Ethernet over Powerline?
My brother has looking into this for a while now, because where we are in our house, we don't have the strongest wifi signal, and it sometimes cuts in and out. What I want to know is: how effective is network connectivity over powerline? Does it work at all, and could it damage any equipment? What are the pros and cons?

We've tried it in our house in the past as an alternative to running cable... it works, but it's very slow, and reliability can be spotty. Too much interference from the electrical current being carried over those wires. You'd honestly be better off just stringing an Ethernet cable along the wall or setting up a signal boosting wireless access point at an intermediary point in your house. It works in theory since electrical wiring is copper wiring, but in practice it's not that great. We just ended up running a cable under the floor through our basement ceiling in the end because it was that slow and unreliable.
tl;dr: It works but I don't recommend it because it's generally painfully slow. |
A sufficiently good Wi-Fi connection should be more reliable and faster than any method of networking over power lines; consider using a Wi-Fi signal booster to reduce the hassle of, well, everything. Or upgrade your router ('s antenna(s)), if that's possible.
Sometimes, even moving the Wi-Fi router can do wonders, if the Wi-Fi router is not located optimally. Try to locate the Wi-Fi router somewhere near the devices, or at the centre of the entire housing unit you reside in, if you're using a router with omnidirectional antenna(s). If directional, point the antennas to the correct location! |
The center of our house is the kitchen. The router is not located there because my parents are so stuck-up about this and the router has to be where their computer is, which is in their room on the other side of the house.
Thanks for the tips, y'all! I have considered running ethernet cables to our rooms as a possibility, but my parents have said they don't want me nor my brother doing that either for some odd reason, because it'd involve getting under the house. |
I've tried this before and it's ungodly slow and the connection cuts in and out occasionally. It's really not something I'd recommend for anyone. u_u

I'm using... a Netgear something; can't tell you since I don't know where the box and manual are. It works perfectly for me, as poor as I expected it to be. How well it'll work for you depends on your wiring. In my experience it has never cut out at all, unless the router itself has. I guess, given others' experiences here, it might generally be poor in the USA (or everyone tried to install more than one pair of the devices, or didn't plug both ends directly into the mains). As for equipment damage... again, I don't have the manual on-hand, but I would think you could get one online in PDF format; there's little doubt the relevant information is common to all of them.
