Console purchase justification
Gen 3 was my favourite... Gen two was the hook & line, three was the sinker. I played the ever-loving crap out of those games. I bought a DS to play Diamond, which I ran through in probably about 4 days. Unfortunately D/P, B&W/2 never could live up to the GBA generation... I swore Black 2 would be my final Pokemon handheld gaming purchase after never making an effort to get the second badge. Didn't help that I had to force myself to play Black in order to get my money's worth, so Black 2 was not bound to be fun.
BUT A GENERATION 3 REMAKE?! Oh God.... my rules are being tested. Anyone else considering buying a 3DS XL/3DS/2DS for these games? I need some real convincing. I've seen some tech specs and 2DS seems like the absolute most garbage of a purchase. Maybe those of you with the consoles (2DS included) can chime in on how you like them? I want to buy the games...really I do want to give Nintendo more of my money, they deserve it. But I need some real convincing that dropping $250 is worth the Gen 3 remakes and the console I'll be getting. Maybe upwards of $250, cause you know I'm buying the OR/AS special edition consoles. |
I have a 3DS already but I have to say, it was bought specifically for Pokémon. I hated BW and never did BW2 but XY pulled me back in and If I hadn't bought one for XY I would have certainly bought it for ORAS because Hoenn is life and love and my all-time favourite. idk. I think it's certainly worth dropping money on a console for Pokémon. Mainly because Pokémon is my favourite ever but also then you have it for lovely fun things like the new SSB, ACNL, Dual Destinies, Layton vs AA, Tomodachi Life, Bravely Default, all the downloadable titles... idk it's got a good range of games imo (even though I don't play games much). And it runs pretty nicely? I'm not useful at all for comparisons but. Yeah. I'd do it in a heartbeat.
|
If not for ORAS, do it for Fire Emblem Awakening, Legend of Zelda A Link Between Worlds, Animal Crossing New Leaf, Bravely Default, Monster Hunter, Kid Icarus Uprising...the list goes on.
I seriously don't understand people that say the 3DS is lacking in good games. :/ |
Just get a 3DS. Completely worth it IMO. Animal Crossing, Mario Kart 8, and Ocarina of Time 3D are all absolutely stellar. If you're into JRPGs, Tales of the Abyss is also a great timesuck if you haven't played it yet.
Should be more than enough to prepare you for when OR/AS come out :p Edit: I JUST REALISED WHO OP IS WTF MARZ WHERE YOU BEEN :'[[[[[[[ |
While generation V was hard to get over (it's a good thing it was short) Gen VI is so much better. XY rank with Gen IV in my book...maybe after the remakes equal to beyond Gen III. So don't look back at Gen V and jump into Gen VI. The system has plenty of interesting games if you're into rpgs (like I am).

I bought a 2DS specifically for Pokemon Y. The 2DS is ugly but it actually is much more comfortable when holding it than I thought it'd be, and it gets the job done. But, I'm soon giving my little brother my 2DS and buying a 3DS XL for Hoenn.
|
Just get one! Mine was bought for Animal Crossing but I also bought it knowing that the next gen (X&Y) was imminent and would be 3DS exclusive.
|
I got mine because there was a Pikachu edition, and I somehow convinced mom to get it solely because of that reason alone :p
I'm dead serious, that's how it actually happened. But that wasn't my only reason to want one in the first place. I knew the new Pokemon games would come out on them within a year or so of my purchasing it. That, and I had a feeling the Hoenn Remakes would come to fruition in glorious 3ds. See, Sapphire was my first game. As for other games... I haven't actually played many on it yet, too busy with other things, but I'm sure looking forward to playing quite a few games when I have the chance: Luigi's Mansion Dark Moon, Kingdom Hearts DreamDropDistance (KH is amazing by the way, definitely get it if you're a fan of RPGs and Disney movies), LoZ: A Link Between Worlds....... ect. I did play quite a bit of Prof Layton and the Miracle Mask and it was pretty fun. |

No but I already bought my 3DS back in 2011 but if at this time I didn't own one, after this announcement I would be 100% sold and would be buying one at the next opportunity available. Pokemon X and Y (and Animal Crossing NL) are already awesome, which would also sell me for purchasing a 3DS, but an RS Remake is the #1 game of any that would convince me to buy a 3DS. Its your choice but I'd say go for it, you'll be missing out! Not to mention that the 3DS has a flourishing library of games that keeps on expanding. ;-; If you're still not fully convinced, why not wait a couple of months to see how these games pan out. If you're not a fan of Hoenn in 3D and don't think you'd enjoy playing these games then you'll have your answer, but I'm positive that games are shaping up to be even better than Pokemon X and Y.. which is quite something. Also it might be worth mentioning that we could be getting some sort of bundle deal similar to X and Y in which you can buy a special 3DS with the games pre-installed. Bottom line is we've still got six months to make decisions like these, so I'd just hang tight and wait to see how these games turn out. :) |
I had a 3ds long before X/Y, so i'm all set :)
|
I got a 3DS for Pokemon X/Y specifically and as cheap as possible. It was a HUGE update from using a DS Phat for 8 years, oh boy.
I bought it refurbished/used from Nintendo's online store. Sometimes they have different colors, like aqua blue (mine), pink, red, purple. Currently, they only have the red one for $110. I don't really care for the XL, and the 2DS looks awkward to hold. If you have the money though, go for it, or wait for the pre-release reviews.. I've given Nintendo enough money! :P |
If Gen3 was your favorite.....yes. Why?
Point 1: You are obligated to buy this. This is your favorite gen. You're creating a thread about this. You must really want this. Point 2: You've been waiting upward of ten years for this. Imagine an investment of $20 a year for the release of a new game. $20 over a 10 year span to fund a 3DS and the game makes it sound much more plausible! ^O^ Point 3: Have you ever skipped out on a game? Two games? If so, think of that as money saved in order to get this game. Point 4: You'll regret not reliving your favorite generation while everyone else does. The nostalgia will be intense, and there you will be, missing out on this. Point 5: By giving Nintendo your money, that truly shows them how much you loved the game. If people had thooooought about buying B/W, would B/W2 have come out? No. Your action is needed to show Gamefreak that yes, PEOPLE LOVED GEN3 AND THEY DIDN'T JUST TALK ABOUT IT! Imagine....if everyone payed $250 and bought a 3DS just for Gen 3.....maybe they'll put Steven Stone in even more games....heueheeh So, THOSE ARE FIVE POINTS. YOU SHOULD GET A 3DS. If you're still unconvinced, trust me, I can make up more. Hell, give me a few minutes and I can convince you on why you should buy both before any new features are even released. |
Do you think you'll play other games on it besides these? Since you didn't buy money for a 3DS for XY, I'm not sure how important other games are to you. But I think that you should definitely consider getting one! There are really a lot of great games on the 3DS that you will get access to by buying one. Fire Emblem Awakening, Zelda Ocarina of Time 3D, Zelda A Link to the Past, Kid Icarus Uprising, Bravely Default, Pokemon XY, Pokemon ORAS, etc. Plus, they aren't going backwards anymore. There are only going to be 3DS games from now on, so I say go for it.
|
If you can spare the money to do it, I say go for it! I always try to keep up to date with the nintendo handhelds mainly because I don't want to miss any Pokemon games. Luckily for me, my dad doesn't think I am too old for Christmas presents and I usually upgrade around Christmas time, even if a Pokemon game isn't out yet. You will just be so sad if you miss out on these if gen 3 was your favorite, imagine how pretty it is going to look! Plus if you like other video games besides pokemon, you are BOUND to find at least a few other games you like for the 3ds! I'm not a huge game player and even I found other games for it that I love! No guilty feelings, if you can do it, just do it!! :D
Plus, I bet you'll like X/Y! And there are bound to be other new pokemon games after ORAS that you might like as well! |
The 3DS has a plethora of new games so I'd recommend buying it OR/AS aside.. though if I didn't have one I'd certainly have purchased upon hearing this news. ;P I say get one - it's more than worth it even if it's just the remakes that catch your eye right now. You don't even need an XL (or can nab a 2DS rather than the more expensive XL)!

Thank you for the replies everyone! So great to hear everyone's take on this.

In the end it will be my decision whether or not to make the purchase and I think that will only truly be made after the games are released and I can watch some gameplay. They would need some remake-only features that go beyond aesthetic for me to want to drop so much money for them. |
It's going to make a huge crater in your wallet, that's for sure. I just hope you'll play Animal Crossing, Fire Emblem and LoZ games as well because a 3DS is a serious console as well. XY is the main benefit; and so will be Z when it is released. If you think you can afford other games to play after buying it, go for it, and perhaps relive the old games in ROMs from time to time.

The battery life is better in the XL which is what I like. XD
I have a pink 3DS XL and I bought mine for Animal Crossing. There are a bunch of nice games for the system now. You'll end up having a hard time trying to pick which games to buy first. XD It's a nice system but for the 3D you have to hold it at a steady angle which can be annoying. But the 3D is good. I don't usually play with it on though except in Mario 3D World because there were special things that you could see better with it on. |
Really if you want a handheld to solely play Pokémon, then I would consider purchasing a Nintendo 2DS. That way instead of spending $250 for both the handled and the game, you'll only be spending $150. That's $100 less just for a game. However, there are a lot more great games on the Nintendo 3DS which should be played. Some of my favorite are Mario Kart 7, Fire Emblem: Awakening, Bravely Default, Mario & Luigi: Dream Team, Animal Crossing: New Leaf. Personally, I bought my 3DS for a plethora of games in general, and I was ecstatic to find out Pokémon games were coming to it.

If you want to play 3DS games but want less, then go for the 2DS. All you are missing on is the 3D switch and the "portable" swing handheld thingamabobber. That's not too much I guess.

Really depends, the 2DS really isn't that bad. If you only plan on getting Pokemon and maybe a few other games for it then I'd say go with the 2DS, but there are so many games for the 3DS it really depends. I don't know what games you're into but I guess you should google 3DS games and see if any take your fancy - Zelda, Pokemon, Animal Crossing, Luigi's Mansion, Monster Hunter, soon Tomodachi Life, and SSB4 if you don't have a WiiU are all really good games for the 3DS, there are probably a few more that I'm forgetting. But totally up to you.
TL;DR - if you're only going to get one solely for ORAS, then get a 2DS - if you think you're going to get a little more invested then go for the XL |
I specifically wanted a 3DS for Pokemon XY - didn't matter if it was XL or not
The month I was going to start saving, my grandma got me one as a late birthday present (my birthday is on Dec 13 - I was going to start saving $50 starting March 2013 - but my grandma got me the 3DS XL on Feb 22nd 2013) and a way of saying "thanks for all the hard work you have done without complaining". |
I bought a 3DS with the promise of good games. Monster Hunter especially.
I hated Gen 5 in general... Luckily X and Y were good. |
I bought a 3DS almost entirely for X and Y. I have a few other games now, but the main reason was to play through Kalos. If I didn't do that, though, I'd certainly buy one for ORAS. Hoenn is my favorite region, and I doubt they'll disappoint on any front, so yes, I think it justifies purchasing the console. It's not like all of the other 3D games are terrible, either. Most of them are pretty decent, actually. As far as the 2DS goes, I honestly don't think it's worth the money that you'll be saving. :c
