I don't think PHP is a necessarily bad language to use when it comes to website functionality, but for an IRC bot, why? You're right that Python is a better language to use than PHP for an IRC bot, but I guess if PHP will work, then why not? Coder's preference.

Part of the fun is probably how you can make something do something you want even when your tools aren't exactly suited for the job. :)

I really should start pondering about some programming practice.

Office 365 subscription expiration on my personal account:
Ability to still use Office 365 through my school:
No more Terabyte space in OneDrive:

Of course for OneDrive, I don't even have a full gigabyte of my available 30GB used up! :P

I have about 9GB in use despite having over 1.1TB available for use.

That's probably how they get away with offering 1TB (or more) of storage, is that not everyone uses that much space.

Tsutarja January 7th, 2015 8:34 AM

At least I have 30 GB to spare on OneDrive...more space there than my 4.4GB available on Dropbox. :P

And in other news, I thank Cortana on my phone for alerting me to that Wind Chill Advisory. Pretty fun sometimes to be woken up to a vibrating phone alerting you on weather advisories.

That reminded me that I do actually have a OneDrive I don't use. And that I also have a copy of Office 2010 Pro that I rarely use on my home PC. It'd be nice to have a OneDrive app for Android, but I know that probably won't happen anytime soon. Which suits me just fine since I do still have 15GB of Google Drive space at my disposal.

There is a OneDrive App for Android (and iOS too)

Does that require paying Microsoft to be of any use? I actually haven't looked into a OneDrive app for my phone in over a year due to initial experiences with attempting to find one and earlier attempts to sync my hotmail to my phone.

Here's the official OneDrive app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.microsoft.skydrive&hl=en

It's free to use, and actually quite good. I've used it a few times between all of my devices.

donavannj January 7th, 2015 9:24 PM

I may have to install that on my Xperia. Which is positively huge, by the way. Got moved over to it today. Any apps I should add to it that I may not have considered when my Alcatel OneTouch Fierce was my primary phone?

donavannj January 7th, 2015 9:53 PM

I have had no such issues with my Alcatel that couldn't be fixed by a manual reboot.

I just upgraded because I'm now on my employer's plan. The Alcatel actually still has 3 months of warranty left on it.

Buoysel January 8th, 2015 7:05 AM

The reason I left Android, despite really likeing the hardware was the random reboots / freezes. One night my phone froze, in the morning it did't play my alarm and I was late to work. :(

That right there is a good convincing factor for me to not use Android as a primary device. :|

Although I use my iPod Touch for an alarm and my phone runs Windows Phone 8.1.

donavannj January 8th, 2015 8:19 AM

I only ever had that random shutdown and reboot issue on my first HTC Sensation (though I had come close on the other two of that phone that I had; it was a known issue with those devices). First one was replaced due to firmware issues causing issues with the device staying on. Second one was replaced because I broke the pins inside the mini USB plug on the phone. Third one was replaced with my Alcatel because it fell from my standing desk. I had far fewer issues with the HTC G2 and the Alcatel OneTouch than I did with the Sensation in terms of crashes and random reboots. I have yet to experience a total freeze. Actually, I guess you could call what happened to my G2 a total freeze, but that was probably caused by damage from sweat from having it in my pocket while working a labor-intensive job (screen went completely white and the device was unresponsive when I pulled it out to turn it on and use it while on a break during a particularly labor-intensive shift).

I've actually seen random shutdowns more often on iPhones than I have Android devices, though that's probably just the quantity of iPhones I support at work more than anything.

I don't use my phone as my primary alarm, though. That belongs to an actual digital alarm clock that I've had for at least 16 years. My phone is and has always been my backup alarm since I first got one. And I've got a pair of spare alarm clocks stashed away for whenever my current digital one gives out, which may just be never.

Really, you should never depend on your phone to be your primary alarm. The random crashes can happen on any smartphone, and I have definitely seen it on iPhones (not on Windows Phones, but nobody at my work uses them and nobody I know has one). Plus, a phone alarm is nowhere near as disruptive as the alarm on an alarm clock, at least in my personal opinion and experiences.

Pendraflare January 8th, 2015 9:21 AM

I don't end up using alarms often nowadays, there was even a point late last year when I got iPhone/iPod speakers from my college's bookstore but never opened them and eventually returned them because I came to find out that they weren't very necessary when I have a computer that I can play music on instead. But I remember way back when I used to have an alarm clock that would play really annoying sounds :P

And speaking of the HTC Sensation, I'm in the process of trying to install CyanogenMod 11 on a friend's phone to bring it somewhat up to date. But damn they make those phones hard to mod. You first have to unlock the bootloader, then do a temporary physical modification to allow Recovery to write to the /boot partition of the device.

At least you can get as far as unlocking the bootloader on that device :P on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 4, it's impossible to unlock it. At least you can get TWRP onto it.

donavannj January 9th, 2015 3:20 PM

I'm curious as to whether your friend has the firmware-caused battery issues that I encountered with my Sensation phones.

Periodic random shutdowns and reboots and increasingly inaccurate reporting battery charge level as time wears on. It starts pretty slow at first, but it gradually cascades into a point where it makes the phone unusable if you don't recognize the symptoms early enough. It's a known issue with the Sensation.

I can't get a custom rom on my phone cause every Galaxy Core rom is for the Duos version and the kernels are different. And seriously look at this, compared to touch-wiz its amazing:

Why can't I have nice things? :(

Legendary Silke January 11th, 2015 6:30 AM

Remember old Nokia phones that technically never shut themselves down fully and still rang alarms even if off? So long as there's a battery and there's some charge on it, it's guaranteed to ring. Loudly.

I still have a Nokia phone, but it's a smartphone, and a modern one, to boot. Usually I never manage to get it run to 0% charge, so it's not a problem for me, and the alarm is loud enough. I do wonder if it can still ring while turned off, though. (Ringing while turned off is a possibility with Symbian-based OSes.)

Tsutarja January 11th, 2015 9:08 AM

Hmm, I definitely think that my tablet is definitely better with Internet Explorer than it is Google Chrome. 😉

Pendraflare January 11th, 2015 5:15 PM

I still prefer Safari on my Mac over Google Chrome, as i'm more used to it.

Also, I just installed the newest OS upgrade for my Mac, and despite an excruciatingly long download process, they actually refined everything quite well for it. Now if only it would stop being as slow as molasses...

Tsutarja January 11th, 2015 5:22 PM

How old is your Mac? If it's one that came installed with Snow Leopard, then that's kinda old at this point. :P

Apple logic: they'll support upgrades on old devices for quite a long time, but still increase hardware requirements.

Kyoe January 11th, 2015 5:53 PM

Ew, Apple.

Personally I prefer Windows/Android. Never had many good experiences with Apple/iOS. Not even to mention that PC and Android tend to be more developer friendly then Apple, which always wins points with me. Let's not open that can of worms, though!

I have seriously never used the alarm on my phone or tablet... I tried once, and it didn't even work. Can't say I'm surprised. xD

I got mine for Christmas 2012 (a few days before then), and I just installed I think Mac OS Yosemite because I had to check for updates after moving back into my college dorm. So just over two years. Not terribly old. I even dug out my iPad 2 that i've had since mid-2011 so I could play something for the Year of Gaming event, and it still supported iOS 8.
