Missingno.
One of the most famously known glitches in gaming, Missingno. is a "Pokemon" encountered primarily on the coast of Cinnabar Islands after talking to the Old Man and allowing him to demonstrate capturing a Weedle. Besides its odd shape and cry, it also brought upon other side affects, multiplying 6th item in your bag and scrambling your hall of fame data. If you want to read more about this intriguing "Pokemon" (i.e. why this occurs, etc.), you can have a look at Bulbapedia: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Missingno.
What is your opinion on Missingno., and the possible side effects it brings? Were you surprised the first time you heard about this glitch Pokemon? |
The first time i heard about it i didnt believe it of course. I mean, there were sooo many rumors out there, and this one just sounded the least plausible of all. But then, one day, a friends performed it in front of me, and i was baffled. Of course, this spawned new rumors, like Missingno being the strongest Pokemon there is and so on. I never managed to perform it myself, but i had many friends who after abusing it started losing their gama data, which pretty much scared me so much i didnt even try performing it again.
I think Missingno was/is an interesting phenomenon, for many reasons besides the ones ive mentioned above |
I did not even know about this glitch until the first time one of my oldest friends in real life told me that it could be used to clone items. After he told me, I decided to do the glitch. I have used it to clone Rare Candies, Nuggets, and the Master Ball. All in all, I thought the Missingno glitch was one of the best glitches in a video game.
|
A friend showed me that one, but he never showed me the multiplying glitch...and then I ended up duplicating my card key. Whoops!
|
My brother told me about this when I was around nine years old. The bag trick was utterly perplexing to me, but I abused it so much lol
I was too scared to catch it, though. I didn't want to mess up my game or be forced to restart. |
I used it to duplicate items constantly. Unlimited Master Balls, Rare Candies and Nuggets for cash. I also caught them because they could learn any move. This was my original HM Slave, I taught it all but Flash.
Of course I then leveled it up and it always evolved into Kangaskhan. Then I had a Kangaskhan with Fly, Surf, Strength, Cut. I later transferred this awesome Pokémon to my Gen 2 games. |
I guess a little bit more interesting then the item duplicate glitch is the other way of the glitch.
I don't know what exactly it was, if you have to catch it, to flew or to kill it, but after that you surf further and you can caught ryhorn and some other Safari Pokemon up to level 125. Or 180. But if you level them up one level, they will fall back to level 100. I liked this point of the glitch the most, and I had never problems with the save games. |
I never really knew about Missingno until 6 months ago tbh ^^
I was rly surprised when I learnt of it and of course, I had no idea what missingno was, or wut it does Did Nintendo/Game Freak intended to make Missingno on purpose or something, or just an accidental glitch Nintendo left behind o_O? |
I had heard of this and I tried it out immediately, luckily for me after getting infinite masterballs and catching everything I could, I beat the elite four, and did all that extra stuff you can do until you get bored in pokemon, I saved my game then the next time I had checked it, it was still in perfect condition, like nothing happened at all, it was just so cool.
|
I Used the Rare candy trick and the masterball trick,
I catched him ones and my whole game wen't crazy lol. |

The only thing intended was the name MISSINGNO. - a few 'pokemon' have that name if the game somehow tries to load a type of pokemon that's out of the intended range due to this glitch and some others. The rest of its effects are what happens when something simple like a Game Boy starts loading all the wrong data in all the wrong places. |
I only first started hearing about Missingno. after watching YouTube videos of people activating the glitch. I was rather intrigued by it and was quite suspicious on whether or not it would hurt the save file of the game. I've never tried it out before and I don't know if I ever will for fear of the chances of corrupting my game, but it does seem fun to have duplicates of Master Balls. I believe Missingno. is a leftover glitch from the games, or it could be the trace of a Pokemon that GF had deleted in the past. Idk.
|
I think Nintendo should put Missingno or a Pokemon similar to it in the next generation. Not as a glitch, but as a legit Pokemon. It would be a cool nostalgia reference to the old games. Maybe it could be a Ghost/Electric Pokemon.
|
I first heard about this Glitch from a cousin of mine
but she told me to stay away from it. I did the glitch anyway and got lots of Nuggets. |
It is also stated in Bulbapedia's Thread that its unknown why this glitch happens I really got scared after reading this :S is it true that its still unknown?
On a Second thought, I also think when Nintendo need more pokemons; they will surely look after MISSINGNO. the Scary Beast! {XD} |

I don't remember how I first heard about the glitch, but I remember trying it as soon as I found out, along with trying to get to Glitch City. I never saved after either for obvious reasons, so I was never able to get duplicates of the item in my 6th slot, but it was fun trying it out anyway. I always thought it'd be cool if they included Missingno as an official Pokemon one day, but I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it to happen. |
I mostly used it for Rare Candies, which was useful for alternative teams.

Anyway I'd really love if they make something like Pokestar Studios in the next generation with a computer-themed quest and Missingno. as the boss :D |
I think the Bulbapedia page was talking about its' Pokedex entry being a very long series of glitchy sounds. It's probably because the game's trying to read random parts of the ROM as text data and never finds the spot that usually tells the game "stop here
Or it's just a poorly written article. |
The Missingno. glitch was always really cool to me, my friends would abuse it so much. I never did though because I'm lame and wanted to play "honestly". Ha.
While we're on the subject on Cinnabar Island if you Surf on that ledge sometimes the old man in front of the Gym will be standing on the Gym's roof. |
That Coast of Cinnibar is Scary! Don't Get close to it! {XD}
Literally, This all happens because Lines of codes get mixed up! Nothing to do with the intention of nintendo. I bet when they'll lack ideas for New Pokemons, they'll either make Mega-evolutions or limelight old' Pokes. |

I always used to get the Ghost Missingno but I remember someone when I was 9 telling me about this, but never told me the Missingno pokemon, instead it was the 6th item glitch. Surprised me in a way, and as a result I got all of my pokemon to level 100 through this.
|
I was 9 when I first witnessed Missingno. (too many years ago ><). My cousin really loved Pokemon too, and he knew all the cheats and tricks at the time. So when he showed me a Missingno. on his party I wasn't that surprised. I was surprised however, when I tried the Missingno. glitch myself. I couldn't believe something so weird existed in my game !
On first encountering it myself, I caught it (stupidly). I'm sure it was level 80 with the type "Bird / Ice". At the time I had Pokemon Stadium, and couldn't wait to see what it looked like on the N64. I was quite disappointed when it just appeared as a Subsitute thing, instead of the glorious rectangular block of lines that represented it in Red. For some reason I imagined that Missingno.'s true form was going to be something amazing when transferred to Stadium. After this disppointment, I only really used Missingno. to acquire hundreds of Rare Candies and Master Balls so I could train every Pokemon to level 100 (never quite finished that :P). Missingno. is pure nostalgia for me. It reminds me of when I really knew nothing about Pokemon, and the whole thing was very much a mystery to me. |
