Completing the Pokedex is Impossible
I just found something out. You can't under any circumstances trade ANY Legendary Pokemon at all, bar Xerneas and Yveltal. Those 2 are the only tradeable legendaries. There is no way to complete the Pokedex in X and/or Y.
The only way is for GameFreak to offer an event, or use the Pokemon Bank yourself. Attempt to trade any other way, and it will immediately say "The trade has been canceled." You can't even use Wonder Trade, as you get the message "This is a Special Pokémon, it can't be traded." Way to go! Now we CAN'T catch 'em all. |
Are you sure? Because back in January and February, I had no problems being traded legendaries like Groudon, Kyogre and Palkia over the GTS. Maybe the ones you were trying to trade were hacked or something?

Yeah, I've been able to trade legendaries, too. Though, completing Pokédex in X and Y is definitely a tough task; there are so many Pokémon out there for you to capture, it's nearly impossible. I'd personally give it a go, but sadly, I don't have motivation, and nor do I have enough time. :( Last time I ever tried finishing my Pokédex was in Emerald, which was almost eight years ago.

You DO realize you can import from Generation 5, yes? Have a completed Dex there? Import, 30 at a time. All done.
|
People have in fact completed the National Dex in X/Y. A lot of the legendaries can be imported from games from previous generations.
One thing to be aware of is the fact that Pokemon given out via an event (such as the PokeBall pattern Vivillon, or the Spring 2012 Zekrom) have a special ribbon attached to them that prevents them from being traded on the GTS or Wonder Trade. You can still trade these Pokemon directly with another person. Also, the legendary Pokemon that are only legitimately obtainable via events aren't required in order to complete the National Dex. |

Use normal Wi-Fi trading to trade for event Pokemon and legendaries.
Make sure your Pokemon does not have an event ribbon before trading over GTS. |
I completed the 'dex for X months back.
I don't know if I have it in me to complete it again since I sold all my Pokemon games (yes, even if that means deleting the data of all my hard earned Pokemon). I'm not... looking forward to trying that again. I'm going back to super casual Pokemon playing (no competitive scene for me anymore) for the future. haha |

I still have to import the rest of mine that are legendaries, but I still have some breeding to do. I told myself I would just do one generation at a time but already put some legendaries from everywhere in the Bank. Kanto is nearly complete; I just have to get my Meowth and Persian in, do a little breeding for others, and I'm good. |
I've completed the dex minus Gen V, but have all the legendaries that were given by a friend. If you can find someone who is willing to give you those pokemon add them with their FC, as Special Pokemon can only be traded person to person, not over the GTS.

Anyway, if I ever decided to pick up Pokemon again, I think a fresh start is a good idea especially if I'm veering away from the competitive scene. |
Just one other point... If you're talking about completing just the XY Pokédex, then you only need one Legendary Bird, rather than all three.
