Secret Bases!
Secret bases were, for me, one of the aspects that made R/S/E a fun, lively game. It made you feel close to nature which was the main theme of the games: interaction of humans and Pokemon with nature. Once you get the TM Secret Base, you're free to convert certain areas into secret bases.
What did you think about Secret Bases? Did you have a Secret Base? If so, where is it located? (Hopefully this link can help you remember!) I can say that I've had a lot of secret bases! I always thought of them as the second home for my player character, like some place to unwind and relax. Accessories for my base were one of my priorities back then and I would always buy them when I get the chance. I remember the place where I kept my base the longest -- it was somewhere on the routes near Fortree. It had very tall grass protecting it, and yeah. :) (Mods: feel free to move/lock/delete this thread!) |
I liked the idea of Secret Bases because it is a lot like camping, and it make item storage a lot more convenient. I used to have a lot of them, but I think Route 111 (or the entire Mt. Chimney area) was the best area for them.
I loved this feature, and was really upset that it didn't make it to future games... well, it sort of did in D/P/Pt with underground tunnels and such, but... it just didn't have that same feeling, y'know? Anyway, I'm not exactly sure where my base was location, but I do remember it being quite big. I used to customize it a lot and move stuff around from here to there almost every day, haha. One of my most favorite thing about secret bases is that once you mix record with another player, they get added into your game; you could visit them in their base whenever you wanted and have a match. Battling them gave you experience, too, if I remember correctly, so it was a really good way to level-up your Pokémon. :]
I loved secret bases!!! My favorite one that I ever had was on Route 115, in the area that is only accessible by surfing from Rustboro. C: It was really big, because I was lucky enough to have a Lilycove Department Store sale, so I could get some boards to cover the holes in there! I also loved how you could mix records with other players and see their bases... I remember I mixed records with my nephew, and I was unable to beat his trainer, since the first Pokemon in his party was a level 100 Swampert. XD
I loved them and was very sad to see that they didn't make it to the later games. I can't remember where mine was, as it was a very long time ago, but I hope that one day they will be implemented into a game, or if they make Pokémon emerald on 3DS, they definitely shouldn't forget that feature.
I used to absolutely love the Secret Base feature of RSE. There were a handful of kids in my school who also played those Pokémon games (literally, two other kids), and it was awesome once we'd figured out that our Secret Bases transferred to each others games and we could battle each other daily for a tonne of experience. For me it was nice, because the fact that there were no real uber-trainers (like Red in GSC) to defeat in RSE (except Steven in Emerald) after the league was done was something I missed. This way, I could mix records with friends when they had an outrageously strong team, and just train against them every day. And it was pretty fun to discover the crazy big/fun items that you could put in there.
I think my favourite place used to be the tree on Route 114, on the left side. It was a nice symmetrical base, and reasonably spacey. I used to use the Note tiles to make little melodies as you entered and exited the base. :) |
In the later years I've never really cared too much for the secret bases, since I usually try to save up my money for healing items for the E4 during the main playthrough, and often don't end up doing much in the post-game, thus never really getting around to actually doing anything with the secret bases. I used to really like decorating them when I was younger though, along with my friends, and we'd usually compare our bases to see who we thought had the coolest one. It often meant a lot of pokedollars blown on decoration though, haha. We quickly got bored with them though, so it often meant a few gaps between comparing the bases.
I can't quite remember which one that was my favourite, but I remember I'd usually just go looking for the largest one, which meant even more money spent on the base, due to more space to fill out, haha. Quote:
I remember I had a base in which I had three tiles to walk on and the rest was just pokedolls... happy days
I had an secret base outside the safari zone with an Slide and shelf with three pokedolls.
I think my secret base was on the island where I caught my one and only Feebas. But I don't really remember anything other than that. I just know that I didn't add that much to it and my friends always had better ones than me.
I always made one in a place by the water like east of Fortree by the Kecleon. But after I made it I usually never game back or put anything in it haha.
I always built mine in the far northwestern corner of Rt.119...the grass pile that requires Waterfall and extensive use of the Acro Bike to even get to. XD
Since decorations were fairly limited in R/S/E, I never really fully decorated it. XD ...just another reasin why I'm so hungry for a Hoenn remake. :P |
My favorite place to put my Secret Base was on Route 116 in the small opening area with the BlackGlasses trainer, because the area seems very easy to miss. I don't think anyone I mixed records with ever found my base.
I always loved making secret bases :P The usual spot where I always make it is in the tree on the small island below Mauville City near New Mauville. I find that place really unique for some reason haha. It's really spacious as well!
Spoiler:
Yeah, you see that small island right below the north cycling gate? The one with the only tree and the sign on it? That's the place! I always bought decorations for my base in the Slateport marketplace such as mats, Pokemon dolls, tables and chairs. I spend quite some time there whenever I can. It's kinda like a private little place for me to chill and hang out with myself. |
i love secret bases, my favorite one was right of fortree city, where the kecleon is, i decorated almost once a week band new with a certain moto.
OMG I absolutely loved the Secret Base aspect in these games!! :3 I always made one immediately when I got the TM Secret Power ^_^ Most of the time you could find my Secret Base in a cave thingy near a beach or water ;) I just liked the view :3
I crammed it with cute dolls, posters, a desk and other fun stuff like a tent or a slide (rofl). When I got my first Clear Out Sale in the game (after the league, you could buy the most amazing stuff for your Secret Base), I bought the whole place out immediately I was like a kid in a candy store! xD I was also happy that this aspect kinda returned in the Gen.4 games, where you could make a base in Sinnoh Underground (heck, even with a TV!), too bad this didn't return in Gen.6, hopefully it will in the future! :3 |
Secret Bases were AWESOME!! I really wish they would bring them back in some way or another in future games...or in the RSE Remakes! I loved to find new spots where i could create my secret base, and no matter how happy i was with a place, whenever i found a new spot i had to try it out and see :D I especially liked the ones in trees, and if possible close to some body of water.
Will these clear out sales occur if the internal battery is dead?.....
I really liked them, it's a shame some kid stole my Pokemon game and Gameboy in 2nd grade. ♥♥♥♥ that kid... Well anyways it's really cool, too bad I play on an emulator.
Secret bases were awesome! I really wish they would have kept them throughout the series :( Anyway, you could find my secret base in the desert area, you had to use the mach bike to get there. I had like every prop available XD including those glass tables and chairs that you had to walk through the ashes to get. I actually still have my secret base, I never reset my game so its still on my old emerald game.
Ho-ray Jump, and spin-mats every where!!!
I had totally forgotten about secret bases until you mentioned them. I always thought Generation 3 was good in terms of giving you replay value with many things to do (Emerald especially).
Nevver really made use of it Lol.
Don't know why Exactly. |
I actually enjoyed the secret bases in Ruby, Sapphire and Emerald. I recall my favorite location to build a secret base was the cave in the Northeast corner of Route 115. So in order to get there, you needed both a Pokemon that knew Surf and the Mach Bike.
One of many reasons why I want RSE remade, honestly. I really want to see this feature in a more contemporary gameplay. (For the record I liked the underground bases in Sinnoh as well)
It was such a fun feature and a great time killer. Getting the information of other trainers to have customized battles is just an icing on the cake. |
Secret bases were amazing. Mixing records with friends made it so exciting as we had a whole village in Route 115. We would also try and buy every decoration item in the game, then design the hut like a gym then battle their teams like they are leaders.
Secret Bases in RSE was really a fun feature to have... Even now when I'm playing with my phone my friends and I usually battle then decorate our secret bases like some sort of gym leader and then battle again! I always win though... besides from that I always try to buy all of the decoration items that could be found.. it's a shame that it's limited to only 16?(can't remember) decorations in a base... and I never found out how to cover the holes in my secret bases XD..
I never really thought it was necessary, but it was fun.
That's all I have to say. |
I enjoyed this feature, and it was sad they never appeared again after 4th Gen. I did like trying out different locations when it came to where I wanted my Secret Base to be, but I think I enjoyed the ones inside of bushes or trees the best.
The ability to make secret bases is the feature that I miss the most about the RSE games. My friends and I used to enjoy mixing our records together and spending the next hour or two trying to find each other's bases, and then battling whoever was in the base :)
My two routes of choice for secret bases were Route 111 and Route 119. When I had the mach bike, my base would be set up at the spot near by the desert, near the edge of the sand where the black belt trainer is. However I preferred the spot at Route 119 more. It's the one north of the weather institute above the waterfall and past the acro bike bridges. Because I used the mach bike more, it was definitely a chore when I had to switch to the acro every time I wanted to get to my base, but it was well worth it because of how difficult the base is to access. |
I really enjoyed this feature in both Gen.3 and 4. I don't know why they didn't use this feature on this current generation.
Secret bases were awesome. They were so addictive and they really gave you a sense of achievement if you pulled one off well. I really liked the various places you could hide it, and that one ninja boy always reminded you were it was. I remember searching for the perfect base everywhere I went, and buying dolls and mats like crazy. Gen IV was a ripoff okay, but I don't see the point of making a "Secret Base" underground. It should be somewhere above, right?
I think mine might've been in the same space as yours, right by Fortree where the news reporters battle you. I spent a long time decorating it after I beat the game and I'd check every day for rooftop "blowout" sales and buy a ton of items. It was a fun place to "chill" and just one of those cool side features in games that added replay value before the advent of online play. I actually mixed records with one friend and we found each others' bases and battled!
I changed the location of all my bases depending on my location in the fame,it was so fun,I,with 5 years old almost destroyed my GBA when I encountered that kid who tels ehere your base is.I feeled violated.
//=========================================================// So,I have a Wish,I Wish that someone make a Hack that you is the rival(I'd maek one,but i don't know howand i can't see any tutorial because i'm from Brazil,so my english) |
I LOVED the secret bases, I always made mine in the little island between Mauville and New Mauville since it was huge in there and awesome.
They were awesome and I wish they had carried it on. |
Why not follow in later games? I loved to create your own database objects ye go shopping, I had fun ...
Secret bases were awesome! I liked to have mine on Route 119; you needed Surf and/or an Acro Bike to access it. It often rained on that route, which was a bonus. Despite that, I often chose different locations so I always forgot where my base was.
Secret Bases in R/S/E were a nice addition. I utilized this feature across Ruby & Sapphire cartridges to keep records of a prized team from each instance I restarted the adventure in Ruby. I used easy-access locations close to towns for this as it was extremely unlikely any one of my friends would use such a location for a base that is supposed to be secret.
I had a lot of different secret bases throughout my Sapphire game; I changed around a lot but I always picked secluded ones that you have to Surf to and such because I thought that made it more "secret". :P
I made mine near Fortree and near Mauville on the island. I really liked the secret bases and mine were pretty cool and decorated. :) Although it was a shame I could only share my base with myself, haha.
I really loved the secret bases in Hoenn.
When I first discovered them in the game I was so amazed that I could make my own little spot in different places within nature. I always chose to place mine inside of trees because the inside looked the best to me. I love this aspect and all but sadly I never really made use out of it in my games. I'd use it for a little while then forget about it entirely. ;A; It's probably because I wasn't so good about decorating or getting furniture as a kid... I really need to go back and try to make an actually good base for a change... OTL; |
I like Secret Bases.
Mine is at the south of the Mauville City and the Cycling Road. Near New Mauville, on the little island. |
Secret bases remain one of my favorite features in Pokemon to this day. It was a little confusing for me at first, but once I got the hang of it, I was hooked. Decorating for hours on end, I slaved over my various bases to make them as pretty and comfortable as possible. Although I sometimes regret spending so much time on a rather useless feature, it was nice to have a kind of building mechanic in a Pokemon game.
One of the best features ever, indeed. They aren't very useful but they are fun.
Now that I restarted Sapphire, I still need to decide on a nice spot. I want somewhere by the ocean but with berry trees nearby. I'll be scouting ;) |
It's definitely a feature I hope to see return/be expanded on in the remakes. I really liked how when you did a record mix with someone they would appear in their secret base with their team for you to challenge. There is some great potential now we can connect our devices to the internet. I'd love to get dozens of other people's bases in my game with trainers for me to challenge.
I loved the secret bases. In partciluar I also liked how you could mix people's records and go to their secret bases and battle them and get experiance points. Looking back now it sounds like a great way to ev train a pokemon if you can set it up right.
I had so much fun on the musical tiles. Trying to play songs with the notes. And the dolls. Now my bedroom looks more like my secret base. |
Yeah i agree that secret base made ruby sapphire and emerald a gold time games. But i was not sooo excited about the secret base. I used to live a while in a secret base. To store my dolls and toys and cution etc. It was a great day. And then i got it little boring.
Oh God I still act as thought the Secret Bases are my houses in Hoenn. I get one in particular every single time and always decorate it the exact same way lol. The Secret Basses were just so cute, and I love pretending like I'm actually in the game while in one just lazing around in there watching TV on my Skitty shaped TV while laying on my giant Wailmer Doll. <3

I loved the idea of Secret Bases; last I recall, my SB in Ruby and Emerald are on the beach near Mauville, on the side where Fortree and Lilycove and all those places are. Loved decorating them a lot; I'd have at least a billion plushes in them XD (Well, more like three--loved having all three Hoenn starter plushes in it.) I also liked being able to go to others' Secret Bases and battling them/seeing how theirs were laid out; however, I lacked a GBA Link Cable and was nearing that point where other people around my age were starting to dislike Pokemon, so I didn't have many people I could mix records with :<
I could never find it, shame on me eh :/
Secret bases are luv. Secret bases are lyf
Never really went into them that much, but I did definitely have one. It was the one near the entrance of that place where you could catch Solrock/Lunatone, haha. Probably the most common one >_< |
I honestly do not remember where my secret base was... if I played again I might remember though.
The secret base aspect was fun, even though at the time I only had one friend who could find mine. I really like customizing rooms and such, and it's a shame that the feature no longer exists, at least in the form I would like. Yeah, we had the Underground in D/P/Pt, but that didn't seem as fun. If we had Nintendo WFC in R/S/E era, I think potential would be limitless. But alas, that's why I keep my GBA around. |
Oh man, secret bases were awesome. It really sucks that they got rid of them, they were really cool. Sure, there was the underground in D/P/P, but it didn't have the same feel to it. I really hope they bring them back in OR/AS. ^^
Yeah I remember mine. I tried it out, but I wasn't to impressed. I rather explore the world.
I loved making secret bases. Only thing that made me mad was that I could use it to heal my Pokemon. That would have been awesome. However, I can see why they didn't make that a feature, you could just easily cheat the game by level grinding and healing. For my personal reasons, I'd have liked it so I didn't have to go back to the Pokemon center constantly when I was in the routes. I usually set mine up with a 1/3, 1/3, 1/3 combo. One Third for Fire, One Third for Ice/Water, and One Third for Grass. Was a great way to be a bit artistic in game. R/S/E Can you guess which types were associated to which game? |
I freaking LOVE the secret bases! currently, my secret base is between meteor falls and fallarbor town, next to the kindler guy (cant remember his name). the inside of the base looks like a giant spiral shape. I get sort of Stircrazy after a while and migrate from place to place at least once a week and redesign my base every time, trying to get that perfect look to it. I used to say red/blue (or in this case) FrLg was the absolute best of them all, until I discovered RSE, they've captured my full attention and I have no desire to move ahead or back to any generations. BEST GEN EVER!
I loved the Secret Bases. The fact that you could make your own, personalized little space almost anywhere was so appealing. I used to look everywhere to find the most isolated bases on Hoenn and I usually chose the northernmost base on the map that needs waterfall and the acro bike :D. My favorite decorations were the glass ornament from the contests and the plants from the flower shop and in fortree (also spent a little too much time collecting ashes lol). Unfortunately I didn't have the opportunity to share records with anyone haha. From jumping straight from Gen. 3 to Gen.6 I was really upset and nostalgic to see it didn't survive; I'm rooting for RES to be remade :D.
I thought secret bases were awesome. I always tried to make my secret base in a tree and somewhat isolated. For me the perfect secret base would be a tree or bush, in its own little niche, and somewhat hard to notice but walking distance within a city. The bush near the pond west of lilycove was my base for a while but im still looking for a new one.
I remember as kids, my cousin and I would trade each other's pokemon and level them up and trade them back to each other. Doing so made us want to try mixing records and we ended up getting each other's secret bases. I was always jealous of my cousin because he would always get more achievements done in Ruby than I did in Sapphire so he got all the cool furniture for his secret base. I still loved being able to battle his pokemon even when we weren't hanging out thanks to having his secret base in my save file.
Ahh, I remember the bases. Mine was usually in that rainy, grassy patch near Fortree. When I was younger, my friends and I got together and made gyms out of our secret bases. It was awesome.
If there were a way to share secret bases with friends--such as customizing the house together when connected with link-cable and whatnot--I feel that it would have been pretty nice, and I'm sure a lot of other people would've appreciated it as well. It's not exactly a huge deal, though; just a minor idea that possibly could have helped make the feature better than it is.
Hope they're able to implement such a thing in their remakes! |
