Let's Debunk Some Junk ~Shiny Edition~
I searched but couldn't find another thread like this one.
X and Y still have that new game smell and like any new pokemon game rumors abound. I've stalked around the interwebs reading post after post, blog after blog, on the new ways/tricks to catch shinies. Some of these site were reputable, some were fly by night who will lose their domain names within the month. I figured that PokeCommunity being one of the most reputable pokemon forums there is, we could run an informal study so to speak. Simply put there are numerous rumors about how to make shinies appear more often. I want to know if any of you fine pokemon fans would help me either prove or disprove them. These methods include but are not limited to:
I'm sorry if this doesn't belong here or if the information I seek to gather here already exists, I'm sorry and would be grateful if you linked me to it. |
Not sure if its helpful or not. But I found a shiny in my second run on x before tipping at all. It neither debunks nor promotes the concept but yeah... I also found a shiny on my first run only tipping 100 and at the time I had only tipped maybe 3 people
|
Well... I'm not going to verify anything as true, but I' ve had some instances. Let me start off by saying, I've played since pokemon came to the states. I have never encountered a shiny until this generation. I have now encountered three. All three came from the friend safari. I thought that was all it was to it, increased safari zone. Then, I read the op and saw the part about the other person being online. I have been level grinding over a box and a half full of pokemon to fill the dex in a Chansey and audino safari. Not a single shiny out of hundreds of battles. This person is also never online. Tonight, after reading this post, I went to a safari of someone online and boom! Fifth battle in was a shiny charmeleon. After thinking about it, the other times had the people online too.
My evidence points to an increased shiny rate for online only friend safari zones but all of that could be just a coincidence. |
Thank you lunis for the info and congrats on the Shiny.
I've just done a test on the "Rod Switch" rumor. I've been fishing on Route 22, note I was surrounded by a rock in front,a rock above and the land below, while surfing. I began with the super rod, after 169 casts I finally hook a Shiny Gyarados, I then switched to the good rod. It took until cast 321 to hook a shiny Goldeen, that's a 152 cast difference. I'm going to test it further as it could just be bad luck on my part but at this point, for me, the rumor has a little more plausibility. This also debunked the "It has to be a shining patch of water" rumor. Though it may make it easier, it is not a requirement. Fairly obvious I thought as the only place with these patches is the ocean, but I've seen people deem it necessary. |
I feel tipping does not affect shiny rates for MM. I tested tipping for the Masuda Method after hearing of successes for Friend Safari tipping, on another forum, during release week. My results, sadly, were not so good.
As I had the guide back then, I knew where most tip receivers were. So before I started to breed my pokemon, with my MM pair already setup, I tipped people literally all over Kalos several times. Each person I tipped usually 5x 1000 pokedollars, with over 60,000 pokedollars total. After I felt like I've finished tipping, I went on to receive my first egg and proceeded to MM. Needless to say from my earlier comment, it turned out that my shiny hatched at #1150. |
I don't think tipping is affecting the shiny rate. I found a shiny Budew the first time I went to Santalune city. Also, I hatched a shiny Noibat via MM and it only took 19 eggs. I tried for a shiny Eevee and after 200+ eggs, still nothing.
I was searching for a shiny Eevee in a friend safari and after some hours, no luck! So, I guess the only thing that can make shinies appear more often is the shiny charm (if there is in this gen too). |

As for the Safari and friends having to be online: I've read mixed opinions on whether it helps if the person is online or not on another forum. Some people encountered shinies without the other person being online but that doesn't mean anything. I have spent some time in the Safari without a single shiny. I never paid attention to Safari owners being online, I guess I'll try that now. |
lol everyone's talking about finding 2974384798 shinies and here I am with none ;~;
I've heard some weird stories about tipping increasing the amount of shinies that you find. I hope that it's true, since there doesn't seem to be any other purpose for it otherwise. |

I have one shiny (from a horde battle) and I think I only tipped about 2 times before I got it. |
People have once claimed that the Shiny rate has doubled to 1/4000+ Not sure if it's true though, but at the rate people are finidng shinies, it might be.
|
The only shinies I've ever found were by chaining with the PokeRadar. But I'll try to score a shiny or two in the friend safari later when my friend is online.

Well after spending more than 4 hours fishing only to get that result I believe I will try the Radar tempo change to shake things up...You can only fish for so long before it starts to get to you. Thank you all for reading this hopefully my next test will yield more promising results. ~Christopher |
