eSports

In the past, this is a topic that would have gotten laughed out of the room, but nowadays, we have thousands of people flying from all over the world to watch League of Legends tournaments, sold-out crowds, celebrities, even reality shows around them. However, with this there are growing pains; when your manager is just a friend there for fun, how does he tell a player that the player isn't playing up to scratch? How do you fire someone from the team they helped create? Without a support structure in place to allow subs to live in the area of the games and practice with the team, how does a team actually deal with a sick player?

Some of these have unique solutions, because of eSports; for example, because the games are online it would be a slight handicap (depending on where they live) but a substitute could be played from anywhere in the world. But on the other hand, some of the problems are unique to eSports, and don't exist in physical sports; how do you handle streaming your practice, which makes you money from subscribers but also reveals strategies to the other teams?

I'm not really asking for a one-off post thread about your favorite eSports teams or whether you like to watch. I'm asking for a more nuanced D&D type discussion about how eSports and physical sports interact, and whether there's a chance that eSports will become just as respected.

eSports... I have been watching StarCraft tournament recently and they are enjoyable to watch. The only thing is that I do not think that eSports will become as respected as normal sports. The main factor is... it's video games. That is the main mindset a lot of people have. "Why the hell are there people playing video game tournaments, don't they got a life or so?" is a common comment I hear around me. It is ridiculous, as I've seen weirder things becoming a real "thing". I hope someday people will respect it as much as "normal" sports and hopefully it will get broadcasted on TV someday aswell :P

Is the StarCraft scene as crazy as the League of Legends scene? I would have thought that respect would never be given to eSports before I saw how close to it LoL is - I think it was the reality show that put me over the edge for it.

It used to be. LoL is now one of the biggest eSports scenes out there, while StarCraft is the 2nd biggest eSports when it comes to the big tournaments.
