1989 Released! [Blank Space m/v]

Taylor Swift's new pop album, 1989, was released today! Has anyone bought it yet? If so, what are your favorite songs so far? Has the album met your expectations or was it a disappointment?

Pendraflare October 28th, 2014 4:23 PM

I haven't picked it up yet, and may just listen to the tracks on iTunes before I give it a decision. Shake It Off i'm starting to not like again, but the other two singles I liked more.

Nick October 29th, 2014 4:08 AM

I love it. I'm head over heels addicted to it. I literally cannot choose a favorite track.

She's set to sell more than 1 million albums her first week, which is amazing. She moved 600,000 units her first day.

Kenchiin October 29th, 2014 4:19 AM

I prefer Red to be honest. However it isn't really bad, just not my cup of tea.

Red is an amazing record. By far, one of my absolute favorite albums ever. It's going to be hard for her to top Red, but I think 1989 is much more cohesive sonically than Red, which was all over the place sonically (which is something I liked about it).

I was worried about the album when Shake It Off was first released, but now that the album's out and I've bought it and heard the songs, I'm so relieved. The worst song on it is Shake It Off, ironically (also the opening track sucks too lol).

But literally every freaking song on this album except Shake It Off and Welcome To New York are awesome.

All these songs still sound like Taylor. She might be saying "I wanted to go into a new direction", but really the material isn't that much different from Red or heck even Speak Now, just the instrumentation is different, and her songwriting is less personal this time around. You could easily take a song from 1989, throw in some acoustic guitar, and then it could be mistaken for a Red song.

Interesting to note, Nathan Chapman, the country producer who produced Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now, and most of Red, still made it to 1989 despite Taylor saying this will be a pop album. He produced the song This Love, and while it's not my favorite Taylor Swift ballad, it was still really nice to hear a "Red-ish" song on the album with Nathan Chapman even producing! I'm not a huge fan of Max Martin or Shellback as producers, but I still enjoyed the rest of 1989 simply because of Taylor's songwriting, and I'm glad Nathan Chapman produced a song on the album, as I was expecting he wouldn't appear at all.

I haven't listened to this album enough times to really decide if it's my favorite album or not, but as of right now, Speak Now and Red are tied as my favorite Swift albums, with 1989 coming in a close 2nd. I like some songs from Fearless and Taylor Swift, but I can't really enjoy them as albums because her voice didn't really fully mature until Speak Now.

I really hated how Taylor transitioned from a country genre to a generic pop sound, and based on what I've heard from 1989 so far I can pretty well say it's the worst Taylor Swift album in my opinion.

Some songs on the album from what I've heard aren't that bad, but the major turn-offs are definitely Shake It Off (WORST TAYLOR SWIFT SONG EVER!) and Welcome To New York.

Her best albums in my opinion are probably Fearless and Red as far as I'm concerned.

Was she really ever 100% country in the first place? Maybe her first album, but I'd like to think after that she became country pop , especially with Red and now this album is straight up pop.

I haven't listened to her new album yet, but some of it isn't bad imo, just never really my style of music honestly.

I think the self-titled debut was a country album, Fearless and Speak Now were more country/pop hybrid and then became entirely pop with Red and 1989.

The album has a couple of decent pop songs but nothing more. I never want to hear fearless again and speak now is her best album by a long shot from what I heard.
It's such a shame how she is one of the few artists who sell albums these days though instead of singles.

Yeah I definitely agree that 'Red' was sonically 'all over the place'. Definitely very experimental, compared to '1989'. Not that experimental is a bad thing (I loved 'Red' too).

Generic pop sound...?

I absolutely adore '1989'. I was a bit worried when Taylor announced she was moving completely away from country. Although she hasn't been strictly country for a while, she still had country songs on her previous albums and a certain country twang to a lot of her amazing songs as well. But I'm so glad that even with this different sound, she's still Taylor. There's something about her songwriting that's still so personal. Her songwriting has definitely matured as well.

'Speak Now' is my favourite TS album just because I love the overall sound and feel of the album. I'm not sure whether '1989' would come in second, or would come in third (behind 'Red') but either way I'm definitely very impressed with it.

I love how it's more than just a CD as well. The polaroids are an adorable idea (and again, so Taylor-like, so personal) and the voice memos of her songwriting method are adorable. :,)

It's been a few days so I've been able to settle on a few favourite songs. 'Blank Space' and 'New Romantics' are my favourite tracks, and I also adore 'Out of the Woods', 'Style' and 'How You Get The Girl'.

Nick November 1st, 2014 10:56 AM

1989 is set to debut at 1.3 million records sold (domestically).

She'll be the only artist this year whose managed to move 1 million units (domestically), achieving platinum status. And she would have done it all in her opening week. She'll also be the only artist whose managed to sell this much since she did it herself with Red.

So incredibly happy for her. Addicted to 1989.

I literally have a new favorite track every day. Today it's All You Had to Do Was Stay, and yesterday (for the past few days, actually) it's been Clean. Before that, This Love. Etc.

I'm astonished at her success and the amount of internet heat she still gets for being an unimpressive artist when she very much so is more impressive and manages to sell more records than her competition. I'm in love with the album, also finding a new favorite every day. The past couple of days I've loved Style and Clean and All You Had to Do Was Stay and Blank Space... and Bad Blood, and really every song is sooo good.

She's by far the most consistently best selling artist of the 2000s.

professor plum November 8th, 2014 2:02 PM

She didn't break the record. Ah well.
I love this CD, though. I was never really into TSwift before this . . . but I like this CD. It's pretty solid.
I love Blank Space, Bad Blood, I Wish You Would, Out of the Woods, Welcome to New York, Wonderland, aaaand Style n_n
It's a fun cd.

antemortem November 8th, 2014 3:01 PM

She isn't coming to Texas until a year from now hahahahaha x___x

professor plum November 8th, 2014 3:08 PM

Her first stop is in Bossier City, which is literally forty minutes from me. ;D
I'm totally going.

Salzorrah November 9th, 2014 1:13 AM

Omg like I first listened to the whole album yesterday and wow. Awesome as ****.

Favorites so far are Welcome to New York, Blank Space, Style, Out of the Woods, All You Had To Do Was Stay, Shake It Off, Bad Blood, Wildest Dreams, and Clean.

I just can't stand I Wish You Would tho. The song is a little iffy for me haha

Now, I'm having a hard time since most of the songs on YouTube are all copyrighted and either blocked or muted. :(

What's worse, she pulled her services from Spotify too :(

Manitee November 21st, 2014 9:18 AM

I'm really in love with album at the moment. Listening to it right now actually! My favourites are 'I know places', 'Wonderland' and 'Blank Space'.

The only song I dislike is 'Bad Blood' I just find it irritating. :/

antemortem November 22nd, 2014 9:21 AM

What did everyone think of the Blank Space music video? It seemed typical Taylor, though I didn't expect anything less or more; regardless it was pretty awesome, imo, what with the change in mood as it went on to reflect the singer's eventual emotional struggle and downfall. (also the part where Taylor bit the guy's lip while he was on the ground was pretty hot)

I want a Wildest Dreams or Style music video next. I'll settle for nothing less :|

Bad Blood took a while for me to like it, but it was a grower for me for sure.

I still haven't stopped listening to this album. It's seriously all I can stand to listen to. Everything else I try to listen to, especially when it's the radio, just feels like noise.

Pendraflare December 25th, 2014 8:08 PM

So I just got the album for Christmas, and haven't really listened to any of the tracks yet except the two big singles (Shake It Off and Blank Space) and the two promo singles. But my sister and her husband want a chance to see it, probably since my parents, brother and I were having a heated debate on current music (those two hits involved) on the way to our folks' house, and i'll have to give the other songs a listen at another time. Kinda amazing that Blank Space is wrecking the Billboard Hot 100 right now, though.

(Wow, posting this hours before the thread is about to die, haha.)

Pepperton January 1st, 2015 6:56 PM

I don't know, her songs are catchy and generally pleasing to the ear, but that's about it. It's good radio music, but definitely not an album I would download, myself. I'll sing along to Shake it Off when it comes on in the car, though. n__n
