Engine Improvements for ORAS
Judging from the trailer, screenshots etc it is pretty obvious that ORAS will be using the same engine that XY had. However that creates a problem, the embarrassingly low frame rate that occurred whenever you entered a battle with 3D turned on. This problem is major and surely would have not gone unnoticed by Nintendo/Game Freak, surely to create the best experience the engine must be modified to allow higher frame rate when playing in 3D, especially as 3D is the gimmick of the 3DS you would expect that a game made for this console could be played in 3D without any frame rate drops. Anyway my rant is over, I'm sure there are many other improvements that need to be made, so feel free to post them down below :)

The one you highlighed is my biggest one, to be honest.
I hope there won't be another city that ruins save files. :p |
I'm hoping they've figured out how to make the system run a bit smoother. I'd imagine there will still be trouble with Spinda being rendered in 3D. Spinda is extra slow because of how its texture is generated.
I, admittedly, don't care. I don't use the 3D. |
It was never a big issue to me because I almost never use the extra 3D effect of the 3DS. 3D was never a fad that I was that into, and Nintendo kinda jumped on the 3D bandwagon near the end of bandwagon's road.
'Course, it would be nice if they try to make little improvements to the existing system, and, like Sverige said, if there's no Lumiose City save glitches. |
I hope so, even when one wasn't using 3D I noticed the frame rate down, such as in the overworld when one is riding their bike (the place I noticed it more was by the river near the Daycare).
|
I'm pretty sure Lumiose City's save glitch is just a random bug. What do you expect, they moved from a system they all know so much, to a whole different system. I don't blame them tbh. I'm pretty sure they would fix up the codings for ORAS since they have known their errors with XY.
|
X and Y sort of lay the groundworks for Generation VI, any issues such as framerate or graphical glitches can be amended in the next set of games. We can already see they have tweaked the graphics of ORAS in comparison to XY, so I'm pretty sure they will improve upon this for these games.
|
Can someone give me an example of the frame rate problem ?
|
The most prominent example being the Horde Battles. Usually, framerate drops to a very low.
|
3D mode gives me headache, but I can't help but to think something like this would have been fixed if it was noticed during all the beta testing I'm confident was done on the games before their release. Surely someone had 3D mode on to test the 3D capabilities! How was it not noticed and fixed prior to release? I won't keep my fingers crossed that it's been fixed.
|
Yeah, it's possible they can fix things within the same gen. Platinum improved upon DP in a number of areas, and HGSS did as well, showcasing more graphical power (and more efficient modelling of areas as well if you look into it - e.g. in DP they modelled all the sides of buildings, including those you would never see in the game... which was probably why there were so many gatehouses in Sinnoh, unlike in Johto in HGSS because they became more efficient). Meanwhile in BW/B2W2 the graphics again improved, and they showed off their confidence in camera angles with every single bridge you walked over.
Game Freak were still coming to grips with a new game engine and 3D system over sprites, so I would expect them to improve over X&Y's effort. EDIT: Quote:
But no, it's not a given it would be fixed now either. But I do expect that with each game they release they'd just get better with it; and arguably that has happened in other aspects over the years too. Ignoring the whole dropping of features from the previous games. |
I never played with 3D on for that reason, the lag really got on my nerves, but it's something that can be turned on and off, so it wasn't that big of a deal, especially because the game isn't meant to be played entirely in 3D. The system is liable to some improvements, of course, and I'm sure they'll look into fixing the issues that X and Y brought up. Personally, I would rather have them spend more time on adding new features and developing the story.

I didn't say graphics - 3D compatibility issues is what this thread is discussing, and the game runs perfectly fine if the 3D option is turned off, so I would rather Game Freak work on something that directly affects the players gameplay experience, such as the storyline or features. That's isn't to say that it's not important for them to work out those issues X and y had with the 3D option, but it'd something that in my opinion could be left alone.

All in all, the Horde battles aren't even that bad to begin with; as has been stated earlier in the topic, there are games that have been released with much more relevant glitches and errors. |

Also as I already said usually when making a game one thinks of the feature before hand so it's not a zero-sum thing where if they focus more on features they'll be able to focus less on graphics or vise versa. |
Tbh, I don't really use 3D, and I may speak for everyone that most of us, if not all use 3D mode. In my opinion, if GF would make the game run smoothly, they should focus on the non-3D mode aspect first.
|
I wonder if the game will save faster (is saving part of the engine?) as it's gotten faster since Pt compared to the last games. Though XY already save quite fast.
The fact that GF is getting issues with the 3D mode seems to show that they're still beginners when it comes to the stereoscopic 3D. |
