"Kill It!" Favorite Boss Battles

What are your favorite video game boss battles?

One of mine is Stallord from LoZ Twilight Princess. Not only was it from one of the coolest dungeon designs in my opinion, but the battle took one of the most useless items in gaming history and made a very unique and interesting boss battle out of it.

The final one in GTA V is really fun and so is the final one in Saints Row the Third. You go all around the city killing bad people but the fact you have the entire city is fun.

I really liked going up against Demise in Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword. The place where you fought him was pretty interesting, and the Demise himself was pretty challenging, too. Took me almost a week to finally get him beaten. Now, though, whenever I fight hum, he's not that tough anymore; guess I've gotten a little used to his moves and all. xD"

Sydian March 6th, 2014 3:22 PM

It's really fun to combo the hell out of Fassad in Mother 3. No matter which time it is that you fight him, it's great just beating him up because he's such a jerk.

Savior or Safer Sephiroth form Final Fantasy VII because of the awesom music.

Also Death from the castlevania series, just a great boss before dracula.

The Grim Reaper from the original NES Castlevania game is bloody tough as nails. Him and his boomerang scythes >_>" ...that satisfaction you get when you beat him though *whistles*

Apparently, Safer Sephiroth is best known for his weapons of math destruction. (yes, math)

Aside from that, Larsa (Mushihimesama Futari), Hibachi (DoDonPachi), and Evaccaneer DOOM (Ketsui). Don't care how many times I die to them, nor how many continues I use. It's their attack patterns that gained notoriety on the internet. Either way, not only does these fights give me a great challenge, but it definitely keeps me out of boredom. Who knows, if you can at least stand up to it in the public audience, you just might get something out of it... (albeit not my intent, but I had others requesting to watch me attempt it in person...)

Mr. Mind March 7th, 2014 12:25 AM

Bowletta from Mario & Luigi superstar saga. Just the fusion from cackletta and bowser looks awesome. The music is great and halfway you can even battle inside of her body.

Phantom March 7th, 2014 2:47 AM

Oooo OOooo ooo.

I gotta go with the Great Grey Wolf Sif from Dark Souls.

Elaitenstile March 7th, 2014 3:07 AM

Fighting the Ender Dragon in Minecraft? Lol, that took a hell lot of planning, and a lot of luck. I had to look into the internet 14 times for help.

Homura Akemi March 7th, 2014 3:27 AM

Porky Minch! from the Earthbound series! It was fun having a handicap to using your bare fists and PSI moves that only attack 1 enemy (basically leaving you to just PSI Freeze; most of the others hit more than one. If you used one of those, it got bounced back ;-;)

That, and the battle against Kogasa Tatara and Flandre Scarlet in Touhou 12: Undefined Fantastic Object's Stage 2/Extra and Touhou 6: Embodiment of Scarlet Devil Extra modes respectively. They were just fun to battle, particularly Flandre. Her Agatha Christie references (even in her damn theme song, U.N Owen was Her?) make her quite the different character to the rest of the series, while Kogasa's character's, well...like a ghost's. More the stereotyped ghost, the one that goes around scaring people. "Boo!" has become her catchphrase. Especially in the extra stage, where she serves as the mid boss. She basically surprises you out of nowhere.

Along with that, Princess Shroob from Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time. She's amazingly strong, and Elder Shroob's even stronger...at least her theme's just fantastic.

My favorite boss battles are probably the Auditio in Bayonetta: Fortitudo, Temperantia, Iustitia and Saptientia. They're super difficult, awful being you feel great satisfaction in murdering and their tactics vary so it doesn't feel like the same battle over and over. I also enjoyed battling against the Boss's Cobra Unit for many of the same reasons as the Auditio. Also all of the bosses in the original Paper Mario were great! And of course to finish it off the initial battle against my favorite black mage Seymour in FFX was so shocking that it still resonates with me to this day.

The hardest boss battle, koff~

That would have to be Colonel Mael Radec on Elite. Mael Radec is not only the most competent military leader in the Helghast regime, he's also the most lethal. Never before have I seen an FPS game where the baddie successfully terminates several main characters singlehandedly. Jan Templar, Evelyn, Garza, the entire crew of the New Sun, and if you weren't there to pick up his hary bum, Rico would be added to the list as well. Oh, and he also nuked the city of Pyrrhus to kill the ISA invaders. Killzone 2 remains as the hardest FPS game I have ever played. Radec is cool, koffi~

edit: Radec is so Bad, that there is even a trophy, Demon Slayer, for killing him in less than 20 minutes. And that's not easy on the higher difficulties.

Best boss battle ever was Akylios in Rift ... when it was current content. He was like the end boss of a gigantic 12 boss dungeon. The fight was 30 minutes long and if you got close and wiped you had to start all over again. This required teamwork with 20 other people and had three platforms you had to jump to. If you fell you died and were permanently out of the fight. It took several months for anyone to kill, and most players didn't actually kill this boss until the next level of content was released. I still miss Akylios.

"But does it matter? I am so gonna kick your ass." - Yuri
"No no no no, I'm gonna kick your ass." - Flynn

Yuri vs Flynn. Tales of Vesperia. More specifically the PS3 version.

One vs. One. Mano-a-mano. Seriously, one of the best boss fights in all of the Tales series. It's two good rivals going against each other. Depending on the difficulty you're on, one mess up could possibly make you lose the fight. Honestly, it was heart-pounding the first time I did this fight on Hard as I don't think I was particularly high-level, and PS3 Flynn is a lot harder than 360 Flynn. Plus, the kick ass battle theme, Fury Sparks is playing in the background.

I actually keep a save file that's just before this boss battle if I ever want to play it again LOL.

The End, ha you can beat him so many ways it's so fun. Man they were so clever with that game.

Koloktos - Zelda: Skyward Sword

That is easily the best boss fight in Skyward Sword. =)

...but ya know, out of all the bosses I've fought, I'm not sure what my favorite boss battle is.

Calamitastrophe March 9th, 2014 10:55 AM

The classic battle with Red on Mt. Silver is pretty sweet.

Scandalice March 11th, 2014 10:38 PM

I enjoyed the battle with Hooktail in Paper Mario: TTYD, a badge being her weakness was interesting. Cortez from the same game was tricky but fun to fight with all of his body parts. Rawk Hawk had amazing battle music!

Also any battle with Zagi in Tales of Vesperia. His insanity and what he says makes everything that much better.
"I am going to kill you and carve your name into my blood!"

PMG March 12th, 2014 7:06 PM

Motley Bossblob from Super Mario 3D World has been a fun boss for me, especially when he pops out of his big ol' stomping form, and you get to use the Double Cherry.

Also most of the second/third to last bosses from the Assassin's Creed series, like Robert de Sable or Bartholomew Roberts. Most of these fights end up being either amazing one-on-one duels, or in the case of Roberts it's a crazy ship battle before you board his ship and take him on man-to-man.

Let's see...

1. Final Fantasy X- Jecht
Jecht to this day is my number one favorite boss battle. Final Fantasy was my first real RPG besides pokemon. The fight progressed from "WTF" when he jumped off the platform, to oh **** when he came up in his giant aeon form, to "seriously?" when he pulls that giant sword out of his chest and gets a boost in hp, to me crying once I killed him. And the music wasn't too bad either.

2. Pokemon Gold- Red
Sorry. It was awesome as a little kid when I first saw Red and the feeling stuck with me.

3. Illusion Of Gaia/Time - Solid Arm
Okay, this was just wow. The mansion is full of the strongest monsters and when I first got there I thought you had to defeat all the monsters and stuff, so I died a few times and then the boss was hard as heck for me.

Darkwing Ducklett March 31st, 2014 10:13 PM

The Dracula and Death battle in Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin. Two bosses that are pretty much a series staple, combined into one frantic melee in a room far too small for it, is both exhilarating and terrifying. The second form is a bit of a let-down, but the first, when they're separate and unleashing frequent attacks both individually and as a team, is unforgettable, and why the game is my favourite to date in the Castlevania series.

The second battle with Yuga in The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds is one that I've come to love recently as well. Yuga is easily one of the more interesting Zelda villains despite his minimal appearance in the game - a little narcissism sometimes goes a long way - and his battle theme is absolutely fantastic.

The fourth battle with Seifer in Final Fantasy VIII is a favourite of mine as well, if only because of what happens to Odin if you happen to have obtained him by that point. The poetic justice of the whole fight appeals to me immensely.

Yuga was an amazing boss. You really feel the annoyance of the wall merge, something you rely on so much in the game, used against you.

In general, the Zelda series has the best boss fights.

Judge Mandolore Shepard April 1st, 2014 4:21 AM

When it comes to favorite boss battles, among my favorites would be the ones against Gilgamesh in Final Fantasy V. Starting with the second boss battle against him, one the best battle themes in the game, "Clash on the Big Bridge" is playing.

Another favorite boss battle of mine in Final Fantasy V is the first boss battle against Exdeath. You fight against him using Galuf alone. It is impossible to lose that boss battle since Galuf is badass enough to keep fighting at 0, let me repeat that, at 0 HP.

Yukari April 1st, 2014 8:05 AM

Honestly I'm not sure... But Ironically enough Boss battles are one of the most important parts of a video game to me...

El Héroe Oscuro April 15th, 2014 7:14 PM

I had a fun time recently with Kuromori, the 8th colossus in Shadow of the Colossus. He's the first boss in the game where things start to get real, where the colossus actually starts to fight back and makes you feel like you're in a very perilous situation. Plus the very rapid movements and attacks from him, as well as the cool Colosseum-like arena in which you fight him in made it an epic battle that I'll surely remember for some time.

Battle starts around 3:30 if you want to check it out.

Clemstar April 15th, 2014 7:21 PM

Demyx. Kingdom Hearts 2. Bring on the remaster!

Squirrel April 16th, 2014 3:34 AM

My favourite boss definitely has to be BNK3R from Borderlands 2. It's just such an epic fight coupled with the realisation of what you're actually fighting against, and the rewards are crazy. It's one of those battles which, although it isn't overly difficult, gives a real feel of "Yeahhh I'm badass", which is always what you want to feel after killing a boss! Worst boss battle ever goes to the final boss in Infamous: Second Son - what a disappointing end to a trilogy that was. :p

Chocolate™ April 16th, 2014 6:27 AM

Hmm. Maybe the boss battle against Bowser.Jr in Super Mario Galaxy where he controls a giant robot. It was just so bloody difficult for me and the sense of joy you get after destroying that stupid kid's robot is overwhelming.

Sonata April 16th, 2014 6:36 AM

My favorite boss battles are either Sephiroth in Kingdom Hearts I & II, Kefka in FF VI, Ultimecia in FF VIII, or Jecht in FF X. They're just all so BA.

Phazon Elemental April 16th, 2014 8:13 AM

Somebody mentioned The End earlier, who is very interesting because you don't even have to fight him -- just go adjust your clock. Probably the best, though, is Psycho Mantis, who, in my opinion, really set the standard for "playing the player" and similar. The way you're supposed to beat him is absolutely brilliant.

Sydian April 16th, 2014 1:11 PM

Killing Victoria in Bravely Default is literally the most satisfying boss battle ever. Yes, more so than Fassad. At least you don't have to listen to Fassad's stank nasty high pitched voice for the whole game. Makes Victoria all the more hated, therefore more satisfying to finally take down and get her asterisk. ...Which I have yet to use.

Juno April 16th, 2014 3:17 PM

The goddess Minerva from Crisis Core: FFVII. I don't know if I would say favorite, but it was definitely one of the most satisfying battles I'd had.
