Do you use your master ball?

You know i never use my master ball me or my friends, in black & white i have 8. I always catch the legendary with a quick ball or time ball or a normal Pokeball. It just seems anti climatic, you spend allot of the game leading up to it there so much hype and what you just throw the ball and its over??? No i want to fight the thing and try to catch it! Well what dose every one else use master ball or other?

Edward Newgate November 5th, 2013 11:04 AM

I am playing Pokémon Crystal, Pokémon Sapphire, Pearl, White 2 and Pokémon X. On all these, I passed the Elite Four, Defeated the champion and caught the available legendaries, and I still have the masterball on every single one of these. I just don't like using it, for the same reason you stated in the OP. You finally get to fight the legendary, and you decide to throw the damn purple ball of doom in the first turn, and you catch him. "WOO-HOO I DIDN'T EXPECT THAT AT ALL!"...

Yoshi119 November 5th, 2013 11:06 AM

Only on the legendaries that run away from battle. I feel that's what the master ball was made for.

Molts November 5th, 2013 11:08 AM

Definitely on runners, oh god Gen 4 where there are too! Thankfully they fixed runners in Gen 6 but making you find them then can fight them normally. No master ball needed. I do regret not using it on the only wild shiny I've ever seen. Crit and one shot it, was a sad day.

Guy November 5th, 2013 11:25 AM

Moved this on over to PGC seeing as its a question that can be covered across every generation.

When I got my first Pokémon game [Ruby], I used to use my Master Ball to capture Groudon all the time. What? I was a kid, I didn't know any better. Eventually I learned it was better to save it for the runaways (i.e. Latios) until I started learning techniques on how to capture those without the use of the Master Ball. Took more time, but it made the hunt all the more fun. Nowadays, the Master Ball just sits in my bag like a prize token really. I never really need to use them anymore. It's always good to have one though, just in case!

Ewery1 November 5th, 2013 12:12 PM

Yes, I do. I probably shouldn't anymore though.

Kikaito plush November 5th, 2013 12:21 PM

I will use them if it is a roamer pokemon like the beasts on soulsivler

Blueredemption November 5th, 2013 12:43 PM

I used it in on zygard but only because i forgot to save before entering battle, but other than that i haven't used it since who knows when.

Pilkie November 5th, 2013 12:49 PM

Nope. I used it in Pokémon gold to catch one of the legendary dogs (was forever ago, I don't remember which one) but since then I never really needed to use it. I always saved it for some reason, I guess I expected some really hard runner legendary to show up, but they never did. OP has a good point though, it is really anti-climactic, isn't it?

Lesqx November 5th, 2013 12:58 PM

Well.. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. In Pokemon Fire Red i use, in Crystal/Platinum/Emerald i still master ball.

Meganium November 5th, 2013 2:46 PM

I always use my master ball in every game. I only use it to capture a certain legendary Pokemon of my liking, especially Aritcuno, Suicune, and Zekrom. Why keep it collecting dust, though? xD

Mario The World Champion November 5th, 2013 5:25 PM

I rarely use my Master Ball on Legendaries or Pokémon that flee. I just take comfort on knowing its there and ready to use. I was thinking about using it to catch Xerneas or Mewtwo, but I caught them both with the Timer Ball because it took me a long time to whittle down their HP with False Swipe.

typhlosionflames November 5th, 2013 6:56 PM

I'm never using a Masterball again. The most used Pokeball I end up using in the end is either the Pokeball or Ultraball.

Quinn November 5th, 2013 7:19 PM

I remember heartgold/soulsilver were the legendary were a little difficult to catch, but now they all have a super high catch rate. They Literally ask you to catch them... no really don't you guys remember in Pokemon black & white if you killed the legendary it looks at you and says "Catch me"

Sirfetch’d November 5th, 2013 9:00 PM

I use the Master Ball on things that are particularly hard to catch such as roaming legends or box legends. I won't use it unless I absolutely have to though as I like the challenge of wearing down the Pokemon and chucking dozens of Ultra Balls at it, haha. The only other time that I have ever used a Master Ball on anything other than what I mentioned was a shiny once. I ran into a shiny Nidoran and all I had was my Master Ball on me. I wasn't about to just let it go so I used it.

damientheomen3 November 5th, 2013 9:12 PM

I'm not fond of using the master ball, takes the fun out of the catch IMO. The only times I've ever used it is on shinies that were too low leveled for me to take a chance on whittling down.

pompayyy November 5th, 2013 9:19 PM

I always procrastinate using it so much, by the time I make my decision, I've already gotten all the Pokemon (including legendaries) that I want.

curiousnathan November 5th, 2013 9:37 PM

I use my Masterball on the Legendary Mascots. I know that might be noobish, but I really prefer the challenge of catching the run aways with regular Pokeballs than a Masterball.

Ephemeral Euphoria November 5th, 2013 9:42 PM

I use the Masterball on roamers like the Beasts or Lati twins to save me a few hours of going back and forth.

Firox November 5th, 2013 11:31 PM

I have only used my Master Ball once, to catch a shiny Mienfoo in Black 2. All my other Master Balls are just collecting dust.

Pecilia November 5th, 2013 11:46 PM

I save them for the traveling pokemon. Like Mespirit, Entei, Cressalia, etc. I hate chasing them so if I can't hit it with a quick ball I just go for the master. Pretty impatient when it comes to those guys.

Hiatus November 6th, 2013 3:34 AM

I don't use Master Ball. Well, most of the time. d: When it comes capturing legendaries, I always try to use the regular type of Poké Balls—even on roaming ones. If I ever end up encountering a roaming legendary Pokémon, first thing I do is strike an attack to lower its health a bit. Then, I will go into the Pokémon Center and stack my team up with Pokémon that could help me capturing this legendary, such as those who know how to use Mean Look, Thunder Wave, False Swipe, etc. When I'm all set, I would start hunting this Pokémon. As soon as I encounter it, I'd use Mean Look instantly, so that it'd be blocked from escaping. After that, I'd have it paralyzed and bring it down to its lowest possible health. Now, it's ready for capturing! I could use any Poké Ball that I like (other than Master Ball, of course), and nothing would ever be able to stop me. (: Last time I've used a Master Ball was when playing Emerald, I think. I've used it once in Pokémon Y, but that doesn't totally count, since I reset the game immediately after the capture.

One issue with this is that Entei has roar so you need to get something the prevent you from being thrown out of battle.

Text November 6th, 2013 5:27 AM

I don't really use my master ball as they are 100% catch
I wanted it to make it more challenging like using Ultra balls and sometimes when I am bored
I use a pokeball <===l I caught a kyogre with that once in pokemon emerald.

Oscairy November 6th, 2013 8:41 AM

I still have my master ball on Pokémon X. I'm saving it for an especially difficult catch, such as Moltres, since it can flee or maybe a shiny that I don't want to lose out on. I've never caught a shiny so I can imagine I'll just panic and throw the master ball at it.

Like many have stated, catching legendaries is no fun when using a master ball. Zygarde was especially difficult to catch without making it faint. I just saved my game right before I walked up to it so I could try and catch it as many times as I needed without waiting.

Ragin Dragon November 6th, 2013 8:50 AM

On ruby i used to catch groudon because I did not want to fight it at the time but i thought it was funny because the guy was all like"you will never beat groudon" and i was like "PEW GO MASTERBALL" instant catch but now i don't use it on Y because I've gotten somewhat better at cathing Legends than on Crystal were it took me forever to get Entei...

EB November 6th, 2013 5:12 PM

The Master Ball is a gift of the almighty Arceus and should never, ever be used.

幕之内 一歩 November 6th, 2013 5:17 PM

I like to coerce Pokemon into my poke balls by threatening to use the Master Ball.

"Just don't fight it, enter this lovely poke ball, it has all the amenities you need!"

...

"Look don't fight it. You can either get in here willingly, or I can force it on you with this bad boy!"

*pats the Master Ball*

"Yeah, that's what I thought."

Boilurn November 6th, 2013 9:26 PM

I always use the Master Ball, but only on those Legendaries that are difficult to catch, but still permitted for the Battle Subway such as the Swords of Justice. I never use it on Reshiram or Zekrom, because they're simply easier to catch than others.

braixen November 6th, 2013 9:31 PM

i never use my master ball because i never see a point in using it if i can catch it with a pokeball. even if it does take more effort i just hate using it bc i feel like i've used it on the wrong pokemon or s/t lol

Brendino November 7th, 2013 12:48 AM

My Master Ball is always reserved for that moment when I come across a shiny Pokemon that I'm worried I won't be able to catch with another Poke Ball- either because my other Pokemon are overleveled compared to it, or it has a ridiculously low catch rate.

I only time I actually used the Master Ball in a situation like that was with a Shiny Ducklett on Pokemon White. Looking back, I probably jumped the gun and could've caught it with another ball, but it was 3 in the morning, and I wasn't going to take my chances by accidentally knocking it out while half asleep.

Quinn November 8th, 2013 10:02 AM

Well every one is pretty much saying the same thing, sorry game freak were not using it on what you want us to.

GreyVirgo November 8th, 2013 7:30 PM

I used to use the Master Ball on the Legendary Pokemon but now I thought of Why not use it on the roaming ones.

Aeroblast November 9th, 2013 6:06 AM

It depends. Usually I'd reserve it for explosion/whirlwind/roar using shinies, but it's way too situational to ever be used. On X/Y I just used it on Mewtwo to save myself resetting for decent natures and stats.

RimasLT November 9th, 2013 6:39 AM

Master balls - Oh Jesus Christ ,F*** No :D

Ultra balls - Oh my Lord Belial - Yes ,Yes & Yes :D

That is my opinion :]

Sniper November 9th, 2013 6:50 AM

When I really needed. But I mostly use ultraball for legendaries.
Also with basic strategy to catch a legendary without using a masterball.

AquaWartortle November 10th, 2013 10:47 AM

I don't usually use the masterball because it takes away the climactic legendary battle :p If I use it I wouldn't feel as fulfilled as a battle were I throw all my pokeballs at the guy XD Also, I guess I'd only use it on Mewtwo :p

Kanzler November 10th, 2013 10:48 AM

Sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. But I don't really like using it, since there's only one of it. Also, it takes out a lot of the work in capturing awesome legendaries. I tend to capture everything in pokeballs, since I just like the design better than the other balls.

Starry Windy November 11th, 2013 7:36 PM

I was catching my Giratina in Platinum using Master Ball, but I've decided to not use it in future games afterwards, because usually I only got one of the Master Ball.

KittenKoder November 11th, 2013 7:57 PM

This is the first game I still have my master ball after catching the legendary pokemon. Not complaining about that though, it's just interesting to note. Usually I need it for at least one pokemon somewhere.

icelovebunnies9 November 11th, 2013 8:05 PM

When I was playing Pearl, I used my Master Ball because I thought that I couldn't catch it otherwise. XD I wasn't really smart back then, and I didn't know that it was pretty easy to catch if you tried. Afterwards, I never used my Master Ball. I always caught legendaries the hard way.

Altair November 11th, 2013 8:12 PM

I only use the Master Ball on two specific Pokemon. Mewtwo and Mesprit. I find it suits those two very well!
If the said Pokemon isn't in the game then I end up just saving it for nothing really...

Pike Queen November 12th, 2013 1:07 PM

Yes, usually on the Legendaries that flee after one turn.

Sheep November 12th, 2013 1:11 PM

I use them on roaming Pokemon, usually, but since X and Y has no roamers as of right now I ended up using it on Mewtwo. Not going to suffer trying Mean Look/an ability/other methods to trap + catch them anymore.. too much of a pain. ;(

Nolafus November 12th, 2013 1:55 PM

I tried not using my master ball once. I forgot to save the game for a considerable time, so I was being extra careful. I ended up getting a critical hit and the legendary went bye-bye. About four shinies have gotten away from me because of unfortunate critical-hits, so I tend not to risk it. I know it seems a bit anti-climatic, but I never use legendaries anyway, so I just don't really care.

disciplish November 12th, 2013 2:13 PM

I remember that even back when I first got Sapphire, I didn't use the Master Ball on Kyogre. Actually, I went and used in on Rayquaza instead. It's a Level 70 already, so I might as well have. And then I did the same in Emerald. When I replay those two though, I save it for [email protected]

In Platinum, I only used the Master Ball for Mesprit, because my god there were too many roamers.

In Black and White, my Master Ball was reserved for Tornadus. In Black 2/White 2, I don't think I even used it at all xD Actually, in those games I seemed to have the most luck [catching two of the Swords of Justice at full health with Ultra Balls].

And finally, now in X and Y I haven't even touched them. Granted, I'm at the E4 anyways, but I don't really plan to use it. At this point they're more like trophies than anything. And even when I'm tempted to use em', I try to convince myself to save it for something better. Even when there usually isn't xD

Arca09 November 12th, 2013 3:10 PM

The last time I used masterball was in the original gold lol. I usually use quickball, timer ball or duskball. I always intend to save the masterball for SOMETHING, its just that I can never bring myself to use it. xD

Seifonor November 12th, 2013 4:19 PM

I use it as a last resort. in heartgold I used it on Latias because I didn't want to chase after it (I hate roaming legendaries lol)

Link119 November 12th, 2013 4:26 PM

Not gonna lie, I sometimes use it just because if I don't, it's useless...It's not like there are any achievements for not using it, besides the possibility of some pretentious individual thinking he's better than you for catching one 3-catch rate pokemon more than you without the use of a master ball...

Beyond Infinity November 13th, 2013 9:25 AM

I don't generally use them, simply because I don't generally go around finding all the legendaries.

In Pearl, I once traded for a Masterball and a loan of the three "Regi"s in order to get Regigias, and used that Masterball while keeping my original.
Also once got a Parichsu on the GTS, level 9, in a Masterball. I released it since it was either hacked/glitched or someone really unaware of what a Masterball is.

Blastin'Tyruntz November 13th, 2013 10:49 AM

I do use i sometimes, but obly when necassery. Examples of this are azelf, uxie and mesprit. You can only catch them at the lakes but never again. I caught uxie in the masterball and azelf in a quick ball. But because i was so hyped, i only had 2 pokeballs when i fought mesprit, and couldn't catch him. I regretted that ever since. So i got one in a trade, but it isn't the same as the thrill you get for finally catching a pokemon yourself.

In the other hand, there are people who catch a freaking caterpie in a master ball like lil' pissers.

starseed galaxy auticorn November 13th, 2013 10:54 AM

I only do on my legendary pokemon, unless I have cheat codes from the AR... than I use master balls to catch my pokemon all of the time.

ZetaZaku November 13th, 2013 11:40 AM

I guess it's cool for roaming legendaries. Otherwise Time Ball and Dusk Ball are your friends (unless the legendary is stronk/outside). I rarely use Master Balls. Last one I used was on Mesprit in Pearl. I accidentally ran into it while I was chaining, so I threw the Master Ball asap haha.

Pecilia November 13th, 2013 4:09 PM

Was tired of Mewtwo's crap so I threw the masterball at it. It turned out to be Modest Nature which is pretty awesome imo.

DuskAlloy November 15th, 2013 11:24 AM

Only for Mewtwo, it feels right for some reason.

LoudSilence November 15th, 2013 12:24 PM

Used Master Ball on Mewtwo as a kid, it just felt right. Ever since then I've always reserved it for him or any legendary that seemed to be like him in another game.

I always chase down the roaming guys, the frustration only makes catching it more satisfying :)

Yukari November 15th, 2013 12:27 PM

Yeah Normally I use it on the mascot Pokemon.

You have to be joking... The only version mascots worth Master Balling are Rayquaza, Ho-Oh, and Kyurem. And possibly Distortion World Giratina. (Use Heavy Balls on Lugia and Ultra/Dusk Balls on every other mascot.)

That's subjective though, it's up to the player to decide what's special enough to use the MB on...I knew I kid that used it on Moltres because that was his favourite Pokemon, go figure :)
