Is OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire a Good Fit for the Pokemon Franchise?

Do you think the new games coming up will "flow" with the rest of the pokemon franchise? Is it a good addition? How will it affect the franchise as a whole? Do you think a Hoenn remake was needed, or is just an extra game to make money? Do you think the new games will revolutionize pokemon in a way never expected? Discuss!

*Sorry if this is in the wrong section. I thought it fit best here because it includes theories and all of pokemon as a whole, not just specifically ORAS.

Eevee May 8th, 2014 6:21 AM

I definitely think it was needed. Sure some may consider it a money grab but isn't that what all games are? Ways to make money..?

Overtime, newer and newer systems get released. Then the old ones get older and soon they either break, get lost or no one uses them anymore. Then what happens to the older games? In a franchise like Pokemon, each generation is important to keep alive. I think remaking the games in the updated version of graphics and such is a great idea. It's like a nod of thanks to us fans.

I'm curious to see what type of cool features they'll implement into these games and perhaps transfer over to games in the future.

Altairis May 8th, 2014 6:30 AM

It is always partly a money-grab (I mean, we are all already planning to buy one or two and it's still months away!) but I also think that they were necessary. Most parents nowadays are buying their kids a 3DS instead of a DS, meaning that those kids won't have access to RSE and old GBA games (rightfully so, these games are old!). RSE is an entire region and adventure and I didn't see them neglecting to give people access to the games. :)

Sceptile14 May 8th, 2014 6:47 AM

No game is really needed... They are all money grabs really. In all seriousness though, they should be great additions to the series.

wakachamo May 8th, 2014 6:57 AM

What counts as a 'necessary' fit for the franchise? These are videogames aimed at kids lol ): In the end there's no particular relevance for any of this

Technically speaking, there was no need to remake Ruby, Sapphire, and Emerald because one can still play those games and transfer Pokemon from those games to X and Y. Granted, the process would be laborious, but it is still possible. Also, I think to an extent this is a ploy by Game Freak and Nintendo to make some money. Obviously, there is a nostalgia aspect at work: kids who grew up starting on Generation 3 are at the age where nostalgia sets in and they may want to enjoy those games again but in updated format.

Still, I think this was a good decision. First, it allows for greater compatibility and less laboriousness in transferring Pokemon. Second, it allows a whole new generation of Pokemon players to enjoy the world of Hoenn. Third, for me, Hoenn was always inferior to Kanto, Johto, Sinnoh, Unova, and now Kalos. I never liked it very much. But with a fresh iteration of this classic, I am very excited to play it, experience it afresh, develop a new opinion, and enjoy the awesome opportunities this remake could afford.

Meksal May 8th, 2014 3:52 PM

I honestly cannot give a solid opinion until I play the game.

MarioManH May 8th, 2014 3:53 PM

Yes, it needed to happen. My life would be utterly incomplete without it.

What if the game sucks though? What if the nostalgia blows up in your face? It could be a complete fail. Not judging until it's out :)

I'm already too hyped, I will only expect sheer joy from the game.

All aboard the Hype Train x)

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire May 8th, 2014 5:57 PM

I think that they'll flow as well as Firered and Leafgreen and Heartgold and Soulsilver did.

Chibi-chan May 8th, 2014 6:01 PM

Yes, this was a must need.
I've been playing the games since they first game out, but the leap from GBC to GBA was so dramatic that the RSE games and all of its capabilities simply blew my mind back then. I'm bias, because I am a major major major Hoenn fanatic, but if this game had not been announced, I'd still be sacrificing Hoenn plushies and creating pentagrams out of Hoenn merchandise for it's arrival.

Basically it's necessary because it brings me back into Pokemon.

Elaitenstile May 8th, 2014 8:14 PM

The huge fanbase probably has more nostalgia to RSE than even perhaps RBGY. Even though Red may be the most popular game, many people miss Hoenn more because they really loved all the new features added, and those features were developed more and there wasn't a game after where they could enjoy the same feel of the games. So definitely going to be at least 65% as successful as X&Y.

Mithel_Celestia May 8th, 2014 9:16 PM

I'm not sure how the games will fit into the chronology of Pokemon. Letting Kanto, Hoenn and Kalos happen at the same time is pretty F****d up. (sorry for my obscene language) People have stated it will be a direct remake and so that means the story is still the same as back in RSE and that means that Kanto's story will also be happening ?_? My mind is banged up right now.

Salzorrah May 9th, 2014 1:36 AM

I'm pretty sure Pokemon fans wanted a Hoenn Remake since Gen 5 so it was a step in the right direction for GF.

Rivvon May 9th, 2014 2:07 AM

I can't say anything for sure until the games are released, but in general the remakes do not offer anything "new" or "revolutionary;" that is left to the "new" titles of the generation. But what remakes do offer is a lot of content--enough so that even if we have to wait until 2016 for the next games we will be satisfied.

I do think these are a good "fit" for the franchise. Some people may claim that they are unnecessary because you can still transfer your Pokémon from the original games into XY, but you'd need a DS or DS Lite specifically (DSi and onwards would not work)--and you can only transfer 6 Pokémon a day from gen 3 to gen 4. And in reality, it's not at all about Pokémon availability.

There are people who started playing Pokémon with gen 4, gen 5, and now with gen 6. That's just what happens when you have such a far-reaching demographic. Gen 4 and 5 games can still be played on a 3DS, but gen 3 games are much more difficult to find, and can only be played on very old (technology-years-wise) systems. These remakes will open the opportunity to visit Hoenn to all the new fans, and all the old fans who may have had to miss out on it. And all the old fans who want to return there.

With a franchise like Pokémon, the only things truly "necessary" are systems and mechanics. Individual games could be anything, set anywhere, with any characters, and any Pokémon. But Hoenn (all regions, actually) holds a special place in many peoples' hearts, and while specifically remakes of RSE might not be "necessary," they're still more than welcome.

Yes, this being posted shortly after Nintendo announcing a financial loss. These games will easily accumulate 10 million sales in no time, have you seen the audience that was asking for remakes? These could even outsell X and Y.

I think they're reeling in Pokémon fans into buying the 3DS with these tempting remakes. After X&Y and ORAS, I'm pretty sure a large chunk of the fans would be having a 3DS. Then they could get better sales in the upcoming spinoffs, Pokémon Z and perhaps be armed for the next generation.

Pepperton May 13th, 2014 6:13 PM

A great fit. It seems the entire pokemon fanbase was pushing for these to become a reality, meaning that sales will be off the charts. It's on schedule and fits with the previous trend of remakes. It's too early to say how exactly the gameplay will fit in with the rest of the franchise, but it's a smart and logical move to develop these remakes.

LavenderTownGhost May 13th, 2014 6:20 PM

Absolutely! I do not just say that as a Hoenn fan, I say that as a Pokemon fan on a whole. It's a terrific way to keep the newer fans, as it may be a region they haven't gotten to play through yet, while maintaining the older fans and fans of generation III. I think they will fit in beautifully.

"HoneyClaws" May 13th, 2014 6:32 PM

I don't see why not. There were a lot of reasons why it was necessary. For one, there were a lot of people I can refer to who haven't ever played it because they started on the DS, the games then were incredibly scarce in stores after late Gen 4 and the ones that still exist have that dry battery that just messes you up.

Transfering now from Gen 3 is too demanding and time consuming.

Then there are the overwhelming technical additions that Pokemon has had overhauled since that would be extremely interesting to see incorperated now in modernization. In away these remakes can be entirely new games themselves just with the added new features and gameplay tweaks alone. Hopefully if done right the Gen 3 haters wont have a word to say.

Peter Quill May 13th, 2014 6:35 PM

I really like how they handled the remakes for RBGY and GSC. I think it'll be a good addition, and I hope they handle it well. I am not a huge fan of the Hoenn region (I liked Sinnoh the most out of all the regions so far), but the game is really memorable for me. I also like the weather trio, so I hope they delve in that further. I also hope to see some features return (like the contests ; A;). But for now, I'd like to see some more info D:
