I have been talking about Orotto being super effective in the the trailer as well. So I am with you. However let me point out something that someone pointed out to me, there is a Sudowoodo in that same battle and looks like it takes the same amount of damage. Sudowoodo is a rock type, yet he took the same damage at Orotto took. But if Orotto was part rock and grass, it should that taken more damage than Sudowoodo right? I myself thought right away that it was part grass, but that was because I didn't notice the Sudowoodo. However, there was a 2nd trailer, a bit different from this one, that shows Mega Blaziken going against a level 100 Orotto alone. Blaziken used Blaze Kick, and did a good amount of damage. However, they changed the video before you could hear the sound to indicate if it was super, normal, or not very effective. |

Also damn Pokemon music going the way of F-Zero GX with that second part. what's up with that pikachu bias? He's the only one with a proper cry! |

To me it looked like they were losing hp at the same pace...if Oorotto is an evolution of Sudowoodo it's special defenses and hp proably didn't change...
|
idk I kind of poked through it frame-by-frame and it looks as if Sudowoodo took less of a percentage of damage? it's more a typing speculation really- if Orotto is grass/rock as opposed to Sudowoodo's pure rock, then the percentage of damage lost would change even if stats did not, correct?
|
You are right about one being previously damaged, but I think that was the last pokemon on the left which I think was a Oorotto. The Sudowoodo was next to it which had full health.
|
nah here look at the names it was sudowoodo
http://24.media.tumblr.com/2c31b3180bc3a6f6670533955444ac7b/tumblr_mtcyda7HSN1rqyevyo1_r1_1280.png there's the before and after too, or as close as I can get it. sudo def took less damage percentage-wise. since they're all apparently the same level, that indicates either significant stat differences or type difference. |
Ah ok, I was getting the names confused... Let's see...
The Oorottos all take about the same damage and it looks like Sudowoodo took less. It looks like it was a super effective hit on the Orottos, so I think that cancels out the rock typing. You are also right that Hordes mainly show up in families. It could be a alt evo of Bonsly and not Sudowoodo. I also think we will get a pre evo of Miltank and Tauros still. Which would be why they are in a horde battle together. Miltank and Tarous are basically counterparts of one another, not officially though. In the second video, there is also a sudowoodo in it. But it doesn't look like it does much damage to either one. Ok so the 2nd isn't showing up now. The 2nd trailer I saw had 4 Orottos and a Sudowoodo against a Helioptile, but now the part I saw isn't showing in the video unless it is a different video. |
I do hope we get a Tauros/Miltank pre-evo that'd be great :D
I've also seen it suggested that Sudowoodo was just hanging around mimicking trees. I don't know which idea I like better. I honestly adore Sudowoodo as it is and don't really like Orotto as an evolution for it, but it seems pretty plausible. I can see perhaps a night/day split evo family from Bonsly. But it's just really funny for Sudowoodo to be chillin' pretending to be a tree with a bunch of Orotto. The image makes me really happy. I'm sure I won't be as happy when I can't sweep a horde because of it though. ( ̄▽ ̄;) |
These screenshots are from the same trailer as Anna's however, I got it down to the very last click to show just how much damage is dealt to Oorotto.
Before Attack: http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa278/iceman3317/Pokemon/Capture1.png After Attack: http://i199.photobucket.com/albums/aa278/iceman3317/Pokemon/Capture2.png This may prove that he is at least Grass, Steel, Ice or Bug Type ( I doubt Ice and Steel) with as much damage as they took even with Flareon being Lv 50. Also he takes damage from a Helioptile electric attack in an earlier trailer, I think I wish I could find the video again, so he is not a ground type. |
I don't think Hordes have anything to do with family. I mean officially, Miltank and Tauros aren't recognized as a family or even completely recognized as counterparts. Unlike the other gender paired counterparts who are part of the same family, they cannot breed the other version.
If they make a pre evolution for them, its long overdue considering what I said before. This would only be if they recognize Miltank and Tauros as a pair after all this time. I almost can't see it being done with the severe lack of real add ons to pre-existing Pokemon that we've been getting. It would be a very well welcomed addition. |
Orotto could still be part rock tbh- all we know is that he takes more damage from a fire attack than a pure rock type. Because rock/grass Pokémon takes normal damage from fire, yeah? All we do know for sure is that he isn't ground, due to Helioptile.
idk even if they aren't getting a tie-in pre-evo they're still recognized essentially as counterparts and do share the same habitat and behaviours. Like the Nido families, kind of. I would imagine various Nido evolutions and genders would be in the same horde. idk I just haven't seen any hordes that have unrelated 'mon in them. You'd think we'd see that rather than just five of the same family, even just once for a second. |
Perhaps hordes will be based on species (as in what they're based on not Pokémon "species")? Like the bolvines (T & M) and the trees (O & S) rather than actual relation.
|
@Iceman That Flareon's level 50 though, compared to their 25. And I don't know what it was using, but I can safely assume it was a fairly high-powered move. Probably special atk, considering what was done to Sudowoodo at 0.5x damage. So I think that's fair for normal effectiveness.
@Magmaruby Oh that's a good point. Species and habitat, kind of? Like you could end up with... Piscine, Bovine, Deep-Sea, Tree, Canine... and have an odd assortment of whatever fits the bill? That'd be fun. |
I guess it still could be part rock. Flareon was Lv 50 and the Horde was Lv 25s. I will delete that part of my previous post because I did not notice Flareon was Lv 50. I think we can say that it is at least Grass or bug, Because it did too much damage if it was pure rock unless it just has terrible stats like you have said.

I dunno. I can see us getting a mixture of a few birds and plants in a battle while in a forest. I don't think we've been given the full extent to either Horde and Sky Battles as we don't know how they are even conducted. The choices of Pokemon they have used seem to be more coincidence so far, as there would at least have to have a third or fourth showing for it to break coincidence so far. There are two more pairs that they could show.
I don't think they're showing us any more than what they want us to think only to reveal everything later and as things have happened before, it usually turns around and pulls a 180 on us. |
I want to believe that Oorotto is unrelated to Sudowoodo, but one fact remains that makes me think differently: it hasn't been officially revealed like the others. The only reason I've seen Gamefreak delay a reveal is because its something big- like Sylveons typing for example. Now, I know that Bonsly and Sudowoodo are based on dead, petrified wood so what I think Oorotto might be is the Shedinja to Bonsly/Sudowoodo. And if that is the case, I'm going to speculate that it is Ghost/Grass- being that it's the spirit/shell of the plant Bonsly/Sudowoodo once was.

Bonsai also look fake. Their leaves have a sheen that makes them almost look plastic and the bark that surrounds the plant doesn't look real either until you actually touch the plant. Bonsley is more plant based than its evolution who simply mimics trees, but Bonsley is based off of a living plant. As for Orotto's reveal, I don't think there is anything left to unveil other than the bulk of the real information on everything we already know. I doubt anything special would be related to Orotto. |
There is plenty of room for a tree pokemon that isn't soodowoodo.
Fairy tales are going to be a BIG DEAL in this game. Orotto is based (possibly) on the Evil-looking trees from Snow White. Disney is a huge influence all around the world. More so when talking about Fairy Tales. |
Small update regarding details on the game mechanics;
Various details are coming in from impressions at the media briefing last week. Pokémon will gain EXP when a Pokémon is captured. The Pokémon Centers not only have the standard PokéMart, but will also have a place for you to change your outfit |

I'm thinking maybe they'll give us half of the exp. for capturing them...which in the case of Audino is still a lot :) |
I think the EXP yielded from capturing a Pokemon will include variables such as catch rate, level, and HP (maybe). It would make sense catching a level 50 Pokemon at full health with a catch rate of 3 to obtain a good amount of EXP. I'm not saying it will be a lot, but it will be worth something.
|
...YES! A bunch of times, when I meet a new pokemon, I'm like:
"Wait...is this rare? Should I catch it or KO it for XP?" And a lot of times I'm caught between KO'ing or catching it, due to XP. Now that both have rewards, my excitement for XY just went through the roof! |
Now I know this is going to sound unbelievable, but it's completely true. About 2-3 years ago a friend and I wanted to make a Pokemon hack using all fakemon that we would create ourselves (nothing ever came of it and he and I have since gone our separate ways, but that's besides the point here).
One of our ideas for a fossil pokemon? A rock/dragon type that was based on the T-rex. We even gave it a name, Terrex (terra for its rock-typing, rex for, well, T-rex). I think our other fossil was going to be an archeopteryx (hi there Archen/Archeops!). Now if there's a jumping ant pokemon or a diamond-covered Torkoal evolution announced in the next CoroCoro I will be convinced* that Game Freak is syphoning ideas out of mine and my friend's heads. *Puts on tin foil hat and waits* *not seriously |
