Altering Cave

This space right here. Will it return to ORAS with a different functionality or will this be quietly swept under the carpet?

Perhaps it'll be replaced by a Friend Safari, or perhaps return back to being like it was in RS...with no cave being there to begin with.

Well, those are all options but what do you think is most plausible? I think it's possible that this cave will return, but will have Pokemon with Hidden Abilities, since there are still several that they haven't even released yet haha.

Yeah, it might be like with the Friend Safari and possibly have stuff based on Friend Codes your 3DS has stored, they might provide a list of the things that can be found, it may not be overly exciting but still a possibility I thought of after seeing that.

The cave was supposed to have event Pokémon (ones that can be captured in the wild), but they were never really released at all, so it seems like GF ditched the idea, and added them to the Safari zone extension (or Artisan cave for Smeargle) in case they really never went ahead with it. So I honestly think they won't bring it back, and simply put something else in it. Maybe it'll be a cave but with another name as 'Altering' was a reference for the changing Pokémon in it. Maybe something like 'Friend Cave' or 'Hidden Cave' and be accessible post game only and contains hidden ability Pokémon like you suggested.

cmtthws92 August 1st, 2014 7:18 PM

Altering Cave is pretty useless. It was then so there is no point of it showing up. If by chance it does, then it will probably be for nostalgic purposes.

Hiatus August 1st, 2014 7:28 PM

If this does return, what I would like to see, personally, is Pokémon with higher shiny rate. They could incorporate online functionality, maybe, and have it utilize Friend Codes; certain Pokémon would be applied to everybody's code, similarly to Friend Safari, and they would all appear on your end if these people do happen to be on (wouldn't exactly matter what they're playing).

As suggested in above posts, perhaps they might also be able to throw hidden abilities. For some Pokémon, they're very important, and more way we have of running into them with such things, the better.

Salzorrah August 2nd, 2014 12:04 AM

Maybe it could be done a la Mirage Island style, and appear at random? And maybe have either Hidden Ability Pokemon, or Sinnoh, Unova, Kalos Pokemon in? And maybe if you have XY data stored, the chances of Altering Cave appear are higher?

Pepperton August 2nd, 2014 8:18 AM

Higher shiny rate would be fun! I want them to do something with it and not just leave it like it was before - if they plan on that, I say it's better if they just remove it altogether. I barely knew it existed before ORAS was announced, haha.

Well it is quite hidden. But since it was an Emerald only cave I can see it not returning too. Plus it lost it's purpose with them not even having the events to change the kind of Pokemon that appear. Should it return perhaps they should make it so that the kind of Pokemon that appear aren't changed by a wi-fi event, but rather make it a daily thing. Perhaps with rare baby Pokemon, especially not available in the wild in XY. Such as Hapinny (Mondays), Mime Jr. (Tuesdays), Togepi (Wednesdays), Bonsly (Thursdays), Elekid (Fridays), Elekid (Saturdays), and Magby (Sundays).

RedWar August 2nd, 2014 9:54 AM

They could use it as a place to go to alter the formes of the various pokemon with different formed. Hence keeping the name but making it useful

Yato August 2nd, 2014 3:16 PM

If Altering Cave were to return, I'd sort of like to see its layout actually change in shape--when I first discovered it, I thought it would do and was disappointed that it didn't change. However, chances are it will probably stay the same and instead have alternating Pokemon like it was supposed to. Given how we can now get Wi-Fi events and DLC, updating the Altering Cave so that it has different Pokemon is a lot easier. It's also possible that connecting with various Secret Bases could change the Pokemon found, which would be pretty neat, too! I'd also like to see a higher shiny rate; it would make the cave worth going into more.

Yeah, too bad they didn't release the original events to change the cave up :(
I sure hope they do something like that. I still think they will just eliminate it though...

This has been my favorite idea so far. Perhaps a randomly-generated cave like in the Mystery Dungeon games, possibly also with a pool of 7 or so random Pokémon for wild encounters, and a random reward at the end. I would really like something like that.

I'm not sure what would trigger its changes, but I definitely think it should be something other than downloading an event, as those will some day be discontinued, and at least to me, they would seem too infrequent to let us make good use of a feature like this.

I earlier suggested that they could change the Pokemon every day. So perhaps they could do the same with the layout to fit the Pokemon. With each day having a certain layout.

They might make Altering Cave like those caves with one item inside. If that would be the case, it would most probably be a megastone.

Like cave of emptyness.

Pinkie-Dawn August 3rd, 2014 7:13 AM

I never noticed this cave existed in R/S before; I guess it shows how worthless Altering Cave is. Since we're getting Friend Safari back, I doubt the Altering Cave will serve a new purpose as our Hidden Grotto from B2/W2, maybe as a place to find a Mega Stone.

Wait, where was it confirmed we're getting Friend Safari back?
Also this cave was in only in Emerald (and in the Sevii island for the Kanto remakes).
I remember someone told me a rumor that if you stayed in Altering Cave without moving for 24 hours Mew would appear...can't believed it...

You said yourself that Friend Safari may be coming back:

The friend Safari is still seen on the map, in the same way it was in Gen III. Besides, even though it wasn't in Gen V or in XY it doesn't mean it won't return. Secret Bases were last seen in Platinum yet are back now for ORAS.

Since you reminded me that the Altering Cave was in FR/LG, I stand corrected that it was pretty much worthless, as I don't remember stepping upon it during my playthrough.

How embarrassing...you know that's actually a typo I made. I meant to say Safari Zone :3c

It's quite isolated from the rest of the islands, I found it by accident...was so disappointed by what was inside...Zubat...

Sceptile14 August 3rd, 2014 10:50 AM

Wait what? I played Emerald countless times and never even realised that it existed 0_0

Altius August 3rd, 2014 10:44 PM

If this cave were to return, I really want to see it be an "actual" cave with passageways and puzzles, leading to (possibly?) a legendary pokemon. Or it could be a location for a mega stone?

Otherwise, this cave serves no purpose and I hope to see it gone.

Do you mean it would have only one type of Pokémon each day, and have a certain static layout for each type of Pokémon?

That made me think of changing the cave's skin, along with grouping the Pokémon types. Like, instead of a completely random pool of Pokémon, it chooses only Pokémon that have a certain type, and changes the cave's appearance to fit them. It would still randomly generate passageways and puzzles, they just would look different depending on the types of Pokémon found in the cave.

For example, say one day only Fire Pokémon appear, and the cave's walls and floor look like a volcanic area, then another day it chooses to have Water Pokémon appear, and changes the appearance to something like an underwater cave. Maybe this could also affect the kind of obstacles you find while exploring.

A Mega Stone would also be a good addition, and they could make it a guaranteed one-time reward for getting to the end for the first time.

Yeah, like one day only Chingling could appear, and the cave could have levitating stones, and have rope like those in shinto shrines. For Togepi's it could have egg shaped rocks, and pink dust (fairy dust) flying around.
