Download XSE Download Advance Map 1.92 or 1.95 (latter rumoured to have bugs) XSE is for scripting, but as you said, and I support that notion, one thing leads to another. Start out playing with advance map, learn the nature of the programs. As for any risks, perhaps read up on var's and flag's in a tutorial about scripting. Flags and var's if used wrongly has the power to eff up lots of shet. Good luck! |
You can search on youtube for complete step by step videos. Some of them are quite old but the basics are still intact.
Good luck! |
Here are the download links of a scripting tool and a mapping tool.
XSE v1.1.1 - http://www.mediafire.com/download/8qe70zzp45bjf91/Unofficial_XSE.zip A-Map 1.92 - http://www.mediafire.com/download/6o0c14m8naadlf0/am1.92.zip And here's my basic scripting tutorial. http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=185188 Hope that helps~ ^^ |
You need to load the roms themselves, not the zip files that they're in.
|
I'm in the same boat as you, Tao Dragon! I know a bit about overworld mapping, but that's really it. I too have just started poking around with XSE and AM 1.92. Best of luck to us both!

Personally, not sure how into emulators you are, but I recommend VBA-M, since it's being actively updated (or at least, it was last I checked).
|
With A-Map, you just have to save. When you save, the changes will be written to the rom, and when you load the rom in the emulator after saving, you should see the changes reflected in the rom. It's important to note that you will never use the emulator in conjunction with A-Map itself because you're editing the rom.
Honestly, you should not use the zip files at all. Not just for emulators, but in general. If you want to use what's inside, ALWAYS unzip, and edit/use the unzipped content. |
These copies should work...though I don't really see why you're creating copies. There's an icon in the top left under "File" that looks like a GBA cartridge with a blue down arrow in front of it. Click that and it'll save to the current rom you're editing. Or you can just go to "File" and save.
Also, are you using A-Map 1.92 or 1.95? |
Alright, well I just submitted a tutorial that has to do with this, but it hasn't been accepted yet. This is what I wrote:
Oh you just started ROM hacking and don't know what to do, or where to start off? Well, I was in the same boat one year ago. Had a great idea for a hack, but didn't know how to hack. Well, since there's a lot of noobies here in PC wanting to learn to hack, I wrote this little document for you guys.. Okay, so first off, you need to download a ROM. I can't link you to one because it's against the rules, but google is your friend. Choose the ROM you want to hack, I say you should go for Fire Red. I used to be a sapphire hacker, and that didn't go well. The two ROMs that you DON'T wanna hack are Leaf Green and Sapphire. There's less ASM routines for them, and have less support from tools. The reason I hack Fire Red is because of this that my friend sent me last year: "Well, I don't mean to be a bug on your shoulder, but you see what FR is capable of?: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=302476 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=293704 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=267584 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=298934 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=240183 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=257647 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=301711 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=206197 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=304077 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=291023 http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=246740 And the best of them all: http://www.pokecommunity.com/showthread.php?t=194241 I used to be a Ruby hacker, but I then I realized that even though RSE were good games, on the inside they aren't. You know? I've never even played FR (nor will I) but still. You can change FR into Ruby by appearance if you wanted (and very easily). So RSE aren't as great as they seem. I don't want you to change, but think about it. Plus, not everyone carries Sapphire ROMs. I've seen before that people are attracted to the hack, just that it's Sapphire or Leaf Green, and they don't play it for that reason alone. Also, may I suggest joining romhack.me? You could ask your questions easily and share info on your hack." -gogojjtech Also keep in mind that was before they expanded the Pokedex, and allowed more mons to be added, but that can be done in emerald too. After you decide the ROM that you're gonna use (Please use Emerald or Fire Red, and if you don't wanna use those for any reason, then at least Ruby) you're ready to download some tools :)Alright, so let's start with the most important tools. Those two are Advanced Map (which will soon be replaced my MEH) and XSE (Extreme Script Editor). With XSE you can make a script, which can do many things, like the most basic of scripts: a talking script, or a complex script full of trainer battles and movements, and more. The other tool is Advanced Map. That tool is used for mapping (which is, if it wasn't obvious enough, making maps), adding people, giving scripts to people, giving scripts to signposts, putting Pokemon in the wild, and much much more. Here are the best two in my opinion scripting tutorials: Tajaros's XSE Tutorial (which I used to learn) and Diegoisawesome's scripting tutorial which is longer, and really good There's some mapping, and other types of tutorials HERE you can click that and find them there :) *also, I don't expect you to learn scripting in a day, it's gonna take like a week, but trust me it's worth it. A hack needs new scripts to be a good hack. Once you have those tools, you can get other tools that would be helpful. Here's a list of some tools, and for some, a download link.
There's a lot more tools, but those are just some important ones you're gonna need. After all this is an introduction to hacking. If there's something you don't know how to do, just ask people to HELP you, not to do it for you, or just make a thread in the begginer's lounge or look in the tutorials or something. Also here's some resources that can help you out:
Now that's about it, now go explore around the internet and make your rom hack :) However, if there is no one thing that I absolutely must say it is that the best way to learn ROM hacking is through experience.." I think that should be more than enough :) |
Quote:
2. You can 'save state' in Visual Boy Advance which allows you to 'load state' back to that point, after reloading the ROM. That way you don't have to sit through the whole intro over and over. |
