Gen II because the physical/special split was based on type not the move, and Gyarados had a low Sp. Atk, so naturally its water type moves weren't going to be as strong as I imagined the first time I tried to use him. Red Gyarados just ended up being a glorified HM Slave. Plus, Gyarados being a guaranteed shiny just undervalued its shininess.
I caught him not for the sake of using him but for breeding.
the cause of the contamination of Team Rocket
I thought I was super lucky because it was shiny, so I captured and used him until the final battle.
Years later I find out it is always shiny, but didn't regret it at all. |
I think I missed him on my first play and went back and restarted the game because I didn't think there was a way to catch him if you didn't the first time. (And there wasn't, naturally.) He was really cool at first but he's sort of lost his novelty to me after being a Pokemon fan for so long. I used him so many times that if I were to start another save file on G/S/C, I'd probably just defeat him if he was too much trouble for me and just make sure to collect the Dragon Scale to trade for the Exp. Share.
I did like the way shinies looked in G/S/C, though, I have to say it's my favorite of the shiny entrances (the sparkles before a battle). Gyarados is a pretty great Pokemon but by now he's lost his ~*shiny novelty*~ to me, haha. I was obsessed with him when I was younger, though. |
I didn't use it, I think, because there were a lot other water types I liked better than Gyarados at the time. Plus, I was annoyed that it was red when I wanted my water types to be blue! Haha, I was a bit silly.
I've used it for a little while, but then I replaced it with Lugia. Red Gyarados didn't really feel too special to me, since I was able to catch it just because it was a part of the story. If I had caught it randomly (just like most of my other shiny Pokémon), then maybe I would've kept it on my team. Just maybe, haha.
I used it well into Kanto. That Gyarados saved my team several times during the Johto Elite Four. It was replaced by Snorlax after some time, however.
The first time I caught the red Gyarados I used it up until I got to Kanto. After I restarted my Gold version I caught it, but didn't use it. I did clone it a couple times to get copies of TMs.
I captured it, and I used it in my team. I also used it for breeding.
When I caught the Red Gyarados in Gold, I used it as one of my HM slaves.
Got him always. but the first time I caught him, I forgot to save and therefore lost it. My bat was gone and had to charge for like a day -_-
Best HM Slave for Waterfall IMO. Too bad I HAD to take Feraligatr in Gold. Or else I would have used him.
Good for chain-breeding Shiny Magikarps, however. I was lucky enough to get a female shiny Magikarp, after which I managed to get more Shiny Magikarps, and finally got other Shinies. It isn't easy, I spent sleepless months doing this. Now if I got Colloseum... I really liked the "master of Lake of Rage" part, though. |
I always caught the red Gyarados because it seemed really cool. I loved that it was a shiny Pokemon that was guaranteed to appear. I never used it tho I just kept it as a collector's item or as an HM slave for moves like Whirlpool and Waterfall.
Coolest thing ever to see Red Gyarados for the first time, all shining with the ching-ching-ching sound. To be honest, I haven't ever found a wild shiny Pokemon outside of Red Gyarados despite playing all the mainline games for many hours. Well, least Gen II gave me some slack with Red Gyarados. Haha.
I always caught the Red Gyarados, though I don't think I ever really bothered training it. For me, if a Pokémon could be seen on the overworld map prior to the battle (as in the case of Gyarados, Sudowoodo, and legendaries), it was worth my while to save first and battle it as many times as necessary to catch it. In Gyarados's case, I think I caught it the first time, though.
I do believe I dragged it along with me when I went to battle the Elite Four, but that was because the only Pokémon I had was a (fairly weak, unevolved) Totodile when I first played through Gold. I think it mainly served as attack fodder while I revived/healed Totodile. |
Besides my first starter, getting that red Gyrados was the first Pokemon I remember being completely, totally over the moon about catching. I just felt so cool and so accomplished, and every run through I made sure to get him.
Except, for some reason, when I got HeartGold, I forgot about him and spent all my Pokewalker time leveling up a Magikarp to get a Gyarados, only realizing halfway through that a hand-delivered shiny Gyarados with a good moveset was waiting for me. D'oh. |
I caught her first time around but it was female and even today I won't use or even look at a female pokemon for some reason it's super sexist but I just hated it since I was under the impression the male is the strongest but some pokemon that I caught that were female I kept just never used. I actually don't mind feminine looking pokemon being female but I hate feminine looking pokemon being male, ralts must be a girl unless I want gallade, Heatran must be a guy cause it looks like a guy jigglypuff has to be a girl and so on
I'd just save right before battling it so I could always know if I needed more Pokéballs or a different lead to catch him.
I thought Red Gyarados was epic when I first saw it. I didn't even realise it was a shiny, I thought it was a stronger version of the original Gyarados. I used it throughout the game, even in the Kanto area.
I always nicknamed my Red Gyarados when I had Gold. His name was always Redy, granted I was 6 or 7 when I got the game.
I never really was a fan of Gyrados, and him being red didn't change my opinion in the least. That and the fact that he kept destroying my team made me lust for his blood. It was so satisfying when my level 14 Togapi annihilated him with metronome. ^.^
I do admit though, after playing through the game again recently, I've found him to be extremely helpful in defeating the Elite Four. |
I pretty much always caught it on playthroughs because as a kid my favorite pokemon was Gyrados.... so to have a RED one was big stuff. I never used it though, and never had a Gyrados for a main.
