Have you ever not wanted to evolve for aesthetic reasons?

I have a Misdreavus. He's my favorite traveling buddy in HeartGold. He's adorable. Misdreavus is a long time favorite of mine <3

But...

Despite being level 50, he's not that strong. Misdreavus has pretty low base stats in general, and I have put a lot of work into EV training him.

So my reluctance to evolve him is mostly an aesthetic thing. Not that I have a problem with Mismagius or anything, but "Misdreavus cuddled up to you" is cute. "Mismagius cuddled up to you" is scary. Anyone else ever had this (admittedly silly) dilemma?

«Chuckles» November 16th, 2013 10:50 PM

Yeah, I liked Monferno over Infernape. I always pressed B but I forgot to once and he just leveled up to 98 I was so close but I just sucked it up and bred myself another chimchar.

FSNW5yiFrXVXqv November 17th, 2013 12:17 AM

Rattata and Vibrava. So cute~!

Hiatus November 17th, 2013 1:18 AM

In Platinum, I had a Vulpix which I didn't evolve. Why didn't I? Because, well, Vulpix is one of my all-time favorite Pokémon. It's small, cute, friendly, and pretty huggable; I just didn't want to let it go. Also, its puppy-looking eyes are simply irresistible—every time I look into them, I instantly get mesmerized. xD I would've taken this Vulpix out for walks to Amity Square every now and then if I had the chance, but unfortunately, it was restricted from that place. No idea why, though. If it wasn't, then that would've been quite awesome. I've captured this Pokémon while exploring Route 209, and kept it on my team ever since. Vulpix's stats are kind of low, but surprisingly, I was able to take down many of my opponents' Pokémon with it in online matches. If you EV train it properly, it becomes even better.

You find Misdreavus cute? Me too!

But anyways, if I halt the evolution of one of my Pokemon, it's not because of aesthetics. It's because I want it to learn a certain move that its evolution can't learn. For example, I had a Riolu in Pokemon White 2, and I kept halting evolving it until it got Nasty Plot. And if I have a Pikachu, I don't evolve it until it has learned Thunderbolt and Agility.

Sometimes, I even keep postponing evolution to learn a certain move earlier. For example, if I have a Pupitar, I don't evolve it at level 55, but at level 56 to make it learn Earthquake. (This only counts for gens 2 and 3, though.)

Frazzevous November 17th, 2013 3:52 AM

I definitely have. The Pokemon in question, in my case, is Quilava. It's somewhat badass and undeniably cute! I remember posting a thread in Serebii, IIRC, about whether I should evolve Quilava for power or just let it stay that way due to its appearance. I ended up with the latter, I believe. :3

Natnew November 17th, 2013 4:10 AM

I remember having a conversation with my friend...

"I'm going to give togetic an everstone"
"why?"
"because it's evolution is butt-ugly"

...I asked why because it evolves by stone, so an ever stone would do nothing.

Firox November 17th, 2013 5:28 AM

I have a couple, a few times I have hard time deciding whether to evolve or not.

Mienfoo! I love Mienfoo [cutest fighting type ever] but I also love Mienshao [my #2 favorite], so it's very tough decision on evolution or not.

Dewott is another hard to evolve or not (by decision), I like Samurott but I love Dewott.

Purrloin, I love that dark feline, but I also love Liepard.

Buizel or Floatzel! I love both of them, that decision is hard to make.

Recently I started to love Zigzagoon but I still love Linoone too.

Another one (similar reason to Mienfoo above) is Patrat. I love that cute Pokemon, but Watchog is my #1 favorite, at times I can't decide, evolve or not.

Shizzable November 17th, 2013 5:41 AM

I never really did that for fear of having Pokemon that are too weak, but I do think Scraggy is cooler than Scrafty.

Kikaito plush November 17th, 2013 5:50 AM

I will never evolve an Togetic in a togekiss because Togetic is better than a togekiss.

Sopheria November 17th, 2013 5:57 AM

Glad I'm not the only one! And at level 50 he has officially learned all the moves a Misdreavus will ever learn by leveling up, so I've lost that excuse :P I think I'll just breed a second Misdreavus and evolve that one. Adorable as Misdreavus is, MIsmagius has some great stats, so I could definitely use one on my team.

Blastin'Tyruntz November 17th, 2013 6:06 AM

Yes, I had a Pichu in White i didn't want to evolve because as much as i hate saying that, it is the hard truth: PIKACHU IS UGLY.

LoudSilence November 17th, 2013 6:16 AM

Mine is Scyther. Luckily he has stats good enough to stay relevant, but he's the only Pokemon I never went out of my way to evolve. I honestly think he looks much cooler than Scizor.

pompayyy November 17th, 2013 11:24 AM

I can't stand Blastoise, but I love Wartortle. I know the poor guy is often overlooked, but he looks so cool.

Sydian November 17th, 2013 1:33 PM

Plenty of times! I'm not a huge fan of Blastoise, so boom. Wartortle. I love Petilil, so stick an Eviolite on her and EV her in Sp. Att a bit so she can hold her own, and she's fine! I'm gonna raise a Braixen in X eventually to keep as Braixen. I've gone to the E4 in FR with an Eevee before, but that was because I was saving it to evolve to Umbreon once I could trade with RSE. I have Nidorina and Nidorino on my Blue team. And let's not even talk about how lovely Dragonair is compared to Dragonite.

Basically, I use NFEs quite a bit. Not always because I don't like their final evos, but just for fun. :P

Juno November 17th, 2013 3:42 PM

In R/S, I kept my Torchic from evolving for the longest time, because -unpopular opinion time- really not a fan of how Combusken and Blaziken looks. I get that the evolutionary line is supposed to look like chickens, but Blaziken just looks like he has flowing blonde hair and bell-bottom furrypants to me.

Thief November 17th, 2013 3:59 PM

May I direct you to the main Pokémon in question, without a doubt...

Dragonair.

I love Dragonair. Aside from Hydreigon it's my favourite Dragon. & Then it evolves into a chubby derpy Charizard. Not saying it's not cute, but they could have at least kept a similar colour scheme to its pre-evos.

braixen November 17th, 2013 5:44 PM

i felt that way with my braixen; i didn't want to evolve it at all, but i ended up doing it anyways. though i'm not going to evolve my shiny fennekin all the way to delphox because braixen is my favorite pokemon.

PumpJack November 17th, 2013 8:12 PM

Dragonair > Dragonite
Rhyhorn > Rhydon >>>>> Rhypherior
Glameow > Purrugly
Magneton > Magnezone

I think that's about it.

Rothometapratis November 17th, 2013 9:14 PM

Actually yes. I had a Wingull in emerald which I didn't want to evolve, because I hated the design of Pelipper. I kept pushing B for several turns, but I finally gave in and let it evolve, because I wanted my pokemon to be strong.

Hikamaru November 17th, 2013 9:48 PM

I usually evolve my Pokemon to fill the Dex, if I want to keep something unevolved I'd just breed another one of the species I want, like how I decided to breed an extra Oshawott on my Black version and gave the thing an Everstone so I can forever adore his cuteness. Problem solved.

Meganium November 17th, 2013 9:48 PM

Dragonair, Wingull, and Minccino are three Pokemon that I refused to evolve because they're so much better than their final evolutions. Even if they're weak and start learning different moves than their evolved forms, I'll still refuse to evolve.

I might add Braixen to that list as well.

I did the same thing actually. Kept my Torchic through my playthrough of Ruby. Not a fan of its evolutions either.

I also tend to keep Ivysaur and Rhyhorn. It's not that I mind Venusaur and Rhydon that much, just think their pre-evolved forms look much cooler. Let's not even talk about Rhypherior.

Alexander Nicholi November 18th, 2013 8:43 AM

I actually did with my Vibrava in Emerald for the longest time. It's just that Vibrava looks so much cooler than Flygon, aesthetically.

Eventually I had to evolve it, though, as it was going to be a team member for my Battle Frontier trio.

Sabrewulf238 November 18th, 2013 9:12 AM

I normally have the final form in mind when I form a team so this doesn't really happen to me.

There are some pokemon I love where I'm not as crazy about their final forms like Numel, Gulpin and Pumpkaboo....but I suck it up and learn to appreciate their evolved forms.

I think that's about it.

Why does everyone hate Rhypherior?!
And Magnezon is uglier than magneton?!

Taemin November 18th, 2013 10:47 AM

Yes. A lot.

xD I like a lot of the pre-evo's, so sometimes I'll just stop their evolution every time, or make them hold an Everstone.

fireflystorm November 18th, 2013 2:43 PM

I refuse to evolve my Braixen. I just... I really dislike Delphox, but Braixen is so cute...
Anyway, definitely Rhyperior, too -- not a fan. I can probably name a few more... I don't like Bibarel or Diggersby. I prefer Skitty to Delcatty as well. Tympole, Glameow, Dragonair (though I love Dragonite too)...
In summary, I love a lot of pre-evolutions design-wise, so sometimes I sacrifice the "evolution power-up" for aesthetics. What can I say? I just love cute Pokemon.

sh1nyzorua November 18th, 2013 3:26 PM

I never want to evolve my starters. They start out as cutie babies and I want them to stay as cute babies. . . I didn't evolve my Chikorita until about 50. My Tepig, well I didn't actually know what it evolved into so I figured "Why not". . . Bad idea >.> I'm definitely NOT going to evolve my Fennekin when I get Pokemon X. Fennekin is too cute to evolve.

BadPokemon November 19th, 2013 4:35 AM

I don't want to evolve my Pikachu in Pokemon Y. It is much better looking than Raichu, but less powerful. I'm going to give it a light ball and EV train it for defenses and special defense so it won't be a glass cannon.

MiniMinun November 19th, 2013 4:59 AM

I always thought that Dewott looked better then Samurott... But I always ended up evolving it.

And recently in my X, I finally evolved my Doublade into Aegislash, although I kinda miss how cool Doublade looked, especially when it did certain moves.

AliceBlaze November 19th, 2013 5:54 AM

I've always liked Quilava better than Typhlosion even though I always end up evolving it if it's in my team.

When I first played Emerald, I wouldn't evolve my Vigoroth because I thought Slaking looked really ugly, but then I changed my mind when I decided I wanted to complete the pokedex.

In Crystal, I was almost not gonna evolve my Croconaw because I'm not that keen on Feraligatr. In fact I would've even kept it as a Totodile because it's a lot cuter.

Whenever I get a shiny, I evolve it depending on its evolution's colours. If the evolution has better colours than it's pre-evo (such as Charizard and Magcargo) or the same colours (such as Buneary), then I evolve it. If it has dull and boring colours when it evolves (such as Snubbull), then I keep it as it is.

Pike Queen November 19th, 2013 8:38 AM

I do like the way some of 'em look before evolving, but that never stopped me from letting them evolve. I prefer to have stronger, hard hitting Pokemon as opposed to keeping them the way they look.

幕之内 一歩 November 19th, 2013 9:01 AM

Never. There aren't any un-evolved forms I like better than the evolved.

Honestly, I feel like most of the un-evolved forms are lackluster and boring.

I also feel like they meant it to be that way, but that's just me.

Unfortunately his base stats are too low for that to make any difference. You're better off focusing on Sp.Atk and Spd to make him a fast sweeper, hope you can get in a hit before they knock you out.

acatfrommars November 19th, 2013 10:03 AM

Ugh yes, I hate how mgmortar looks. Magmar is one of my favorite pokemon, but I have just never really been fond of magmortar's aesthetics or his moves. I guess Magmortar's but in some competitive aspect, but if I am playing through the game I normally don't have magmar evolve.

That's about all. I like the looks of the final evolved forms as much, or more than the previous. Electivire > Electebuzz , Blissey > Chansey imo.

Trainer Galza November 22nd, 2013 3:08 AM

The only one that I can think of that comes to mind for me is Vigaroth.. mostly on the account of how useless Slaking is.. I do it anyway, because I don't really use Slaking (I can't think of anyone who does off hand) it just seems like such a waste.

I know my girlfriend was crazy about Lilipup.. like she had a whole army of them. I still tease her about it from time to time :P

Imperator161 November 22nd, 2013 1:55 PM

In Gold, I never evolved my Totodile because I thought the sprites for Croconaw and Feraligatr looked ugly. Sure, that made my team a lot weaker, but I got through the game fine anyway, and I never intended to use him in competitive battles. I also waited to evolve my Hoothoot until level 74 or so because I liked Hoothoot better (though after I evolved it, Noctowl grew on me, and now I prefer the evolved owl). I think the reason why I evolved Hoothoot (several years after getting the game) was probably that I didn't want it to be weak like my Totodile, though.

I've frequently trained Pikachu that I haven't evolved, in all generations. I'll often train a Raichu separately, though (although at the moment in X, I actually have only put time into training Pikachu, not Raichu). With light ball, Pikachu isn't that weak (for in-game, anyway), and it's cute.

Aside from Pikachu, I tend to evolve all of my Pokémon now, even if they look better in their earlier stages. I guess I care more about their power and the competitive elements of Pokémon than I did when I was younger. That's been the case since gen III or so.

SaniOKh November 22nd, 2013 2:32 PM

Seems like I'm not the only one who didn't want to evolve Quilava :) . I always end up letting it evolve, but I just don't like the "Grr, look how mean I am" face Typhlosion constantly has.

Outlier November 22nd, 2013 2:33 PM

Bulbasaur my favourite pokemon.

Aromatisse November 24th, 2013 5:06 PM

I prevented Mikey the Munchlax from evolving, but one time I pressed B and he evolved into Snorlax anyway?

It worked out for the best, because Snorlax's speed is really bad, but Munchlax's is basically nonexistent.

I'm working on breeding Munchlaxes right now, actually. Once I find the perfect cutie/a shiny Munchlax, he'll be getting my everstone and he'll stay adorable forever.

I'm sorry, but Munchlax is the cutest Pokemon in the entire game. And he is SO much fun to play with in Poke Amie. Aesthetically, I prefer Munchlax over Snorlax. :)

Venitardus November 24th, 2013 5:43 PM

I don't evolve my Ivysaur or Wartortle unless I need/want the data for Venasaur and Blastoise. I like the design of Ivysaur and Wartortle better then their evolved forms. And their faster than their evolved forms, too.

I don't evolve my Bayleaf ever. Out of its evolutionary line, it have the best design. The others just look odd and never appealed to me.

darkredwing November 24th, 2013 5:49 PM

Only time I don't evolve a Pokemon is an Eevee. I always have at least one Eevee for completion when I'm training eeveelution party/ies

Shadeh November 24th, 2013 5:55 PM

Snivy, just because of his Smug Animation, Where he crosses his armes due and nods, like a bad a**

Patrick November 24th, 2013 6:27 PM

Yes. Most of my Pokemon aren't evolved into the final forms.

Altair November 25th, 2013 9:41 PM

I've never had this dilemma until today actually.
I didn't want to evolve Braixen into Delphox, not just because of how it looks, but when it attacks with its 'wand' he spins it back into his tail.
It's an awesome animation haha, but now I'm with Delphox who just takes out his wand 'swish's and flicks' then places it back into his side...

ShivaDF November 25th, 2013 9:44 PM

I used to feel this way all the time, but not anymore. I know I was hesitant to evolve Wartortle, Piplup, Torchic, and countless others, but then I got over it. I mean, they were the same pokemon I loved before, so I invariably ended up liking them just as much. ^_^

S3venAces November 25th, 2013 10:49 PM

Deino and Zweilous for me...despite their final evolution being a beast. Literally.

DanteSolablood November 26th, 2013 3:13 AM

I agree with many people here that I much prefer Braixen to Delphox... not only is Braixen super-kawaii but it(she) has much cooler animations. I've deliberately bred myself some new female Fennekins so I can have a female Braixen in my party.

Of course some good IVs etc would be nice too. :D
