Pokemon X and Y KILLED it in Japan..

Over 2 million copies were sold in Japan!!

Compared to GTA V--a top seller right now in the US--only 360,000 were sold on the PS3 in Japan...

Pokemon!!! Yerrr!!!

I have both games but I think I'm more hooked on Pokemon when I'm by myself. I'll play that for hours until the battery runs out.

jazneo October 17th, 2013 9:54 PM

Exodus 20:3 "Thou shalt have no other gods before me."

I'm sorry, but I had to say that, anyway, Yes, I am glad Pokemon beat GTA V, I love the GTA series, don't get me wrong, but, the game is so overrated.

KingRin October 18th, 2013 12:41 AM

Is that even a surprise? There were/are way more 3ds sold in Japan compared to the PS3. They also play/buy more RPG and Fighting games.

Almost all of the Pokemon games(Not the spin-offs) have had pretty good sales numbers and some are the most bought games in Japan.

And Pokemon is a Japanese franchise, while IMO more western gamers play the GTA series.

At least Pokemon games are a real thing. ;)

bradenm October 18th, 2013 1:38 AM

My two friends who live in Japan both dont even play Pokemon :/. But one did tell me about it selling like crazy there and all her mates have it, in the process of convincing her to buy it ;). Aside from lack of post game content, this has been the best pokemon game since gold and silver for me personally :)

Jett311 October 18th, 2013 1:54 AM

The ratio is crazy, haha. It's so interesting to see stuff like this.

Murkrow October 18th, 2013 4:51 AM

GTA is never popular in asia, especially japan.

MKGirlism October 18th, 2013 4:56 AM

Japanese people prefer stuff made in their own country, GTA is not one of them, so I fully understand this.

Varion Bluefire October 18th, 2013 5:05 AM

Let's be honest here.
Pokemon was more anticipated then GTA V. So it's no surprise it beat GTA V in sales.

bobandbill October 18th, 2013 5:10 AM

Yeah, quite correct there. Sure, the ratio is impressive, but not when you consider the popularities of both franchises. Pokemon has always performed best in Japan relative to other countries - it's made in Japan after all, and suits the culture far better than the more explicit GTA audience. So it beating it out there is no major deal - if anything, it was an expectation. Try comparing what the GTA sales were in America compared to Pokemon, and I'd wager you'd be telling at the very least a closer story. (I'd check, but my net is having a tantrum atm. It'll be good if this post goes through...)

A better comparison would be with say, oh... Monster Hunter. That's a popular franchise, but in particular it is huge in Japan. The newest games that released last month for MH has had sales have been pretty similar to that of Pokemon there. Probably a bit below, but we're still talking above 2 million sales for the two.

Also a touch old news to be pedantic. A week or around-abouts out from release it was known the preorders for Pokemon sold out in Japan.

It took 3 years to get my brother to play Pokemon Black. He put 150 hours on it! He still not interested in XY though.

I tried finding sales numbers world wide, but I guess that will take awhile. This is day 4 of the release.

Salamence™ October 18th, 2013 7:35 AM

Go Pokemon♥
X and y Are the Best

Faye Rose~ October 18th, 2013 8:44 AM

The culture is obviously much different. Japanese people just don't enjoy shooting hookers and taking their money. I guess that's just a US thing.

Satoshi Ookami October 18th, 2013 12:47 PM

Because Japan.
Japan is like the only normal country where GTA V isn't overhyped as *insert whatever word you want*.
I'm glad there's a country where something beats GTA.

To sum it up. Japanese play Japanese games because they are obviously better.
JRPGs >>>>>> everything else

Water Gym Leader October 18th, 2013 1:04 PM

May Arceus bless the Pokemon games with an ever lasting franchise.

...Wow. Just wow. Could you possibly have been more hostile?

You realize that what you're saying is an opinion, right? As in, not a fact? You don't have to be so hostile to games from places other than Japan. You realize that other countries have made good games, right? Bioshock, Borderlands, Ratchet and Clank, Fallout, Arkham Asylum, and many other great games aren't Japanese.

Just because you prefer JRPGs doesn't make you some sort of superior life form.

Troblems October 18th, 2013 2:40 PM

I say good on them. Theoretically, it is a different base of players GTA is going for, as technically Pokemon is aimed specifically at kids.

However, My Little Pony is aimed at kids too. <3 ponies

Aeroblast October 18th, 2013 2:46 PM

No surprise there. I can't imagine GTA doing well in Japan.

The Doctor October 18th, 2013 2:49 PM

To who said that Pokemon was more anticipated than GTA V.

No it wasn't. Rockstar made their money back in Pre-orders alone, GTA V was the most anticipated game in history in my opinion, so many pre-orders. I love the game, it's the best game I've ever played on my Xbox.

Just because you're biased towards Pokemon, don't get me wrong, so am I, doesn't dictate from fact.

It's his opinion, if anything, you're the one getting hostile about him sharing it. He said that he thinks that Japanese games are obviously better, he never stated it as fact, but he never stated it as opinion either. He's only stating what he believes, he never outright said that it is fact. If he did, then he would have said so, you can't just assume that he meant that it was fact...

Attribule October 18th, 2013 4:06 PM

I think we have some people who think they know more about Japanese culture than they actually do.

For starters, Pokemon doesn't sell more in Japan because "they prefer Japanese products". That's false. Actually, Korean entertainment is VERY popular in Japan. The reason is that Japanese tend to stick with franchises and series they really like. This is why you see larger followings for anime, manga, and video game franchises there while you don't see interest in these in the west -- outside of niche communities. In the west, people are much more likely to "outgrow" things they enjoyed. A person who watched a lot of cartoons as a kid might turn around and say, "Nah, I don't watch that stuff anymore. That's kid stuff" when they start getting older. In Japan that's far less likely as they stay committed to their favorite things.

Then you have the difference in interest, in general. The reason why Japanese games almost never sell very well in the west is because only niche communities enjoy anime/manga, which Japanese video games are typically based off of whether it's directly from a specific franchise, or just the looks and feel of what you'd expect from an anime/manga. In the west there's more interest toward cinematic experiences of various kinds, not cartoons, and vice versa for Japan.
