Shinies: Battles or Contests?

As I'm still hunting for my elusive shiny zigzagoon, I've been whiling away the time by trying to decide what to do with him/her. Do I raise him/her for battling, or do I prime him/her for contests? Or do I just store him/her away as I've done with the others? :\

Then I wondered just what all of you would do once you caught the Shiny you'd been chasing for so many hours. :cheeky:

OH, BTW, the poll results won't influence my decision in any way: I just curious, that's all.

Do you have another contest pokemon? If not, then use that one for contests. Zigzagoon is not all that great in battle, so it would be better as a contest Pokemon.

Funny you should start this thread. Only yesterday I was EV training a Houndour in Pokemon Tower in Lavender Town. I'd been there a while and was just on my way out from about the 4th floor when it appeared! It was a shiny Cubone :D. So I caught it, not taking any chances of a CH I attacked it with tiny attacks. Now I have my first shiny pokemon in R/S FR/LG. Im so happy! :D

It depends what the base stats is... if it is low, contest, if high, evolve it and use for battle.... or maybe use it as a expensive HM slave?

btw, I am thinking of a good move set for battle Zigzagoon.

The only shiny I've ever got is the Red Gyarados on Gold, so I don't use my shinies for anything :( If I did find a shiny, I'd have to check its stats firstly.

Emerald Queen February 21st, 2005 6:37 AM

I've already completed all the contests and had five portraits painted :D so I don't actually need to use it to go into contests. It's just that the other two shinies I've got aren't ones I'd battle or go into contests with. The golbat looks kind of cool, but I only battle golbats/zubats to evolve them into crobats, and I like the look of my golbat better than the shiny crobat I could get it to evolve into. As for the doduo, shiny is a bad name, because I think it lookes even more drab than a regular doduo.

I do like linoones, though ( I have a regular lvl100 linoone): I've found they can learn some nice moves, but they're also suited to doing contests. So I'm kind of torn about battling with my soon to be new shiny and evolving it, or keeping it as a zigzagoon and putting it in contests, just for the fun of it.

As to the stats business, I've never got the hang of it:I have enough trouble getting my pokemon up to lvl100, without trying to max all my stats. As I haven't caught the blessed thing yet, this is all moot, but I'm a curious cat, and just wondered what other people might do in such a circumstance :P

Sorry about going off topic, but I love your sig! Is that a Gardevoir? and where did you get it?

If I could manage to find a shiny pokemon, I'd definately use it for battle. =D

BigBoss February 21st, 2005 11:57 AM

Depends what pokemon it was. If it is something like a skitty, I'd put it in my box. if it was a cool yet weak pokemon like Nidoking, I'd use it for contests and if it was somthing like a Charizard, I'd use it for battle.

Kyogre-chan February 21st, 2005 12:07 PM

I'd most likely EV train and contest train at the same time, so after I beat the contests, it could be used for competititive battling.

Lord Jaws February 21st, 2005 6:54 PM

Sorry to go off topic but how do you get the portraits done and whats the reward?

I assume you need to win the master rank contests to get portraits for the mueseum.

IceKitten February 22nd, 2005 4:55 AM

It depends what Pokémon it was, and how strong it was

kohei February 23rd, 2005 1:07 AM

OK, I tought of the moveset, since I was bored today:
Flail
Shadow Ball
Belly Drum
Substitute

Basically, you Substitute first, hope the opponents attack doesn't destroy the substitute, Belly Drum the next turn, then Flail. If the opponent is a ghost type, Shadow Ball.

I'm not 100% certain on this, but I've found that the only way to get your portrait done is to win all four ranks in a category, first time around, one after the other i.e. no going back and entering two Super Ranks contests for Smart, for example.

It's tough to do, especially when you're faced with v powerful opponents in both Master Rank Tough and Master Rank Smart. In MRT, there's a Camerupt that uses a combo of Fissure and Earthquake, which are high powered appeals when in combo, and also jams up yours badly. In MRS, the problem is a Destiny Bond using Wobuffet, who uses this as a fourth or fifth appeal, and uses protective appeals beforehand.

Visit the Lilycove Art Gallery and speak to the Curator on the second floor. Once you've had all five painted, you'll get a glass ornament for your secret base. This is the same as the bird statues you see in the Gallery
