Mind = Blown

What are some things you were surprised to learn about in the Pokemon games?

Hiatus March 22nd, 2014 5:29 PM

I didn't know about EVs until about generation four. Once I had learned that you were able to train your Pokémon for them and double their strength and whatnot, I was pretty fascinated. :] Another thing would be trade-evolution; I wasn't aware of them until about gen three.

Blueredemption March 22nd, 2014 5:38 PM

Just yesterday i was told in the trade corner irc that bugsy (2nd gym leader in johto) happens to be a boy. I never even suspected it for a second that *she* was a he.

I literally typed in "mind blown"

The Odd Egg in Gen II has a 50% chance to be shiny in Japanese versions, 14% otherwise. I definitely should've checked those random Cleffas and Igglybuffs, because their shiny versions are quite similar to the regular ones, so I never noticed.

I agree about the EV training thing, except it was th beginning off gen 5 for me.
Also, never realized unown weren't breedable until recently:/

PumpJack March 22nd, 2014 5:42 PM

When I first started playing, I didn't know about evolution.

So when Bulbasaur became Ivysaur, I pretty much lost my mind with amazement.

Whereas my mind was blown when I found out people thought he was a girl. :D

More a realisation than learning something (though in this case it's the same thing) - when I discovered that Dragon Rage was the only Dragon type attack in the original Pokémon games (RBY). Like, really? Just the one attack?

I've literally never made that misconception. "Bugsy" is quite a masculine name to be perfectly honest. :x

It wasn't until about halfway through GenIII that I realized the difference between Attack and Special Attack. Until then, I made all kinds of assumptions about what those terms meant. XD

Blastin'Tyruntz March 23rd, 2014 3:56 AM

Garchomp has wings. And he can't use the HM Fly, but flies faster than a jet.
Good logic gamefreak.

classiccartoonsftw March 23rd, 2014 4:08 AM

My mind was blown when I learned that Kadabra, Machoke, Graveler, and Haunter evolved by trading, and that some Pokemon evolved by trading while holding an item.

It was also blown when Grimsley's Krookodile outsped my Lucario in Pokemon White 2.

mangamusicfan March 23rd, 2014 4:54 AM

About Ev training and stuff, Great stuff but blows my mind lol

Gulpin March 23rd, 2014 7:30 PM

For me it's the special and physical move split pre-Generation Four. When I played through games like RSE as a kiddo I really didn't pay attention to which types were which and which Pokemon had appropriate attacking stats to go with their STAB. However, now it is fun to switch around between the games and trying to quickly adjust to their slight mechanical changes

Onicon March 24th, 2014 1:22 AM

The Nursery Aide in the BW2 Ferris Wheel is a crossdressing male. Does it make it less or more erotic when he starts to take his shirt of?

Also, it is quite amusing when we realized that this is censored in the English version. We usually only play in Japanese and German (he is definitely male in both versions).

Rabby March 24th, 2014 1:29 AM

When I first started playing, here's the evo chain I always thought to be:

Shellder-----> Gastly ----> Haunter---> Cloyster----> Gengar

I was shocked when I realized I was wrong xD, since I first thought they all looked alike

I also thought that Mew evolved into Mewtwo, and that Dialga evolved into Arceus

I never knew about Arceus until BW came out anyways v.v

XpokeX March 24th, 2014 1:48 AM

I have never known about STAB until I'd say 2 years ago maybe? I always put different types of moves on my pokes but now i realise how helpfull a same type attack is :)

EVs were the first thing I learned about Pokemon (that they never explain in the game). I believe it was when Silver edition came out (and even then, a friend had to explain).

My Sandslash in Pokemon Yellow was able to take special attacks like a beast. It must have had a +SDef nature, and I do remember leaving it in against Water and Ice attack users quite often.

After taking a quick look at an EV list... I believe it's due to fighting a lot of Tentacool and Tentacruel.

Fernbutter March 24th, 2014 2:59 AM

It was EVs, I learned about that somewhere around Gen IV, right after I started playing pokemon. It was just such a confusing concept and I thought it was just the most coolest mechanic in the game ever I just screamed.

Sabrewulf238 March 25th, 2014 3:02 AM

That Barboach isn't a Cyclops and the "eye" is actually a mouth. I've thought that ever since 3rd gen and only by examining it's model in X did I realise my error.

Lots of shock followed by a "well that does make more sense....".

EVs and natures didn't exist in the first two generations. o_0;

The precursor to the modern EV system was Stat exp...and yeah, fighting a lot of Tentacool and Tentacruel would max out your Special stat fairly quickly. XD

Hikamaru March 26th, 2014 5:03 AM

I was actually quite mind-blown myself when I discovered using a move of the same type as the Pokemon did slightly more damage a.k.a. the STAB bonus.

Zorogami March 26th, 2014 6:06 AM

As a kid i was baffled at the fact that Farfecthd did not evolve into Doduo... xD
When i replayed some Gen3 games, after the Physical/special split was implemented, i was really surprised to find out Ghost is a physical move...indeed, that is something that still bugs me

tfender7 March 26th, 2014 9:11 AM

Just found out a couple of hours ago that you can only mega evolve during a battle once with one Pokemon only.

Synerjee March 26th, 2014 9:24 AM

You see the two appendages coming out of Wynaut's head? I've always thought they were ears. After I found out they were actually arms, I was like "....Whaaaat?!" Seriously though, they look so much like ears. o___o
