The 719 Challenge

Rules:
1. In this challenge the first participant has to use the first six evolution lines in the National Pokedex.

The next challenger has to use the next six and so on. If you don't know which Pokemon are next to use, use this list: http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pok%C3%A9mon_by_National_Pok%C3%A9dex_number
2. You are allowed to use only 4 or 5 Pokemon too. Also you are allowed to skip 1 Pokemon.
3. If you skip 1 Pokemon the next challenger HAS to use that Pokemon.
4. You can decide the game you want to play, but keep in mind that if all of the Kanto Pokemon have been used that you can't play R/B/Y anymore and so on...
5. Not Fully Evolved Pokemon like Golbat and Scyther in R/B/Y count as fully evolved in their generation.
6. Pokemon with no evolutions like Farfetch'd and Lapras also count
7. Shinys and HMs slaves are allowed. If you get a Shiny you can swap that Shiny Pokemon with a Pokemon from your team.
8.
You might need to hack your rom or trade with friends to get your pokemon, so trading and hacking is allowed.
9. Megas are allowed
10. Legendaries do count!

Let's see if we can use all 719 Pokemon :D

So for example:

Player 1:

Part 1 of my adventure:
Spoiler:

Hacked Squirtle and Bulbasaur in the first route
Started my adventure and caught all my Pokemon
Defeated Brock with a Lv 8 Bulbasaur and a Lv 10 Sqiurtle
I kinda feel like Ash, using 5 of his Pokes

-Yoshi- April 30th, 2014 4:02 AM

If I were playing FireRed, would I hack Sandshrew in at the beginning or where he is found in LeafGreen?

You can decide
If you don't want to hack it in you could also skip Sandslash and take the next poke which is Nidoking i think

I'll sub in Nidoking/Sandslash if the above player decides to skip or use Sandslash. All of the Pokemon can be found in Blue without hacking, and most are found before or at Mt. Moon.

Silly, I didn't submit a sign up. It's on you. I was just asking a question.

If it's ok with Matzeho, I'll just take Sandslash and Nidoking since it's undecided. I'm not sure though, since he said you can skip only one Pokemon...

Matzeho1996 April 30th, 2014 11:47 AM

Ferialgatr13, Gucci Meme and Yoshi I'm a bit confused now so I have a idea if it is ok for you
I made 3 teams and everyone of you decides for 1 team, is that ok? (the first here chooses first)
Team 1: http://www.greenchu.de/sprites/xy/015.gifhttp://www.greenchu.de/sprites/xy/022.gifhttp://www.greenchu.de/sprites/xy/024.gifhttp://www.greenchu.de/sprites/xy/026.gifhttp://www.greenchu.de/sprites/xy/028.gifhttp://www.greenchu.de/sprites/xy/031.gif

The next player starts with Arcanine

I hope you like my idea :D

CelticsPhan May 1st, 2014 2:59 AM

I'll take Team 2 considering I've already started and got Oddish, Paras and Zubat.

Defeated every trainer on the Nugget Bridge and the routes
Pidgey evolved
Defeated Misty with Ivysaur

This look like it could be very interesting. Well if I understand it right the sprites of the Pokemon you just posted are the team's of someone else not the next person to sign up. So I'm going to give this a shot.
Name: HeatedFennekin

Let me know if this team is correct before I make an update. First update should be tomorrow or Saturday. One more thinf how am I supposed to evolve Kadabra into Alakazam if I use a rom?

Feraligatr13 May 1st, 2014 1:07 PM

This team is fine; I'll do it.

This team is totally correct :D You can either hack Alakazam into the game if possible or you can use this randomizer program, where you can remove trade evolutions (i think there are more possibilities, but I only know these):
http://pokehacks.dabomstew.com/randomizer/

Ferialgatr13 I'm happy that the team is ok for you :D

I was gonna skip Farfetch'd, but it gets both Fly and Cut which is useful, especially since nothing else I could get learned Cut.

Okay. I will post what happened for me when i beat a Gym Leader or other important stuff.

EDIT: Okay because this took forever because of certain difficulties (running out of Pokeballs and taking forever to find an Ekans with 40% encounter rate, i decided to update now)

Spoiler:
Picked Bulbasaur as starter, lost the first battle cause it didn't matter and then captured the following Pokemon:
-Weedle named Stinger
-Spearow named 4th Hokage
-Sandshrew named Nobody
-Pikachu named Madara
-Nidoran(F) named Susan
-Ekans named Snake
Time to grind

EDIT 2: Just went against Rival, his Pidgey got 6 crits in a row >_>

AzureSparkz May 2nd, 2014 3:32 PM

Well since my universal notebook charger finally came in the mail I can use my good laptop instead of my other one that crashes without any warning. Woot woot can finally post screen shots! Good thing I signed up when I did I get to use a party full of some of my all time favorite pokemon. Ummm I kinda made a mistake when posting before I meant to put Golem in with the rest of the team I got

My progress
Spoiler:
Got through Viridian Forest.
Level up Nobody(Sandshrew) to level 14, then checked Bulbapedia and saw it can't learn any fighting moves by leveling up.
Saw on Bulbapedia that NidoranF can learn a fighting move at level 9, but it was for Generation 6.
Trained Susan(NidoranF) to level 11 then gave up cause it didn't learn a fighting move.
During fight with Brock Susan leveled up and learned Double Kick, which allowed me to beat Brock.
Went through Mt. Moon.
In Mt. Moon, Susan evolved to Nidorina and Stinger evolved twice, to Kakuna and to Beedril.
Beaten Douche(Rival) and got the stolen TM Dig (which pretty much makes me the thief because the game doesn't allow it to give it back).
Gave Snake(Ekans) to Daycare man while leveling up my other Pokemon.
Beaten Misty by only using Madara(Pikachu).
Got Snake back, who only grew by 2 levels despite making 10 laps around the Daycare.
Saved

Matzeho1996 May 3rd, 2014 4:25 AM

My progress:
Spoiler:

Went through Rock Tunnel
Defeated every trainer there and on the following routes
Gambled for Ice Beam for Wartotle and Shadow Ball for Ratticate
Defeated Team Rocket
Defeated Erika, thanks to Pidgeotto and Charmeleon

Lusus May 3rd, 2014 6:16 AM

Forgot to mention, evolved Susan(Nidorina) with Moon Stone i found in Mt. Moon.

Spoiler:
Beaten Rival on S.S. Anne
Got Cut
Was the last person to see S.S. Anne ever again
Beaten Lt. Surge
Got through Rock Tunnel
4th Hokage(Spearow) evolved into Fearow
Nobody(Sandshrew) evolved into Sandslash
Passed through Lavender Town
Bought Thunderstone in Celeadon City
Evolved Madara(Pikachu) into Raichu
Defeated Erika
Saved
Currently have 5/6 fully evolved Pokemon, the only one remaining is Snake(Ekans) who is the weakest on my team atm.

Gonna go away for a while, but hopefully it won't be long

CelticsPhan May 3rd, 2014 7:16 AM

FINISHED with Pokemon Blue!

Spoiler:

-Started off with Nidoran Male after a good hour of searching for it (5% encounter rate outside Pokemon League).

BROCK (Badge #1)
As Nidoran struggles and needs training, I switching Nido with Squirtle to take down the Rock types, then used Nidoran for the rest of the game.

-At Mt. Moon I found the core of my team: Paras, Zubat, Clefairy.

I used Moon Stones to evolve to Nidoking and Clefable, which helped me big time in the early part of the game.
-Crushed my Rival with Nidoking and Clefable.
-Hacked in Oddish (silly me forgetting that Oddish isn't in Blue!)
-Defeated every Trainer at and around Nugget Bridge.

To ease the situation and use the most of my team as possible, I did the Mew Glitch to grab my only HM Slave. This worked out because Vulpix didn't come until the fourth Gym.

MISTY (Badge #2)
I used Oddish, Paras and Nidoking to take her down. Status-inflicting moves are very underrated in my opinion.

-Moving on..
-Crush Rival @ SS Anne

SURGE (Badge #3)
Paras knew Dig, so I used Paras for Surge's Voltorb before it fanted.
Nidoking Thrashed the Pikachu and Raichu for a victory.

Landed in Lavender, then grabbed my Vulpix, who I later evolved along with Gloom to complete my team.

ERIKA (Badge #4)
I used Golbat, Nidoking, and my Parasect to defeat Erika, and they were untouchable. The fact that I could get Ice Beam from Celadon Department Store really helped. Also, I bought TM07 Horn Drill!

KOGA (Badge #5)
After grabbing the Earthquake TM from Silph Co., I was able to defeat Koga with Nidoking alone.

Now that I could Surf, I went down to Cinnabar to challenge Blaine.

BLAINE (Badge #6)
For reference this is not in order; I find it easier to fight Blaine rather than Sabrina because Surf and Earthquake are available at this point in the game.

It was like a rerun of the last Gym, where Nidoking Earthquaked to victory.

*Back to Saffron to finish Sliph Co. and Sabrina*

SABRINA (Badge #7)
I gave the job to Parasect, whose Spore and Mega Drain tactics kept her Abra line from dismantling my team up with Psybeam. Despite being the slowest Pokemon in the game (up to Gen 6), Parasect held its own with the fast Kadabra and Alakazam.

GIOVANNI (Badge #8)
This was an effort by Nidokng only, whose Ice Beam, Earthquake and Horn Drill worked to perfection.

-Beat my Rival just before Victory Road.

LORELEI
Thunderbolt is a good move and all, but it doesn't quite kill Lorelei's bulky Ice/Water Pokemon. Therefore, I gave Nidoking an X Accuracy and Horn Drilled her team away.

BRUNO
Clefable and Golbat won this battle for me. Clefable knew Bubblebeam to defeat the Onixs and Golbat Toxic'd and Wing Attacked. It was a great relief that the Machamp does not have the Guts Ability (because this is Gen 1!).

AGATHA
I still believe Agatha is the second hardest Elite Four member because a whole lot can go wrong against her. I gave Nidoking an X Speed to attack the Gengars first without Confuse Ray or Hypnosis ruining my plans. Because Nido outsped her team now, I could Earthquake the Ghosts and Arbok, then Ice Beam Golbat.

LANCE
The versatility of Nidoking was important in this battle as well. It requires 2 X Speeds to get past Lance's Aerodactyl, and I was not willing to roll the dice to see if his Gyarados' Hydro Pump would hit and kill Nidoking. So one TBolt for the Gyarados, Horn Drill to the Dragonairs and... Nidoking fainted!

Well, it's a good thing I'm running a full team. I swapped in Clefable for a classic ToxicStall and Ice Beam to soften the Fossil Dragon up. Next came Dragonite, who took as many as three Ice Beams from Clefable after Lance healed his signature Pokemon. It used Agility and Barrier instead of blowing my Clefable away with Hyper Beam, which seemed silly. Game, set, and match.

CHAMPION BLUE
Here we go. I might add that my team besides Nidoking is at an underleved 50, while Nidoking is a good 56. X Speed and Accuracy for Nidoking because I knew his Pidgeot was only going to spam Agility for the fist two turns.

I made a mistake to not use an Ether to replenish Horn Drill, so the rest of my team would have to help in the event where Nido died again.

Horn Drill to Pidgeot.
TBolt to his Gyarados (TY Critical Hits!).
Earthquake for Alakazam... and it did not kill for reasons unknown.

Ok then, Alakazam, chew on Clefable! ToxicStall and a Tri Attack brought the Magician down. I rembered to bring Revives thankfully, so I brought Nidoking back to finish Blue. One X Accuracy was used, then EQ to Arcanine, and Horn Drill to Rhydon and Venusaur for the win!

WE DID IT!

I wasted all that time evolving Geodude for this Ok, sounds good I guess. Dodrio is a pretty good Pokemon in Gen 1.

Done with Pokemon Red!

Spoiler:

We'll omit Brock for time's sake because it was done with my starter.

Right before Mount Moon I caught the Spearow I would later trade for Farfetch'd. (What kind of idiot trades a Farfetch'd, a Pokemon dumb in its own right, for the most common bird in and around Vermilion City?)

MISTY
I used the Farfetch'd I just traded for. It knew Swords Dance at this time, so it could knock her out quickly.

Since the location of the Machamp trader in Yellow is right after Misty, I felt that now was the time to trade my Machamp from Yellow to Red. Side note: While my game appears to look like Yellow, it is just the Gen 2/Color Hack of Pokemon Red created on this website!

SURGE
I taught my new Machamp Dig, which was all I needed to beat Surge. I could not use Farfetch'd because of its weakness.

ERIKA
Too much grinding led to my Farfetch'd and Machamp not being able to obey me. It was a freaking numbers game to get Swords Dance/Peck/Body Slam working the way it shoukd. When I finally won, I was able to complete my team.

I found a Slowpoke, Rapidash, Dodrio and everything else from previous save files in my emulator which were all around Lv.45. I waited until now to trade them because now they obey me for likely the rest of the game.

KOGA
I taught Machamp Earthquake, which made things a whole lot easier for this Gym and going forward. I had Machamp Rock Slide the Venomoth/Nats also.

BLAINE
A combo of Machamp and Slowbro for their Surf and Earthquake. Not hard at all! Also, I learned that Slowbro can learn Fire Blast. I just taught TM38 to Rapidash, who was severely lacking in the STAB department. I didn't get to use Rapidash much!

SABRINA
The best stopper for Sabrina's Alakazam that I had was Slowbro. Fantastic Special and Defense allowed it to wall her fast though frail Abra family. Once Zam stopped spamming Recover, I beat her swiftly.

GIOVANNI
There was no reason to use anything besides Slowbro, but I let Machamp get in the mix. Surf, Psychic and Earthquake were all I needed to win.

Elite Four time!

LORELEI
Magneton was a stud in this battle. Thunderbolt hit everything in one shot.

BRUNO
I used Slowbro to defeat the Onix (plural) and switched to Farfetch'd to drop the Fighting types with Swords Dance/Body Slam.
I also learned that Slash (which crits everytime with Pokemon that have base speed >64) does not factor in stat increases/decreases like Swords Dance in Gen 1. Farfetch'd is still a very underrated Pokemon to use.

AGATHA
I was saving Slowbro for this battle as well as Lance because of Psychic and Ice Beam. It was a little slow (I promise you no pun intended) and getting put to Sleep, so i brought in Machamp to Earthquake the Gengars and Arbok. Golbat and Haunter were taken down by Slowbro's Psychic.

LANCE
Magneton drilled Gyarados with a single TBolt, then Slowbro Ice Beam'd the rest. Good fight.

CHAMPION BLUE
I would have called him Red if I were playing Red, but he's Blue and I'm Red so all is right in canon.
Back to the 'mons: Magneton put Gyarados and Pidgeot in their places.
Alakazam was beaten by Farfetch'd after a Swords Dance boost.
Machamp covered Arcanine with Earthquake.
Slowbro Surfed all over Rhydon.
And finally, Rapidash took us home by Fire Blasting Venusaur. GG!

I liked switching up my usual team which has more often than not had a Nidoking on it. Machamp and Slowbro were my favorites to use because they knew plenty of helpful moves. If I defeated this Challenge quickly it's because I like Gen 1, know the region by heart along with all of its tricks, and I wanted to do this Challenge.

Fun fact: my "Red" trainer wasn't the OT for any of these Pokemon. They all came from in-game trades, Yellow, and another Red file.

This looks interesting, I'd like to join!

Name: Bobadilla777
Game: Red
Team: (Assuming I started at the right spot) Dewgong, Muk, Cloyster, Onix, Hypno, Kingler

Skipping Gengar because trading isn't an option, and my knowledge of hacking/cheating is slim to none. Someone else gets to have fun with him.

Tell me if I did anything wrong, I fix it ASAP.

You can decide which Pokemon you would like to use. If you skip 1 Pokemon and use Lickitung (because it is next on the list) then the next player has to use the skipped pokemon. I hope I could help you :D

Bobadilla your team is totally alright :D

Alright, I've started up. I used a Randomizer to put Seel in as my starter. But the great thing is, Seel won't learn a move other than Headbutt until level 30. (And even then it's Growl xD) Can't wait for the Bubblebeam TM. But for updates, I beat my Rival and arrived in Pewter City.

According to your question, Chansey, Seadra and Rhydon also wouldn't count
They all count, because they are fully evolved in their Generation (skipping Tangela is totally ok :D)

Alright, then i got my team

Matzeho1996 May 7th, 2014 9:01 AM

Finished my game (sry the pictures are a bit big)
Spoiler:

Vs. Lorelei
http://i.imgur.com/qetAaIl.png
With my team I had no really good strategie against her, but I managed it somehow (Venusaur and Charizard did very good here)

Vs. Bruno
http://i.imgur.com/xkCan09.png
Very easy, Blastoise for the Onix(s) and Pidgeot and Butterfree for the Fighting Types

Vs. Agatha
http://i.imgur.com/vkTdG87.png
Ratticate Shadow Ball did a lot of damage to her Ghosts. Unfortunately her Gengar hit me 8 times with Hypnosis before he finally missed (there were also some Sludge Bomb crits which made this fight harder than it should be

Vs. Lance
http://i.imgur.com/c4lV4PX.png
My only option: Blastoise Ice Beam (Venusaur Toxic/Leech Seed Stall Gyarados)
In the end I won with Blastoise left, all other Pokemon fainted (did not use any Revive in this battle)

Vs. Gary
http://i.imgur.com/ISmjJwi.png
The easiest fight, Blastoise Ice Beamed Pidgeot and Surfed Rhydon, Alakazam survived Ratticate's Shadow Ball in the red and defeated it with Psychic, Pidgeot Return critted Alakazam (as he healed it), Charizard Blast Burned Exeggcutor, Venusaur Fenzy Planted Blastoise and Blastoise Hydro Cannoed Arcanine (I tought them the moves just for fun, I thought it is funny if the 3 Starters have their representive Move)

Update Time!
Spent time grinding Seel to Level 19 to defeat Brock using only Headbutt (15 uses) and Struggle.
Went through Mount Moon.
Taught Seel Water Gun via the TM
Defeated Rival (Seel is a little overleveled right now)
Defeated Misty-Only used Headbutt
On my way to Vermillion and my next party member, Drowzee!

Played all throughout this morning/afternoon and I finished another 719 with Red!

Spoiler:

-Beat Brock w/ starter

MISTY (Badge #2)
I got my Electrode in a trade. Though it did not obey me, it [eventually] knocked her Stars out.

SURGE (Badge #3)
I also traded for my Marowak, which Bone Clubbed his Pokemon.

ERIKA (Badge #4)
When I got my Exeggutor from a trade (I actually traded for all of them), it knew Psychic, which was good enough to whip her Grass types.

KOGA (Badge #5)
I taught Marowak Earthquake, and that made it able to sweep Koga easily.

BLAINE (Badge #6)
Marowak played against Blaine also, Earthquake all.

SABRINA (Badge #7)
I used the whole team to take her down, starting with Electrode. I taught Toxic to all of my Pokemon (most underrated move in the WHOLE GAME), and her trusty wizards eventually fell to Tox damage.

GIOVANNI (Badge #8)
Exeggutor beasted through this Gym with Solarbeam and Psychic. There was no chance for the Rocket Leader.

LORELEI
Electrode was the star in this fight, Thunderbolt dropped everything in two hits.

BRUNO
Exeggutor Solar'd the Onix and Psychic'd the Fighting types.

AGATHA
I used Marowak (who knew Fissure) and Gengar (Psychic and Tbolt) to bring her down. It took two X Speeds for Marowak to catch up with her Ghosts, but once Fissure was ready, it took down the Gengars.

LANCE
I made the mistake of forgetting to grab TM13 Ice Beam, but Thunderbolt and Toxic did just fine. I packed plenty of Hyper Potions to stall until the pseudo-Dragons died.

CHAMPION RIVAL
Led with Electrode, who dropped Pidgeot and Gyarados before switching out. Marowak Fissured Rhydon, Arcanine and his Exeggutor. Next, Gengar and my Exeggutor finished him off with their Psychic attacks.

So that's that.

GucciMeme you are extremely fast playing through a game... :D

Arlo May 12th, 2014 11:35 AM

Okay... I'll take one on.

Assuming ThePokemonGuardian did indeed skip Tangela:

User: Arlo
Game: Fire Red
Team: Tangela, Seaking, Mr. Mime, Scyther, Jynx, Electabuzz

I skipped Starmie (mostly unwillingly) because there are a bunch of version exclusives here and that was the only way to get it to work out.

Since Tangela doesn't show up until the end of Route 21, but that end happens to be right next to Pallet Town, I'm going to hack it in as a starter, and at level 7, so it actually has an attack, then I'm planning on catching/trading for the others in-game.

Matzeho1996 May 12th, 2014 11:41 AM

I start now my second journey of the 719 Challenge
Name: Matzeho
Game: Fire Red Omega
Pokemon: Magmar, Starmie, Pinsir, Gyarados, Lapras, Ditto
Skipped: Tauros

Oh and good luck to the next player, you can use the 3 Eeveelutions

Arlo May 12th, 2014 12:12 PM

Quick "update" - I was working off of the wrong gen's moveset - Tangela doesn't get Vine Whip at lvl 7 in gen III, so I'm going to hack it in at level 6, the same as the Venusaur I picked, and just see if it can survive with nothing other than Constrict for an attack.

CelticsPhan May 12th, 2014 12:22 PM

If I have the opportunity to use Tauros and the three Eeveelutions, I'll be back back for more!!!

Name: GucciMeme
Game: Red
Team: Tauros, Vaporeon, Jolteon, Flareon, Porygon, Kabutops
Skipped: Omanyte

The player that signs up after me is going to have an absolute squad, but I want to roll with the Eeveelutions.

Arlo May 12th, 2014 3:40 PM

First...

I actually sorted out the other day what the next team would have to be, and decided I wasn't much interested in using it, particularly when I saw the teams that were going to be available after that one. But after a couple days of no activity at all on this thread, I figured it was safe to assume that nobody else was interested in taking that team either, and I figured what the hell and took it anyway.

So it's sort of amusing to me how quickly the next two teams were claimed.

On to a bit of an update:
Spoiler:

http://i.imgur.com/2o6iEVt.png
http://imgur.com/2o6iEVt

I picked Bulbasaur as the starter since it's Grass type and fought the first rival battle, then hacked in a level 6 Tangela - Hardy nature and random stats - and off we went.

In case anyone was wondering, a base 10 physical attack on a Pokemon with better Sp Atk is not good. Luckily enough, with support from Ingrain and Sleep Powder, Constrict can eventually chip away at the level 2 and 3 Pidgeys and Rattatas on Route 1. The only real problem came when we encountered our first Sand Attack abusing level 5 Pidgey. Tangela was never in any real danger - good defense and Ingrain keeps it pretty healthy - but by the time it was over, it had taken 22 uses of Constrict to faint that Pidgey.

http://i.imgur.com/D6MgMZf.png

Not surprisingly, I'm going to hang around Route 1 and maybe Route 2 until Tangela gets up to level 10 and gets Absorb, and even with that, the forest is going to be a bit of a chore. I foresee lots of running away.

Trying to sort out how I'm going to get the rest of the team together. It's going to require lots of trading. If I can catch an Abra on Route 24 or 25, I can trade it for Mr.Mime, but if not (as is likely), I'll have to get it from the Game Corner. And I'll probably have to get Scyther from the Game Corner too, since the only other choice is the Safari Zone. For Jynx, I'll have to wait until I get the Super Rod, then catch a Poliwhirl to trade for it. Seaking (or more accurately Goldeen) is the only one I can catch relatively early, and even that has to wait for the Good Rod. Electabuzz I can catch outright, but not until I get to the Power Plant.

Should be interesting though. Once we get over this first hump of having nothing better than Constrict and get through the forest okay, I figure Tangela should be solid at least through the first two gyms, and that'll put me in Cerulean City with a chance to catch an Abra and at least add Mr. Mime to the team.

I think I'll scale the pics down a bit next time around...

eeveeandmew May 12th, 2014 4:04 PM

ill do this challenge.

Pokemon: Omastar, Aerodactyl, articuno, zapdos, moltres, draganite. (skip snorlax)

This will be great! I can hack in dratini as starter.

Arlo May 13th, 2014 8:20 AM

Update:

Spoiler:
Viridian Forest was the purest hell with a low level Tangela all by itself. I ended up sneaking past most of the trainers and running from everything named Weedle, and slowly chipping away at the things I did fight. And making lots of trips back to the PC.

Brock's gym though, as I suspected, was a breeze - we just demolished the Grounds.

Then it was on to Mt. Moon, which was navigated by the simple expedient of running from Zubats. Many, many zubats.

By the time we got into Cerulean, Tangela was level 20. I debated back and forth, and finally went north first to face my Rival at the foot of Nugget Bridge. His Charmander destroyed Tangela with a couple of Embers, and since those Embers were each taking more than half of Tangela's HP, I figured it wasn't worth trying it again at that point, so I went to Misty's gym instead. And, predictably, Tangela blew through there too. She leveled up to 22 along the way, and I went out and ground a bit to get her to 23, then went back and faced Rival again. It still took three tries, but finally, mostly through successfully Sleep Powdering Charmander, we beat him. Then went over Nugget Bridge and on to Route 25, to hunt for an Abra. It took four tries before we got one Sleep Powdered and caught, but at least we had one. I considered it for a minute, then stuck it in the Day Care to level up while we went off to Vermilion City and the S.S. Anne. Fought all the trainers, with lots of breaks to rest in between. The problem at this point wasn't health - along the way, Tangela leveled up to 31 and picked up Mega Drain, so was overleveled enough to handle most things anyway and was using a health replenishing move at her main attack anyway. The problem was PP - for attacks, she only has Mega Drain and Thief, and each only have 10 PP. The other two moves are Sleep Powder and Poison Powder. Since she's almost always using neutral attacks at best, it takes a while, and a lot of PP. But we got it done, then went off to face Gary, who was just that much more of a hassle, since his Charmander had become a Charmeleon and still has Ember, and Tangela still has crap Special Defense. She was overleveled enough though that it would've taken three Embers to faint her, and she got Charmeleon asleep before that. Then, armed with the Cut HM, it was on to collect my Mr. Mime.

We went back by the Day Care, and swung by the PC and picked up Bulbasaur, who's going to function as an HM slave, probably for most of the game. Then we went through Diglett's Cave and made the trade - my now level 17 Abra for Mimien - the Mr. Mime.

The first thing we did then was to go back through Viridian Forest and the rest of the early routes and fight all the trainers that Tangela had had to sneak past. We eventually made our way back to Vermilion City and challenged Lt. Surge. Mimien had leveled up to the point that he picked up both screens, then Magical Leaf (the latter didn't accomplish anything though, since he's on a team with an overleveled Grass anyway). He handled most of the gym, with Light Screen to soften the Electric attacks and repeated, and often NVE, Confusions. Since we had a few levels on the gym, it wasn't that tough, and whenever he was in a pinch, I'd just switch in Tangela and demolish them with a massively overleveled and usually NVE Mega Drain.

And when it was all over, I checked to make sure that this was a wise decision (and nobody other than Electabuzz can use it anyway, so it was) and put Shock Wave on Mimien in place of Magical Leaf. Then we made our way back up Underground Path and back to Cerulean City, and that's where I'm saved at the moment - at the entrance to Route 9, ready to set off for Rock Tunnel.

And a word of advice to anyone happening by - this is almost certainly what you should do if you're working with a team of late game pokemon. All too much of my game was essentially a solo run with a Tangela, which consisted almost entirely of low level frustration followed by high level boredom, as Tangela was first so obviously without any useful attacks that many battles would've just been suicide, then later so overleveled that she plowed through everything regardless. Neither one is fun. It would've been a lot more fun if I'd just hacked in my entire team at level 5 or whatever, and done it start to finish with them all.

That out of the way, an update:

Spoiler:
LOTS of stuff happening, so just the highlights:

Mimien rebelled by the time we got to Rock Tunnel, and started playing the disgruntled outsider thing. "Mimien turned away." "Mimien disobeyed orders." By the time we got to Lavender Town he was completely useless.

Spent a couple of hours in the Game Corner in Celadon (I had to relearn the tricks to winning at slots) and bought a Scyther, then used it to utterly demolish Erika's gym, which guaranteed obedience from pokemon up to level 50, so level 36 Mimien was useful again. Went down to the Doduo Corral (that's what I call it at least) on Route 16 and got the Fly TM and a Doduo to put it on, and flew to Lavender Town.

Breezed through the tower (avoided a lot of the trainers, since Mimien really didn't need the levels), got the flute, went out to Route 12 and woke that Snorlax first so I could go down and get the Super Rod. Flew to Viridian, caught a Poliwhirl, then to Cerulean and traded for Zynx, then took her back to the tower to fight the rest of the trainers and grind a bit and catch her levels up.

Then lots of back and forth and to and fro, and finally made it to Fuchsia and caught a Seaking, and was almost immediately reminded of why I've never used one in-game for more than a few minutes. Seriously - I'm trying to be generous since I committed to this team, but man... that's a terrible pokemon.

Beat Koga's poison-gym-full-of-psychics, then it was off to Saffron, but only after a quick side trip to the Power Plant to catch an Electabuzz and complete my team. Blew through the Silph offices and demolished Gary (and I have to admit that it was sort of cool to faint his Charizard with my Seaking, even if Seaking had 9 levels on him and it still took three Surfs to do it). Crushed the Fighting Dojo with Scyther, then blasted through Sabrina's gym. Then it was back to Pallet Town and we surfed down to Cinnabar Island, which is where I'm saved right now.

I've been trying to keep everyone pretty close in levels, and at the moment, they range from 43 to 46. And the team again, for anyone who might've made it this far - Tangela, Mr. Mime, Jynx, Scyther, Seaking and Electabuzz.

And it's done.

Spoiler:

http://i.imgur.com/CJ9RolJ.png

Mansion, Blaine's gym (Seaking crushed him, and that's a phrase I would've never thought I'd write), detour to the Sevii Islands, Victory Road and onward.

Lorelei was kind of a hassle - Dewgong, Cloyster and Slowbro all went down to Electabuzz' Thunderbolts, but he didn't quite get Lapras. He took it down a good ways below half while it Surfed him down to about 1/3. I (unwisely) gambled on fainting it even after the Sitrus Berry heal and left it with a sliver and it fainted Electabuzz. Mimien mopped it up though with Shock Wave, then we chipped away at Jynx, in between awakening whoever she put to sleep. Nobody had a really good attack against her, but Scyther was the only one who was weak to her and had to stay out. IIRC, Seaking took her down with a Horn Attack.

Bruno was a breeze. Zynx opened against him and took out his Onyxes, then hit his Hitmonchan down to just a sliver of HP and it fainted her with a Mega Punch. Scyther came in and mopped up.

Agatha was okay. Zynx took out the first Gengar, Arbok and Golbat, but then fell to the second Gengar's Sludge Bomb. I switched in Mimien who took another Sludge Bomb but held on, and countered with a Psychic. I crossed my fingers and set up another Psychic (the first Sludge Bomb had done just about exactly half his HP worth of damage), but Gengar used Shadow Ball instead, for an easy KO. Then I just chipped away at it, Scyther first, then Seaking. Then the Haunter came in and I took the turn to revive Zynx and sacrificed Seaking, then switched Zynx in. Haunter hit with a Hypnosis and I took the next turn to awaken Zynx, expecting it to waste a turn on Dream Eater and instead it Cursed, so Zynx crushed it easily with a Psychic on the next turn.

Lance was mostly easy. Electabuzz took out Gyarados, then Zynx took out the first Dragonair and put a dent in the second one, and Seaking (who has Ice Beam) finished it off. Then Seaking went down surprisingly easily to an Aerodactyl Ancient Power (granted she was at only a bit more than half HP). I switched in Electabuzz and got off one Thunderbolt while it took an Ancient Power that knocked it down to about 1/3. I debated a bit and Max Revived Seaking and sacrificed Electabuzz, then Seaking Surfed the Aerodactyl away. Then Dragonite. Seaking hit it with an Ice Beam, but only knocked it down by about a third, while taking over half to an Outrage. I Max Revived Zynx and sacrificed Seaking, then Zynx one-shotted the Dragonite on the next turn.

And Gary. Pidgey went down to Electabuzz, then Tangela tanked an Earthquake and took out Rhydon with a Giga Drain, then Charizard came in and I switched in Seaking and they went at it. Fire Blast took about 1/3 from Seaking, while Surf took almost half from Charizard, so it was just a matter of holding out long enough. Then Exeggutor came in and Scyther crushed it. Then it was Alakazam. Pretty much everyone ended up involved in that fight, and it looked bleak until Mimien got up a Light Screen, then it turned finally. I deliberately brought Electabuzz in to deliver the final blow, and then he one-shotted Gyarados for the victory.

And with that - how could I pass up the next one? The only problem is that I feel a bit guilty about using such an awesome team, though after my last team, it'll be a welcome relief.

Congrats Arlo and have fun with your next journey

My progress:
Spoiler:

Picked Magby as starter, Rival took Elekid
Noticed a huge problem: Electabuzz was pushed in Fire Red Omega, and half of my future team is part water type...
Did all the tutoring stuff
Caught a Staryu at Pallet Town (Old Rod)
Defeated Rival again (Magby and Elekid are real rivals, I think I will let them 2 face in every battle for now on)
Went through Viridian Forest (Magby and Staryu are amazing)
Lost against Brock (he has 6 Pokemon in Fire Red Omega and they are higher leveld than mine, also I can't hit Omanyte and Kabuto with a super effective hit (except Karate Chop from Magby) and they can 2HKO my Pokemon with Rock Tomb)
Obtained Treecko as a help for the gym
Defeated Brock now with ease
Defeated all the trainers on the next routes
Obtained Magikarp
Saved at Mt.Moon

Finished the last remaining Challenge for Gen 1!

Spoiler:

-Traded my old pal /vp/ the Vaporeon from a previous Crystal save; from the Persona Challenge to be exact. It defeated Brock, though difficult to obey me.

-Traded for ESPEON (a joke obviously) the Jolteon from my Blue Baton Pass Challenge, which I taught Thunderbolt to easily crush Misty.

-Traded for /out/ the Tauros, oddly enough on the same save file as Vaporeon. It Thrashed Lt. Surge.

-The in-game Eevee became a Flareon, which I nicknamed NO MOVES because of its terrible movepool. However it had Ember, which was all I needed to beat Erika.

-I taught Earthquake to Tauros who now obeys me due to the Rainbowbadge. It EQ'd all of them for an easy win.

-Used Vaporeon to knock out Blaine with Surf.

-Sabrina was defeated with Porygon, the only action it saw all game. It's only Lv.60 because I traded for it.

-Vaporeon finished Giovanni with Surf and Toxic, making it one of the best tanks I could possibly have. Tauros did some fighting as well, but I taught it Fissure at the battle's conclusion to clear up the Elite Four.

-Defeated the Rival easily, which goes to show how simple this playthrough was.

-Jolteon took care of Lorelei with Thunderbolt and Toxic. As Toxic is one of my favorite strategies to win, I duplicated it with the Missingno Glitch. Don't be alarmed! No Rare Candies were duplicated.

-Bruno: I gave Tauros an X Accuracy and it plowed through him with Fissure.

-Agatha: Tauros Earthquaked the Gengars after an X Speed. Silly me, forgetting to grab Ethers in the game. Oh, and Thrash to Golbat.

-Lance: Jolteon TBolted Gyarados, then I swapped to Vaporeon to ToxicStall and Ice Beam everything else.

CHAMPION RIVAL
I've made my update brief because I know people aren't fans of walls of text, wanted to get to the point. Back to the update:

Jolteon > Pidgeot, Gyarados, Blastoise
Flareon > Exeggutor
Tauros > Alakazam
Vaporeon > Rhydon, Arcanine.

That's a wrap!

Oh I haven't seen this coming:
Pichu, Cleffa,... are not fuly evolved in their generation, so their evolution do not count (f.e. Golbat is in Gen 1 fully evolved, Pichu can evolve in Gen 2, so it does not count for Gen 2)

An update:

Spoiler:
Haven't gotten as much time to play lately as I'd prefer, but...

Picked Chikorita as my starter so Silver got Cyndaquil to match his hair.

Did the early running around, then caught two lvl 4 Caterpies on Route 31. Hacked one into a Cyndquil and the other into a Totodile, and on we went. Got the egg and cloned it and hacked the clone into a Munchlax, so I had two eggs. Kept the original in the party to hatch and put the Munchlax in the PC for the time being.

Got to Azalea Town and caught a lvl 8 Slowpoke and hacked it into a Mewtwo. Hatched the egg and took it back to show it to Professor Elm, then picked up the Munchlax egg from the PC and went back to Azalea Town. Debated a bit and parked the Togepi in the PC and hacked in a lvl 1 Mew to serve as HM slave instead.

Munchlax hatched just short of Goldenrod, so my party was complete.

Currently saved just south of Ecruteak - took out the Sudowoodo, but haven't gone up the route yet.

Current party:

Bayleef, lvl 21
Croconaw, lvl 20
Quilava, lvl 22
Mewtwo, lvl 15
Munchlax, lvl 11
Mew, HM slave, lvl 1

Umm you are wrong the last remaining challenge for gen 1 is with me and I am going to finish it but I keep getting swampt with projects and tests from school and that has priority over pokemon... so I guess I need to make an update. I not making walls of text anymore because I don't have the time so just screenies of boss/rival battles from now on. One question since I'm playing Heart Gold do I have to finish Kanto to?

Boss/Rival Battles:

Matzeho1996 May 18th, 2014 8:50 AM

Buizel yes you can skip 1

HeatedFennekin, yes you have to do Kanto too

I did not have time for my challenge the last days, I hope I can go on the next days

CelticsPhan May 20th, 2014 2:08 PM

FINISHED the first (if I'm not mistaken) Johto Dex 719 Challenge on Silver!
Spoiler:

-Caught my Sentret right off the bat
-Traded for Spinarak from Crystal, as I learned that Silver does not have Spinarak.
-Got my Mew from Red, though it makes sense because it was fresh from the Mew Glitch at Lv.7.

-Grinded Sentret all the way to Furret before fighting Falkner, which was a great decision.

FALKNER
Furret just Tackled for the win. Easy!

BUGSY
Ditto with Sentret. Spinarak evolved into Ariados!

WHITNEY
Ariados got a Poison on Clefairy and her terrible Miltank, which made things much easier. Rollout would've decimated my team, but it missed four times in a row!

MORTY
Furret knew Mud Slap, and his Gohost wouldn't stop suiciding with Curse. Not a problem!

CHUCK
I had left Hoothoot/Noctowl alone for the most part until this Gym battle, where Confusion and Peck stomped his Primeape and Poliwrath.

JASMINE
I stupidly got rid of Mud Slap on Furret, so I had to use Mew. Not a bad alternative because it knew Bubblebeam.

PRYCE
At this point, I traded for Lanturn and Crobat, each in the Lv.40 range. Lanturn was perfect for this Gym; Sparking the Ice/Waters and Surfing on Piloswine.

CLAIR
Mew knew Ice Beam which allowed me to tear her apart. Kingdra was tough, but I got some lucky criticals there.

On to the E4...

WILL
A combo of Furret (with Shadow Ball) and Mew (Ice Beam/TBolt)

KOGA
Oddly enough, my Ariados went well with this fight. I was without any Fire moves the entire game, so I relied on Ariados to Night Shade the Steel and other tricky types. Without Night Shade, Ariados would be without any reason to use in a playthrough.

BRUNO
Mew and Lanturn took control this fight. Mew learned Psychic, and if you know anything about Pokemon, this hits pretty hard.

KAREN
Ariados with Night Shade and... Leech Life! Umbreon was poisoned from Poison Sting, and I was amped. After Umbreon, she was nothing special.

LANCE
Cue overrated theme...okay. Even though I had Mew, the rest of my team was considerably strong. I don't want to spoil the ending, but this team beat Red while at Lv.60 because it worked so well with certain strategies.

Back to the battle. Gyarados went down after a single Spark from Lanturn.
The Dragonites fell after a single Ice Beam each by Mew. Good thing I picked up the Nevermeltice.
Aerodactyl was tough because of its Speed, but after a couple Revives, the entire team defeated it. Charizard was Charizard; only a Surf from Laturn was needed.

Cue the based credits!!! Time for gorgeous Kanto music!

SURGE
Mew's versatility got me through the game pretty easily. Earthquake dropped all of his Pokes in a single hit.

SABRINA
I went with Furret, who knew Amnesia (OK?) and Shadow Ball, which were perfect. I didn't really need any others.

ERIKA
Noctowl shined in this fight, Confusion and Fly did the job.

JANINE
I used Mew, but Crobat saw its first real action of the game.

MISTY
A few Lanturn Sparks and Mew Thunderbolts and Misty was bye-bye-a-go-go.

BROCK
Lanturn and Mew again, but Brock was so easy that I didn't need anyone else.

BLAINE
One of the easiest Leaders in all of Pokemon, even in GSC. Surfing with Lanturn.

BLUE
An uphill battle due to being underleveled, but I won thanks to Full Restores and Revives.
I was thankful for being allowed to use Mew here.

RED
Almost time for the end!
Mew Earthquaked Pikachu once after a lucky Charm missed.
Espeon was equally as lucky, Earthquake critical'd and my favorite Pokemon fell in two hits.

Out comes Snorlax. My solution was the classic ToxicStall tactic, hoping Red didn't Full Restore or have it use Rest.

Red didn't heal ONCE this whole fight. It could not have gone better. After Snorlax, I Toxicstalled Blastoise then Charizard. Venusaur was a but tougher due to an immunity to Toxic, but I had Mew and Crobat.

Crobat stalled like heck with Bite and Confuse Ray, and to my surprise, Venusaur was dead. GG Red! I like Cynthia better!

SCREENSHOT OF FINAL TEAM:

I was glad I didn't have to use ****mons for this Challenge, and that was why I finished pretty quickly. I love Gen 2 even more than Gen 1, and having finished that game many times since joining these Forums, I get it done.

I slept on Furret, having moves like Amnesia and Shadow Ball made it surprisingly useful. Ariados is great because of Night Shade, and Noctowl has decent bulk for such an easily accessible Pokemon. Mew needs no explanation, that movepool and those 100-100-100-100-100-100 base stats make it able to do anything and learn any move.

Crobat is the king of messing with other Pokemon, using annoying moves such as Bite, Toxic and Confuse Ray to kill you. If the AI had human emotion, it would hate seeing Crobat, just as I hate seeing it in UU and in the Battle Frontier.

Oh, and Lanturn. Staple of my Base-Stat-Total Challenge in HeartGold because of a great typing (any familiar with Rotom-W???) and good bulk/Sp. Attack.

Arlo May 20th, 2014 3:42 PM

Oog. You have to do Kanto too.

You know - no offense, but I REALLY hate challenges with arbitrary additional requirements on some gens. It just makes no sense at all that I play through eight gym leaders, the E4 and the Champion (or whoever's there at the end), then the credits roll and the game even ends up at a screen that says "The End," and... sometimes that's the end of the challenge and sometimes it's not.

Eh... whatever. I do vaguely remember reading that before I did my first challenge - I had just forgotten it by the time I picked up this one. So I guess this is just an update instead of completion.

Spoiler:
http://i.imgur.com/K075Zoi.png

Nothing really eventful along the way to the E4.

Spent a while in the Game Corner (I sort of like Voltorb Flip - it's basically impossible to not win, so long as you're careful - it just takes a while) and got the Thunderbolt and Ice Beam TMs and put them both on Mewtwo, along with its natural Confusion and, after I won it, Shadow Ball. Bought Focus Blast at the Department Store for Typhlosion, and put Earthquake, when I finally got it, on Snorlax. Other than that, they had whatever natural moves were best at the time.

Did all the required stuff, including catching Ho-oh (I ended up deciding to play HG instead of SS). I didn't bother chasing the dogs, but threw Quick Balls at them whenever they showed up, and actually caught Raikou that way.

Spent some time grinding after getting to Indigo Plateau to catch everyone up to the highest level at the time, which was Feraligatr at 42, then we went in.

Will - Feraligatr took out the first Xatu and Jynx, then Meganium took out Slowbro. Then Typhlosion came in and crushed Exeggutor and beat the other Xatu.

Koga - Typhlosion one-shotted Ariados and Forretress, then Snorlax came in and Earthquaked Muk (took a while though, between Minimize misses, Black Sludge healing and a Full Restore from Koga). Left Snorlax in against Crobat and Body Slammed it into paralysis, then switched in Mewtwo to take it, then Venomoth, out.

Bruno - Mewtwo swept him. With Confusion.

Karen - Typhlosion took out Umbreon with a couple of Focus Blasts. Gengar came in and I switched to Feraligatr, who tanked its Focus Blasts and took it out with Crunch. Then Vileplume, which really sort of sucked, since I wanted to leave Feraligatr in there to face Houndoom. Switched back to Typhlosion who easily tanked Petal Dance and took out Vileplume, then hit Houndoom with a Focus Blast for about 2/3 of its HP, while losing about 2/3 of its own to Dark Pulse. I switched in Feraligatr while Karen Full Restored Houndoom. Feraligatr hung on with a sliver of red after another Dark Pulse and hit back with a 1HKO Waterfall. Then Snorlax came in and just Body Slammed Murkrow.

Lance - Mewtwo one-shotted Gyarados with a Thunderbolt. Aerodactyl came in next, who was faster than Mewtwo and hit hard with a Crunch and didn't quite go down to another Thunderbolt. I switched in Feraligatr while Lance restored Aerodactyl, then the race was on. Waterfall did just a bit more damage than anything Aerodactyl could do and I had more Full Restores, so we eventually won. Then he brought in Charizard. With my Feraligatr already sitting there. So we one-shotted it. Then it was the Dragonites. Feraligatr was low on HP and Mewtwo was still wounded from Aerodactyl's Crunch (and nobody else could do much of anything against them), so I switched in Snorlax and healed them while the first Dragonite chipped away at it, then the two of them just sort of tag-teamed their way through the Dragonites.

And that was that. Or so I thought.

Off to Kanto I guess...

It's been two weeks since I signed up for my Crystal Challenge, and now it is finished with Piloswine, Ursaring, Magcargo, Delibird, Sneasel, and Octillery.

Spoiler:

-Traded my whole team from other games. In hindsight, I should have chosen Gold, but it's whatever.

FALKNER
-My Teddiursa mopped him up with Scratch.

BUGSY
Slugma used Ember!

WHITNEY
I got Slugma to Poison with Smog, then I tanked the Miltank Rollouts.

MORTY
My now Ursaring used Lick and Faint Attack to defeat him.

CHUCK
Octillery knew Psybeam, so he wasn't any trouble.

JASMINE
Octillery again, but Magcargo took the Magnemites out.

PRYCE
Ursaring with some help from Magcargo.

CLAIR
Delibird (Icy Wind) along with Ursaring (Ice Punch).

WILL
Went with Ursaring and Faint Attack.

KOGA
Magcargo silenced his Bugs.

KAREN
Piloswine took care of Umbren, and the rest of her team was easy. I was pretty ahead of the level curve because of the boosted EXP from trades.

LANCE
I put Ice Punch and Icy Wind on everything that could learn it, and this helped me defeat those Dragonites. Octillery did some work with its Special attacks.

ON TO KANTO

SURGE
Ursaring knew Earthquake, no big deal.

JANINE
Ditto!

ERIKA
Delibird and Magcargo, pretty self-explanitory.

SABRINA
I went head-on with Sneasel. Her Psychic attackers couldn't touch me.

MISTY
A mix of Ursaring and Sneasel. No strategy, just attacking.

BROCK
Octillery blew him away.

BLAINE
Oftillery again!

BLUE
The whole team was used in this fight. I cloned the TM06 Toxic to allow my team to defeat Blue effectively. I did not fight many Trainers in Kanto, but I did not need to because of my ToxicStall strategy.

RED
Piloswine >Pikachu
Sneasel >Espeon
Octillery with Toxic > Blastoise, Snorlax
Magcargo > Venusaur
Magcargo with Rock Slide > Charizard, the Rock Legend

Pretty cool, one of the better teams I've run with in a while.

FINAL SCREENSHOT

Imperator161 June 14th, 2014 10:56 PM

I just finished my challenge. Kanto was a breeze, as usual. I wasn't that high-leveled when I reached Red, but managed to take him out in the end. His Snorlax didn't want to go down, but Misdreavus finally took it out with Perish Song.

The team:
-Slowking level 62
-Misdreavus level 48
-Umbreon level 50
-Murkrow level 42
-Espeon level 61
-Jumpluff level 50
