Choose your team based on the heroes and deities of North American tribal folklore! The North American continent is subdivided into ten regions. Each region is home to a number of tribes, and each region is also represented by three Pokemon types.

THE BONDS OF KINSHIP
]|-\/-|[::]|-\/-|[::]|-\/-|[::]|-\/-|[

You must choose one tribe to affiliate with. After that, you must choose a Pokemon to be your Spirit Guide.

Therefore, the Pokemon that are available to you are based on the following:
- Deities common to all of North America
- Deities common to the region that your tribe is in
- Pokemon that match your region's types
- Deities unique to your tribe
- Your Spirit Guide

You must use at least one Pokemon that represents a deity from your tribe.
Male deities must be represented by male Pokemon, and female deities by female Pokemon. Genderless Pokemon will work for deities of either gender.
Some deities have specific rules that must also be followed.
You may only have one of each deity, unless otherwise specified.

]|-/\-|[::]|-/\-|[::]|-/\-|[::]|-/\-|[
GODS AND HEROES
]|-\/-|[::]|-\/-|[::]|-\/-|[::]|-\/-|[

The following four deities are available to all challengers, regardless of tribal affiliation:

-: Horned Snake :-

The Horned Snake is a supernatural freshwater serpent, who can shape-shift, turn invisible, and hypnotize. It is often blamed for drowning deaths. It bestows powerful medicine upon people who defeat or help it, and it can control the weather.

Spoiler:

-: Napi (or, Old Man) :-

Napi is a shapeshifter, trickster, and a troublemaker, but he is a well-intentioned demigod who is partly responsible for shaping the world that the Blackfeet live in. He and his wife, Old Woman, were the first humans, and they created the world and its creatures. He would frequently help the people or teach them things. Old man is sometimes associated with Coyote.
Spoiler:

When Old Man made the bighorn sheep, he set it out on the prairie. But it was slow and awkward, so he put it up in the mountains, where it did well. When Old man created the antelope, he put it among the hills and mountains. But it could not keep its footing, so he moved it to the grasslands, where it could run swiftly.

One winter, when Old Man was hunting with Wolf, Wolf fell under the ice of the river. Old Man was afraid to be alone in the cold, and as he went downriver to the place where there was a hole in the ice, he was crying and wailing. Kingfisher was there, and laughed at the sight of a grown man crying like a baby. Old Man heard it, and threw his war club at Kingfisher, who ducked quickly. The war club grazed Kingfisher's head, and that is why the feathers on a Kingfisher's head always stick up straight.

Old Man saw some squirrels playing in hot ashes. They would cover each other up, and stay underneath for as long as they could bear it. Old Man went up to the squirrels and asked to play as well. The squirrels wanted to show him how, so Old Man said "Let me cover you all up at once, to save time." They agreed. When the squirrels cried to be taken out, Old Man just piled more ashes on top. He cooked the squirrels to a crisp and had himself a big meal.

The Sun God, ruler of the Sky People. He is the principal deity of the Blackfeet, but not the creator of the universe. His wife is the Moon (Komorkis), and their son is the hero Morning Star (Apisirahts). Naatosi created the Sky People and their kindgdom, and he also created Old Man (I think).
Spoiler:

Naatosi had a pair of medicine pants that he used to catch deer. He would go into the brush, and the pants would produce flames, scaring the deer out of hiding. Old Man decided to take the pants while Naatosi was sleeping. Old Man ran as far as he could, until morning when the sun rose. Of course, the whole world is Naatosi's lodge, so Old Man was caught. But Naatosi told Old Man to keep the medicine pants. When Old Man got hungry, he used the pants to scare some deer out of hiding. But the pants stayed aflame, so he ran and jumped into the river nearby. The medicine pants were all burned up, and so were Old Man's legs. Perhaps that was Naatosi's punishment for the theft.

He was in love with Komorkis, and he would watch her as she worked, while Naatosi was off hunting. Snake began to flirt with Komorkis, and one day Naatosi caught the two of them. He was so angry that he smashed Snake's beautiful body into a million tiny pieces, which is why snakes are so small now.

But Feather-Woman was getting water from the creek when a handsome man came up to her. He was Morning-Star, and he asked Feather-Woman to be his bride up in the Sky Lands. She agreed, and he took her to the Sky Lands right away, where she lived for a while with Morning-Star and his parents, the Sun and the Moon.

When Apisirahts took Feather-Woman to the sky lands, his mother Komorkis showed Feather-Woman how to dig for roots and such. But there was a Great Turnip near Spider's house that she must never touch. Feather-Woman was very curious, of course, and pulled up the Great Turnip to see what the fuss was about. The turnip turned out to be a plug to fill the hole in the sky where Morning-Star had brought her to the Sky Lands. When Naatosi and Komorkis found out, they banished Feather-Woman from the Sky Lands, and she eventually died from grief.

Soatsaki may not be in the party at the same time as Naatosi, Komorkis, or Apisirahts.

Poia is a great hero of the Blackfoot people. He is the son of Morning-Star and Feather-Woman.

Poia was a very sad and lonely boy when he was young. He was ridiculed for claiming to be the son of Apisirahts, and he had an ugly scar on his face, and they called him Scar-Face. Poia went to the medicine man and asked how he could get rid of the scar. He was told to take a difficult path to reach the Sky Lands. Poia made it there, and rested at the gates because he was weary. The Sun and Moon were angry at the intruder at first, but soon recognized him as their grandson. They took Poia in, healed his scar, and taught him the Sun Dance, which would bring healing to his tribe if they performed it once a year. First update:

Spoiler:

I began with a Turtwig (still need the dex entry for for my
HG). After I caught a Starly, I traded over a Lunatone egg and a Solrock egg that I bred up on HG. I named them Brother and Sis', respectively. Brother hatched with Reflect, Embargo, and Psychic, while Sis' hatched with Light Screen, Embargo, and Rock Slide.

I wasted no time proceeding to the first Gym. Sis' took down Roark's Geodude using Fire Spin and Rock Slide (with the help of a couple Potions), but lost to Cranidos. Brother did some setting up with Hypnosis and Reflect, which was unnecessary since Roark's Cranidos and Onix both went down with a single Psychic.

Since I got my first badge, I allowed myself to trade in the Snorunt egg I bred on HG. Her mother was bred with a German Castform, and hatched with Disable, Hail, Weather Ball, and Shadow Ball. I spent some time trying to MM a shiny one, but no luck. Once I beat the second Gym, I'll trade in a Dawn Stone and evolve Sedna into a Froslass.

Commander Mars gave me a tough time at the Valley Windworks. Her Purugly took down both Sedna and Sis', but fell to a single Psychic from Brother.

I skipped the fishermen after Eterna Forest to keep Sedna from becoming overleveled. When I reached Eterna City, I headed straight for Gardenia.

At the Eterna Gym, Sedna reached Lv 20 after soloing all the trainers. After healing up, I challenged the leader. Sedna prepped with a Hail, and the battle was over four Weather Balls later. And after a trip to the Poké Center, Sedna became a Froslass with the help of a Dawn Stone. Used the TM I won to teach Grass Knot to Brother.

Caught a Pachirisu, named her Nuts, taught her Cut.

The stone pair gave Team Galactic a thumping, but Commander Jupiter took them both down with Skuntank. Sedna would have been toast too, if not for Disable.

Caught a male Cleffa to be a Little People, named him Astro. Got the Good Rod from a fisherman, so I grabbed my Nuts and headed over to the Valley Windworks. Got me a Finneon to be Anarteq. Boxed Astro. Gave Sis' a Hard Stone I found while digging. Gave Sedna a Spooky Plate. Gave Anarteq a Shell Bell.

Lost at the Fighting-type gym, so I took Anarteq out for some grindage. I KO'd about 60 Geodude, and battled trainers on Route 214 until he evolved into a Lumineon.

Brother took down the Meditite with ease. I sent out Anarteq against Lucario. It was a difficult fight, but I got the opening I needed when Water Pulse induced confusion. Sedna stomped Machoke's face with Shadow Ball and I got my third badge.

After a brief tussle with Team Galactic, I over on to Pastoria. I trained the rock pair on the way down. The two of them worked well together at the lakefront restaurant.

Used TMs to teach Flash to Anarteq (which I totally should have done before challenging Hearthome's Gym), and Sunny Day and Secret Power to Sis'. Found a Meadow Plate while underground, Brother is holding it for the time being. Caught a Bibarel HM buddy, named him Barton. Caught a Staravia HM buddy, named him Skyy.

I stomped face all over Wake Crasher Wake's gym with Brother. Didn't even step out to heal.

When I made it to Hearthome, I skipped straight to the leader and pummeled her Ghost-types. Sedna's work was done in four Shadow Balls I think. She even outran Gengar.

Anarteq cleared the way to the next leader, no problem at all. The fight with the leader, however, was tricky. Bronzor went down after Sis' set up Sedna with Sunny Day. Bastiodon was tough, but after Anarteq blinded it with Flash and called down the rain, Sedna knocked it down as well. Anarteq put the Steelix down without a fuss.

Progress has been slow for me. I've nearly made it to Snowpoint City to catch up with Markus and get my seventh badge. I think I burned myself out on challenges '-_-

Be on the lookout for some a couple of changes to this challenge! I'm going to take a page out of LilJz's book and assign each region 2-3 types. Challengers will be able to use any Pokemon of those types, in addition to the specific deities of whichever tribe/region was chosen. I may also change the way in which your Spirit Guide is chosen, to give a wider variety and imitate the way in which tribe members would receive their spirit guides.

NyxShooter July 29th, 2014 6:21 AM

I think this might need to be simplified, just as friendly advice. I had a decent amount of trouble comprehending it, as it is overly-complex. Or maybe that's just me, who knows.

I think you're on to something there. I seem to recall hearing that before.

The basic idea is to imagine that you are in one of these tribes. The Pokemon you can use consist of:
- Deities common to all of North America
- Deities common to the region your tribe is in
- Pokemon that match your region's types
- Deities unique to your tribe
- Your Spirit Guide

Other than that, there are some deities that can't be in the team at the same time, and other little things specific to certain deities. All of the other "general rules" are pretty much unnecessary.

Is that a bit more clear?

NyxShooter July 29th, 2014 7:00 AM

Yes I think that is much more clear. I would also like to suggest that maybe you should list all the Pokemon in one group like this

Cherokee ~Snip Snip~
XXX Pokemon
XXX Pokemon
XXX Pokemon
XXX Pokemon

Red Cloud
XXX Pokemon
XXX Pokemon
XXX Pokemon
XXX Pokemon

and have a whole list of them in one spoiler rather than have a bunch of them seperated into multiple spoilers. This doesn't mean that you should follow my recommendation though.

Yeah I guess I'm the weird one in that I prefer all the spoilers. Without them, you'd have a huuuge list of stuff to scroll through. They're sort of functioning like a list of hyperlinks on a web page as opposed to a wall of text.

I may have to come up with something like what you've suggested, but we'll see.

Honestly, you might just want to format it a bit better. Right now, it just looks like a huge block of text.

With the insane spacing and text size glitches I keep having, this is the best I can possibly do... without CSS. Which is why I'll be formatting it with CSS this weekend :]

For now, I suppose you'll just have to read slowly and look at the section headers.

EDIT: CSS is finished. Sorry for the massive amounts of extra spaces, but wherever I put one blank line, I end up with four. I'm at a loss.

Update:

Spoiler:

Wrangled with Team Galactic a bit and headed to Snowpoint City.

After what seemed like a long time, I made it to Snowpoint and took down the Ice-type trainers there. Abomasnow was a bit tricky to deal with.

The next day, I had the final confrontation with Team Galactic. Their boss was a tough cookie, but of course I won in the end. I added Dialga to my team after naming it Time Lord. I have a tough time against dark-type moves, so Dialga should be a real boon.

Next I went out to Sunyshore and nabbed my eighth and final badge. After randomly running into Jasmine, I set out towards Victory Road.

If anyone's thinking about taking this challenge... do it! Don't be shy! You can always impose additional rules to increase the difficulty, like using only one of the regional types, not using legendaries, or even combining this with a Nuzlocke.

If you don't want to start a new game, you could do an Around the World variant: pick a Lv 5 Pokémon to be your spirit guide, go to the starting town, and journey to all parts of the region using Pokémon you catch along the way. You should partake in re-battles and battle facilities often, and challenge the E4 to finish up!

I should also mention that you've gotta use at least one of the deities unique to your tribe. This isn't directly stated in the rules, so I'll amend them soon-ish. rules updated :]

Okay, your sign-up looks good. Which deity is Alakazam? The witiko? o_O

I think starting with just your spirit guide and adding new members as you get badges would be a good additional rule for your challenge. It worked pretty well for my Sinnoh run. Up to you, though.

Inuit challenge update

I'm really dreading Victory Road and the E4 for some unknown reason On hold.

new sign-up

Tribe: Blackfoot
Spirit guide: Beldum

Since I'm from the Midwest, I've been wanting to do a Great Plains run. And I ended up getting OR even though I was planning on *not* adding another plate to the pile, so, now this is happening.

A lot of the Blackfoot deities will work for legendaries, so I'm adopting a rule; I will only have one deity in my party at a time.

BoltThief November 25th, 2014 2:00 PM

Alakazam is grandmother fox and sure I will try it that way.
They will be added in at the approximate level of the gym just beaten

Tek January 10th, 2015 1:06 PM

I've finished both of my runs. I'll edit this post later to add pics/teams.

I'm slowing down on challenges, so I won't be able to keep this going by myself anymore. It's up to you, BoltThief, and anyone else who takes the challenge.
