Poochyena: Good or Bad?

Ok so I'm not sure if it's meant to be here but...

Did any of you catch Poochyena at the start of the game and did you think it was any good I just started a game and caught one because it's my favorite Pokemon but it's not very good in battle yet :/

What do you think? :D

TeKan56 August 29th, 2013 4:24 AM

Mighteyena is decent but Absol outclasses it. But it's alright for the beginning because it learns Bite at 13(I think) and it can be useful against Roxanne but completely useless against Brawley.

Hufen iâ August 29th, 2013 4:33 AM

It does learn Shadow Ball via TM later on and Ghost Moves are Physical in Gen III so that makes it a lot more useful :D

Lucky1Yena August 29th, 2013 4:58 AM

It was a Mightyena that saved me from Tate and Liza, so I think it's pretty good. Still, I think it should have another evolution stage. And as a Poochyena it's kinda weak, but that adds to the challenge.

Precious Tears August 29th, 2013 5:47 AM

You may use Poochyena > Mightyena then switch it to Absol, upon reaching Fortree. ;)

Leave the Shadow Ball to Absol if you're gonna use him as Mightyena's replacement!

Hiatus August 29th, 2013 7:24 AM

I love Poochyena. It's a very cute-looking Pokémon. I caught one of these at the beginning of Pokémon Ruby, and surprisingly, it ended up helping me in my journey more than I expected. When it evolved into Mightyena, it was able to take down a couple of gym leaders completely by itself (Watson and Flannery). It was also able to defeat one of the Elite Four members, but I just don't remember who, exactly~

Sydian August 29th, 2013 8:02 AM

In gen III, it's not something I recommend. Takes a while to get Poochyena to be decent in battle and then when you do evolve it, you don't have this plethora of Dark moves for Mightyena to make use of. Shadow Ball is better to use, and even then, you don't get STAB. But at least it's physical. Dark was still special at the time, which Poochyena's line doesn't really have much of. I like them both design wise though, especially Poochyena. So cute.

I still use them, though. I tend to go by Pokemon I want to use rather than what's the strongest.

PhoenixWright77 August 29th, 2013 8:27 AM

I remember using him on my first run of Pokemon Ruby. My friends and I thought he was the coolest pokemon around and everyone had to use him or they were not cool enough.

All in all, Poochyena and it's evolution are decent Pokemon to use but there are other better dark types such as Absol.

TeKan56 August 29th, 2013 9:40 AM

If you haven't reached someplace far, I suggest you play the game again but this time it's Physical/Special Plot version. That way, Mightyena could very well be a beast.

XeroNos August 31st, 2013 12:48 AM

I did not bothered to even catch it. Yes, some can say it's design is cool but in game play , It has weak moves

Aslan August 31st, 2013 2:34 AM

Mightyena is one of those Pokemon that can cope fairly well early in the game but gets heavily outclassed towards the end. I mean it was one of the stronger Pokemon at the start alongside Beautifly but that was probably because they evolved early, had pretty good moves and there weren't many things that could stand in their way. As the game progresses on however, stronger and better Pokemon are introduced. There are floods of all sorts of Pokemon and pretty much all of them have better stats. Mightyena has tough competition and I'd only recommend it for early-game use. Anything after that and it'd probably fall behind.

Generally though its outclassed by better dark-types. Absol is a good example and while Intimidate certainly comes in handy, you've got cactuses and sharks and wolf cats that can all do so much more. Its design is really cool but overall not a Pokemon that I'd find myself using any time soon. ):

pokemasta92 August 31st, 2013 3:19 AM

Mightyena is awesome! Maybe not for competitive battling, but for the game it's great. Any Pokémon that is trained well and has good moves can get through the games with ease. I pick all of my Pokémon based on looks, not power.

Elaitenstile August 31st, 2013 4:22 AM

Poochyena isn't anywhere near my long lists of party choices in RSE, but I did train one once. On account of Poochey being so cute and the striking resemblance to a dog-wolf, I think it's a really nice critter. Anyone who "takes the Pokémon he likes" wouldn't be at all disappointed if he took Poochyena.

Aeroblast August 31st, 2013 8:15 AM

Poochyena and Mightyena are one of those annoying Pokemon that every other grunt in the game has. If you ask any Soft Resetter about Poochyena they'll hate it because of that uncatchable shiny.

Amore August 31st, 2013 2:22 PM

I love Poochyena / Mightyena! I always dismissed them because Team Aqua/Magma used them, but they're surprisingly good. As people said, they're sometimes a little outclassed late-game. However, Intimidate is an amazing ability to have in-game (my Luxray's Intimidate on Garchomp in Diamond is the only reason I beat the Champion) in any generation. Plus, it gets Shadow Ball as a tm, and Dig and Double-Edge to round out its physical moves.

Sheep August 31st, 2013 2:33 PM

I caught and used it, yeah! But don't know how long it stayed on my team. Once I completed the story I got another Poochyena and trained it up until it was in its 70s. Not the strongest Pokemon but awesome design-wise. ^^

Altair September 2nd, 2013 5:13 PM

My first run through Ruby, it was the first Pokemon I caught. It was much more interesting than Sentret or Rattata! I used it throughout the whole game, no problems at all.

Peaverin September 3rd, 2013 3:02 PM

I remember I caught it just because it was like a dark dog, and at that times I used to love the dark type. I used it to fight until I discovered Houndour at the Safari Zone. That Houndour replaced my Poochyena, just because I liked it more. Poor Poochyena:(

Magic Magikarp September 4th, 2013 3:01 PM

I know its been said before but stick with an Absol, I did not even bother with Mightyena and I just stuck with an Absol. Looks cool but sadly dark is special attack in gen 3, so I just taught him Hyper Beam, Iron Tail, Return and Swords Dance. Good luck if you go with your Poochyena though.

flufflepuff September 4th, 2013 3:24 PM

Eh, Poochyena's pretty weak. Lots of trainers might of caught it as their first captured Pokémon, but after a while it usually ends up in your pc or the back of your party.

Clawvile September 4th, 2013 4:10 PM

Poochyena doesn't excactly have much of a wide movepool IMO, i'd rather snag myself and absol than a Poochyena.(Which I did.)

Ari Niko September 28th, 2013 9:06 PM

Yea I caught one early on on my first playthrough. I ditched it once I got a Houndour, though.

Negix October 1st, 2013 6:50 AM

I once had a poochyena when I started my game. But I ended up switching him for something better like Absol.

MiniMinun October 3rd, 2013 12:19 PM

I don't know about battling with it too too much, but Poochyena will always be one of my favs. If we lived in the pokemon world, it would be my Pikachu.

DynamicD October 3rd, 2013 5:00 PM

I think it's a pretty good dark type you can get early on, at least until level 30. You might want to get some TMs, because it's move pools is pretty poor. I wouldn't say it's an amazing dark type, but it's good to use at least until level 30.

wertcraft October 3rd, 2013 5:05 PM

to be honest l liked absol more.

mrpokemonxy October 20th, 2013 4:58 PM

For me I think it's terrible but in early game you can use it as a hm slave for a couple of the hm's.

AluminiumOxide October 30th, 2013 4:57 AM

Look Poochyena is one of the weak Pokemon okay :) But i am not being mean ;p just telling and yeah some time Poocyena look cute dog for me but when i saw it with some Grunts it feel me like a crazzy dog :) But i kinda like it but catching it and Raising it and evolving Mightyena maybe can help you but its not good as you started newly, It faint too fast and it doesn't had a very good attack or defense so it faint soon and i didn't even get a Opportunity to evolve it. And sorry but it not gonna help you much more in E4 And gyms after 5 or 4 and i suggest you, you better Alter it with a other Pokemon Linking trade can help you ;p and if you think its good so the choice is your you can beat some gyms and trainer but it goes Usefulness some time later. Sorry but that's the truth don't think i am trying to be mean.

lmcde22 October 30th, 2013 3:59 PM

Nah I never used it that much. I would catch an Absol after Fortree and use that to take down Tate and Liza. Couldn't justify how long it took to make him battle ready, only for him to be useless agains Brawly and next to useless against Wattson too. I would rather be training a Psychic type at that point in the game, Abra or Ralts. They are more helpful in the long term (Except the E4 in Sapphire seems like it was specifically designed to hate on Psychic-type)

Pilkie October 30th, 2013 4:25 PM

It's an alright early game Pokémon, but it might be smart to switch it out for an Absol in Fortree. I used a Mightyena to go through the E4, but it could have been a lot easier if I had a stronger Pokémon (like Absol, for example) in that slot. A strong ghost type Like Gengar can also be useful if you want a good Dark move user. Ghost Pokémon are generally pretty helpful late game, especially in the Gen III elite 4.
