Rain, Hail, Sand, and Sun!
Weather teams are becoming more and more prominent and this is because in gen 5 Dream World abilities were introduced that gave more Pokemon access to instant weather. Currently there are 4 types of weather conditions and certain Pokemon have the ability to make those conditions instantly appear permanently.
What is your opinion on these instant weather abilities? How often do you use them in competitive play? Were these abilities detrimental to competitive play? Do you feel that they are too common? Discuss |
Come on mega Castform...
I enjoy weather teams since they always add an interesting dynamic to a battle and I don't mind the instant weather abilities. I don't feel at all like they're over-run and I've never found a weather team but harder to beat than a standard team because the Pokémon using the weather are (often, not always) a fair bit worse than the Pokémon making up a regular mixed team. I'd say instant weather is certainly an OU-worthy ability, but I don't think it's overpowered. The only slight exception could be Rain as it's easy to build even a mixed team that takes great advantage of Drizzle, but it's not often used so it's not a huge problem. |
I really think Drizzle and Drought should have been banned from OU from the start. We wouldn't have had Aldaron's Proposal implemented, Manaphy, Excadrill and Tornadus-T would have never been banned, Jirachi would be much less common, and so on.
I think sand is the best weather in OU, with rain coming close. Tyranitar is actually a great Pokemon and Pokemon like Stoutland and Landorus become absolute monsters(and this is why Lando got banned, and the same could be said about Garchomp in BW1). Hippowdon is also good because it has awesome physical bulk and can set up Stealth Rock with ease. Meanwhile, Politoed would probably be PU if it weren't for Drizzle. However, rain shouldn't be underestimated because it powers up many Pokemon, like Ferrothorn. |
I actually think that sand teams are underrated, tbh. You see so many more sun and rain teams because of the boosts that come with them, but people seem to ignore the fact that sand teams have their advantages as well. Not to mention the two Pokemon that have access to Sandstream in OU are realllly good Pokemon, unlike Politoed and Ninetales who are just ok Pokemon and would dwell in NU if it weren't for their abilities.

Weather adds a whole lot to the meatgame and can be a very powerful tool if used correctly. Weather is also one thing that can make monotype teams very difficult to deal with. However, I've seen several fire and water teams skipping over their perma-weather counterpart. Water I can understand as I could see them wanting to abuse swift swim and rain dance, but I don't understand to fire teams without Ninetales. Maybe it has something to do with the perma-weather starters being not too powerful.

In my opinion sandstorm is the best weather right now in ou. Mainly because it gives tyranitar amazing special defense capabilities also the abilities that can be abused with this weather.
I like drizzle but only in ubers and i like rain dance+damp rock better in ou. Since drizzle+swift swim is banned and plus you can use a better mon to abuse the rain than politoed. but still rain is still useful since it gives grass mons a advantage by weakening fire attacks. To be honest sun teams are what are amazingly op right now. with physical attackers like darmanitan that can abuse the sun and ninetales which itself is not a bad mon. venusaur is a giant thread that i think everyone should have something in their team to counter it. I try to always put a weather mon on my team since it's oh so common now a days and i need to counter it by changing the weather and hopefully deactivating abilities like chlorophyll, swift swim or sand rush. |
Sandstorm definitely is the best weather. To me at least. A lot of powerful pokemon get sand rush or one of the similar abilities and can easily sweep teams given the support.
I feel that if in generation six they decide to put Cloud Nine (that's the one that negates weather right?) on a powerful pokemon, that pokemon would easily soar into teams looking to counteract weather. Sorry Golduck, you're just not powerful enough. |

They are quite common and I seem to use my sandstorm team more often then not right now so I would say that people using weather teams have good reason to use those types of teams, but that's just my opinion.

Hail is very underrated and needs more usage. Kyurem is a lethal Choice Scarf user in hail with Blizzard, Draco Meteor, Earth Power and Focus Miss.
