Pick one of these three.
In Generation 2, we were introduced to 3 Pokemon who would either breathe fire, shoot water or throw sharp leaves!
So which one of these were your favorites? :) Cyndaquil http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/b/bd/Spr_2c_155.gif http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/9/91/Spr_2c_156.gif http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/9/96/Spr_2c_157.gif Totodile http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/f/f1/Spr_2c_158.gif http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/3/37/Spr_2c_159.gif http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/6/62/Spr_2c_160.gif Or Chikorita? http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/3/3c/Spr_2c_152.gif http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/d/d5/Spr_2c_153.gif http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/7/7d/Spr_2c_154.gif |
Hard to say. The first 3 times I played this I went with Chikorita, simply because I liked the plant type. Then I switched over to Cyndaquil because I liked the final evolution form (Typhlosion) more than Meganium. I never went with Totodile because I don't like the evolution forms of him. Cyndaquil is probably my most-picked starter.
Complicated: Favorite starter is Chikorita, favorite 1st evolution type is tied between Quilava and Bayleef and favorite 2nd evolution type is Typhlosion. :P |
When it came to the starters in Gold, Silver, and Crystal, may favorite was Totodile. I liked it ever since I first played Silver. Plus I had to continue my tradition of picking the water type starter.
I'd have to say the Meganium line; to me, it looks just simply adorable. Meganium also makes a great tank; you just need to use it right. Second favorite would be Typhlosion family. :] Which did I choose? I picked all three (had several different runs, so…), but the first would be Cyndaquil.
I'd have picked Totodile but probably because it's the first Pokemon I ever had in a video game. Cyndaquil is a fine choice as well. If you enjoy challenges, pick Chikorita.
I'd had Yellow before I played Gold, though I'd literally played about 20 minutes worth of Yellow and had barely gotten to Viridian City before I played Gold and got totally drawn into it. Cyndaquil was my first Pokémon, and given the choice it'll always be my favourite. Cyndaquil line all the way!
The first time i played Gen2 i picked Cyndaquil, because i loved Charmander in the previous games. By now though, my favorite is Totodile. I really like his design and loved him in the Anime
Totodile; it was just so cute in a twisted way to me and then I saw Ash's dancing one. I knew when I got Gold it was gonna be my starter and used it again in Crystal; but I ended up using Cyndaquil on my final file because there is an extreme lack of decent fire pokemon in those games (and the remakes).
Totodile was my favourite as well. When I first saw the three starters in Pokemon Silver, I picked Totodile because of its design and color scheme. And because my save file would disappear randomly, I picked Totodile most of the time I had to restart. Sometimes I picked Chikorita or Cyndaquil for a change, but they never grew on to me as much as Totodile did.
Totodile I like Him the most of the 3.
I really love all three of the Johto starters, but I'm going to have to go with Cyndaquil for nostalgia's sake :3
I love Cyndaquil the most design wise and he's prettystrong. Feraligatr learns better moves early on and can pack quite a punch, Meganium is the most difficult to use imo, since he's weak to most gym leaders and his movepool isn't that great neither.
My favorite overall, would be Cyndaquil and it's line :) |
When I first played these games, I chose Chikorita. Though he is difficult to use, I still choose him a lot because he fits into my planned teams well. Given the choice now, I would probably go with Totodile even if there are better water types out there. He has a good movepool and can pack quite a punch. I like Cyndaquil well enough though.
To preface this, I just want to say maybe this should be a poll. Just a thought.
I adore the Chickorita line, but I have a never used it in literally any of my Nuzlockes. Early game is just so difficult with it. |
Totodile was my first pick, it is one of the best pokemon you can have.
I loved my gold edition when I first bought it and I played all the time and beet red again and again just to reach level 100 with my beloved Pokemon :) I guess this was my first Pokemon which I trained to level 100 :) and I guess that shows how much I like it. :) |
Cyndaquil, but I've always liked Fire types. After Charizard in Gen 1, I stuck with Fire types throughout each gen. Although, I liked all three in the Gen, it seemed Totodile and Cyndaquil we're the only two with use at the start of the games.
Unfortunately, the Johto starters are some of my least favorite to use, but I found myself picking Cyndaquil most often out of the three. It's a lot easier to get a hold of other Grass and Water type Pokemon early in the game (Hoppip, Bellsprout and Wooper are all available near Violet City), whereas I believe the first Fire type Pokemon you can get is evolving the Eevee from Goldenrod into a Flareon.
Johto starters aren't one of my most favourite class of starters I would choose from :L
Normally, I'd choose the water starters for every game, but in exception, as in when I chose cyndaquil (mostly because for the appearance of Typhosion xD), and...rejected Totodile :/. Wasnt a fan of dat ^^ |

Tough choice really, but the first one I had ever picked was Cyndaquil! He was just absolutely adorable and I thought he was just so cool, then eventually I also started to like Totodile because he was also just adorbs~ and both of their last evolutions were just boss for me. I really liked them both out of all three.
I love Totodile, but none of its evolutions. Of the final stages, I actually love Typhlosion. If I had known what they all evolve into, I would have chosen Cyndaquil on my initial run.
I always thought the Cyndaquil line was the coolest out of the other two lines. I really like the final evolution. All in all its a really dependable line to use at least in my point of view.

The Totodile line. I liked Cyndaquil first, but I switched to Totodile and I don't know why.
You can see Feraligatr's butt in Gen 3 when you're using it. |
I think they're all great, but one of my favorite Pokemon is Quilava...so let that answer your question. :P
None of the above. I absolutely despise Gen 2's starters. I have never liked them, and their dull types (meaning they're not dual-typed). Every time I play, I switch them out for another Pokemon. In my most recent playthrough of Crystal, I got rid of Totodile for a Gyarados (no, not the red Gyarados) that I got quite early in the game as a Magikarp. They are weak and are definitely, in my opinion, the worst starters. If I recall correctly, I saw some older versions of them, Honōguma (fire), Kurusu (water), and Happa (grass). Honōguma looked extremely badass and super cool, I like it much better than Cyndaquil. Kurusu looked pretty cool as well, but I'm still eh on that one. Happa is basically Chikorita, but with a smaller leaf.
Here they are if anyone wants to see them: Spoiler:
But if I absolutely had to choose between them, I would go with Chikorita. It looks the cutest one of them all <3 |
I absolutely love the Totodile line...just the fact that you could get decked out with both Surf, Ice Punch and Bite relatively early in the game means you're pretty much set for life.
For me its Totodile, just because he's so cute... :3
Chikorita because of Ash's one in the animen was so cute.
Well, Totodile was my first Pokémon ever and I've never chosen another one in G/S/C, because of it's similarity to crocodiles/alligators which belong to my favorite animals.
Totodile is my favorite Water Pokémon, so naturally I'd choose its line.
When I played the games way back when, I usually chose Cyndaquil, though I chose Chikorita a couple of times and Totodile a couple of times. Then, on the playthrough where I finally completed my Pokédex, I chose Totodile, and he (rather, Feraligatr) was a mainstay in my party until the internal battery died. (R.I.P. ;-;) |
I usually roll with Water types, so Totodile for me. However, I'm a big fan of Tybrosion (not a typo)
Hard to say; I just love them all! My favourite out of the three would have to be Chikorita though, with Typhlosion coming second. It's design is just adorable but I personally prefer having a fire-type starter, which is why Typhlosion comes close. <3
I have always loved Totodile. Long time ago when I wasn't into Pokémon, my friend had SoulSilver and his starter was also Totodile. When I started playing Silver myself on an emulator, which was my first own Pokémon game, I picked Totodile without doubt. That one has become my first level 100 too.
Yeah, Croconaw sucks. But who cares if it's other forms are awesome? |
I've always been very partial to the grass starters no matter how much flack they seem to get. I always loved Bulbasaur, it was my first choice and still is to this day whenever I revisit Kanto so naturally I went with Chikorita as well. Although it struggles a lot with the start of the game it also learns Razor Leaf like right away, that might not seem worth it to most of you but I like that fact.
On another note I like the evolution levels of the Johto starters. I feel like they were distributed pretty evenly or uniquely. |
Cyndaquil All the way! She Is my favourite of all non-legendary Pokemon (possibly even compared to the legendaries)
Totodile :D Because he is like an alligathoar :D
The Totodile line. WATER ELF LITTLE CROCODILE WILL DO!
...but honestly, I think Croconaw with its caveman colour/pattern scheme looks really cool and innovative, and Feraligatr's menacing and ready to fight. Totodile's a cutie, too. |
I picked Totodile my first time playing, and loved it. So I'd go with him.
But I love the other two as well. This generation's starters and first generation starters are my favorites! |
Whoooo Cyndaquil!! <3 :3
I like all of the Gen.2 starters, but most of the time I picked Cyndaquil. And if I couldn't make up my mind which one I should choose, I just performed the famous "cloning glitch" and picked all three starters :3 |
Cyndaquil will always be my first pick for and Johto based adventure, hands down. He got me through some tough challenges during our travels together. Single handedly took down 90% of the gyms on his own back in the day.
However, Chikorita is a good backup if i'm feeling like a challenge. Totodile always felt sort of meh to me for some reason, though I admit he's a good starter choice. |
I chose Totodile during my first few times playing Gold because my young mind already disliked the 5% inaccuracy of Tackle which came with Cyndaquil and Chikorita and decided that Totodile's 100% accurate Scratch was the best starter move. I did try out Cyndaquil and Chikorita during previous playthroughs, but Totodile stayed with me through till the Elite 4 as a Feraligatr.
Today, I prefer Cyndaquil's line the best out of the three. I still don't mind Totodile, but a physical water-type doesn't really suit my style anymore. As for Chikorita, I stopped using grass-types so it's out of the question. Typhlosion is an amazing starter and has never failed me once. |
Totodile, Because of design and powerful Moves he even learns Ground-type moves such as Earthquake. ^_^
I liked Cyndaquil the most, but Totodile made the game play so much easier, so I usually go with him.
Meganium might be my least favorite starter. |
Chikorita was the cutest of the three and I loved it in the anime. But gameplay wise if I was playing Gold I went with Totodile and if I played Silver I chose Cyndaquil. Totodile is my all time favorite water type and starter.
I like the Johto starters, but their final forms have always been my least favorite set. When I was younger I would always pick cyndaquil, but now I always want to lean towards Chikorita. But Chikorita kinda sucks hard in the end so I end up going with totodile.
I usually pick all three thanks to the cloning glitch, but when I don't feel like doing that, I pick Cyndaquil. He has great speed and nice firepower (pardon the pun). I've used him in countless playthroughs and he has never let me down. To this day, Cyndaquil remains my favorite starter.
I tend to go back and forth between Cyndaquil and Totodile, but in this era, as well as design and on its own i'd go with Cyndaquil. Between those two I like the Fire-type's design more, and it was more fun to use, especially against some of the Gyms in Johto that were weak to it. It also got ThunderPunch and was relatively fast.
I know it gets no love, but I always loved using Meganium. It may be the underdog of Johto but sometimes it's fun to have a little more challenge to your game.
Coming from the original three this was a tough one but I always went with a cyndaquil hoothoot combo till around the 4th or 5th gym, they grew pretty quickly
Cyndaquil. Though, I've never played Totodile. I always thought Cyandaquil was a little 'prettier' than the other two.
I tried to start my journey on Gold with Chikorita, but I just couldn't do it. It's not that I don't like her (I actually LOVE Meganium) but I just couldn't get it going, it didn't feel right. I started with Cyndaquil on Silver and Crystal, and when I get HG/SS I will probably do the same. Totodile, while nice, gets no love from me.
Totodile! Without a doubt. I also really like Cyndaquil, but Totodile has the edge. Can't say I really like the Meganium line. But hey, personal preferences.
Cyndaquil! Always. I love the others but Cynda is first pick because Quilava is the bomb :)
Cyndaquil, I love them so much. They always seem to do the best with the fire starters sin terms of design.
http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/3/3c/Spr_2c_152.gif
This adorable girl right here. I loved its design the moment I saw it and was willing to endure a lot of hard battles if it meant keeping her on my team. The other two are fantastic as well.. heck, Johto had the best starters so it's often hard to pick! Haha. |
I picked Cyndaquil on my Crystal, but I picked Totadile on my Gold rom playthrough. Never much cared for Meganium, although I think it's cool.
Cyndaquil with no question.
Cyndaquil was my favorite back in the day and the starter I would always pick when I was younger, but I've grown to like Totodile more. Feraligatr is easily a bamf.
cyndaquil always. fire pokemon are always my favorite
Hmmm... well Meganium is my most hated Starter ever (I even like Torterra and Emboar more) so that one is definitely out. Well the first time I played through Silver with the Cyndaquil line with Thunderpunch and Flamethrower he just seemed unstoppable, and he was definitely stronger in-game than Totodile, but Feraligatr is my 2nd favourite starter design (after Infernape) so I would say I prefer him most.
Cyndaquil/Quilava/Typhlosion.
They are beasts! |
I have always picked Chikorita. That one's my favorite. It's the hardest to start with though. But I think it's a beautiful Pokemon. Especially when it gets to its final form.
I can't choose D:
For the longest time, I always chose Chikorita, ever since I first played Crystal, when I was 4 or so... I liked Chikorita - I thought it was cute. I can still recall faint memories of my battles with it in Crystal. Then came HGSS. First I got SS, and started out with a Chikorita. It was a little difficult to beat Falkner, but fun nonetheless. Eventually I beat the game and completed half of the Pokedex. Then one day, mysteriously..... My save file was erased!!! So I started a new game with Cyndaquil and it's been the same ever since. IDK, I like battling with Cyndaquil's line~ |
Generations 1-3 are the only generations in which I truly like all of the starters. I'm more of a fire type, but in this generation my favorite starter was Totodile. Ferligtr is in my top 5 list of favorite Pokémon from generation 2 and I love the aesthetics of Totodile.
Well, I guess I'm more fire-type oriented, idk xD But I went always for Cyndaquil
Quilava fascinated me when I first got my hands on Pokemon Silver, so I went with Cyndaquil without any deliberation involved beforehand. Typhlosion did not disappoint, and remains my favorite line of the three Johto starters. I like the other two equally, although I've never gotten through an entire game with Chikorita as my starter, or at least not yet. :]
I could not choose a anyone other than Totodile because of those great jaws.
I like all three of them honestly but if I had to choose one, it'd had to be Cyndaquil. The first time I ever played G/S I think I chose Chikorita because I felt it needed some "attention".
I love all three to death, but if I have to pick one it'd be Totodile. It holds a lot of sentimental value for me because Feraligatr was my starter the first time I beat the Pokemon League in GSC, and it's adorable as heck while its evos. are badass~
I liked all of them! But my first Pokemon ever was Chikorita, so I have a soft spot for that one. It started off my tradition of only picking Grass-types. In a sense, it seems to be the more underappreciated one because people typically prefer Cyndaquil and Totodile. Honestly, the reason I chose it was because I wanted an Arcanine and didn't want to have two Fire-types on my team. Otherwise, I would've gone for Cyndaquil. As for Totodile, I'm not really a big fan of Water-types, so I rarely choose that starter.
Of course, I was playing Silver version and had nobody to trade with... so no Arcanine. ;~; Still, I kept going on with the tradition. It all started with this pretty flower dinosaur. It seems like it'd be the one I'd have other than Cyndaquil as well, due to being very passive and smelling nice. Also, I love flowers. :3 But Quilava is still one of my favorite middle evolutions regardless. I've used all three because I've played these games from front to back more times than sane people have, so I know these starters pretty well. Typhlosion was always cool to use and I like how they have an unusual blue in their design as opposed to typical Fire-type colors. Very unique. As well, their shinies are pretty. :3 |
Definitely the cute echidna. <3
But I've actually played through and beaten the game with every single starter, and probably another time or two over with the same one. My favorite is still Cyndaquil though. It was the one I chose originally and I still adore it to this day. nvn Traditionally I don't evolve my starters either, so he remains the adorable closed-eye fire spitter in my care. Which is exactly how I like him! |
Cyndaquil is the best starter
Cyndaquil. Just because he was a fire type and Typhlosion could learn ThunderPunch which allowed me to finish this game with only Typhlosion.
Never enjoyed Meganium. Not too many usable attacks and too slow for me. Totodile was my 1st pick ever so he has that special place in my heart. |
Cyndaquil, because he was my first shiny, and is a beast overall, Totadile is a great Rival, and Meganium is cool, but I dont like design of it (just my opinion). But I have used all of them, and personally Cyndaquil is better. :p
Totodile.
It was my very first starter, ever. Despite giving it crappy moves like cut, it was a BEAST when it eventually evolved into Feraligatr. It demolished the Elite Four with cut haha. So yeah, for nostalgic reasons, definitely Totodile. <3 |
Totodile for me. I didn't originally like its evolved forms (thought they seemed scary), but they grew on me with time. I loved my whole Gold version team, and became very attached to all of the Pokémon I used (Totodile, Blastoise, Noctowl, Pikachu, and Quagsire, with an extra slot for whatever I was training--yeah, really balanced, I know).
I also like Cyndaquil and its evolutions a lot, and generally use it when I play Silver. I've never cared much for Chikorita, though. |
Chikorita!
My favourite Pokemon in the anime were that line, they had the cutest cry and they were just the cutest pokemon of all in my opinion. |
Torn between Cyndaquil and Totodile. :( I used them both a lot, and they proved to be excellent in-game. I can't just choose between one of them. But on my very first Silver playthrough, I picked Cyndaquil. In Gold, I got Totodile.
Oh gosh, that's tough. Chikorita's the cutest, and I usually choose it in Colosseum, but it's not all that useful. If we're talking Gen II, I'd probably go with Typhlosion due to it's access to Fire and ThunderPunch.

Excuse me, but this board is about the generation 1 games, not generation 2. This topic does not belong here and it should be moved. |
As a kid I always went for totodile but now I will always go for cyndaquil.
I originally started with Totodile..no idea why, but I normally always go with the Water-Type first time through and always end up playing with the Grass-Type second time around. Definitely Chikorita though.
Totodile line is my favorite starter in Gen 2. Feraligatr is my favorite water type.
In Silver I chose Chikorita which is my favourite starter out of the three.
In Gold I pickd Cyndaquil. In Crystal I picked Totodile. |
Mine is cyndaquil! I Also like totodile.
The first game i had was HG/SS so i dont really know what it really feels like. Lol |
Totodile.
I'm surprised at how many people have chosen lil Totes in this thread; I always under the impression that Cyndaquil (ugh) was the most popular of the Gen 2 starters by far. |
First crystal playthrough, I went totodile!
Simply... Cyndaquil was my starter because, it was my cup of tea, but knowing bulbasaur from GEN 1 as a Damage and Status stacker, Chikorita would be the same... Now for Totadile, even though he has the early rush aspect with his moveset, also surf. I wanted to play the game, without Stacking or Rushing, As Totadile would be crushing the XP curve way too fast with his moveset, Cyndaquil makes up for it's slow moveset with learning a accuracy crushing move (Good early game) and ember being pretty useful... I Knew i just had to pick cyndaquil, Also I like its design :P (Too much RTS XD)
Well, when i first played that gen i would pick cydaquil for the evolution, but then i would go to totodile for strengh and the games are a breeze whit feralagator, but right now i am doing a solo with cydaquil no evolving so i would say cydaqiul
Totodile and Cyndaquil are my favorite.
Definitely Cyndaquil, and its evolutions,
http://cdn.bulbagarden.net/upload/b/bd/Spr_2c_155.gif |
Back in the day (3 years ago) I didn't really know what Pokemon was. I was 7-8 years old. When I picked a starter, I picked Totodile. I don't remember anything else. If I never played Pokemon HeartGold 3 years ago and picked Totodile, I would choose Cyndaquil. But history has brought my heart to Totodile. I always pick Totodile when I play Johto games.
Gotta go with Chikorita. Loved its evolutions. The other two, not so much (which is weird considering Gen 2 is my favorite).
I love Totodile, but really dislike Croconaw and Feraligatr. I like Cyndaquil, and really like Quilava, but for some reason I just find Typhlosion boring. |
When I first played Crystal, I chose Totodile, but my favourite would have to be the Cyndaquil line. Typhlosion in particular. It isn't used as much as the other starters, but I personally love Typhlosion! :D
Cyndaquil. The only generation where I my favorite starter isn't Fire type in Gen 6.
The water type starter has been my favorite in every gen except 2nd. I like Feraligatr but Typhlosion was my favorite by far.
cyndaquil>totodile, i never played with chikorita
When the first time i played Pokemon Crystal, i chose Chikorita cause he's kinda cute to me. After i raise it to its first evolution (i forgot the name). I replay back the game and chose Totodile, he been my most strongest pokemon throughout the game. haha~
The Totodile evo line is my favorite starter of all, and also my fav pokemon of all as well.
Well, just Totodile and Feraligator. Croconaw is just a waste of space. |
