TMs, TMs, TMs

Before generation five, technical machines were for one-time use only; once you've used it up, it'd disappear from your backpack forever. In Black and White, thankfully, all of that had changed; now, once you find or purchase a TM, they would remain in your back permanently. Though, they're still erasable, but since you always have them with you, you're able to re-learn them at any given time. So, anyway, what are your thoughts on this? Do you like it, or do you not? If no, then why? Discuss, guys! 8D

This was one of the best things introduced in the 5th generation. Now I didn't have to make crucial decisions about what TM I'm going to teach to which Pokemon. I hope in future games we can be able to forget HM moves.

Hikamaru April 17th, 2014 2:42 AM

This definitely has to be one of the best changes made in the 5th Generation. It's now much easier to give decent type coverage in your Pokemon's moveset without having to worry about losing the move after you use its TM. I was glad they kept this for 6th Gen, and presumably every new generation from there on.

Arkayide April 17th, 2014 7:04 AM

It certainly does make things a lot easier, but it is kind of weird to get used to. Then again, the only TM I ever used before Gen IV was Hyper Beam. :3

The best thing to ever happen in a Pokémon game.

This. Oh my friggin' god, it is so awesome getting to teach your Pokémon the same move over and over with no restrictions (well, except the PP being carried over). Makes it easy to train up new Pokémon, and you don't have to worry about wasting that one TM you spent so many BP you get later on, oh my god thank you Game Freak.

The only possible excuse I can think of for anyone calling it a negative is that it'd make the game too easy. I see it as more convenient. Easy and convenient are two different things. Thankfully it was carried over to XY as well.

Captain Barnacle April 17th, 2014 11:02 AM

One of the best additions to Pokemon B&W, if not THE best. It was annoying that only HMs could be used more than once before this generation.

classiccartoonsftw April 18th, 2014 12:59 AM

I'm glad they made TM's re-usable in the fifth gen onwards. And I agree with Crackle that it doesn't make the games too easy. In fact, it actually makes the games more fun, because it makes certain Pokemon more interesting.

Sheep April 24th, 2014 3:27 PM

This was the best thing that has ever happened in Pokemon ever. It was such a chore to re-get a TM you've already used.. sometimes even too much of a pain. I had a lot of bad memories getting specific TMs more than once and wouldn't do it again.

It was about time, too, given how many Pokemon are in the games by now.

Jellicent♀ April 24th, 2014 7:10 PM

Permanent TMs are gods gift to man. The fact that I didn't have to spend another $80k at a casino to get another Ice Beam is just wonderful, and it actually makes TM hunting much more rewarding. They've become like those rare weapons you find in other games, and even though some aren't that great, you just HAVE to have them.

Starry Windy April 24th, 2014 8:08 PM

I like this change, because I can teach the same TM moves to any Pokémon way easier. This is one of the best change for me, saving me from some efforts and money :)

Arc April 24th, 2014 8:20 PM

I absolutely love it. Nevermore would I have to go the casino just to get Flamethrower, Ice Beam, or Thunderbolt. Nevermore that I would have to grind 80 BP just for an Earthquake TM. I love unlimited TMs, it's one the best changes that came from Gen V.

I'm surprised it took five generations for the idea to be implemented though.

Radiam April 26th, 2014 11:34 AM

This was my favorite feature of the fifth generation. I didn't have to worry about losing a TM when using it, which was a really good feeling. Being able to reuse them for an unlimited amount of times was probably the best thing about the fifth generation in my opinion. I'm even more glad that GameFreak is still keeping this idea, because I probably would never play Pokemon again if the feature was axed from the games. I've gotten to use to it now, I can't turn back.

Miau April 26th, 2014 12:56 PM

Definitely very glad about it. Given how many Pokemon we have now, it makes sense for it to be this way. They're also really fun to collect. It's pretty great that you can teach the moves to as many Pokemon as you'd like, and also keep the TM for your collection. What's not to like?

Evening April 26th, 2014 4:09 PM

The best thing that happened, seriously. I don't have to start a new game just to get another TM26.
Makes the process of getting perfect pokemon much easier.

Then next time, there will be no HMs LOLOLOLOL!

Akiba April 26th, 2014 4:10 PM

I agree that this is one of the best things to ever be added to the games.

But recently I've been seeing a lot of people using parties with an awful lot of Dragon Claws, Earthquakes, and X-Scissors... :(

It's kind of a draw.

Demon Wolf April 26th, 2014 9:44 PM

I luv that feature gives us trainers an edge on battling

Elements1 April 26th, 2014 9:47 PM

This was my favorite feature if not the best feature in B/W. I hated the TM system before, I used a special TM and then I never used that pokemon again and it was wasted :/ Great new implantation!

Khoshi April 28th, 2014 4:11 AM

One of the best things ever added in all of Pokemon, in my opinion. Not only could you teach one TM to a large number of your Pokemon, but now if you messed up or got a stronger move than the one you currently have, then no mistakes are made in replacing a move slot, that or making a mistake in teaching a bad move to a Pokemon. You won't lose the TM, so you lose...basically nothing.

Also, no more need of scouring the whole region for 2 of the same TM! You get one, you keep it for all of eternity.

BuizelBushwhacks April 28th, 2014 4:54 PM

The fact that TM's are just like HM's is one of the best things they have implemented in Gen 5. It's amazing how you can make a certain Pokemon learn a TM but you don't lose that TM. I think one of the best things in the game. I made everyone learn, who is able to learn Thunderbolt, learn it, just for fun.

Palkia April 29th, 2014 12:22 PM

The reusable TM's are really the only thing I liked about Gen 5. Sure they could make the game easy if you teach a good move to your entire team, but you never felt like you'd waste them and you always had those moves available to you when you got them. I felt that making them single use overcomplicated thing in the first place.

LavenderTownGhost May 1st, 2014 2:08 PM

I absolutely love this feature! It got annoying only being able to use TMs one time. Granted, it made the game more challenging, but it's nice to be able to use Shadow Ball more than once (I'm looking at YOU, Emerald >.>).

JustAnotherIllusion May 1st, 2014 11:59 PM

I nearly screamed when it told me that and tested it on one I didn't care about to make sure it was still there after I used it. Glad that they still differentiate between HM's and TM's though as I used to get so confused between Rock Smash and Brick Break for some reason. Used to pick up a pokemon with the TM and then wonder why it wasn't working before I realised I had the wrong move.

Dter ic May 2nd, 2014 7:39 AM

Being someone who started playing poemon when BW came out, I honestly thought TM's being reusable to be a natural part of the mechanics of the game. It certainly makes teaching good moves useful for your part i.e. teach Return as a reliable move to use for most of your pokemon early on.

I can't see myself being able to manage using one TM for one pokemon only.

Altairis May 2nd, 2014 8:59 PM

This is one of the best features of the newer games!! I mean, did they really think we'd only use each TM once? I do dislike how they replaced some of the better TMs with bad moves (I'm pretty sure I'm not even going to use Struggle Bug once!) but it's still amazing <3 I can never go back lol.
