"Make a huge smile"

Does anyone else have trouble getting certain aspects of Pokemon Amie to work?

For instance, whenever I get to the point where the game tells me to smile, or make a face, I find the pokemon starring at me, and eventually get bored and saddened all the while I'm sitting here like an idiot trying to achieve the most extreme exaggerated smile in hopes the camera will pick it up

Is there a trick to making it work?

Happens to me too. I've found that moving the camera either closer or further away helps. I know that's kinda vague but it's not always the same one. :D

I've never successfully "smiled" in Pokemon Amie either. :P Which is fine, since I just tend to do the same things over and over until I max out affection. Pokepuffs and petting until hearts stop flying, do two puzzles, repeat.

I see, alright, I'll give that a try, thank you!

Whenever I think that it's going to initiate the camera games, I quickly cover the camera because I am not going to sit there making faces like an idiot while the Pokemon can't see my face. Then it gets sad and depressed, making me feel guilty. They really need to work on the facial recognition for that feature to truly shine, but the state it is in now is pathetic, tbh.

Believe it or not, this feature actually works spectacularly...sometimes... The camera does pick up your movements, but its too small to adequately recognize your facial expressions. I have occasionally been able to make faces for my Pokemon and get a reaction from them, but it's hard to keep them entertained beyond one or two times.

I haven't made it to this part of the game, but from what you're telling me, I think the best answer would be what Christopher said: hold the 3DS either closer to your face or further away.

I can't wait to grin like an idiot at my pokes. xD But if the recognition it terrible, as most of you say, then I will probably stick to maxing affection with the best Pokepuffs, petting and Unlimited Berry Picker. ^^

Lighting probably helps as well, as I've seen people suggest playing the facial regocnition game in brighter surroundings. I've never been able to make it appear on my Pokemon amie. Maybe because I don't know how far or how close to have the camera from my face. Either way, I'm not going to try it and look like a complete idiot, smiling and winking and making kissy faces at my game; no matter how much I love my Poke' pals. It's embarrassingly silly, even in the comfort of my own home.
Arceus, can you imagine doing that in public?

This game is difficult. {XD}. Especially if you are wearing glasses and they ask you to close one eye >_> I never play that game.

Firox November 30th, 2013 9:00 AM

Only twice I have successfully completed the Face Recognition game.

The only best advice has probably been given, moving the 3DS a little at angles has higher chances of it working and having a bright light on your face helps too - the only part I have trouble with is when the game wants me to make the 'Kissy Face' no matter how hard I try it just doesn't want to work for me.

When it does work it's a lot of fun, makes me smile.

braixen November 30th, 2013 10:50 AM

I generally didn't have any problems with it, except for the "close one eye" ones.

Apparently I am incapable of making "Huge Smiles".... :l

And most of the time I have to take my glasses off for it to recogniz my face and squint really hard to see what's next after I get an expression right.

Sucks being me QAQ

You can actually do it from the very beginning of the game. Just hit the right trigger which should bring up the Amie screen, and click on your pokemon.

I ended up getting it to work :D it's still a little finicky. It has difficulty reading my straight face but it doesn't ask me to do that often. I'm glad the 3ds has a slightly shiny surface above the screen where I can see my face for perspective.
