My thoughts on the mega starters:
Sceptile- good ability, awesome design
Swampert- awesome abitity, awesome design(this is how I imagined mega swampert would look :p

The new designs for Team Aqua, not so much Team Magma(they give me Team Flare vibes and I despised Team Flare, just not Lysandre, maybe its the red and Maxie), llloooks soo freaking awesome that I want go to GF amd give there design team a big hug.

Steven, in my theory, will either have a Charizard X as tutorial purposes, OR, you can battle him postgame, and he will have a Charizard X.

antemortem June 8th, 2014 7:20 AM

Hoping for HUGE Defense and Attack buff on Mega Swampert for competitive purposes. It's already got monster defense, and I doubt Special Defense or Speed would get a boost, given its shape and size. As for Mega Sceptile... anything will be amazing since it's already really fast and decent offensively.

btw can I just say that Matt and Tabitha are pretty whack looking? I loved Tabitha before but he was kind of screwed up for me. :(

OmegaRuby and AlphaSapphire June 8th, 2014 7:32 AM

I think they'll boost it's speed by at least 10. It's special defense will probably go up by the 20, and 10 to special attack, 30 will be given to attack, and the other 40 to defense.

Altairis June 8th, 2014 8:26 AM

I hope they leave Swampert's speed untouched, simply because its only boosting move is Curse so if they boost its speed it would have to sacrifice boosting unless it gets some great Attack. :3

But Curse makes it slower, not faster. Also one could still use Curse if the want to, don't see how it'll sacrifice boosting...

She is saying, It would be a waste of points if they raise his speed by 50 and give him Swift Swim, when Curse is his only boosting move.

Rivvon June 8th, 2014 9:08 AM

The whole idea of Swift Swim kind of ruins the "sacrifice speed for strength" idea, which I think is a shame. I think giving a boost to Speed when it Mega Evolves would be a waste, but again it's kind of necessary to even make Swift Swim worthwhile. I also kind of hope they focus on its physical attack and not special...I don't want what happened to Mega Gardevoir to happen to Mega Swampert, especially since it's already fairly iffy as it is.

In that case it'll be better if it were like MegaAlakazam but Attack being boosted instead of Special Attack, and 100 bs points in total being added to it's BST instead of the 90 MegaAlakazam got.

DJTiki June 8th, 2014 9:21 AM

In that case, Mega Swamperts wont be carrying curse. And we will probably only see it on rain teams anyways. But a nice attack boost and defense boost is the most likely option. They may lower its speed though, which will not benefit Swift Swim at all.

They may also raise it like they did with Mawile's attack. I feel like Mega Swampert's sleek body could symbolize speed. Imagine it on all fours with it's head looking forward, it'll be like a round car which tend to be faster than chunky, boxy cars.

Pokefan203302 June 8th, 2014 9:32 AM

Maybe, since they mention that de-evolution regresses evolution, it lowers base stats, though makes the ability different. Maybe an infinite lasting weather effect for Groudon and Kyogre. Would link to why they nerfed the duo's ability. And that would be amazing if they made Primal Archeops.

Well Corocoro implies that their Primal forms were stronger than their current forms, so one would imagine its stats going up. An example of animals becoming weaker upon evolving is...well we're one. Our ancestors are believed to have been stronger than we are.

If they made a Primal Archeops it may lose it's flying type considering that the only thing before one of the first flying dinosaurs is...well feathered dinosaurs that are merely jumping. But then again Dodrio is based on a flightless bird yet can fly...
If they made a Primal Genosect it'll probably be weaker as Plasma is said to have made it stronger.

DJTiki June 8th, 2014 10:12 AM

Speaking of which, did anyone see the screenshots of Primal Kyorge and Groudon. I believe they are shown using a signature move, since Eruption is way different from what Groudon is doing. And Kyorge's is kind of hard to make out, im guessing its a new Surf variant, maybe Tsunami. I mean Groudon is surrounded by rocky pillars and is standing on lava, THATS INTENSE

Also it looks like Swampert can now lift for realz and looks badass in its mega form. Swift swim is a great ability and will be a good pokemon to use in a rain team.

Remember this game is a remake. Not some sort of re-release of the old games :V

HG/SS and FR/LF were remakes as well btw, and didn't change all that much ! :V

Though, giving mega swampert swift swim is kinda odd given the overall fall out of favor of weather teams..

Well, they refer to "Ancient De-Evolution" as regressing.

I think those moves might've been Fire Blast and Hydro Pump.

It standing on Lava is likely the battle field.

Considering how Brendan and May were updated, I'm doubtful Birch will receive major changes. If he does... then oh well, there's not much to screw up on the man! He can't be made a completely different character, so we'll see.

I'm mostly concerned with Brawly, after seeing what happened to Tabitha.
(I also don't want any of the female Gym Leaders or Elite Four to become over-sexualized, they had perfectly fine designs originally.)

I think that the trainers that had official artwork for Gen III will not see that radical of a change. Tabitha lacked official artwork similar to the Johto executives and the rest of the admins for Aqua, Magma, and Rocket.

He might have lacked official artwork but there had to have been some artwork done to solidify his design before turning it into a sprite. People felt Kris's redesign into Lyra was a radical change, even though Kris had a fair amount of official art. And Sabrina was changed...quite drastically for HGSS. So I don't think having official art really has anything to do with who they decide to change.

antemortem June 8th, 2014 11:03 AM

Except Kris and Lyra aren't technically the same character.

Lyra is considered by Gf to be another character instead of a redesign (I still think of her as a redesign though). Sabrina...I guess her change is similar to Aqua and Brendan getting much tanner skin, and in the case of Aqua style.

All I've ever seen regarding that is that Lyra was "designed from scratch," but technically Ethan isn't the same character as Gold because Gold never appears as an NPC in GSC but Ethan can be an NPC in HGSS. So unless someone from Game Freak actually said "Lyra is not the same character as the Crystal female protagonist," it's hard to say either way, because after seeing Tabitha's new design I'm fairly certain that was designed from scratch, too.

And even if we consider Kris and Lyra separate characters, since Kris also never appeared as an NPC, to replace the female player character is still considered a drastic change in design.

And yes, Team Aqua also got pretty major redesigns, too. Archie looks incredibly different from before, so it's clear Game Freak isn't against changing characters who not only had official art, but also played prominent roles in the anime and other media.

Archie looks the least different imo, the only change I see is the tan and the clothes.

antemortem June 8th, 2014 11:30 AM

Everyone got a "clothing and skin color change" though by that logic lol. Shelly's hair color is just also different. Archie's facial hair is different, I think, and his clothes are 100% different so if you think about it's very drastic. Maxie just got boots and I think the top is different? Plus glasses. I really think everything is very different from the originals.

Tabitha used my favorite pokemon, looked badass both in-game and in the anime! And in the anime he's one of the rare bad guy not to have had his pokemon faint to Ash's or to a bad plot device, yet he fought with the protagonists and the team rocket trio..
Oh well.. At least they did good with Courtney I guess.. :*(

And now Archie wears tights, and looks less classy/vilainous than he used to.. I'm not sure about Shelly either..

And I really don't see why the trainer re-design was necessary.. They look anorexic now.. Nice message to send young people.. And honestly, May's and Brendan's clothes were some of my favorite protagonist clothing in the Pokemon series.. But, not anymore I guess.. :(

I got a bad feeling now about what they'll reveal at E3.. I hope they won't get too much of my hopes up.. :/

You might be the only person I agree with on this subject, a lot of the redesigns didnt feel like they fixed anything on the old characters but just rearranged them to fit in with X/Y's art direction which already had its problems with genericism and archytpical concepts. I really don't like what they did with May, I don't like how they did nothing but age her down, took away the seriousness of her skill and made her into this cute-looking subservant little-sister looking character like Shauna.... which I honestly cant stand. More so I'm disturbed about how plain her outfit is along with it. Instead of the highly stylized pokemon themed clothing she used to have, how shes wearing some typical female moe appeal.

Brendan I have the least problem with, the Wet-suit styled clothing, though impractical at least makes sense and looks consistant as opposed to May's apparent mash up of random things thrown together. If she was given the same wetsuit theme I'd be pretty fine with that... its just that huge bow that bugs me. I liked may because she looked tough, and badass, in her original scheme... now she just looks like an ametuer first-timer... Man...

I'd be a bit better at ease with Brendan if he didnt have that exaggerated, anime happy-go-lucky look in his face from that picture. It was fine when he had that normal smile in the old artwork and confident look, now he looks weird to stare at.

Don't you think you're looking at May way too harshly? Her design is based pretty tight on her original Ruby/Sapphire concept art (see: her hand/leg positions) except her appearance was updated to fit the more recent styles of art. For instance, she wasn't gonna be kept short and stocky (compared to her now tall and skinny design) because the art models are considerably larger nowadays and her bandanna's position hardly reflects on her character. It's just wrapped around her head in a thinner bound than it used to be, from what I can see.

DJTiki June 8th, 2014 11:45 AM

The only thing about Brendan's design I'm disappointed about is that they showed some of his brown hair xD. I for one, wouldve loved for the "Brendan has white hair" joke to continue. cx

I feel it necessary to be harsh on her because I honestly cant see how the redesign bettered her. An update to me means to redo, not remake. Her emerald outfit was an update.

Them making her super skinny too is also a bit of a head scratcher, her stalky body was more realistic of a 10 year old. Though, its not whether shes tall or bowl-legged as she is now; I can live with it. But what they did in this "new" art direction was just too over the top, even for a remake, look at Red and Ethan. They still at least mirror their old selves but have more detail to their original outfits. Arguably they did more for Brendan in the same respect. They completely redressed may with no intentions or idea of theme whatsoever besides just making her cute - because all female protagonists must be adnorable at priority right? Not in my regard. The thing with her bandanna is that the bands were swept to the back, this ribbon is thrown to the front of her head. Thus negating her badassary in favour of making her supposidly more innocent and naive, babyish even. I don't like moe fodder.

I hope that Winona keeps her warrior look. I loved how it looked like she was looking down at you from above.

I hope that Flannery is also kept looking tough. Roxanne could get a more mature, strong look as she looks a bit childish. Liza is a child so her child like appearance is alright.

I'm more concerned about the reduction of the "cool/badass" factor that came out of the pokecentric stylization the past 4 gens had on their characters, the detail, the unique outfits that reflected their world and their skill to their personalities. I'm disappointed that this unwritten role was not carried over in this game despite Gen 3 having the most particularly stylized visuals in the franchise. Since Gen 5 that was all lost in favour of simplicity only worsened by X/Y. Look at Calem wears compared to what Lucas or Red used to wear, major downgrade with the "modern" hypster look taking over, the unreasonably tight pants, awkward had and unused glasses really depress me. I don't GF to take real-world tacky trends as their inspiration anymore. Theres no creativity, no complexity, no detail at all.

This is what I feel has ruined May as well, there isnt any style to her at all anymore.

Rhetorically speaking - pretending if they were, is what is basically happening to may and what they might as well be doing. The example was taking Kris the original character we identify with, redesigning her (Lyra) and expecting the followers to see that as the same character. The degree of alteration I see done to May might as well be making her another character.

Belldandy June 8th, 2014 1:09 PM

May just looks quirky now. Brendan was well-updated to avoid confusion about his hat (thankfully), but May's bangs are just blah. She doesn't have any hips, either; she just looks like a plank. I hope customization returns.

Well then again each generation had their own look to it and different themes
Gen1 had the basic look and themes to be found in a series beginnings
Gen2 had the somewhat of the same themes but were more fresh and refined.
Gen3 had the conflicting themes are tropical and mountain-esque rough looking, along with alot of nature
Gen4 had a lot of atmosphere, conflicting godly Pokemon, it had an epic feel
Gen5 went back to the basics had that with a combination of style to it(Alder, and the starting gym)
Gen6 had obviously the beauty theme

Whats the theme now? Everyone looks like a damn flashy-fashionista now post-X/Y.-_-
Isnt it also weird that Team Magma is all about heat yet Aqua are the tanned ones?

Team Magma looks almost exactly like Team-Flare now with horns.

Well thats pretty much it, the same theme as nature, with a combination of flashy, somewhat unjustified if you ask me. But I'm fine with it.

antemortem June 8th, 2014 1:31 PM

you can't honestly think May could be confused as an entirely new character ahah

Unjustified is just that. It doesnt make sense. The Wetsuit for Brendan I perfectly get. If they wanted a theme they could have had that as the consistancy, make the protagonists more like those animal watchers, or marine biologists or something. That would be fine. Having the residue of Gen 6's tacky-fashion obession seep into this game is what throws away any sense of structured theme at all. The giant bow is just there to look obnoxious. There is no reason behind it.

I can't actually argue considering I hated Team Flare, Lysandre excluded. So I can see why you would be upset.

LOL @ Team Magma looking like Team Flare. The differences are obvious. The only similarity is that they're both red, and not even the same shade of red.

DJTiki June 8th, 2014 2:01 PM

No its mainly Maxie, who looks like one of their tacky scientists.

I'm sure Brawly will rival mega swampert in terms of muscle bulk, if the other redesigns are any indications XD

And yeah, definitely I hope they don't go too crazy with them and the rest..

I'd be a bit better at ease with Brendan if he didnt have that exaggerated, anime happy-go-lucky look in his face from that picture. It was fine when he had that normal smile in the old artwork and confident look, now he looks weird to stare at.

I didn't like shauna much either.. But then again, the "friends" in X/Y were incredibly shallow, even for a pokemon game ! Its really too bad because I liked where some of them were heading. Trevor reminded me of Max in the advanced series anime, and Tierno was.. different. Ultimately, Tierno ended up staring in many unflattering drawings on the miiverse, but not doing much else..

What annoys me the most in the designs is the slenderman look they give their characters since gen 6.. Well, actually, they were always kinda thin, but now, its just approaching uncanny valley..
The characters in X/Y looked kinda creepy at times.. :/

I guess I'll have to live with it.. Hopefully, they still got a couple more chances of not disappointing me enough to skip this one..

Well, I wouldn't say there is no creativity. Creativity is mainly subjective, there can be creativity in doing something ugly/disliked or beautiful/liked. But I gotta admit, her clothes do look kinda plain now.. The green accents added a nice touch.

Retconned into a cheesy-looking comic relief character, a sad demise.. He was the only vilain I identified with.. (well mainly in the anime)
Well, by identify, I don't mean I don't like any other villains, because the Rocket Trio and etc, are still some of my favorites.

But still, if they freaking fix mightyena/poochyena for the remake, that would completely make everything right for me :3
With the physical / special split from the types, the never ending upgrades to all the other pokes in Hoenn, and the lack of updates on poochyena/mightyena I can't really see how it'll be able to do its job better, or even just as well as it used to during the SP campaign in Emerald..

I hated team flare because they were boring and were underdeveloped completely with a terrible early motivation and etc... horrible team. It seemed like they were trying to go for the classic-team rocket look where everyone looked the same, grunts were all useless and Admins were nothing but talk. I never understood how Genwunners people prefered that. The only team that scheme worked best for was Team Snaggem, where they were pretty strong and their Admins could actually back up their taunts.

I'm happy Team Magma and Team Aqua, were given individuality, more so than expected. Getting the team Galactic treatment is fine with me but would be even better if they added new Admins rather than distort the old ones. Shelly looks like the polar opposite of what she used to be. I don't even know whos who anymore, thus the nostalgia factor for these remakes to work is lost. If they were going to just change all the characters this might as well be a sequel. Though I do like to assume the Team Aqua members are all black now considering we barely have any black people in the games but would rather they be their own characters.

Yeah, i really, really, really, really hated Team Flare, they were just there, and they had little to no development what so ever.

Were coming to that age where rivals arent even challenging anymore, everyone just wants to be your friends and skip down the yellow brick road. What happened to the badasses I was used to? The rivals that actually wanted to surpass you and humiliate you through it? That ended at Gen 2.

the problem for me seems to be the lack of pokecentric art we're getting. The clothing just looks like generic clothing to fit anime memes instead of keeping consistency with the in-universe.

I really wish they would evolve some regular pokemon first and not just Mega-glue everything. Like Sableye. First stage pokemon should never get a mega. I'd rather a longer chain; and Mightyena needs a Third Stage before a Mega. Its really weak.

I would probably have to disagree that somewhat challenging rivals ended at Gen 2, call me a "Genfiver" or whatever, but Hugh and N were not that bad. Considering N caught a legendary and the only rival to battle you with all 17 types at the time, and Hugh, while little developed, wasn't all that bad. But i will agree that rivals were best in its early stages, and that XYs rivals, or should I say tag-alongs, were boring, annoying, and easy as hell.

N was the villainous team leader so I don't consider him a Rival. For me Hugh was one of the easiest, but that may or may not have something to do with our teams having been different.

I think Barry was the last true hard rival.

Anyways after the redesigns perhaps this is what GF meant by "New World" in their ad...some of them are unrecognizable xD.

Barry was cool, and thats that.

Pepperton June 8th, 2014 2:55 PM

Hugh and N were alright, but I think Barry truly embodies the perfect rival. Cocky enough that you want to beat him at everything he does, but nice enough that he can be your friend and supporter in times of danger. Of course, that's not to say other rivals haven't achieved those traits to some degree, but Barry's personality is perfect. Of course, this all relates to the story line of the games, and if Wally becomes more of a prominent rival in these games, he could have less of an arrogant, overly confident feel, but more of a mysterious, unknowingly sinister persona. I'd like to see that d:

Leviathan June 8th, 2014 3:10 PM

In a sense, he does. I mean, the point to redesigning these characters is to give off a new feel, so if they focused to much on keeping him similar to his original concept, it wouldn't work as well in the remakes. I like that they changed a lot about both evil teams, and they're going to look fantastic in 3D. Not that I didn't enjoy Shelly's hairstyle before, but the new do looks very nice. :]

Iceshadow3317 June 8th, 2014 4:33 PM

They should really do something like the easy and hard mode for BW2, except without requiring to have an IR connection with another DS that finished the game..

Definitely, regular evos should also be handed around. And yeah, given what happened with some pokemons, mega-evo is not always the answer.

That's why I said fix Mightyena, not mega-evolve. I seriously doubt a mega-evo would be all that useful right now on it. Its stats and etc are awfully close to being viable in general. But a lot of oversight from the devs made it fall short.

Intimidate worked wonders in single player in gen3. And it added up to its typing nicely given all ghost moves being physical at the time, and dark being super effective against them. But now that's not gonna work in ORAS..

And you'd be surprised, in general / multiplayer, in gen 6, its not as weak as people may think when it has moxie.
But it comes short as a physical sweeper.. Meaning that, you won't one shot most things until you're at +2 / +3 moxie boosts, even when super effective sometimes.(all its moves have under 90 base power, and the most powerful don't have STAB)
But +3 and up one shot most commonly seen offensive pokemons. The main issue is getting there, and lack of versatility, given right now there is basically one set viable for mightyena, and sucker punch is unreliable, and cant protect against burns crippling and etc..

In essence, the tools to make it work exist already, but the devs haven't lightened up, and just come up with the weirdest ideas ever. Like, it can't learn pursuit, but poochyena's entry go on and on about it chasing its pray to exhaustion.. Go figure..
And it doesn't lie in slapping the most OP ability you can think of, its just a question of moves and adding a little into its stats. Azumarill got +10 into its sp attack in X/Y, I really don't see why that was justified, and given they took such liberty, its kinda odd they didn't add up a little into other pokemon's stats..

But if they'd give us a mega and nothing else, its still better than nothing in the end..

I liked Hugh, I actually gave him a very unflattering name, but, as the game progressed I kinda felt bad about it, because he wasn't such a dick after all..

Call me crazy, but I actually liked Cheren and Bianca as well !

I disliked all the "friends" in gen 6 though. And I kinda don't like Wally at all. Well, actually that's not true. The Adventure comics gave him such a fantastic role and made him interesting !
But in the game, I find him kinda arrogant at times.. And overall fighting him is a little more than a HM puzzle's worth in terms of fun or interest..

Seeing as they already released the official artwork for character redesigns, I doubt there will be any more changes to the concepts - what you see is the final look for May, and there's no way one could mistake her ORAS revamp for an entirely new character. Basically the only thing that changed was her bandanna.

Yeah, and she's slightly paler but she's still obviously May. I think Brendan is harder to tell compared to her (he's not that hard either).

I was being facetious on that, I know thats the final artwork obviously. The reduction of her bandana though is a big defining change though, especially for the fact that it isnt even subtle. Though consideing the marketing on the character, shes more recognizable in her default scheme regardless of colour. They didnt change Brendan's had. Why change May's head piece?

Maybe while Gf were working on the game they liked her look with her new head piece when trying out customization? I hope that we can give her back her old head pieces from RS and E in the game. I also hope we can give Brendan his RS and E style hat (only the color at the bottom has changed).

That's true. Assuming they also get a +100 stat boost then that would take both Kyogre & Groudon upto 770 total, and they're already a heavy threat in meta game.

That only makes me think further that they will have to make the other legendaries catch up to them. So i am almost positive that the other legendaries will get a Primal Forme.

At least they can keep Mewtwo X and Y company in the high mid 700's.
Also I think that we shouldn't call them formes yet. If they're like Megas then they should simply be called Primal, if not that'll be like calling Mega Mewtwo X Mega Mewtwo X forme :P

True. So I am only hoping that Ho-Oh finally becomes a Rainbow, like it was meant to be xD

I can see it's Mega, Devolution, or if there's even another kind of Ultravolution then it'll have a large rainbow tail and it's comb will be rainbow too. Lugia could have the lines of water reflecting light back up like in an aquarium.

Or the bells from HgSs and the wings fusing to make the item they need to transform.

Or maybe they could reintroduce the DNA Splicers and have ho-oh and lugia fuse. That would be odd....but cool.

Tomorrow is Nintendo's E3. Hope they give us a long trailer and not some 10 second teaser.

Pepperton June 9th, 2014 12:13 PM

So exciting, especially with the CoroCoro leaks. Maybe a full battle sequence with Sceptile and Swampert Mega evolving with Brendan and May's new bangles, as well as showing off Groudon and Kyogre's devolution animation. If they announce anything new, I think right now I'm most interested in customization of playable characters and the Battle Frontier's return.

Battle Frontier may need to be saved for later so that we won't get everything at once xD. I want to see customization and some towns and cities.

I honestly wanna see a fully revamped Secret Bases, with some furniture, and the whole nine yards. Especially, if it gets streetpass functionality.

Pepperton June 9th, 2014 1:04 PM

They could showcase how Streetpass works with secret bases, for sure. I mean, anything's in the realm of possibility here for E3. No one can be absolutely positive that they're going to show a certain piece of information, except maybe the new Megas in action. As it gets closer, the more anxious I become. :c

Well we've got the Nintendo Digital Conference at E3 to look forward too tomorrow! I've no doubt that we will see something ORAS related. :]

I hope so. At least the secret bases should be shown.

What do you guys hope they don't talk about? I'd like for them to not spend any time on useless things and give us substantial information on the more pressing questions spawned by the leaks. I don't know about anyone else, but I know I'm dying to hear the story behind prehistoric devolution.

I'm sort of hoping they save the story behind Ancient devolution for later so that we have some info to look forward to in the months to come. If not then we may have a drought until November, unless of course GF has a lot more to show...if so then they should go ahead and tell us xD.

I really, really, really hope that they don't spoil, anything extra about Battle Frontiers and post-game, save for a ORAS Direct.

Pepperton June 9th, 2014 5:28 PM

I guess I'm abnormal, because I want to know everything now, haha. Don't want them to save anything for later, just give us the main information of the games and leave the little details up for speculation. Of course, it's also fun to only release little pieces at a time in order to build up hype for the games.

Mostly I want them to keep most of the information a secret for now in order to build hype. Also I hope that they save a few things for us to discover on our own. Perhaps they'll even not reveal Ancient Rayquaza in order to surprise us...or hint at Delta Emerald being a game in the making...

Salzorrah June 9th, 2014 11:45 PM

If I had to speculate, they would probably reveal something really big in E3 tomorrow. Maybe what Corocoro has shown will obviously be there, maybe something big about Mega Diancie and its purpose? I mean why would they add a Kalos Mega in the game? Unless there is a big revelation ingame.
