How can you type like that?

So, how do you type? Are you a two finger typer who types with just their two fingers? Or do you type the usual way with all fingers on the keyboard? Are you a fast typer or a slow typer?

I type with just two of my fingers. It's easier for me to see the keys this way. I do use other fingers to hit keys like the delete key, which I was my ring finger for. It's funny because a lot of people are amazed by how fast I can type with just two fingers. I've had a few people tell me I type really fast this way. XD

Khilia April 7th, 2014 9:50 AM

I type relatively slow and always look at the keyboard when I type stuff, mostly because of either habit or because I want to avoid typos as good as possible...
At least it works :p

Satoshi Ookami April 7th, 2014 9:50 AM

I actually don't have any idea =D
It's somewhere between 6 and the whole 10.
Since I pretty much move with the whole hand on my keyboard I don't really realize how many fingers I use.

Raine April 7th, 2014 9:58 AM

I remember being taught the "proper" of typing in elementary school and I've been using it ever since. Those typing speed tests are actually fun to do once in a while; just completed one right now and I got 100-110 words per minute. Not entirely sure if that's faster than the average person, but my friends have commented on how fast I can type. Generally I keep my left thumb on the space bar, while the rest of fingers will be positioned at a, s, and my index being somewhere between d and f. Right hand fingers will be at j, k, l, and ;. Both my pinkies will be positioned near the shift button.

Dreg April 7th, 2014 10:05 AM

I'm generally a slow typer, but I don't use all my fingers. I use both my thumbs, but I don't use my pinkies for typing.

Bruce Bei Fong April 7th, 2014 10:17 AM

I only use two fingers and my thumb for hitting the space-bar. However, I am extremely fast at typing. I can touch-type and out-race some of my friends who type fast and use all their fingers.

I started writing stories on my dad's MS Word as a young child, you see. Really helped with learning to spell and it helped me increase my typing speed a considerable amount.

Sydian April 7th, 2014 10:23 AM

I type the standard way that we're taught (here at least) to type. Home keys and all that good stuff. Apparently I type at lightning speed, because when I am on Skype with friends or something, if I start typing they're just like TF WAS THAT??? SYD ARE YOU TYPING??? Apparently I type really loudly too idk I think that's just my keyboard to tell you the truth.

The average adult should be able to type about 35-45 words per minute. So ye, you're pretty fast.

I type the way that we were taught (drilled) to type in Elementary School. My Computer Apps teacher would smack us on the forehead with a meter stick if we looked down at the keyboard as we were taking the typing tests. I'm actually glad for that though because now I can multitask and not worry about if I'm actually typing what it is I'm thinking to type or if it's just a bunch of jumbled up words. I do often hit the semicolon key instead of the apostrophe one though which is upsetting.

Hm, interesting information. Though I would have imagined it'd be higher considering how much time people spend on the computer these days \:

Sylphiel April 7th, 2014 10:45 AM

I usually don't put too much thought into how I type...although it does seem to be about two fingers per hand, with other fingers hitting the outer keys as needed.

I forget how fast I can type - it's been a while since I've measured it - but I can type at a relatively decent pace. Fast enough for me to trip over keys at times, at least. :P

A lot of them don't know how to spell properly so during actual tests it's like typing out actual words in something completely foreign to them. I don't want to start a rant but they even mess up simple words on paper. I was reading this one guy's essay for English 11 last year and he had at least 50 spelling errors on words that you should have learned before 5th grade.

Ah, that's true. I was going to edit my post with possible reasons why that average was lower than what I had expected, but you beat me to it XD After my initial reply to this thread, I started going on a rampage of typing tests to see if I could improve any. Do you guys speak while you're typing? I tried that method while doing the test, and I think it may have hindered the results a couple times...

New Eden April 7th, 2014 10:51 AM

I never pay attention to this stuff. I only use my pinkies stuff for using shift and my thumb seldom for space. Even with this, I seem to have a WPM of 70+

Dustmop April 7th, 2014 10:56 AM

I'm somewhere in the middle. I'm dyslexic, words are hard, etc. So I only use a few fingers while I watch the screen carefully to ensure I'm writing out real words. Well, a few nails, I should say. I actually slow down considerably when I break a nail because I'm not used to my skin touching the keys, it's a weird feeling the first few days.

My middle fingers do the bulk of the work. My index fingers mostly just grab the letters on the bottom row and the space bar. I've always had crap control over my other fingers (effort), and my thumb nails are usually too long to be useful, they just get in the way.

Synerjee April 7th, 2014 11:08 AM

I've been taught the asdfjkl; typing patterns similar to that of Vanille Sky since I was young. I type with all my fingers. At resting position, my left fingers rest on the a, s, d and f keys, my left fingers on the the j, k, l and ; keys and my left thumb always resting on the spacebar. I hit non-letter keys with either my ring finger or my pinkie. This way, I can type pretty fast, but not as fast as some others that I've seen. My accuracy isn't very spot on though; I do tend to slip up and hit wrong keys sometimes.

Sonata April 7th, 2014 11:15 AM

The size of your keyboard also will play a role in how fast you can type. With the laptop I'm currently using which is like crazy old (around 10 years), the keyboard is extremely compact so my typing speed is decreased (about 52 wpm). However with my personal, broken laptop the keyboard is much more spread out and I feel more comfortable and can type much faster(90-105 wpm). And then the school loaned laptop is about in the middle(70-80 Wpm).

Astinus April 7th, 2014 11:26 AM

Although I learned the standard way of typing, I really don't keep my fingers on the home keys. When I'm preparing to type, my fingers just hover over the keyboard and then just kind of go where they need to. Since I do pretty much all my typing on one computer, I just have a feel for where the keys are on the keyboard.

I pretty much use all of my fingers on both hands. And as I said, I get a lot of practice, so I'm a rather fast typist. Sometimes I make mistakes, but it's not often.

Heather April 7th, 2014 11:26 AM

When I type I use all my fingers except for my ring fingers. I'm a pretty fast typer but at the same time my friends tell me I'm a loud typer. I just think I put a lot of emphasis into what I am trying to type. :D

Sheep April 7th, 2014 11:53 AM

I type with two fingers. >_>; Such a hard habit to break but even so I'm a fairly fast typer, mom always comments on that when she's around and hears me typing away. I learned to type with all my fingers in school but it just never stuck since it was so uncomfortable. ;(

starseed galaxy auticorn April 7th, 2014 11:57 AM

I've never really measured how fast I type because I can never do the sentences they ask you to. D: I've tried once, and it's just... not going to happen for me. >< So, I have no idea how fast I can actually type. I just know I type fast at times.

Corvus of the Black Night April 7th, 2014 11:58 AM

I used to go with hunt and peck, now I freestyle all over the place. I would make Mavis Beacon literally ♥♥♥♥ her pants with how awesome I type. My WPM is pretty high, too.

Pendraflare April 7th, 2014 12:01 PM

I'm usually regarded as a fast typer. I type with both hands most of the time. I had a keyboarding class a long time ago that was a serious drag on occasion. =(

Darkwing Ducklett April 7th, 2014 12:08 PM

I type with both my hands and all my fingers...unless I stop to think about it, then I start typing with my index fingers only; a habit I've been trying (and failing) to break. I can touch-type, and I think my typing speed is something along the lines of 80 wpm...although it's been a while since I last checked. I did some transcription work last year, and I think I might actually have started typing a bit faster as a result...

Colress Machine April 7th, 2014 1:10 PM

I type with all my fingers fairly fast though I tend to trip a lot and have to fix spelling errors as I type. Though by now, I can click the delete button at the speed of light so I don't even realize when I correct errors anymore. : P

Aurora April 7th, 2014 1:13 PM

My fashion of typing is like some weird hybrid of two-finger typing and touch typing (I do both at the same time) and I never look at the keyboard unless, of course, I make a mistake, in which case I'll have to look down to recalibrate myself. Speed depends on what keyboard I'm using - I'm blazing fast (clocking >100wpm) on an onboard laptop keyboard and considerably slower on a USB one. I'm stuck using the latter at the moment as I poured tea on my laptop, breaking a few things in the process (keyboard inclusive).

Firox April 7th, 2014 1:50 PM

I use my entire hand, just like I was taught at school. When I'm about to type anything, my hands just instinctively go on the entire keyboard.

Typing I'm sort of in between fast and slow, around 35 to 45 (the faster the more mistakes I make) words a minute. I do tend to make lots of spelling mistakes (not just punctuation, but certain words too), so in PC I tend to use the edit button a lot.

edit: I just remember, the only time I use two fingers is when I need to use an ALT-character and don't want to bother switching between languages, especially between English and Spanish.

Khoshi April 7th, 2014 4:11 PM

I type with 2 fingers, with my thumb on the space bar. I've averaged around 55-60 WPM with my 2 indexes :p I make a moderate amount of errors though, so I have to backspace often. I also don't have to look at the keyboard.

edit: I have an 80 WPM

Talon April 7th, 2014 4:15 PM

I type with my hands on home row, and don't ever have to look down. I type too quickly. My keyboarding teacher let me teach the class once. It didn't end well. I type so fast sometimes my keyboard doesn't recognize that I even hit a key. Either that or I type faster than my brain can process.

Hiatus April 7th, 2014 4:29 PM

I'm very familiar with my keyboard's layout, so in most cases, I don't have to look at all when typing. :] I type with both my hands and all my fingers, and try to finish whatever I'm writing as fast as I possibly can. I do make typos here and there, but I fix them when they catch my eye.

Cordelia April 7th, 2014 4:32 PM

I type with the majority of my fingers but I actually think I shift my fingers and don't use my pinkies at all. I am watching myself type right now and I've only used my pinky to hit the shift key. My left thumb hovers over the space bar and my right thumb does nothing. So I guess I type with nine fingers? My right pinky hits enter and in the rare case right shift. :D

Fernbutter April 7th, 2014 5:11 PM

If anything I type pretty fast and I don't look at my keyboard unless really necessary, but it takes awhile to learn, and to be able to actually perfect it, but I still glance at my keyboard every once in awhile just to be sure, it helps.

Sirfetch’d April 7th, 2014 7:17 PM

I type with all 8 fingers haha. Some people find it a bit unusual but it's just how i've adapted to typing over the years and it's made me into a much faster typer overall!

PinkOmnimon April 7th, 2014 7:58 PM

Depends what I'm doing and who I'm talking to when I type. If I'm stuffing my face or talking to someone I don't care for I'll just use my right hand and tap the keys with whichever finger feels like tapping something.

Cherrim April 7th, 2014 11:31 PM

I mainly use home row. I don't do it correctly, since I don't really use my pinky fingers all that much and if I type for too long without stopping, sometimes I don't go back to homerow properly and I'll start to mess up my letters but... for the most part I'm pretty good. I'm the fastest typist of anyone I know IRL and my speed is usually around 110 wpm when I test it. When old people (ie, parents or their friends) are in the room while I'm typing it usually freaks them out but no one else has really cared or noticed in years.

I'm content with how quickly I type but I wish my accuracy was a little better. I have to go back and correct way more often than I'm comfortable with. :(

Blastin'Tyruntz April 8th, 2014 1:17 AM

LOL i don't even know what proper typing is! I started by typing with only one hand but now i use a hand and a half, which means i use my right hand to type most of the stuff and my left end to pick up the pieces like putting e\s\y at the end of words and using the space key etc. I also type very very fast and know exactly what i want to write so im focused on the mission. I type relatively loud but if i need to keep quiet i use one hand

Zorogami April 8th, 2014 1:23 AM

I would say type medium fast, most of the time with 4 fingers.
Normally i look at the screen, but i do look down from time to time

Aslan April 8th, 2014 2:13 AM

I use one finger from both hands. The other fingers just rest on the keyboard while I type away. Trying to type with all of my fingers feels really weird. I'm a pretty fast typer though, at least that's what a lot of my classmates have commented on. XD

Kikaito plush April 8th, 2014 4:11 AM

I type with one finger with makes me a slow typist

Belldandy April 8th, 2014 5:45 AM

I use both hands and pretty much all of my fingers except my thumbs lol I don't look at the keyboard either while typing; no need.

I get a lot of comments at work about how fast I type in comparison to them lol

Nick April 8th, 2014 12:59 PM

I touch type. If I look at the keyboard while I'm typing, I slow down and start to mess up.

My hands always return to home row, so I think I type properly.

Sableye~ April 8th, 2014 4:40 PM

I look at the keyboard while I'm preparing to type something, then after that, I just watch the screen and fix any typos as I go. I know where each key is, but only when I'm actually typing. I don't need to see the keyboard, and I can feel when I've mistyped something, even if I'm not watching the screen/keyboard. I never learned how to type "properly"...this is just from having far too much practice. I:

I remember being timed once to find out how quickly I type, but it was a while back, and I can't remember what it was. Apparently it was pretty impressive, though.

Edit:
I just now seen Mac's post and realized that I type similarly to the way he described. I don't use my thumbs at all, though.

mikey April 8th, 2014 4:51 PM

I type really fast. I don't even look at the keyboard when I type. I use both hands when I type, using two or three fingers on both hands to reach certain keys.

AuroraBeam April 8th, 2014 5:10 PM

I type with all of my fingers except my pinky I believe. I guess I use it sometimes but I don't think often, and I type pretty fast and don't have to look at the keyboard unless I'm typing numbers. I used to have to look at the keyboard but I've been typing so much for so long that I don't need to look any more lol. I've tried just using two fingers and it is just way too slow. I get frustrated with how slow it is, haha.

manadhon April 8th, 2014 5:50 PM

I have an odd manner of typing, mostly a result of forgetting the so-called "proper" form, and getting into programming. I always look at the keyboard, but would still be regarded as a fast typer (although typos are commonplace). Rather than take the time to use the shift key for capitalization, I use caps lock. Call me crazy, but it saves me a lot of time.

As for my phone, I primarily use only my right thumb. Typing with two fingers, even on my large smartphone, is out of the question.

Constant programming caused you to forget the "proper" typing form? I would assume it would be the opposite because I'm just getting into programming languages myself, and I'm still typing the same way as I did before: not bothering to look at the keyboard. Could be a result of me being a beginner, but I like keeping a constant lookout on potential mistakes in the coding that could screw the entire program up.

Not at all. I simply forgot because I was lazy, and truth be told, I was never very good at typing without looking at the keyboard in the first place. My constant use of caps lock is a result of programming.

Poki April 10th, 2014 11:54 AM

I type in all sorts of ways, honestly. No particular typing style.

greenking13 April 15th, 2014 7:49 PM

I am something like you rainbow, I usually type with only two fingers, although I do use my pinkie quite of often to backspace, and other fingers for etc. 50WPM! (I know, slow to those who can do 90WPM, but I had the third highest type speed in my typing class. Stupid guy with 82WPM. :( )

Imperator161 April 15th, 2014 7:54 PM

I type using the "traditional" two-hand method. I'm generally a fairly fast typist, though I've been switching keyboards a lot lately (two laptops, one of which has more widely-spaced keys than the other), which has been slowing me down a bit. I just got about 90 WPM on a typing test I pulled up quickly online.

Tsutarja April 16th, 2014 2:05 AM

I use both of my hands to type, though I use my right hand more than my left. Usually when I type, I typically begin keystrokes with my right hand, and use my left hand for easy access to keys on the left side of the keyboard just so I don't have to move my hand.

Candy April 16th, 2014 3:19 AM

My fashion? I seriously don't know. But I think it's like I just place my hands on the keyboard and they just type automatically lol. xDD

Although I semi use the asdfjkl; way because I used to learn it back at elementary. Just that I'm doing unconsciously lol. xD

Phantom April 17th, 2014 12:02 AM

I just sort of type by muscle memory. I don't look a the keyboard or anything. I don't use my thumbs though, I noticed. I don't use the home keys or whatever, just memory type.

I type super fast though, usually over 90 wpm.

moon April 17th, 2014 12:55 AM

I don't look at the keyboard, seriously I'm more confused if I look than if I don't. I've tested my muscle memory by thinking of words and moving my fingers without a keyboard below, as if I wanted to write the word out. My fingers remember where the buttons sit :p I think I write pretty fast, any faster and my keyboard can't really put the letters in the right order because I press them down at once.

My left thumb, I've realized, doesn't do much, if anything. My right thumb is the "space-presser". My left little finger presses "shift" but I don't think my right little finger does anything at all. Huh! My right ring finger or whatever the English term is, is the one to press '

Funny how we've learned to express ourselves through a keyboard, when you really think about it.
