Overall, I'm pleased with the roster. Baby Bowser is a neat addition (though I hear his costume changes are actually all the Koopa Kids - if so, VERY awesome). I like the Duck Hunt Dog because he fits with the crazy ones like ROB and Game n' Watch (it's nice seeing Nintendo give tribute to some of their classics). If Dixie is really DLC or is in on release, I'll be thrilled.

Still don't care for Dr. Mario or Dark Pit. Ice Climbers and Snake are preferable, in my opinion.

wolf August 26th, 2014 12:03 PM

I'm very happy with the leaked roster assuming Ridley gets in. Ridley and Rosalina & Luma are the only newcomers I really care about. Probably going to main Samus regardless, though.

I'm wondering why they couldn't clone Fox and Ness for Wolf and Lucas, respectively. That would've satisfied those who used them a lot in Brawl, whereas Dark Pit doesn't have an established SSB fan base yet and Dr. Mario has already been cut before. Oh well, there's still a chance they'll return. We can hope. :(

Jakeremix August 26th, 2014 2:12 PM

People really need to stop calling Dark Pit a clone. If you actually played Uprising, you'd know that he isn't a clone. And Dr. Mario was almost identical to Mario in Melee, true, but they wouldn't have brought him back if they weren't going to change him up...

With that being said, I haven't heard anything about Dixie some of the other characters that have been discussed... Only Bowser Jr., Dog, Pittoo, and Shulk (and obviously all the returning fighters). If this is the final roster, I will be pretty darn pleased. Half of my wishlist (with 10 fighters) got in and three more of them are non-playable in the game, so that's pretty awesome.

But when you're given the chance to play as him in one of the chapters in the main camepaign and the Light Vs. Dark multiplayer, he plays exactly like Pit. The only difference I could see Dr. Mario have apart from Mario is his old Down Special move and a new final smash.

It was from a rumor that predated the leaked screenshots from the roster. I have it linked in my last post.

It was confirmed by the leaker that this is not the final roster, because the All-Star Mode in one of the leaked screenshots shows a locked icon. Even though we've lost a couple of veterans and not get other newcomers we've want. There's always the chance of DLC. Nintendo of Europe just revealed character DLC for Mario Kart 8, so who's to say Smash Bros. won't get one either?

I agree, especially since he's located next to the other clones as opposed to next to Pit. And I can see Dr. Mario using the old Down special, and a final smash involving throwing other characters into a bottle and dropping pills on them like in the game. xD

Now that we know the leak is real (gonna main Shulk!), and if that rumor screenshot about Mewtwo, Ridley, and others being playable is true(I'm starting to think it is, considering the other details it talked about were true, and they could be the remaining characters the leaker was talking about), I can say I'm quite pleased with the roster. Every character I've wanted (bar Ghirahim T_T) to be playable actually are, like Shulk, Bowser Jr. (7 Koopalings as alts? Awesome!), and Dark Pit. This is shaping up to be the best Smash since Melee. Sucks that Ice Climbers appear to be cut, along with Wolf and Lucas. And we still don't get King K. Rool. I also don't like that Ganondorf is still a Falcon clone. He deserves a whole new moveset, with swords and dark magic, like Hyrule Warriors' version of him.

Also, am I the only one who absolutely loves the fact that the Duck Hunt Dog is playable? I mean, it makes sense, considering every Smash since Melee has modernized a early-Nintendo-days retro character. I can see his final smash being similar to Zero Suit Samus's gunship, except you use the NES Zapper, then at the end, he does his trademark laugh (with the original sound effect, of course).

Spinosaurus August 27th, 2014 11:10 AM

If Wario's trophy description is any indication, they kept his Brawl moveset. All I needed to know!

Now just officially confirm him I need to see him in action ;_;

Because Lucas and Wolf really aren't clones, they're just designed with the concept of an existing characters. All their moves, animations, properties etc are all different. Lucas only shares 2 animations with Ness. (FSmash and Up B)

With that in mind, they take as much time as any other veteran that isn't a clone. Doc, Lucina and Dark Pit, on the other hand, are very easy to add and take absolutely no time because the work is already there. We know Lucina has the exact same animations as Marth, and Doctor Mario was the same in Melee so he'll probably share animations with Mario again (except for Down B HOPEFULLY). Dark Pit, going off his placement on the select screen, will probably be the same as them. The only thing needed is unique taunts, idle and victory animations, changed moves properties and new voice lines. (Which is especially easy for Doc and Dark Pit because they share voice actors from the characters they're cloned from.)

I'm assuming the reason they cut Wolf and Lucas, despite being unique all things considered, is because they're redundant. As mentioned, they're designed upon an existing concept, so to a lot of people, they're really repetitive. Ice Climbers are tricky, and honestly, hard to design. In Melee they had some pretty broken techniques, which weren't fixed in Brawl. Nevermind the design problems hey have on the 3DS, they're just poorly designed in general. I don't think that's the only reasons they were cut, but time constraints was probably a problem. Sakurai mentioned that Lucina moved up from being an alt because they had to cut a character mid-development, so she was only there to pad the roster, and I'm assuming Doc and Dark Pit got the same treatment because two other cuts happened. 3 clones made up for 3 cut veterans. I'm assuming Snake (THIS IS BULL AND INEXCUSABLE), Squirtle and Ivysaur were planned to be cut from the beginning.

TL:DR: It's either Lucina, Doc and Dark Pit or nothing at all. The former is the winning option.

Again, that was a mistranslation from July's Famitsu scans. Nobody got cut for Lucina; any character who do end up getting cut is always due to time constraint, so nobody replaced anyone (seeing as how Mewtwo, Roy, and Dr. Mario were originally planned to return in Brawl after looking at all the leftover data files via hacking).

I didn't say they replaced anybody, I said they were likely promoted to a playable character to pad the roster so they could make up for these cuts.

I guess that's still replacing them per se, but not the same idea.

Patrick August 27th, 2014 12:41 PM

I forgot if I ever posted in this thread. At any rate I'm gonna just get straight to it:

Spoiler:

  • Ice Climbers better not be cut, too iconic.
  • I dunno how to feel about Lucas... I mean the more Mother the merrier, and I wasn't too upset about the idea of him being cut until it looked more and more likely, and now I don't want him gone at all. Possibly torn because slight character attachment, and yet I'm not the biggest fan of Mother 3 (beyond visual aesthetics) compared to the first two in some ways. Speaking of...
  • Please God let that Magicant stage be real and not a bunch of off guesses. Mother's Magicant has always been one of my favorite surreal locales in the series next to EarthBound's Moonside. Plus, it'd be nice to get an official update on the tune beyond the decades old vocal album. I haven't heard a fan arrangement get that last part of the song right... probably ever (the timing is always just a little off, making it sound emptier).
  • CHORUS KIDS. I saw a faked screenshot from 4chan or somewhere and I never realized how much I needed it. I love Rhythm Heaven, but I was kind of skeptical about a rep. But if the Chorus Kids retained a 2D look like G&W, I'm all in (well, if they're in). Otherwise I'll take Karate Joe, I suppose (I--- suppose~ hey).
  • Hopefully the MK8 DLC is a good indication of things to come for Smash in the future. I gave up on roster dreams midway through Brawl's prerelease, I mean, I've got Mega Man and Pac-Man now. What more can I ask for (aside from Bomberman. The three "men"... hmmm, gee they weren't very creative with names in the 80's)? But I would be happy to see more crazy character designs introduced in the future. Or Jimmy T. What a trip that'll be.

Spinosaurus August 28th, 2014 4:31 PM

The Wario trophy leak kinda got me in a Warioware mood.

Now I need this song in Smash.

Alfieri August 29th, 2014 3:54 AM

So the Shulk leak was true. I'm worried about the full roster then. x.x

I just find some of the other characters that were leaked to be disappointing is all. I like some of the new ones but I don't like the clones.

BrandoSheriff August 29th, 2014 5:29 AM

Shulk was the one character next to Ghirahim that I wanted playable, and I'm glad he was officially confirmed. And what do you know, the art's the same as in the leaked pictures. If this doesn't convince still-skeptics that the leak is 100% real, I don't know what will. And that list of rumored playables from the link Pinkie-Dawn provided must be real too, because the details after the leak are 100% true thanks to Shulk's reveal. So, playable Ridley guys (and Mewtwo!!!). Go nuts! xD

(Kinda ruined the surprise though... the leaker couldn't wait one more week?)

bobandbill August 29th, 2014 6:24 AM

Good to see official confirmation, and also getting to see him properly now with all those moves and using the Monado. Interesting play style! And I really like that Riki and Dunban show up in the final smash (but what about Reyn time!?)

Gaur plains being in as a stage and tune is excellent as well. Cannot wait.

Also (Assist trophy image):

Trophy, trophy!

http://www.smashbros.com/us/howto/entry6.html Assist trophies, there's other pages too (like pokeball Pokemon). Pretty sure Midna was shown off as a trophy ages back though, unless I imagined that?

Nah, you're most likely right. Which is a shame though, considering Midna would have been sweet as a playable character. Still, if she's a trophy, maybe there's future hope for her as a playable character sometime in the future (not this game considering she's a trophy, but maybe a future installment.)

I don't really care that much for Shulk. His moveset doesn't really interest me that much and to be honest, I'm surprised that Nintendo decided to choose a character from Xenoblade Chronicles from all games instead of a more classic Nintendo franchise such as Wario, Ganondorf, and a Golden Sun/DK character? Either one would have been a nice addition.

I'm much less surprised - it's a good chance for them to promote a newer franchise ('newer' as in for outside Japan/of late, unlike Golden Sun). Xenoblade did pretty well with sales (and that whole Project Rainfall deal with it too shows his game had a rather large demand), now is getting a port to the 3ds which gives it even greater exposure, and next year (pending) another X game is coming to the Wii U. Pushing this series seems to be the motive, like how they used Marth and Roy in Melee when Fire Emblem wasn't known too much outside of Japan and the fanbase for the series back then. Look how FE has come since then! And after all, Smash Bros is like a celebration of all of Nintendo, old and new.

(It also seems from other leaks earlier on that Wario and Ganondorf are in, and imo they are likely to be in regardless).

Alfieri August 29th, 2014 6:59 AM

Anyone else feel annoyed about the amount of complaints about having another sword fighter in the game?

That's like complaining about too many fighters using their hands and feet. >__>

Spinosaurus August 29th, 2014 7:57 AM

Starting roster (from japanese eShop)

In comparison, full roster:

Leaving:
-Bowser Jr
-Wario
-Game&Watch
-Ganondorf
-ROB
-Ness
-Jigglypuff
-Duck Hunt
-Falco
-Doctor Mario
-Lucina
-Dark Pit

As unlockables. 12 characters.

Woooow Wario being unlockable is SUPER lame.

Pinkie-Dawn August 29th, 2014 8:57 AM

It's interesting to note that Luigi and Toon Link are in the starting roster, making the latter our first clone starter. As for Wario being an unlockable, it's not the first time this happened to him. *points to Mario Golf 64 and Mario Kart 7*

The problem with Midna is that, aside from spin-offs, she's only appeared in one Zelda game, just like Skull Kid, Zant, and Ghirahim. You don't want to waste a slot on a one-shot characters who aren't from a franchise known for its rotating protagonists.

Didn't Sakurai mentioned back in his older interviews complaining about Nintendo not making new IPs w/ characters that would fit in Smash Bros.? That's why new IP characters like Wii Fit Trainer and Shulk came into being.

Because Fighting games traditionally involve using your own fists and legs, which is why no one's complaining about it. They're only complaining about too many sword fighters, because they want more diversity in weapons such as mallets, staves, chains, etc.

Centipede Chan August 29th, 2014 9:34 AM

You know what would make me a happy girl? Earthworm Jim as a playable character. But I'd be totally fine with him as an assist trophy or some sort of appearance that isn't just a trophy. I don't know about all of you but Jim is like one cool (groovy) worm to me.

Dragon August 29th, 2014 11:31 AM

Supposedly, this is a leaked image, but:

http://sickr.files.wordpress.com/2014/08/ganondorf_smash_small.png?w=474&h=345

Ganondorf is in, maybe? o: Or is it fake?

Patrick August 29th, 2014 11:52 AM

@DDDchu: Never gonna happen, but I could absolutely get behind that 100%.
@Dragon: from one of the commercials. A slip up on Nintendo's part, but we already knew Falcondorf was in.

Wario got four trophies in Brawl. I'm pretty sure Sakurai's in no rush to add any more acknowledgement characters to his series (a darn shame. I was never in the "Ashley as playable" camp, but the more I think of it, the more I would've wanted it).

Eh, I can't get behind the Shulk hype. The best thing about that trailer was Bowser. It's absolutely a "because I didn't play the games" thing, but even then I never would, because I'm just generally underwhelmed by both castles, swords and dragons/elfin fantasy settings and realistic/anime human based designs, which essentially kills Fire Emblem for me, too. In all my years, I've never been into that. I'm too much of a cartoony sort of guy, and Little Mac happens to just fit that bill, along with Villager and even WFT. I can't even recall if I've ever played a Punch-Out (outside of WW:Mega Microgame$), but I'm pretty sure I remember seeing a friend play it back in the day. Just saying, even characters coming from games I haven't played can still get me excited, but for me it's purely aesthetic.

All the more reason I need someone from Rhythm Heaven, really. I suppose in fairness there's way more cartoony characters than not, hah, I just feel like I could do with a few more creatures in there too. Visual stimulation just by virtue of being non-human helps the roster pop, I think.

ETA: You know what? I hope the WarioWare stage returns in the WiiU version. I'm not done having fun on that stage yet.
