Your starter?
Just a simple question--which starter did you wind up selecting in your play-through of Pokémon X and Y, and why? Have they made a valuable member of your team?

As you can tell, I swore loyalty to the Water starter again. Froakie's line was the one I definitely fell in love with the most (despite initially being my least fave of the three, but its evos changed that) because the ninja theme is something that seems to go well with frogs, but also because it's fast and hits hard which tends to be my kind of battle style. Given Water-types are my fave type, it's no surprise. |
I picked Froakie for Y. I liked Froakie the most from the start, and I created my nickname two months before X and Y, which was Blubs. Blubs, the Lv. 5 Froakie, became Blubs, the Lv. 100 Greninja after defeating the Hall of Fame about 8 times.
Fennekin, nicknamed Fenny, and stayed as a cute little Fennekin until I beaten the PKMN League. xD
...I still don't like how Braixen and Delphox looks. :/ |
http://www.pkparaiso.com/imagenes/xy/sprites/animados/fennekin.gif http://img3.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20140319092956/pokemon/images/0/0d/Braixen_XY.gifhttp://files.pokefans.net/sprites/xy/animationen/655.gif
Team Fennekin all the way! I don't care that it's middle evolution looked a little strange! It gains the Psychic Type when it fully evolves, and in my book, that adds about 50 extra Cool points. My Delphox in X, Elphaba, was my MVP on my first League team, even though I had to teach her Grass Knot to take care of Callem's annoying Greninja. I still love Delphox and I really want to get around to IV breeding one someday. And do I even need to mention it's shiny sprite? http://fc06.deviantart.net/fs70/f/2013/325/6/0/shiny_delphox_global_link_art_by_trainerparshen-d6v3ws3.png I don't care what anyone says, I think it looks cool. Case closed... :) |
I have used all three but my favorite is Chespin because I love grass types and he evolves into a power monster as Chesnaught.
I Started and played through the game without any knowledge of what new Pokemon were in it... I just chose froakie.
I usually pick the grass starters, but this time around I chose Froakie. I kind of regret it. I like Fennekin more. Which is also very weird for me.
I started with Fennekin because I always use the fire starter, but Delphox disappointed me. Greninja was so much cooler so I restarted the game and picked Froakie instead. Now my Greninja is a beast.
I initially liked Fennekin best as I normally go with the fire types but didn't like the look of either of its evolutions. So I broke a long standing tradition of never choosing the grass type and picked Chespin. I don't think it ever saw the inside of a box until postgame when I started breeding projects and started levelling loads of others for the dex entries lol.
I chose Froakie, but Torrent Greninja's kind of useless...
I picked Fennekin its my favorite starter full stop. Kalo's really has a great bunch of starters as a whole and i have used all three of them in my game at some point.
Kalos and Kanto must be the only starter setS I like all three in (which is kind of cool you get a free Kanto starter as well in X and Y) |
I've used both Froakie and Fennekin, starting with Froakie when I first got X. Unfortunately, it had a neutral nature, but I liked Greninja's stats, typing and learnset. I got a lot luckier next time around, by getting a Modest Fennekin. I'm currently considering whether to re-EV train my Delphox or not, so I could use it for competitive battling. :3
Froakie, but now scouring wondertrade, I wish I chose chespin
Feels like we've had this topic several times already but sure, why not reply to it again.
Anyway, my main playthrough of X had me choosing Chespin. It's my favorite of the three starters by design, and it did do me pretty good even if it wasn't too good against any of the Gyms I came up against. But one of my challenges, a very difficult Wedlocke, had me picking Froakie based on my ID No, but it became a Greninja and it lived all the way to the end, as a Frogadier there were a couple times where it came super close to dying but it didn't. It was quite good for the team. To say the least I really like all three starters in this game, they're probably my favorite batch of starters yet. |
10 out of the 11 copies (new copies of the game, I never restarted) of XY I started playing, Fennekin has been my choice (the other time I choose Chespin).
It's my 2nd most favorite starter of all time (Oshy o the 5th gen takes first), love the typing and especially love it's fox design - every time I used it, it's always been an excellent addition to my teams (it was also the first shiny starter I ever used) |
I went with Fennekin but traded for the other ones. Don't particularly like Chesnuaght much, double-weakness and all.
I'm used to choosing the Water-type Pokemon since the very first generation. Sadly this time I couldn't resist the idea of a Psychic/Fire Pokemon LOL!
I chose Fennekin, and named him McCloud, however when I got Charmander he became my main fire pokemon and eventually I dropped McCloud from my main team. I should have thought it through, though since I could have just picked Chespin and I would have had reliable fire and grass types on my main team.
XY: Froakie, BW: Snivy, DP: Turtwig, RS: Treecko, GS: Cyndaquil, RB: Charmander
I have played the games over enough times to experience every starter of every generation, but these are my inital choices/favorites! Some are really close, especially RB, but these are my faves. |
I picked Chespin, because... I honestly don't know. Before I got my hands on the game, I thought on picking Froakie as well, but once I got it I picked Chespin for some reason. No regrets though! He's strong and proves himself to be a viable member of my team.
I chose froakie cuz since gen II i deciced to choose only water starters. Greninja is a fantastic pokemon, and i think it really adds the role playing part to the rpg pokemon is, as it's a ninja and its desing and moveset goes with it.
My first playthrough I chose Fennekin, because...well, it's cute, and fire-type starters are usually a lot of fun. The fire/psychic typing was pretty interesting to me too. I sat around soft-resetting for a female for like a half an hour, but it ended up being worth it, since I had fun playing through with it.
In my latest run, I started with Chespin. Even though it was the starter I liked the least at first (the middle/final evo aren't/weren't my cup of tea) I've enjoyed using it so far. |
I went with the fox. When it evolves to Delphox it gains a psychic type. This cuts two slots in my party to one.
When it came to Chespin, Fennekin, and Froakie, I continued my tradition of going with the Water type starter. I give my starter the nickname of Enterprise (after the American aircraft carrier from World War II). It is my highest leveled member of my team. Plus I really like Froakie's final evolution, Greninja.
The moment it was reveled I knew I was taking Froakie
Chespin! I loved him so much and couldn't wait to have my baby on my team. He became a lot less cute when evolved but was fine to use while he lasted. I ended up swapping him for another Pokemon around the 5th/6th badge. :(
i chose Fennekin but traded it right after the first badge for a lvl 1 Cyndaquil and now its one of my pokemon at lvl 80!
i chose Froakie as my starter. it has the best design out of the three and it has the dark type when it gets to greninja.
I chose Fennekin for my Y version and Froakie for my X version.
I played the X version first, and I have to say that I'm glad I picked Froakie for this. I liked the way that Greninja looked the best, and I feel as though it's the most well rounded Pokemon out of the 3. Fennekin and its evolutions definitely aren't bad. I was excited about the fact that the fire type wasn't going to be part fighting again, as that's my personal least favorite type to use. However, I just don't know if I really enjoyed battling with it. I didn't like Chespin's design at all, and I feel like his evolutions only got worse for me lol. It's probably my least favorite starter, in my personal opinion based primarily on looks and my type preferences. |
In my first playthrough I chose Chespin, but in my new game I chose Froakie because Greninja looked amazing in the trailer. I love Greninja now, he's much better than Chestnaught IMO.
Froakie. Don't know why but I always end up picking the water starter. Expect for Feraligatr. I like Typhlosion a lot better.

Picked Froakie because I liked its typing, found its evolutions cool, and knew my sister would go with the fire starter as she always does. I don't really have any "starter type loyalty", although for the aforementioned reason I don't think I have ever picked the fire starter. There's been a couple I really liked, but I think my favorite starter ever was Snivy.
I was originally going to choose Fennekin, but I changed my mind to Chespin. ^_^ Interestingly I've always changed my mind when it comes to starters to choose. I'll probably pick Fennekin in Z version. (I also chose Bulbasaur.)
Originally Chespin, but I took Fennekin instead. I'm not much of a Fire-type gal, but I wanted it because BRAIXEN. :3
When I restart, I'm using Froakie. :3 |
I chose Froakie! But once I evolved it I kind of left in the PC to rot...
I ended up going with Chespin at the start of the game, since I went in knowing that I wanted to train a Litleo/Pyroar, and was planning to get Squirtle from Professor Sycamore later on. I did end up getting a Froakie through Wonder Trade later on that became a part of my main 6, though unfortunately for him it was as an HM Slave.
I picked Froakie for Y and Froakie for X.
I chose the Water-type starter, as usual. I loved how Fennekin looked though. I nearly went for him.
Froakie, and his evolutions, are the best, however. |
I chose Fennekin and liked it allright, but it did not become a permanent member of my team. The reason for that is the event Torchic that was avaiable at the beginning. I kind of ended up using that instead of the regular starters and am quite happy with that. It's fully evolved and Level 100 now. I think it's also the only event Pokemon I've ever used regularly.
My first choice was Froakie which was the perfect choice for me. I've used the other two before but they never manage to keep a spot on my team for long.
Fennekin was my starter choice. Froakie was a close second. I mean, I like Froakie's evolutionary chain, but keeping Fennekin cute and adorable with an Everstone was a better option for me.
I chose Fennekin, because it's cute-looking, and I like it even more when it grows into Delphox the wizard, and it helps me win the battles a lot.
Chespin. First Grass starter I've chosen since Venusaur.
I picked chespin. I've always liked the grass starters. But it did disappoint me.. All the kilos starters actually. I quickly replaced it with a shiny Azurill from my brother's version of X.
I got Fennekin. I decided before they came out, that I wanted Fennekin. He stayed on my team for the entire game, and now he's a Level 98 Braixen.
...Yeah. I didn't want to evolve him completely because I named him Lavi, like a character in an anime, and Delphox looks like a girl. :P On X I got Chespin and named him Allen, after another character from the same anime, and he's fully evolved and a part of my team forever. I never get rid of my starter, I get attached to them. ^_^; |
I chose Chespin. I've been in the grass camp pretty firmly since the introduction of the original 3. I used Quilladin pretty heavily up until the...fourth gym, I think? But then he evolved into Chesnaught and I was no longer ok with it...
#shallow |
I chose Fennekin. Fire-type starters are my thing, for sure. 0w0
I chose fennekin! i'm super biased with fire types, and well.. I really loved how it earned the psychic typing after fully evolving. c: I also trained the other two starters as well(thanks to wonder trade) and I really liked froakie. (it's hidden ability is perfect)
I went with Chespin, because of his monstrous defense and good attack Chesnaught! I have been killing lately!
As for Kanto... Modest Squirtle, although u guys already probably new that!! He's my #1! I litteraly took down 3 Charizards, and 1 of them mega Charizard X! <------ |
I went for Fennekin during my in-game run in X.
Now that I know more about the other starters and their evolutions, I really wish that I never picked Fennekin in the first place. Both Chespin and Froakie seem like they're much better Starters than that fire breathing fox. |
I went with Froakie, and it served me well. I preferred by Kanto starter (Squirtle), mainly because I like the Kanto starters better and Blastoise is my favorite Pokemon, but my Greninja saw plenty of use. Without Protean, it's not too useful competitively, but at least it has perfect speed and is EV trained. I've been happy with my starter choice, though honestly, X was easy enough that it really made no difference which starter I went with anyway.
Froakie master race. Only chose it because Greninja is the only 3rd evolution that actually looks decent. The other two were easily the most disappointing final evolutions in the series so far. Greninja looks good though so yeah that's the only thing that influenced my decision.
I went with Froakie on my Y version, which was the version I got on release day. Froakie was always my favorite of the three, and Greninja is a powerhouse.
In X, I went with Fennekin. Delphox is pretty cool. And if I ever play through Kalos again, I will go with Chespin. |
Always chose water types so I stuck with Froakie. Which actually ended up working out quite nicely because when I acquired Torchic, I had the best of both worlds in the beginning.
I chose Fennekin, I almost always choose the fire starter. I love foxes and the added psychic secondary typing is a huge bonus. Braixen is one of my favorite XY designs, it has such a mischievous little witch look that I just love.
Fennekin. I generally dispose of starters as I prefer not to have an exceptional monster on my team like some previleged special snowflake. This one, however, I actually particularly liked as something to take to the endgame. Even so, I don't think I kept it quite as far as the Elite Four. Just a shame about the strange ear fur of its evolutionary forms; still, cut that short and you'll have a waifu to match Gardevoir!
When the starters were originally released, I was thinking Fennekin for sure cause OMG another fire fox after Vulpix/Ninetales just seemed too good to be true lol, and then after the later evolutions were introduced I immediately switched allegiance to Froakie's line. The design, ninja aspect and the antics of Ash's Froakie in the anime have all assured me that I made the right decision lol :)
Well during my initial run I picked Fennekin. I enjoyed all it's evolutions though in the end it didn't turn out as strong as I would of liked it to be, especially coming from a starter. Regardless I would still use it again. The second time around I chose Froakie and in the end I was very disappointed by it. I don't remember exactly, but I don't think I enjoyed its move pool and I feel like it ended up fainting on me more times than I'd like. I used Chespin last, but for myself it seemed to be the most reliable.
One thing I'm hoping to see them do is give these Pokémon some mega-evolution forms in future. If I were to make an estimate, this might actually happen as soon as they announce their third installment or sequels; since these would still be the starters in those games, most likely, I believe it would be a good way to go about.
For Chesnaught, I could imagine this Pokémon to be growing a little more bulk in appearance. To cover it all in terms of statistics, they could give it some boost in Defense and Special Defense, and perhaps give Chesnaught access to some defense-raising moves. Greninja and Delphox—I'm experience expecting to see them focused more towards physical- and special-based attacks, respectively. |
I started with Chespin simply because its design is my favourite of all three Kalos starter Pokémon.
I wasn't happy with its evolved form Quilladin but Chesnaught I loved, even with its dual weakness! After 120+ hours of game play I restarted and decided to pick Fennekin, Delphox's Fire/Psychic typing wasn't enough to make me fall in love with it unfortunately. A couple of days ago I restarted my game for a third time, due to the anime Froakie had grown on me so I chose him. I'm looking forward to trying out Greninja (Frogadier) during the story too. Overall if I only got one chance I would have done exactly the same and went with Chespin! #teamchespin |
I chose Chespin but then replaced him with mega Venusaur in my team
Fennekin! :D I always go for fire types and he was just so cute. <3
Ditched him this time though, since I wanted a Pansear. >:B |
I picked Froakie, since I love Water types and usually choose the Water type starter. Greninja has made an extremely valuable member of my team, plus I just love him in Amie! <3
Fennikin. The Pokemon is soo adorable. It's evolutions are so elegant and beautiful. Kind of reminded me of Gardevior. I was going to go with Froakie..but everyone was choosing him.
I like mages and I liked Delphox the best out of the three so I got a Fennekin, who I named Rydia. Didn't matter much as I got a Protean Froakie from Wonder Trade soon after whom I dubbed Edge. I didn't get a Chespin until after I beat the game, which sucked cause I wanted to beat the game with one named Cecil... Eh.
I've always chose the fire starter since DP but when i saw froakie I knew i'd pick him over fenekkin (: #froakiealltheway |
Froakie and Fenneken were my starters for X & Y
I chose Froakie because I thought its final stage would pretty awesome but I was a bit disappointed in the result. My Greninja actually became a HM slave as Charizard and my other party members simply took control of the battling.
I've always gone with water type throughout all generations and i've never regretted it once
I chose Fennekin initially. It's still my favorite, which surprised me because usually I'm pretty loyal to water starters.
However, I really hate frogs...I worked at a pet store in high school and a tree frog jumped out of it's cage while I was cleaning it and onto my face. NOPE. So, sorry Froakie. |
I chose Fennekin as I had intended to from the reveal. Really glad I chose Fennekin tbh, I loved the evolutionary line.
Given my previous runs in my Pokemon games I was determined to make this run off my usual tracks, and was originally planning to throw away my starter Pokemon. Unfortunately as always I became attached to my Pokemon and ended up beating the game with an un-evolved Fennekin.
Froakie just fell in love with the design
Fennekin. Look at that thing. Look at it.
Also it's got STAB Psychic (move) which is nice. I called it Mozilla because that's hilarious. |
Thinking either water or grass start, plus charmander.
Picked Froakie because he was too darn cute. Then he evolved...
I usually always pick Fire starters since I love fire types but not this time around. Froakie has proved his worth though on my team and I'm glad I picked him. I love the little guy <3 |
I personally lied them all i chose Greninja/froakie used it on my first playthroughs and i liked it but if i played again i wouldnt choose it i rather have delphox a psychic and fire is a much more unique combonation!
Froakie all the way! The only starter that looked reasonable!
I has choose Fennekin. ^^
It was the first generation i choose an fire pokemon. In another versions i have every choose the water pokemon. |
I chose Froakie as my starter in Y. You can't say no to having a ninja frog on your team. Well, I can't anyway. It's pretty damn good, as far as starters go.
I took Froakie because it's design looked very good. Greninja now has been a very worthy pokemon on the team.
I chose frokie, just to get a greninja in the side, that Aldo with ability of protean and I was lucky I got one
usually I choose the fire or water starter but this time I prefer chespin, cuz I fall in love chesnaught
I really liked Fennekin but I loved Froakie. When I saw his design, I knew instantly what he was going to evolve into.
I ended up starting over since I absolutely hated my in-game nickname and couldnt figure out how to change it.
So I'm sitting here soft-resetting in hopes of getting a shiny Froakie, and will do the same thing for a shiny Charmander. So far the RNG god hasn't been kind... I chose Fennekin because I thought it looked a little bit feisty! :)
She is now a fully evolved Delphox and has been my strongest pokemon in many battles. |
Fennekin. Love the design, and the fire/psychic is nice. Didn't know I could get Charmander that early in the game, so I got Bulbasaur instead.
I picked Chespin because I happen to fall under the grass-type minority.
I was reluctant, though, because Chesnaught has a ridiculous amount of weaknesses while not being Breloom. Of course, the Chespin-line ended up growing on me, even if I did swap him out of the team a couple of times. I was so shocked to find out that we could have a Kanto starter at the beginning, and I ended up doing the taboo thing by picking Bulbasaur, despite already having another grass-type. Not only is Bulbasaur my favorite Pokémon, but it was an invaluable part of my in-game team. As a Venusaur, it pretty much dominated every single NPC, and I remember vividly when my Mega Venusaur barely pulled through against Diantha's Mega Gardevoir. |
I picked Froakie in X because of my tradition to go with the Water starter in the first play through of a set of games. In Y, I went with Fennekin.
Froakie, mainly because I thought his design was better than the others, just thought a ninja frog was really cool
Enjoying my Greninja. Someone gave me a Protean Froakie too I will raise at some point.
I gave up on SR'ing for a shiny starter lmao. Easier to just SR for the nature you want. |
Fennekiiiiiiiiiiiin. :D
It's too cute and adorable for me not to choose it. :3 |
I took Froakie. It looked the cutest one for me. When a new Pokemon generation comes out, I try to play it as blindly as possible. So when I choose a starter, I just pick whichever appeals to me the most :)
I picked Fennekin. I just started but she seems to be doing just fine.
Just re-started this after not playing in awhile. Went with Froakie
My tradition is the Fire-Type, but my first Pokémon in the Y version was Froakie. Greninja's great design got my attention right away.
Fennekin! I felt bad for breaking my Water starter tradition, but I wasn't big on Greninja.
My team now consists of Pokemon I've bred, so my Delphox doesn't see much action anymore, unfortunately. He was important when I played through the game, though... |
