In-Game Team Building Style

What kind of team building strategies do you employ in-game? For example, do you use same type of Pokemon or mix it up? Do you ever use gift Pokemon? (aside from starters)

I try to follow a couple criteria when building in-game teams, mainly, the Pokemon either look cool, or I haven't used them yet in a play through. I don't actually try to employ strategy or anything. And in runs like Nuzlockes (which is mostly what I do these days), you don't exactly have the liberty to pick and choose your team.

I slightly misworded my OP there a bit.

Though of course, in a Nuzlocke you have next to no freedom to choose your Pokemon so this question becomes largely irrelevant.

I tend to choose my team based on a combination of looks, power and sometimes even versatility with their movesets. Back in Ruby I never made a very good team at all, but I did improve over the generations. I also use my starter when I can, just because of their usefulness in-game.

In XY I've used 3 Fire Types, and Two water types.
Blazekin
Delphox
Charizard
Rotom-W
Azumarril

and I loved that team. It wasn't the best, but it got the job done :)

Another team I had was in FRLG
Venusaur
Butterfree
Primeape
Pikachu
I think that was my team. That team had the strategy of poison powder/leech seed all of the things :3

Honestly, I usually just pick Pokemon that I like. I'm not a competitive battler so I'm not the type to excessively analyze their stats and IVs and EVs and natures and such. I don't put a ton of effort into what moves I use, but I do mix try to balance good Physical and Special moves. But as for building the team, I usually just pick Pokemon I like. While I do lose at stats and only pick Pokemon with decent stats, it's mostly looks that win me over.

Normally, i have somewhat of an idea of what team i want to use, and i normally end up having that team with a few exceptions here and there. My main criterion for building teams is to have a good type balance and coverage, so that i can take on whatever trainer wants to battle me. As for gift Pokemon, i almost never use them besides of course the starter, which in some occasions i have boxed as well, like when i played Black2. Sometimes ill catch a Pokemon ive never used before and try it out for fun, and if i end up liking it i might even keep it on my team
