Super Mario Bros. No Power-Ups Challenge!
http://loyalkng.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/12/ScrewAttacks-Video-Game-Vault-Super-Mario-Bros.-Random-Facts-of-Miyamotos-Mario.jpg No Power-Ups Challenge! Introduction & FAQFollowing the Legend of Zelda Challenge, this is the Super Mario challenge, celebrating the upcoming release of Super Mario 3D World! In this challenge, as the name suggests, try to complete a Super Mario Bros. game with out using any power ups, which includes Mushrooms, Fire Flowers, Super Capes, and so on. A tough feat this might be, but, try your best! Rules
Restrictions & LegitbilitySome Mario games require you to power ups in order to advance through the game, like Super Mario Galaxy, or Super Mario 64, in which, you'll won't be allowed to do the challenge on games like those. So, barring that, you're allowed to do this challenge on any of these Super Mario games below, but keep in mind some things to watch out for, which I'll put in brackets: ~ Super Mario Bros. ~ Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels ~ Super Mario Bros. 2 (in which you're automatically big, but, you can't pick up Mushrooms) ~ Super Mario Bros. 3 ~ Super Mario World (and Super Mario World Advance, in which in this case, watch out for checkpoints - they make you bigger) ~ Super Mario Land ~ Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins ~ New Super Mario Bros. ~ Super Mario 3D Land (some power ups like the propeller hat is needed in order to advance, but try and not to collect fire flowers, mushrooms, etc.) ~ New Super Mario Bros. 2 ~ New Super Mario Bros. U PrizesAw, but, what's a little event-challenge without prizes in store? You may be able to get these two emblems for participating, and going beyond that (but that is up to you!): http://i.imgur.com/MU4IJyW.gif http://i.imgur.com/EiJreik.gif Sign-UpIf you want to participate, fill out this SUS below! Well I bit off more then I could chew last time with Adventure of Link (i don't know WHAT I was thinking) but this time I'm FAR more confident.

Thought I added that, but I guess not. Well, it's in! I'll update with my progress shortly!

Game: Super Mario 3D Land. This is going to be quite a tough challenge, in my opinion. I always end up getting myself hit by Goombas, since they tend to rush into you whenever you're near them. I'll try to avoid them as much as possible this time around, because if I don't—game over. xD Good luck to everyone else who are participating! |

Game: Super Mario 3D Land I missed the Zelda challenge so I shall do this one instead :P My dependence on power-ups (mainly the Tanooki Suit) will make this very challenging, especially with my habits of collecting every power-up in sight. Good luck everyone! |
Oh fun, I may try this. Could I participate on New Super Mario Bros. for DS?

Game: Super Mario World I'm going to try to beat this game without taking any shortcuts. In other words, I am going to destroy all 7 castles in order before taking on Bowser. |
Quote:
Anyway, just to track my progress so far: ~ Beat Yoshi's Island 1 ~ Beat Yoshi's Island 2 ~ Unlocked the Yellow Switch Palace ~ Beat Yoshi's Island 3 (which was insanely easy with the Yellow Blocks unlocked!) ~ Beat Yoshi's Island 4 (kind of tricky, because of the spikes in the water, but, it as fine) ~ Beat Iggy's Castle All in all, the Yoshi's Island stage was pretty easy with no powerups, but well, it was the first course, soooo, I guess it's as to be expected. ~ Beat Donut Plains 1 ~ Beat Donut Plains 2 (which I used Yoshi for means to fly towards the secret key) ~ Unlocked Green Switch Palace ~ Beat Donut Ghost House (thought it'd be harder, buuut it was more tricky, ahaha) ~ Beat Donut Plains 3 Annnd which brings me to Donut Plains 4. I didn't unlock the secret from Donut Plains 1 to the secret Donut Plains course yet, but, maybe after Donut Plains 4 I will. I hope the 2nd castle won't be too hard... ugh. |

Game: Mario 3D Land Regarding Mario 3D Land, do the special world count? Or it just the first 8 worlds? And I'd love to see anyone here beating The Lost Levels at all, let alone beating it without power ups. lmao. EDIT: Are infinite 1-up tricks allowed? |
Quote:
Then by all means! |
Ah, in case I see myself dying a lot (lol) I'll do the world 1-2 1-up trick.
Also, as an extra, I'll avoid flags. Completely forgot it counts as a mushroom if you're small Mario. And also get hit on purpose since you start as big mario. EDIT: Also you didn't answer my special world questions. EDIT2: Well, that's world 1 done. Died from some stupid mistakes...man I'm rusty. I'm pseudo-speedrunning btw. EDIT3: World 2 done...only died once. EDIT4: World 3 done :P EDIT5: World 4! And I'm done with the day. In 1 hour I beat half of the game. :V |
Oh, the special world - technically you can be finished with the challenge if you beat all 8 courses. It's just something extra, imo. Doing the challenge on that world is up to you.

So far, I've beaten three levels from world one. In the first level, I almost got myself disqualified by running into one of those checkpoint flags. They do count as power-ups, don't they? I was able to stop just two to three seconds before touching it though, so that's good! Phew. I may end up running into one of these at some future level, though. They're just so impossible to avoid. D: I was pretty close to get struck by a red mushroom as well, but I avoided it by jumping over. Out of the three levels I've faced today, the hardest would prooobably have to be the last. That level had so many obstacles, it was ridiculous. I've lost about two lives trying to successfully complete it. Lives are quite rare when you're in a challenge like this, since the only way to obtain them is by collecting a hundred coins.
|
Alright my progress so far:
Started about an hour and a half ago. Made it through World 1 pretty easily although I did lose all of my lives once and had to start over at the Bowser Jr. castle. Besides that though,I ha d no problems. Defeated the bowser in that world easily. Now I'm at World 2, it's a little harder. The Pokey's in 2-1 were such a pan to get through, I lost about three lives trying to dodge them. The lakitu level was easy, I didn't lose a single life. I died before I got to the Bowser Jr. castle so I had to restart, but was bale to get there fine on my second try. I got through the Bowser Jr. castle with 1 life left and 97 coins. I'm currently at 2-5. |
Update #1:
World 1 was fairly easy. I died a couple times on the second level because my depth perception was off. I also died once on the bonus level that costs 3 star coins because, once again, my depth perception was off (by that I mean I jumped right into a Goomba). Bowser's level was much easier than I remembered, I must be thinking of the later levels. I stopped after the first level of the second world. I had to jump off of the edge the first time because a wild Tanooki leaf appeared (directly above me). |
Yesterday afternoon, I made some significant progress on Super Mario World. I will list all the levels I have beaten so far. This checklist is long because it contains all 96 exits in the game so I'll keep it inside the spoiler tags.
Spoiler:
Out of those levels I have completed, I found Vanilla Dome 1 and Cheese Bridge Area's secret exit to be challenging. For Vanilla Dome 1, it was the second room in particular. That is the room where you collect a star and run on a sinking yellow platform to kill enemies before the platform goes in lava. This is a lot harder since the star is banned. The trick was to eat the Buzzy Beetles with Yoshi while running at full speed. Slowing down for even a second means the end for both of you. It took me several tries to pull these off and I had to make a trip to Yoshi's Island 2 to pick up a new Yoshi after every failed attempt. For Cheese Bridge Area secret exit, it was just getting to the end of the level that was annoying. Luckily, there was a Yoshi to get in the Cookie Mountain level right next door. An epic fail moment occurred early in the playthrough. I attempted to complete Star World 1. However, that level is full of yellow blocks which can only be destroyed using a power-up. The game even leaves a Super Mushroom to taunt me. I pretty much had no choice but to let the time expire and turn around. I'm tempted to complete as many exits as possible. As of now, it looks like 93 exits is the highest amount possible. |

Game: Super Mario Bros. The Lost Levels I'm gonna do it. I feel like someone has to try, at least. I have actually beaten this game ONCE before after God knows how many rage-quits and with that being said, I probably won't be able to finish this challenge buuuuut I'll give it my best shot. FYI, I'll be playing the 25th Anniversary Edition port for the Wii if that's OK? I think I have a Dazzle somewhere so I'll try to record my progress as proof. ^^ Oh and are you allowed to play multiple games? |
Quote:
Give this man a special emblem if he does it! |
Aha, I admire your enthusiasm! :3
And yes, you are allowed to do multiple games if you wish! |
Great! Then I'd like to sign up for New Super Mario Bros. U as well. Will most likely have a far more enjoyable experience with that than Lost Levels! :)

I'll be playing Mario World from my phone, so count me in on this :D
Username: Meganium90 Game: Super Mario World (GBA) also to the guy trying out Lost Levels without power-ups, lord have mercy on your soul. |
Current progress: I'm about half way through the third world in New Super Mario Bros. for DS. Personally, I think that the third world is easier than the second. I had to halt playing because I can't find my charger and both of my DS Lites are about to die. Hopefully I can start playing again tomorrow or Wednesday because I'm going to have my friend, who has a charger, charge them for me tomorrow. :p
|
Update Number 1:
I just beat Tree Zone, I just had one quick question before I move on though Do 1-Up's count as Powerup's or specificity for this game, extra lives you win through bounus stages or the Slot Machine? I've been avoiding the so far, but I just wanted to double check before I continue. |

Game: New Super Mario Bros 2 I guess I'll do this over the weekend or something. |
All right, guys, time for a quick update! Last time, I was able to finish three levels from world number one. Yesterday, I've managed to complete the rest of the levels. And today, I've gotten four levels done from world two. Like last time, I was pretty close to touching a power-up today. Thankfully, I was able to avoid it by standing still. If I had taken even a single step, then I probably would have obtained the power-up and get myself to restart the challenge. d:
Out of the four levels I've faced today, my favorite would definitely have to be the third. It was quite fun to get through. The course had things called "Reversible Platforms," metallic tiles that float in the air. Every time you jump, they switch around their positions. And if you end up not landing on them, then you immediately fall down to the ground and lose one of your lives. These are quite tricky, and always require you strategize before making a move. |
Update #2:
I literally did the same levels as [supporter]Perdition Haze[/supporter] haha. My favorite of the levels was W2L3, where you are supposed to use the propeller block in order to advance. But since I couldn't use them I made some giant moon jumps instead :P Fortunately the level goes down instead of up so I could land each jump. However there was one part that required the propeller block so... |
There's a segment on Forest of Illusion 3 which requires a powerup. I'm recording it in parts, so I'm gonna end up going to Star World 5 through the fortress. Still gotta get the Green Switch Palace yet.
|

http://i40.*.com/1zpjkaq.jpg Position the key and yourself the same way as the screenshot. Jump straight up and eat the key with Yoshi. If timed correctly, the key can cause some of the yellow blocks to spin as it is getting eaten by Yoshi's tongue. I accidentally discovered this trick yesterday and I was able to replicate it after figuring out what was causing those blocks to spin. Unfortunately, that victory was short lived. It seems impossible to beat the Sunken Ship because you have to pick up the star at the end of the level. I even tried to hug the left wall after coming out of the pipe but you still pick up the star. Ugh, it looks like I just have to reach Bowser's Castle through the Star World after all. |
Update Day #3:
Apparently my DS Lite charger came in the mail from Amazon yesterday, but my parents didn't tell me about it until today. Anyways, I started playing again today and got through World 3 and am almost at the halfway point at World 5. Al of the levels at World 3 were easy except for when I had to challenge the Cheep Cheep boss. That took me like 15 different lives, ugh it was a pain. I'm currently stuck at the Bowser Jr. castle in World 5. After World 5, the last two will be extremely difficult. |
I'd just like to say that I have completed Super Mario World, taking the star route from Forest of Illusion (because of the Forest of Illusion 3 issue). I have videos in parts, and also the route that I took. I also die a few times whilst recording.
Yoshi's Island 1, Yellow Switch Palace, YI2, YI3, YI4, Iggy's Castle, Donut Plains 1, DP2, Donut Ghost House, DP3, DP4, Morton's Castle, Vanilla Dome 1, VD2 (Key), Red Switch Palace, VD2, Vanilla Ghost House, VD3, VD4, Lemmy's Castle, Cheese Bridge Area, Cookie Mountain, Ludwig's Castle, Forest of Illusion 1, DP2 (Key), Green Switch Palace, FoI2 (Key), Blue Switch Palace, FoI2, FoI3, Forest Ghost House, FoI4, Forest Secret Area, Forest Fortress, Star World 4, Front Door. EDIT: I would not consider 1-ups as powerups, since you are not powering up Mario in any way, only giving him lives. Another EDIT: I had to take the videos down because of stupid copyright notices. Everything is just getting stupid now. |

Game: Super Mario World I am planning to record the whole run, just so there's proof that I did the playthrough without powerups. I might just suicide if I do get one just so I don't need to worry about that issue and just redo the level. |
Quick Update:
So a few days ago I managed to reach World 6 in Lost Levels. I honestly was starting to have a... well, I wouldn't call it fun but a tolerable experience with the game, and then I started World 5, where I realised what I was actually getting myself into. Anyway, I hope to finish the game within this week. :P |
Just a quick little update. I managed to survive Yoshi's Island without dying...an extreme number of times. I'll try getting the video uploaded soon, but most of it is just me rambling about stuff while trying to dodge powerups and everything that wanted to kill me.
|
Without any power-ups, this is one of the most arduous games that I have ever played. To get through World 6, it took me at least 3 hours. I've been playing a few hours each day since Tuesday. Finally I'm at the final castle on World 8. Will post pictures tonight or tomorrow once I beat the game. This is a very hard challenge. xD
Update Today: Finally beat that last castle and Bowser. Only took me about an hour. lol Here are some pics for verification: Spoiler:

This morning I actually remembered about doing this challenge (pretty much a standalone challenge), and started NSMB2 while I wait for my GTS deal to finish.
I'm currently at world 4. Will post screenshot once I beat the final world (if). |
I haven't seen this mentioned in the rules, so I'm assuming (hoping!) it's ok? Game is tough as nails!

Edit: Luckily, I've been able to play quite a bit tonight; I'm already up to World 8 without using a power-up! Hopefully I'll be able to finish the challenge before the deadline tomorrow. |
Spoiler:
Finished the game over the weekend. Ended up taking the Star Road because I could never get past the Sunken Ghost Ship without grabbing that star in the end. |
You guys got until 11:59 p.m. to finish up! ^^ Good Job on your progresses so far! <3
|
Update: Well, that's it! Managed to beat the final level just now. What an awesome game! And the no power-up challenge made it even more fun. Can't wait to play 3D World at Christmas now!

When I kept dying because of small mistakes at the end, it reminded me of playing the old Mario games. |
I'll be honest, I got rocked on World 8. Last stage before Bowser too, it was too crushing :(
|
So I did manage to beat Lost Levels, surprisingly, but I haven't uploaded the video to Youtube yet so I can't really prove it... Will it be too late to link the video when it's been uploaded?
EDIT: DONE. NEVER AGAIN. Spoiler:
...The Super Mario Bros. theme will forever haunt me. |
Quote:
Update on mine...well, I forgot that there's a certain level that is required to beat that needed a certain amount of star coins. Since I was trying to beat it as fast as possible, I didn't really try to get the coins. When I reached that point I lost the will to try. It's too late anyway lol. Why did 3D Land make star coins pretty significant to the main playthrough? Pretty stupid. Should have went with NSMB Wii or SMW. lol |
Anywho, this event was long over, so thanks for participating you guys! You'll all get a special emblem (or two) for your participation!
I hope you'll look forward to other challenge events! |
