do you teach HMs to Legendary Pokèmon?

Some people are against the idea of teaching a Legendary Pokèmon an HM. Do you teach Legendary Pokémon HMs? If so, what Legendary Pokèmon do you teach what HM???

I always teach Moltres 'Fly' , I teach Lugia and Latios 'Surf' sometimes I teach Mewtwo 'Strength'

Altair August 20th, 2013 12:37 PM

On the rare occasion a legendary is on my in-game team I'll teach it a HM if I need to. In Emerald I used a Kyogre with Surf and Waterfall. In Platinum I taught Giratina Fly. In Black I had Reshiram know Fly as well.
I'd avoid teaching the weak HM's to legendary Pokemon such as Cut and Rock Smash.

Sirfetch’d August 20th, 2013 12:42 PM

I remember teaching the birds of Kanto Fly as well as Ho-oh. I also taught Kyogre and Latios Surf. Other than that I usually just use my HM slaves for HM moves.

Emburn August 20th, 2013 12:46 PM

Since Rayquaza already knows fly, that's a given. However, I taught Kyogre surf and I teach legendary fly because what's cooler than riding on a legendary?

d August 20th, 2013 12:54 PM

Not really. I usually send the legendary pokemon to my box immideately, so I never thought about using them for HM's.

Aeroblast August 20th, 2013 1:00 PM

Surf is useful, Waterfall possibly after Gen IV, Fly is alright, Strength is mediocre at absolute best, but others like Cut and Rock smash should be avoided at all costs.

Turnip August 20th, 2013 1:26 PM

Seems like a lot of the same for everyone - essentially, just Surf and Fly.

Sheep August 20th, 2013 2:00 PM

Sometimes yeah. I don't see the big deal since I can easily delete them later.. so unless they already have a pool of four good moves, I'd probably teach 'em if I had one in my party and didn't want to waste the slot of an official party member.

Amore August 20th, 2013 2:29 PM

Occassionally - when I use a legendary pokémon in my team, its not exempt. Manaphy currently has Surf, but also uses Waterfall when required. Rayquaza actually comes with Fly as standard. But I'm pretty sure I ended up with a team on Black where Reshiram learnt Cut as it was the only one capable of it too.

I'm against the idea that Pokémon have to be taught any particular moves. You can teach your Pokémon whatever moves you like to fit your own strategy. If we all played the games the same way it would be a really boring world.

alisaie August 20th, 2013 3:38 PM

I think the only legendary that I have ever taught an HM to was Suicune when I had it on my team in Crystal. I had taught it Surf then I preferred the reliability of surf than Hydro Pump then (and still kind of do at times). But other than that I've never really taught one an HM because I had other Pokemon to teach them to.

Hikamaru August 20th, 2013 3:59 PM

I don't really teach HMs to Legendaries since I hardly even use them, but I may give Surf to a Water-type Legendary since it's always a great move to have on your Water Pokemon.

TreeKangaroo August 20th, 2013 4:17 PM

I teach all of them to mew, the crappy ones like defog for example and whirlpool.

Hiatus August 20th, 2013 4:57 PM

I don't usually teach HMs to legendaries. To me, legendary Pokémon are like trophies... things that you safely keep in your trophy case, haha. xD Articuno in Pokémon FireRed was the only legendary Pokémon that I thought an HM to. At the time, Articuno was the only flying-type Pokémon I had, and I needed someone to use Fly for me.

lmcde22 August 20th, 2013 8:39 PM

Rayquaza already has Fly so I just leave it :) and also Latios with Surf is pretty sick. I dont count Surf as one of the sh*tty HM moves. It is actually so good in battle. Strong and accurate. What more could you ask for?

Satoshi Ookami August 20th, 2013 11:54 PM

Pretty much Surf is the only option. Latias or any special oriented legendary gets it.
I also taught Genesect Fly to have flier.

Kikaito plush August 20th, 2013 11:57 PM

I taught my Zapdos fly and that is about it as I do not like teaching legends HMs.

curiousnathan August 20th, 2013 11:58 PM

I don't teach any of my legendary Pokemon HMs.

Kyrul August 21st, 2013 12:39 AM

I taught my Lugia how to whirpool back before the other HMs decided that whirpool ain't cool enough to be with them anymore. Don't know why, I just did.

Synerjee August 21st, 2013 1:01 AM

Only Surf for Lugia to replace Hydro Pump. I wanted to use Lugia as a team member once, but decided against it in the end.

«Chuckles» August 21st, 2013 1:15 AM

I use surf alot on legendaries since it is the strongest water move or equal to hydro pump so it has more PP for the same power what can go wrong

Ahri August 21st, 2013 1:27 AM

I don't even catch Legendaries unless I have to .-.(because I mostly do challenges and got no time to waste on Legends hunting xD)
So the answer would be no.

Pendraflare August 21st, 2013 10:12 AM

No, I usually just use derps like Bidoof, Pidgey and Rattata for HMs. And sometimes Marill.

I like the designs of most legendaries, sometimes I use them others I don't.

Boilurn August 21st, 2013 11:20 AM

I don't usually teach HMs to legendaries, especially when you realize that there's only one of each legendary Pokemon in the universe. I feel that it's better to make use of other reliable moves without having to change your mind. At one point I did however teach Thundurus to Fly because it was the most powerful STAB Flying-type move for use on the Battle Subway. Other than that, I'd just use my HM slaves.

Shrew August 21st, 2013 5:15 PM

Just my Mew. I use her as an HM Hero. (Or slave, as many call them.)

I've seen scumbag memes for using Mew in this way, but think about it: you can't get it until after story mode, practically all post-story modes ban it (such as the battle facilities), and competitive has deemed it as an unfair uber (until recently.) By keeping Mew this way, I can actually use it in my party more frequently than I would if I trained it, only for me to never use it.
