My mother was that person at the Golden Corral years ago. I'll tell you right now had she been working prior to Lynn getting the boot, she'd be GM. Being a hard worker, not taking or making drama, and staying on good terms with folks is really important I guess

Magic Christmas Lights September 21st, 2014 4:33 AM

All of this makes me miss having a job. I used to work as a research assistant and also as a delivery driver at Jimmy John's. I was terrible at the delivery driving though. Just the worst. I never would've been GM.

No way, can't believe it... I work a coffee shop and it's a constant rotation between cash, drip machines, espresso bar and dishwasher. Over and over and over again. No sitting, either. My mind is never on the task at hand, I'm always thinking about games, girls, music - anything but keeping the store running. I'm not the best customer service worker either, I act completely uncaring and make sarcastic and ironic remarks as I make their drink/cash them out/clear their dishes. Flies well with some people, others are totally not ready for it. Human interaction is the only bit of fun I have at that job. The awful boredom and sore knees i get from standing all day have convinced me to bite the bullet and start working in the field I studied. I'm still nervous about freelancing but gotta start somewhere to build up a rep.

Uh, not to be rude or anything, but doesn't the phrase "biting the bullet" usually refer to suicide?

I'm incredibly offended you asked that, but I'll bite the bullet and fill you in. To "bite the bullet" is an expression meaning you'll go through with something, usually reluctantly, that you don't want to do.

Do a quick google search. I think you were thinking of something more along the lines of "pull the trigger."

Well, I've known people before who did that and that was the phrase often used. You know, "if you were to bite the bullet I don't think I could refrain from joining you."

Maybe you would rather "push the envelope"?

No I think it is you, my friend, trying to push the envelope containing the definition of this expression.

Hmm, perhaps the expression has different, or several meanings in different parts of the world. I never once thought of biting the bullet as killing oneself. Biting the dust can mean somebody died, or failed. But idk nothing else comes close. Biting the bullet will never be an expression for suicide in my books tho.

You're 100% correct, it's not a difference of region; biting the bullet only means to endure something painful, it has nothing to do with suicide.

Well, sometimes people can't endure pain, and maybe when I was told of one person biting the bullet it was sarcasm that he couldn't endure the stress and aggravation.

What should I say instead?

I, uh...what? I was just confirming that he was right about what the phrase meant. I didn't even see what you said.

Unless you're asking what you should say to replace 'bite the bullet' for suicide, in which case I would recommend 'commit suicide'.

To each sentence in this bar the last, I ask, "Why?"

1. "Why" does not make sense in the context of this sentence.
2. Because he was unsure about it, and if he was convinced that the incorrect definition of it was correct in some cases, he might start using it incorrectly as well.
3. Because I responded to him, not you.

Unless the person receiving said knowledge is not receptive to it, by default if I know something and another person is unsure I'll tell them, because knowledge is nice to have. :)

I use bite the bullet the same way marz does, but I have seen it used by some people to relate to suicide, and I think it's really insensitive of them.

Amongst the few deaths I've dealt with the phrase was never really said in malice. Sarcasm is really weird without cynicism, I have to say. When you say the opposite of what you mean without any sort of negativity towards the subject...

I guess others' experiences may differ, though.

Legendary Silke September 22nd, 2014 12:13 AM

I think I'll chalk it up to intent not always being clear when you're reduced to sending out text on the Internet. However, even then, I'd rather refrain from using certain terms without appropriate context.

Poki September 22nd, 2014 6:04 AM

Hm, I didn't know that "to bite the bullet" could also be related to suicide.

This whole conversation is based on the idea that the expression has nothing to do with suicide...

My guess is somebody wrongfully used that expression in conversation with Alex and he simply interpreted it the only way he could given the context.

I know that. I wasn't being serious.

As for Alex, I'd suggest doing some research before using unfamiliar phrases/expressions.

Oryx September 22nd, 2014 6:49 AM

Eh, it's an easy enough thing to do - if you think you know how it's used, it's seen as a familiar phrase and looking it up seems unnecessary. Like for a long time I thought "ambivalent" meant apathetic. I can't remember what finally made me realize that it was wrong, whether it was someone flat-out telling me or just reading/hearing it in a way that made no sense with that definition, but I didn't look it up until then because I was confident that it was right definition for it. I just turned out to be wrong about it, haha.

Mark Kamill September 22nd, 2014 6:58 AM

Wait, in other way can "Bite the Bullet" be used other then for a professional hit or Suicide?

Oryx September 22nd, 2014 7:04 AM

It means kind of like taking one for the team, except 'team' in a very general sense - going through something unpleasant and just dealing with it. I always thought it came from biting a bullet in war when something painful like an amputation had to be done but I googled it and it seems like that's a common misconception.

Did it ever enter your head that an analysis of the topic's etymology may not be the best idea with the notion of suicide looming in the back?

You're the only one talking about suicide. The phrase has nothing to do with suicide. Sometimes committing suicide is biting the bullet, sometimes it's not. Just like sometimes talking to a person is biting the bullet and sometimes it's not, and any other countless actions that may or may not apply depending on the circumstances.

Shining Raichu September 22nd, 2014 7:53 AM

Jesus Christ enough. Biting the bullet doesn't mean what you think it means, Alex. Stop trying to make it work.

Alexander Nicholi September 22nd, 2014 8:01 AM

So how does everybody feel about post-its? Personally I think they're handy little yellow mofos, but this could be the controversial topic to end all controversy.

Oryx September 22nd, 2014 8:23 AM

My desk at work came with a brand-new set of Post-Its. I used it to stick my area code onto my desk phone and doodle. I should write myself inspirational quotes and stick them to my monitor.

It's one of the things I miss from the 90s. Put them all around the edges of your manilla CRT, log onto Windows 95, it was simple. You didn't waste a bunch of electricity showing pretty pictures on the monitor and you did your job. Nowadays though they make creative fuel.

The brand name ones burn really nicely and the ink dyes the flames, and when you burn the knock offs the cheaper adhesives makes this bizarre mixture of wax and ash.

Post-its are useful. I use them frequently for notes and as temporary labels and bookmarks

Bellsprout September 22nd, 2014 3:31 PM

They're one of those things that I'm sure are really handy to some, but has never come in handy to me. In the past I have stuck them to my upper lip/chin and pretended I had a paper mustache/goatee out of complete boredom.

Nick September 22nd, 2014 5:06 PM

Wow. You guys need to chill out and take it easy on Alex. People use some phrases differently in different parts of the world. Even in different areas within a general area. People probably use the expression that way where he lives.

Oops I'm a page behind but I think my point stands.

Alfieri September 22nd, 2014 5:30 PM

I hardly use post-its. The last time I used them was in my Junior year in high school to bookmark my books.

TheFattestSnorlax September 22nd, 2014 5:49 PM

I think I might use Post-it notes sometime when I'm grown up. Probably at a job, but who knows when.

Say whatever you want, just make sure you know the meanings behind the words and phrases you're using. One time, I told my friends I was "livid" thinking it meant content or cheerful. NOPE lol.

Post-its are cool I think they were invented on accident, as in the guy originally wanted to create something completely different but post-its were really well received. Personally, I never use them.

thanks Nick. A power nap did it help my blood to settle a little bit better but it's nice to know that there is someone out for me as well. I do appreciate it.

in regards to that new article, I'm actually incredibly happy that /b/ finally did something useful for the first time in a while. When you get really sick of Mac users yammering about their technology, its really nice and relieving to read this and watch their idiocy get exposed. I hope it didn't break their phones though, honestly speaking. There is a point to where it does become overkill in any situation.

VeranithasVI September 23rd, 2014 4:21 AM

I'd love to use Post-It's but mine generally just depict bizarre and/or inappropriate drawings and hang off my Mac for a few days before I throw them out. :(

Magic Christmas Lights September 23rd, 2014 5:37 AM

I use post-it notes from a sorority that I'm not in anymore. It gives me great joy to use their stuff when I'm not "supposed" to. When I quit that sorority, they asked for my sorority pin back. That thing was about $200, made of real gold and pearls. Needless to say I told them to get lost.

Sonata September 23rd, 2014 6:05 AM

Post it notes are great for making flip books. But I've never really found any other use for them.

Oryx September 23rd, 2014 6:09 AM

I like them for their function as tiny, simplistic notepads - no extra stuff like cardboard or binding. Like when I was looking for a new desk I was walking around my workplace and writing down ones I wanted to look into, and I didn't want to walk behind a bunch of people writing things on a giant notepad because that's pretty creepy.

When I originally joined, there were a lot of cool people I got along with. Two years later, everyone I was tight with had graduated and I found the newer members to be very cliqueish and unfriendly to me. It was like I was in a totally different sorority all of a sudden. So I decided to quit. I also was having problems affording the dues.

Wow, you were legitimately in a sorority. I hate people too much to be in one. Too picky about my friends as well.

My imagination of sorority is always what those College freshman movies depict. Or movies like Neighbors with Seth Rogen and Zak Effron.

Mark Kamill September 23rd, 2014 7:41 AM

College here is like a 6 year extension of high school. Live with your parents, get drunk on weekends with the friends, and maybe have a 9-5 job on the weekdays as well.

VeranithasVI September 23rd, 2014 7:49 AM

College/University over here is nothing really too special. Then again I wouldn't know, I made it through six months and dropped out. Currently looking at going back and doing a course of some sort but I have no idea what I'd do, and I'm pretty busy with my workload right now e.g. night shifts + Pokemon during the day. D:

Oryx September 23rd, 2014 7:55 AM

I think that it's hard to judge college in an entire country based on a few experiences, because colleges are so different. The local college that my sister went to, most of the kids were within an hour of the school and thus lived at home, most of the kids had no plans of leaving this area, and most of the kids were partiers. Meanwhile at my school, the kids came from all over the world and lived in dorms and off-campus alone, and very few planned on going back to their hometown after graduation.

Sororities and fraternities can be kind of awesome sometimes and also just really, really awful. One of my friends who was in another sorority was raped by someone in their partner fraternity, and not only did that sorority allow that guy at their functions (they knew), they actually pressured my friend not to press charges because "it could hurt our relationship with the fraternity."

IDK about the living with parents part. I didn't know anyone at my university that actually lived with their parents - most of us were from out of the area or if we were from the area we preferred to live on our own.

Finding posts from when you're young is so cringeworthy. Less so as you get older - 19 to 16 is really bad, 16 to 13 is worse, but 22 to 19 isn't that bad.

Yeah, I dont know what its like these days but I joined back when I feel like it was in its heyday, or riding the plateau of the heydays. Scizz was an active and contributing member coming out with plenty of intuitive and useful tools for hacking the GBA generation. The whole community had gotten plenty of experience hacking GBC ROMs. I was able to beta test on what I consider to be one of the PC community's greatest achievements, even if it was never fully completed, Pokemon ShinyGold. I am one of many that registered to PC solely to download SG. A ton of fun for someone who was looking to experience the great storyline, region and Pokedex of G/S/C with upgraded graphics. Zel got to throw in his own creativity into the story too, which I'm sure he enjoyed.

But enough of me inflating zel's ego. I just really thought it was a fantastic game, and had high regard for PC's hacker community. I also remember seeing far too many hacks die out, and many more recycle old ideas. And the worst: Fakemon. God those things were the awful. I would almost always write off playing your beta if your entire game was based on Fakemon. I had no interest in learning a new Pokedex unless Gamefreak was its creator.

Aisu September 25th, 2014 5:21 AM

This website, I didn't post anything really incriminating (I think.) But other Forums, I love looking at posts I made as a prepubescent sixth grader. They always make me cry in disappointment of myself.

Sheep September 26th, 2014 6:43 AM

LOL I don't even want to look back on my old posts from other forums, feels like they'll always be there to haunt me unless I were to make a new account for a clean slate. My ROM hacking posts from 2006-2008 probably weren't very fun either.

Hikamaru September 26th, 2014 6:58 AM

I'm totally non-existent in the ROM Hacking boards. I only like looked at one thread and then I all but knew the section wasn't right for me. Although looking back at my old posts here at PC from 2011-2012 make me feel embarrassed because I was such a huge noob at the time.

And when name changes came back, I decided to get rid of my old name (because of its bad past) and that was how I adopted my current, much better name and lost the noob persona in the process.

Oryx September 26th, 2014 6:58 AM

Quizilla is being wiped away so that's one embarrassing past memory deleted, thank god.

Mark Kamill September 26th, 2014 7:01 AM

I have like 7 years history on BMGF and SPFF(each). I haven't touched my post history out of sheer fear of what I used to post. And still do.

Meganium September 26th, 2014 7:12 AM

I remember posting a crapload of quizilla results on my myspace page. High school. Good goooooooooood times, man. xD

Poki September 26th, 2014 7:23 AM

I'm too embarrassed to even look up what I may have written years ago. Well, I'm mostly afraid of dying from laughter. That says a lot.

Oryx September 26th, 2014 7:30 AM

I wrote a story on Quizilla but that was before they had the story section so it was really a quiz with a few options and the questions were just super super long and then when they added a story category they just cut off the questions to stop people from doing that. So I can't read my writing really because three sentences in it would cut off. :(

VeranithasVI September 26th, 2014 9:36 AM

Lot's of people have some pretty old, cringe-worthy stuff on the net then? :P

I can't get my sleeping patterns right and it's starting to REEEEALLY annoy me. I work nights so I'm accustomed to sleeping during the day, but I got to sleep at 4/5am yesterday morning and woke up at 5:30pm T_T Luckily I had the night off work but that brings me back too my point; it's 3:36am WHY CAN'T I SLEEEEEP.

Take some of those nyquil or allergy pill stuff to make you drowsy!

I would, but I've been drinking (with big gaps in between drinks, mind) for about seven hours now. It's 5:32 and I opened another drink five minutes ago or so, just before reading your post, and I'm scared of what a nyquil/allergy pill might do! :P

On the subject of post history again, I went on NewGrounds just so I could look at my old post history on there (member since '06). Oh. My. God. It was absolutely horrendous.

Aisu September 26th, 2014 1:47 PM

So we all have a tie to bond us together besides being Pokemon nerds: we all made ridiculous posts in the past.

Sonata September 26th, 2014 4:44 PM

Surefire ways to reforge a good sleep schedule:

1. Stay up all night and then go to sleep whenever it is you're wanting your new schedule to be having you go to sleep, and then set alarms in 5 minute intervals starting half an hour before the time you want to wake up.

2. **** the above suggestion, grab a bottle of 151 and take a shot every minute on the minute up until the time you want to pass the **** out and hope you set an alarm for in the morning because if you didn't then get ready to do it all over again the next day when you wake up at 5 pm.

It's always a humbling experience to revisit old posts. I can't help but reach for my face in shame when I see them.

Meganium September 26th, 2014 8:52 PM

I hardly even remember my first posts on PC. That's okay, I don't even want to see them anyways!

Option number two, please!

Just got back from a job interview, and buying more alcohol, and my plan is just to chill out on PC and drink till I sleep. Think it might be a good one.

Judge Mandolore Shepard September 27th, 2014 5:39 AM

For me, my oldest forum posts are from the Forummotion version of Super Skarmory Forums. Course I could have posts older than that, but I don't exactly remember.

Shining Raichu September 27th, 2014 7:49 AM

I posted wanting a pokemon yellow remake. That was my first post haha

obZen September 27th, 2014 8:08 AM

This was back when I was SlimShady
I posted like a damn 14 year old ugh (well, I was)

Your sig pic makes me really uncomfortable, but I can't look away.

Anybody a football fan? Anybody a Manchester United fan? Anybody else watch the game we just played against West Ham and have a mild heart attack the entire second half? I did. Sleep now, please.

Tsutarja September 27th, 2014 11:38 AM

My first non-welcome post here was me asking how to obtain the bike in HG. Yeah, that was horrible.

Bellsprout September 27th, 2014 3:48 PM

Hello everyone I know this conversation is so far gone, but I just want to thank everyone who actually prayed while I was using tinder. If there is a higher power than it has shown upon me for an old tinder flame has been rekindled and I will see the results of this tomorrow so pray just a bit longer!!!

Shining Raichu September 28th, 2014 6:10 AM

I pray to the gods of love, sex and fire for the success of your date.

obZen September 28th, 2014 11:19 AM

I really don't feel like studying, or doing anything
Damn this sinus infection!
I get these like every year because of my sinus polyp buildup

Alfieri September 28th, 2014 11:36 AM

Dude I feel you, I despise reading textbook chapters so much. I wish there was a shortcut around it. >.>

I'm more of a technical person, I love math and would rather be solving equations than read 20 pages about Christianity for medieval history. Ughhh.

Because I'm in Liberal Arts in a community college. Planning to transfer to Computer Science after getting my associates. My current community college doesn't offer a major in computer science and I've already transferred schools so I'm stuck here until graduation.

I have never heard of a community college not offering computer science! That's unacceptable!

Alfieri September 28th, 2014 12:03 PM

They have "computer engineering technology" which will give me a certificate to work as opposed to an associates degree. They do have a math department though, maybe I'll switch there in my 2nd semester.
