Anyone else HATE the Vermilion Gym trash can puzzle?
I'm playing Pokémon Blue atm and it's occurred to me how annoying this puzzle is. About 15 minutes in and for some reason I can't seem to complete the Vermilion Gym Puzzle. I know the rule is that the switch is in a 'trash can right next to the other' but that means more often than not you can get a 1 in 4 chance of getting it correct. So if you're having really bad luck (which I currently am having), you could effectively be stuck at this puzzle forever.
Has anyone else spent ages on this puzzle as a result of very bad luck? The longest I think I spent on it was half an hour. I sincerely hope that doesn't happen to me again. Sometimes I get it first time round, but it occurred to me how frustrating this puzzle really is, since it relies on pure luck. Generally my luck on the puzzle is quite poor, lol. |
It's taken me about an hour and a half to completely this puzzle, if I remember correctly. :( Didn't like it at all; I seriously wish it were easier. I might give these games another go someday, and will see how it goes this time around!

I actually think it's fun. It provides a non-battle related challenge in the game, and at the same time highlights the electric theme of the gym as well.
I really didn't like it, just because it was random instead of a real puzzle like the rest of the gyms.
I hated it too, because you needed too much luck to complete it. Hell, I've skipped this gym on my first playthrough, and didn't come back until I defeated Blaine.
However, the usage of emulators and save states has made this gym much more bearable for me. |
That's weird, I never even noticed it, I just took two random cans, I believe I got them right in both Yellow and Firered from the first one. Lol, weird. xD
I don't hate it, but it was certainly annoying. Even when years later I was playing the remakes for the first time, I had bad flashbacks about it.
I actually have great luck everytime I do that puzzle (never took more than three times for me), but I think it is just a an unnecessary addition to the games. Just like most gym puzzles, by the way.

I think, last time I got it on my first try. The stupidest thing about this puzzle is: if you check a trash can and there's no switch in it and after that you check another one that's next to it and has a switch in it, there's a chance that the second switch is in the can you just checked (where did this switch suddenly come from?).
I used to hate it so much as a kid until I realized that the second bin is going to be next to the first which made it a lot easier. Now I only dislike it.
I do not hate it just find it really annoying puzzle to do.
I hated that puzzle when I first played Red. I had awful luck with it, and it took me a really long time to clear it. I've had much better luck with it since, but I still don't like it too much.
I despise that gym puzzle. I know the second lock is in the trash can right next to the first, but it seems like I never get it right. Recently, I tried saving and restarting the game after finding the first lock. Doesn't work, the game resets the locks when you restart even in the originals.
It does suck that there's no skill whatsoever involved in solving it, but it's not the hardest thing in the world, since your odds of choosing the right second switch never fall below 25%.
It's annoying, sure, but I don't hate it. Like others have said, it provides a bit of a challenge, albeit one based on luck. Plus, none of the other gyms have as annoying puzzles, so it being a one-time thing is a lot better than having difficult/bothersome puzzles in all the gyms.
Haha, yes. I have very bad luck as well and always choose the wrong trashcan when I find the first one. What an obnoxious puzzle. xD

Despised this puzzle with a passion. I'm pretty sure it was the sole reason it took forever for me to get through my first run of Kanto. After trying to complete it for hours upon hours, I decided to give up. Only weeks later did I want to pick it up and try again. Sure, it adds a bit of challenge to the games, but they could've found a way to make it more challenging without being such a tedious, frustrating puzzle.
I didn't really find any problems with it personally, probably due to me having no knowledge of the older games and having to resort to the internet for help during my travels, and having the lack of the cause of frustration, I had no issues. I should probably try without external aid. :x

I hated doing the cans, but since I've watched speedrunners, the cans became clear to me.
http://i.imgur.com/mCgVe4w.jpg ^Note that this trick only works in the original RBY. You do not need to worry about the cans in GSC's Vermilion. FRLG and HGSS are both mandatory and don't follow such an easy system. |
I've never had a problem with this gym. I'm surprised that so many have had trouble.
I always found that puzzle easy (luck I suppose, I just guess where they are lol). I agree though, it is a pretty boring puzzle.
I hated them with a passion, so difficult...
actually i found it easy. I was 8 years old when I first solved the puzzle on Pokemon Blue and took me about 5 minutes to do it. Of course I was lucky, the second time on Pokemon Yellow took me a bit more but still. ALL HAIL THE FIRST GENERATION! :D
