REAL Punk

Okay you guys. Many of you have been posting stuff:
Quote:

"Yeah, I'm punk. I listen to stuff like Avril Lavign, Good Charlotte, and Sum41"
Sorry to tell you this, but NONE of that stuff is punk. Thursday is NOT punk, stuff like that is pop music that are tryying to emulate punk without actually getting into the detail of it all.

REAL punk bands are:
The Misfits
The Exploted
Anti-Flag
SEX Pistols

And I doubt any of you actually listen to stuff like that, if you do, then tell me, that would be cool.

Thomas February 21st, 2005 4:18 PM

The only ppl I listen to on that list are the Sex Pistols and The Misfits..never heard of the other ones. I am not really that big of the Real punk rock band...I am more of a hard rock and alternative rock fan.

And...you better add green day to that list right now...cause they fawkin rock more than anyone...

deathbyalice February 21st, 2005 4:19 PM

Green Day is not a real punk band either.

EvIL_CAjUN_CHIkIN February 21st, 2005 4:19 PM

I'm with him^^^^^(Amphros23)

Green Day is so a punk band.

I've never heard of a couple of those bands either.

Just don't spam the punk rock club, or I will seriously report you, seriously.
*or at least report you to someone who can report you to the big guys*

Don't worry, I won't spam your club.
But seriously, Green Day is not punk. They are alternative, I will not go far enough to say they are pop (eww...) Because I myself like Gren Day.

My mom listens to all that stuff. She was one of the original people of punk. (She was born in 1974) So, yeah, I'm pretty familiar with that stuff, it's cool! ^__^ ~origin

EvIL_CAjUN_CHIkIN February 21st, 2005 4:23 PM

please don't go there...(the pop thing)

they still are kinda punk, I'd think, but hey! I don't think much!!!

Wow, that's cool. Did she star any riots? lol.
Punks hate me....because I'm goth (at least, that is what people label me as). I like to listen to some punk music though. I have Exploited and stuff like that.

AFI USED to be punk, they turned goth for some reason... I wonder why? But Davi Havok sure looks good now...

Thomas February 21st, 2005 4:28 PM

I don't really like labels.
Funny thing punks normally hate goths, and vise versa, but my first boyfriend was a punk, which is why I now listen to the Exploited...

Ryoutarou February 21st, 2005 4:32 PM

I'll go ahead and move this to OE ^^ But I do agree with the first post, most people today are confused by Pop/Punk and and Rock. Seeing bands like GC and SP labeled as Punk and Rock is really annoying...I just call it the Pop of the new age XD

Thomas February 21st, 2005 4:32 PM

I dont like labels but it fun to label ppl when you see ppl on the street or in the mall or whatever. I dont even know how to classify punk anymore cause ppl have distorted it so much...

yeah, lol. Well, old school punk guys whould wear jeans, a white t-shirt and a leather jacket, and put band logos and stuff on their jackets. They wore their hair in moehawks or had devil locks, and for some reason the girls seemed to look like whores, or dressed like guys...Kind of weird...

"I dont like labels but it fun to label ppl when you see ppl on the street or in the mall or whatever."

Dear sweet mother of that guy I hate, the sheer hypcricy is mind-numbing...

Ryoutarou February 21st, 2005 4:36 PM

There is a difference between a musical genre and a label DT, but with people they're usually labeled...Which I don't do....Then again this post was hypocritial of itself XD

lol, I don't like it when people label me. But it happens all the time, so have to live with it.

DragonTrainer February 21st, 2005 4:55 PM

But he said he didn't like labels, yet thinks its fun to label people, kinda hyopcritical

deathbyalice February 21st, 2005 4:56 PM

Yeah, I saw that too. I know what you mean.

Scyther5 February 21st, 2005 5:04 PM

I listen to bands like Thursday and Taking Back Sunday, but I don't call them punk. I personally don't like to label music but I do have to agree Greenday is deffentally not punk rock, more of pop, although I do listen to there old stuff.

Punk rock got its name from the slang word punk meaning rotten and worthless. It was originally used to describe simple guitar based rock of bands like The Seeds, and later on Detroit bands like The Stooges and MC5. The anti-establishment ethic of punk hit a fevered pitch in 1976 through 1980, started partially as a backlash to the hippie movement of the late 60's. Many of these bands also intended to shock mainstream society, rejecting the "peace and love" image of the prior musical rebellion of the 1960s which had degenerated, punks thought, into mellow disco culture. The fashion Punk rock, gothic rock, industrial, hardcore punk, grunge, nu metal, thrash metal, gothic metal, new waveof the time included mohawks, body piercing with safety pins and conversion of unusual items into clothing and was very shocking to outsiders at the time. Punk rock embodied the ideals that anyone could start a punk rock band. Punk was stripped-down, three-chord music that could be played fairly easily. The lyrics introduced a new honesty of expression in matters both political and sexual freeing the artist to write in a more personal and honest way. Using cover songs as a ironic form of social commentary was a common theme among many artists. The emphasis in punk rock was placed on emotion and energy and not strictly musicianship. It's best known bands are the punk rock holy trinity of the Sex Pistols, The dàmned, and The Clash who many feel are the defining bands of the genre. The roots of punk rock were dark psychedelic and garage rock, glam rock, new wave music and the unusual and sporadic style of the immortal Velvet Underground, long thought to be the originators of punk rock. Later bands incorporated punk and ska elements which were largely unknown in the rock genre.

Punk... Meh.
It's all about Metal! Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, & *coughMetallicacough*!

Cuboner February 21st, 2005 7:15 PM

It's all about the Smiths, Dead Kennedys, Iggy Pop, The Ramones, The Stooges, and we'll throw in Corrosion of Conformity for good measure.

jasonresno February 21st, 2005 7:18 PM

Everytime I see:
Good Charlotte, Sum 41, Simple Plan, Avril Lavigne, Ashley Simpson

in a profile, I die a little inside.

You want real punk?!

Green Day
The Ramones
SEX PISTOLS
Dropkick Murphies
dead kennedies
the misfits
bad religin

Pincushion February 22nd, 2005 4:48 AM

Your all getting confused with your music now, theres alot of diffrent styles of music, its just people get confused with what they actually are, I listen to proper Punk/SKA music, Like as Deathbyalive said, the Misfits ,Anti-Flag
SEX Pistols, THE CLASH, SKA is bands like Dropkick Murphies with trumpets and cool stuff like that!

Bands like Thursday, MCR, Taking back sunday are EMO,
and bands like, Green Day, Good charlotte, and blink 182s new stuff are soft rock,

Avril whats her name is just pop!

Now common guys, get that C.D player on and wack on some Pure Punk & SKA!
