Will 5th gen still be relevant?

While XY doesn't come, I play BW2. I want to fill up the Pokédex in it, but I don't feel motivated with the near release of XY.

After the initial heat with XY calms down, will people still play the Unova games?

Treecko August 9th, 2013 12:51 AM

To be honest, I haven't finished Black 2 and White 2 yet. And I probably will still be playing them when X and Y roll around. I still replay older games all the time too. So yeah it will be relevant in my opinion.

Hikamaru August 9th, 2013 12:57 AM

Even after X and Y come out, I don't want to ditch my DS Lite so I'm still playing my old 5th Gen games on that for sure and use my 3DS XL specifically for X and Y.

WingedDragon August 9th, 2013 1:39 AM

It will be for a while but eventually people will just play X/Y. Competitively I know Gen 5 will be irrelevant to me until I need to get something off of it

Are you sure? I've heard of people who still play 4th gen.

My interest in 5th gen is completing the Pokédex. With everyone playing XY, filling it in older games will be more difficult. I don't do competitive battling (with humans, that is).

Jellicent♀ August 9th, 2013 5:33 AM

As you said, I still play my 4th gen games. I'm playing Platinum atm, even.

I'm sure the Fifth Gen games will still be popular and going on forever, especially as long as Trade Shops and such exist, but it'll definitely lose heat for a while. I'll admit, once XY comes out that's all I'll be focused on playing. c':

But it's certainly a good point. Hopefully people will still be motivated to play and such. c':

I am one of those people. I'm doing a Dragon monotype for absolutely no reason on Platinum right now.

Anyway, I'll still play B2/W2 after the release. I'm even gonna still play D/P/Pt/HG/SS. I hope X and Y won't stop other people from playing older games.

Wiesner August 9th, 2013 7:59 AM

I think so, any true fan won't ditch the older games, if they have any sense about them anyways, lol. But sure I'll still be playing RSE and Platinum for as long as I live, the same goes for BW and BW2.

Iceshadow3317 August 9th, 2013 9:02 AM

I have completed the dex in White 2 so I have no real reason to play it atm. However, I still play HG when I get bored. For a while I will probably only be playing X/Y. If I had my 3rd Gen games still, I would probably be playing them as well.

jfuze174 August 9th, 2013 11:08 AM

It will still be relevant due to it being the most modern even though alot of the pokemon were blahh I still see people using it for transferring pokemon and nostalgia to whoever unova was the first region for they played plus the story for BW and BW2 were well done so that works too

Kikaito plush August 9th, 2013 11:20 AM

Of course I will still play B2/W2 when X/Y comes out as I always play the past game when the game gets boring.

Firox August 9th, 2013 11:28 AM

I will still continue to play my 5th generation Games. I really love Unova, I won't abandon my Pokemon in the earlier generations.

CliCliW August 9th, 2013 12:02 PM

I can't see why 6th gen will affect older gens tbh. I'm playing HG/SS atm and just played Diamond before that. Sure, the older gens might become irrelevant for a while after the XY hurricane, but they'll be played again before long I'm sure :)

Palkia August 10th, 2013 8:52 AM

I probably won't play them any more as I found gen 5 to be my least favourite generation by a long shot. Gen 3 is much more relevant to me than gen 5 could ever hope to be even now, due to how fast those games run and my newly found interest in ROM hacking.

XeroNos August 12th, 2013 11:40 PM

Yes of course, people still play old games like Yellow, Red etc just for fun. So even if there is a dawn of X and Y games arc, people like me will still play old 5th gen games like Black and White. Believe me they are still better in some ways than X and Y

Hainline15 August 13th, 2013 11:11 AM

I doubt it, because along with white 2, ive been playing platinum and leafgreen even, so if you are a true fan, youll probably play older games as well.

blue August 13th, 2013 11:21 AM

I've been occasionally playing White 2 but also switching between Platinum and Soul Silver in the wait for X and Y, but it is a little difficult to get motivated enough to be fully engaged.

PokeChris123 August 13th, 2013 11:46 AM

I think people will still play older generations of Pokemon while X and Y comes out. Although people might spend hours and hours and hours when people who love Pokemon get it, they will eventually go back and play games like Black and Ruby again.

Andrew August 13th, 2013 1:19 PM

Well, to me 5th gen was barely relevant anyway. Really wasn't a fan of them, and I haven't even beaten B2 or W2 yet. However, I'm sure people will continue to play them even after X and Y come out. I mean, I'm still playing RSE, DPPt, and HGSS so 3rd and 4th gen games are still very relevant to those who like them, and I'm sure Gen V will be no different.

Arlo August 13th, 2013 2:12 PM

Obviously it depends on the person.

Some people just blow through the newest games as soon as they come out, then never touch them again and instead just wait for the next gen.

Others play and re-play and re-re-play the games, whatever gen, whatever order, whatever they're in the mood for at the time.

Still others "love" one gen and play it over and over and "hate" another gen and would never even consider playing it, no matter what.

And most are less extreme than any of those - they just play whatever they play whenever they play it.

I'd say that the 5th gen will be as "relevant" as any of the others - some will hate it and never miss an opportunity to complain about it, others will love it and never miss an opportunity to sing its praises, some will replay the games over and over, and others will lose their cartridges and wonder years from now whatever happened to them.

HappyGaylord August 14th, 2013 4:19 AM

For some reason I finished White 2 before White...
For me, those two are games I probably won't re-play. : )

Slvc August 15th, 2013 9:18 PM

The thing about Pokemon games is that they're timeless. Literally. I haven't beaten Black 1 yet, but I plan to, and then Black 2, then hopefully get a job, 3DS and X. I may not beat Black again, but I'll certainly play it to catch other Pokemon. To compare, I played Red and Silver from start to finish over, and over, and over again.

I don't know how many of you have played the original games, but I think the internet killed a certain aspect of Pokemon. It's now very easy to get ANY Pokemon you want through strangers online.. so that kills the "start new game, get different starter" aspect.

tl;dr - I think people will continue to play this generation to catch the Pokemon they haven't before and refresh their memories. A lot of people will buy the 3DS and then have 2 systems so they can trade with themselves.

Fernando Torres August 17th, 2013 6:19 AM

In my opinion 5th gen pokemon are garbage. Literally the garbage pokemon exists. I don't think it will be relevant.. It just seems like they focused more on visuals and less on story line, which really irks me. They are still going the same direction with XY which also hurts me.

Altair August 19th, 2013 12:19 AM

I think all Gens except for the first two would still be relevant provided that transferring from older Gens is supported in these upcoming games. If not then I just won't feel so motivated to play my Gen III, IV and V games... or maybe I will, other players differ I guess.

Precious Tears August 20th, 2013 3:07 PM

While the spotlight will be shifted to Gen VI,
there are still others that will continue to play older games,
especially the games with Wi-Fi compatibility,
as they are able to continue to trade and battle.

There are also players that will replay their own games,
in fact I'm revisiting Sinnoh with my Diamond and Pearl.
I'm close to battling Fantina in both games and wish me luck!

TreeKangaroo August 20th, 2013 4:25 PM

I don't get why people hate on garbodor. Unova is based off of New York so of course there's a ton of garbage bags there! Same with like stray cats, pigeons, and rats running around. Look at Muk he's practically a purple garbodor. Klink I can understand. And I will not play them because I lost them.:P Sucks for me I guess, but I still got my platinum and heart gold version.

Blaziken42205 August 20th, 2013 4:57 PM

I'm sure I'll still play White 2 after I get X or Y even though it'll be on a different system. Heck, I still play Blue and Red on my Gameboy

Azire August 26th, 2013 4:29 AM

I am currently playing Soul Silver and Platinum. I didn't play Gen V until B2W2 came out. I beat Black 2 but still haven't even gotten halfway through White. Gen V is by far the worst in my opinion. After I beat Y I will continue to play the older Gens but Gen V will probably be dead to me. I only get on them now due to the fact they are the most recent. I use Black 2 for storage and both Gen V games to collect Mystery Gifts. I won't need them for either reason come October.

Bounsweet August 26th, 2013 12:17 PM

Gen V isn't even relevant now. I've seen more people restart older games during this generation than I have before. I think gen V will pretty much be forgotten once X and Y are released.

Pendraflare August 26th, 2013 1:11 PM

I don't know about these guys, but i'll always like Gen V, just like I do every other. As people have said, there are those that still play the older generations and they're discussed commonly, so yes, i'm sure it will still be relevant.

Aeroblast August 26th, 2013 1:48 PM

Every competitive battler will flock over to X&Y. In that sense, Gen V won't be much relevant.

Yeah but competitive battlers are the minority among Pokémon players. It's a given that competitive battling moves to the latest game, but there are still people who play the older games regardless.

Actually, even that scene doesn't have a direction yet. Most of the competitive battlers hack their Pokémon, and this isn't possible in the 3DS. And Smogon no longer has the head start they once did when they could test the moves and abilities in the Japanese version and port them to their simulator. It will be an era of discovery and everyone will start from zero when the games are released. Of course, hacked Pokémon could still be transferred from earlier games, but at least the new Pokémon won't be able to be hacked.

Shrew August 26th, 2013 3:52 PM

I see a lot of people playing games from all generations for nuzlockes, and I think Black/White will not be an exception. There are many pokemon fans who do not plan to buy a 3DS for XY or who dislike the look of 3D compared to sprites. These will give reasons for people to still play Gen V.

Tsutarja August 26th, 2013 5:11 PM

I wouldn't quite say it would be irrelevant once the release of the 6th generation comes out, but I understand that it will be more deprecated along the way (my example being how the Dream World will no longer be accessible).

Hiatus August 29th, 2013 3:06 PM

Generation four has lost most of its relevancy few months after the fifth gen. games were released, so I think generation five will most likely go through the same thing. I haven't completed Pokémon Black 2 or White 2 yet, though, so there's a slight chance that I'll still play one of these games when Pokémon X and Y are released.

JorgeAamelo August 29th, 2013 5:14 PM

I think the 5th Generation will just low it's popularity in the online tools, as even today its already hard to find a battle sometimes (or maybe it's just me) but as for the games, I believe that they will probably still be played by a part of the Pokémon Fans, as it was actually an important gen with all the new features it bought as well as the first actual sequel games to the originals, its probably, in my opinion, the most story-deep pokémon games so far and should definitely still be played.

In my own regret I have to admit that I have basically "ditched" the Pokémon Franchise for quite a while, and haven't shown a single interest to my either 4th Generation or 5th Generation Games and as well as the impact of Pokémon had on me, but I believe the day where I pick my old games again and starting play them again that the whole magic will come back, and that day won't take long to happen.

EJ Nero August 30th, 2013 6:22 PM

I think for those who enjoy playing previous gens, and collecting pokemon from them gen 5 will always be relevant. But of course it will lose its popularity in comparison to the newer gen as they all have before. I will still be playing Black/Black 2 though. I haven't even bought Black 2 yet, and am still on Black (post-Elite Four). I want to play it before I buy Y.

Darkendra August 30th, 2013 7:23 PM

Once Gen VI comes out Gen V will of course be obsolete.
Why else would they just take all those wonderful things from the GTS?
Why else would they not try to make enough room or even have a separate server specifically for Pokemon X and Pokemon Y?
After X & Y come out most people playing B/W or B2/W2 will be bored out of their minds.
I for one have already gotten all 649 in the Pokedex.

PkmnTrainerElio August 30th, 2013 8:15 PM

This is what annoyed me, how long did Gen 4 go? 2006-2010 (Japan)/2007-2011 (Rest of the world), previous Generations went for the same amount of time or a bit shorter, Gen V was the shortest yet, spanning three years in Japan and two and a half in the rest of the world. To Nintendo, it won't be relevant, but to us, it will be...

mozartm99 August 30th, 2013 9:18 PM

I think it will. I am still playing through Pearl cause I've never actually beat it :p

Zebz213 August 31st, 2013 10:16 AM

Gen VI will probably be the most played after it is released, but people are still going to do various challenging runs on Gen V and as long as Trade Shops exist, Gen V will always be relevant.

Blues7 September 20th, 2013 2:59 PM

Well, you can at least count us in.
I don't have enough money to buy a 3DS yet, so I'll stick with BW2 for another year maybe haha...
peace!

CoffeeDrink October 8th, 2013 11:05 PM

I believe they are still relevant, koff~

Keep in mind that the new Pokemon Bank can transfer Pokemon from Pokemon Versions Black and White without much hassle. This gives it the opportunity to continue being relevant in the eyes of many. Some people still play old arcade games (myself included) so I can hardly believe Pokemon that are prevalent in certain regions to become obsolete. Big note: Pokemon Versions Black and White are the only way to bring your Gameboy Advance Pokemon with you to Pokemon Versions X & Y. Think about that, koffi~

Sirfetch’d October 8th, 2013 11:41 PM

I think people will always play 5th gen games and honestly, no generation goes completely irrelevant. For example, people still play the original games even all of these years later so I fully expect 5th gen games to be played and widely popular as well.

Colress Machine October 9th, 2013 4:52 AM

I sure hope so because Gen 5 is my favorite Generation (Despite my hype for G6). I'm sure it'll still be relevant. It may be seen as special because it is the last Pokémon game for the DS which is pretty bittersweet in my opinion. I know I'm going to be playing them for a while. c:

Whitney's Shaymin October 9th, 2013 4:53 AM

When Black/White came out there was a lot of hype but people still played 4th gen games. It will be the same thing!

Zorogami October 9th, 2013 5:05 AM

Of course as soon as x/y come out the 5th gen is going to be left aside for a while, but as many have said before me, no generation goes forgotten, and of course people will keep plying BW/BW2, me included. Heck, i still play Red and Blue from time to time!

kay3o October 9th, 2013 9:28 AM

I personally haven't finished White 2 yet, I'm right at the Elite Four too..

I'm just so hyped for X & Y haha.

Xander Olivieri October 9th, 2013 1:29 PM

Considerning people can't RNG as successfully on a 3DS or even the 3DS games, 5th Gen games will still be relevant for breeding perfect IV Pokemon. The attacks may be out of date, but breeding for those perfect IVs then transferring the babies over to Gen 6 will make Gen 5 a must keep for some players.

Meganium October 12th, 2013 9:03 PM

I'm still hyped about XY, but with that, I've prompted myself to play White 2 while I wait to buy my own copy. For nostalgia purposes, I'll still play Unova, but I have to remember the fact that 5th Gen gameplay will never be the same as 6th Gen gameplay and everything will be so much different in terms of competitiveness.
