Yup, Monday is my first day of college winter quarter. I remember in high school where we would have to go back to school on the second.

Tsutarja January 3rd, 2014 3:49 AM

Ugh, I hated my junior year in high school. That year, we had to go back on January 2nd, and it pissed me off mainly because my parents were off that day (since New Year's Day in 2012 was on a Sunday). At least the next year though they pushed winter break back another week, and we didn't go back until January 7th, but that also meant a later start to the break as well.

In Australia, Christmas break is 6 weeks and lasts through to the end of January. Weep, suckers :P

I love how we get holidays that long, it's all to make the most of summer where most Australians like to go for a dip in the water, whether it'd be at the beach or a local swimming pool. And of course Australia celebrates its national day near the end of said holidays.

How beautiful.

Tsutarja January 3rd, 2014 5:17 AM

Do you guys have a large break though in June in Australia? Here in the USA when it's summertime, most places have a 12-week break from school :P

I hope you get bitten by one of your many venomous creatures and become incapacitated until the very day you go back, when you are suddenly and miraculously healed. </3

I started work again on boxing day.

Gabri January 3rd, 2014 7:40 AM

I am free of classes through the whole January too.
Instead, I have exams.

Exams that I don't know how the hell will I pass them.

Seki January 3rd, 2014 8:04 AM

I haven't had class since November, and it will continue all the way till February or April. Anyway, wish me luck for my O levels (that national exam) results that I will be collecting in 2 weeks time.

mikey January 3rd, 2014 8:16 AM

I'm off until January 27. I'm enjoying my break now, but eventually I will get bored and actually want to go back to school.

alisaie January 3rd, 2014 8:40 AM

Only off until the weekend is over then it's back to school In which this semester is, quite literally, sink or swim with me since I am the worst student ugh. But I want to do this and I'm very willing to try my best. My classes aren't too bad either; mostly creative which is more up my alley.

Tsutarja January 3rd, 2014 9:12 AM

I start school again on Wednesday, and I can say that I am looking forward to being in school again xD

Legendary Silke January 3rd, 2014 9:31 AM

I'm already two days into my first quarter of the new year...

I like the new lecturer, especially when she starts to wax poetic about C#. (We're still in C++ land, though, and she really doesn't like C++, to say the least.)

C# is basically perfection to her. I hope I get to start working on C# assignments soon.

hughes January 3rd, 2014 11:01 AM

I start classes on Monday. I hate that my college starts so soon because I've only had a 3 week break. Plus I found out one of my classes got cancelled and I literally don't have the room in my schedule to replace it, but I need the credits.

Lucky, I've only had 2! xp

I'm still in high school though. The colleges around here get 3 weeks off as well.

And with me starting school comes job search. *sigh* I'm responding to a job posting just as I'm typing this up and what to say on my cover letter is surely making my brain explode.

Aeroblast January 3rd, 2014 11:23 AM

My "real" semester begins in 27th and winter session starts in 6th.

In the process of doing the same thing. I absolutely hate cover letters. So annoying.

Never had to do a cover letter. Applid at McDonalds and got called the next day. Though they'll literally let anyone work there...

Best of luck to you guys. Hope you guys get the job! :)

What's a cover letter, guys?

It's a introduction to a resume when applying for a job. It normally introduces the applicant's self, explains the purpose for writing the letter, and highlights on the applicant's past experiences and skills that he/she may have for the job. It basically tries to entice the employer to hire them.

^ No I did not copy that. lol

Tsutarja January 3rd, 2014 2:24 PM

Cover letters (and résumés) pretty much sell a person to an employer, and they are a persuasive device used by job applicants towards an employer to help them get a job. Hurts to be me though since I have no job experience, which really limits my chances of getting a job :/

Employers look at cover letters before they look at resumes. Its an important factor because its usually that that has an employer look at your resume in the first place. At least for in cases where there are hundreds and hundreds of resumes for one position. Use that to convince the employer to view your resume by highlighting things about yourself to spark interest in them looking at your resume. Think of it like the back of a book.

The smart thing to do would be to volunteer somewhere and use your experience there to pad your resume work experience and gain a reference and recommendation for your future employment.

Also if you're starting school, consider on campus employment.

I'm about to go through one hell of a semester, with work in the morning and school in the evening. It's a wonderful thing that my manager is able to compromise with my current schedule and allow me to work mostly on weekends once the semester begins, with 1-2 morning shifts thrown during the school week to complete my weekly hours.

I start on the 21st. Back at it as an evening student, because it's awesome going to school at night xD

Honest January 3rd, 2014 5:00 PM

I was wondering about taking night classes. Ended up doing a weird compromise where I have class in the morning, a 4 hour break, then a class at like 6. And that's not even that late.
